Several auto and taxi drivers’ unions held a protest outside the office of Delhi Transport Commissioner Niharika Rai on Rajpur Road on Thursday, demanding fare hikes amid rising CNG prices.

Five representatives were later allowed to meet officials amid police presence. “We told them that fares for taxis have not been increased for the past 15 years and urged them to revise the fare. We were told that a notification would be issued within 20 to 25 days,” said Anuj Kumar Rathore, vice president, Chaalak Shakti Union.

He added that if fare revision is not announced within 25 days, they will launch a wider agitation.

Haider Ali, the Delhi president of Aam Aadmi Auto Sangathan, said fares should be determined on the basis of transportation cost. “A transparent mechanism should be created for automatic revision of fares based on the rise of fuel prices. The expenditure of drivers has increased while the fares have remained the same despite multiple meetings,” he said.
