Emergency laparoscopic surgery performed on high-risk patient

Emergency laparoscopic surgery performed on high-risk patient

Posted on August 29, 2026 By admin

A 54-year-old man with severe small bowel obstruction, sepsis and impending bowel strangulation underwent emergency laparoscopic surgery at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, Velappanchavadi.

The patient had had a stroke before and consequently, was on antiplatelet medication, increasing the risk of bleeding during surgery. However, doctors said surgery could not be delayed as worsening obstruction and loss of blood supply to the bowel could lead to tissue damage and perforation.

Nabeel Nazeer, advanced laparoscopic and robotic GI surgeon, and his team performed the surgery laparoscopically on July 7. The procedure was completed without converting to open surgery.

The patient recovered without complications and was discharged on the second postoperative day, and doing well at follow-up.
