Life sentence for three in IUML councillor murder case in Kerala

The Additional District and Sessions Court-III, Manjeri, on Wednesday sentenced three persons to life imprisonment for the murder of former Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) councillor Abdul Jaleel.

The convicts, Shuhaib alias Kochu, Abdul Majeed P.T., and Shamseer, were also fined ₹1 lakh each. Additional District and Sessions Judge Sooraj S. pronounced the verdict.

The incident took place at Kuttippara near Manjeri on March 29, 2022. The prosecution said Shuhaib and Abdul Majeed had stopped Jaleel and his friends following a dispute over giving side to their motorcycle. They allegedly assaulted them, damaged the car windshield with a helmet and threatened them.

Later that night, while Jaleel was checking the damage to the vehicle, Shamseer allegedly informed the other accused about his location. Shuhaib then attacked Jaleel with a granite stone, hitting him on the head.

Jaleel, who suffered serious injuries, died while undergoing treatment on March 30, 2022.

The court ordered that if the fine is paid, ₹3 lakh should be given to Jaleel’s legal heirs and ₹25,000 to Abbas, a witness in the case.

Then Manjeri Inspector C. Alavi investigated the case and arrested the accused. Inspector Riyas Chakkeeri later submitted the chargesheet.

The prosecution examined 45 witnesses and produced 98 documents and 12 material objects before the court. Special public prosecutor K.V. Sabu appeared for the prosecution.

The three convicts were shifted to the Kannur Central Jail after the verdict.
