Yellow alert for Kozhikode, major rivers in spate

The India Meteorological department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Kozhikode on Monday (August 3, 2026), predicting isolated heavy rainfall in the district.

In view of the continuing heavy rain accompanied by water-logging in many parts of the district, including the upland areas, all the educational institutions will remain closed on the day. However, online classes will continue as usual. The authorities have issued an alert for those living on the banks of the Kuttiyadi River as the shutters of the Kakkayam Dam have been opened. As on Sunday (August 2, 2026) evening, 490 people belonging to 161 families have been lodged in 30 relief camps set up in Vadakara, Thamarassery, Koyilandy and Kozhikode taluks.

Though the district received moderate rainfall on Sunday, most of the low-lying areas are still water-logged. Major rivers such as Poonoor River and Iruvazhinji River are in spate. One autorickshaw driver had a narrow escape as his vehicle plunged into a waterbody at Kuttikkatoor. Soil erosion was reported early on Sunday morning at Meethale Mukkali in Vadakara near the area where the work on the national highway is going on. A well collapsed in Chemanchery.

A two-year-old child, who sustained grave injuries after falling into the waterlogged courtyard of his house, died at a private medical college hospital on Saturday (August 1, 2026). The victim was identified as Masin, son of Noushad, a resident of Kannankadavu near Kappad. The incident took place around noon on Saturday. Though he was rushed to a private clinic near his house, he was referred to the private medical college hospital. According to sources, the child, who was later placed on ventilator support, succumbed to injuries by 10:30 p.m. Residents said the courtyard of his house remained inundated after stormwater suddenly entered the area from a nearby road and drainage.

Meanwhile, all the events related to the Malabar River Festival, the annual white-water kayaking festival in the Iruvazhinji River, have been cancelled in view of the inclement weather. Though the four-day festival had begun on July 30, some of the events had to be stopped following heavy rain in recent days. Police and Fire Rescue Services personnel are keeping an alert in the area.
