Container ship loses control while leaving Cochin Port, moored safely

Container ship loses control while leaving Cochin Port, moored safely

Posted on August 2, 2026 By admin

A container ship lost control after reportedly suffering an engine failure while leaving Cochin Port on Saturday (August 1, 2026) night, triggering a brief period of tension. The vessel, SSL Mumbai, was brought to safety by two tugboats accompanying it, according to Cochin Port sources.

The vessel was proceeding to its designated anchorage area when it reportedly suffered the glitch about an hour after leaving the port at 6:30 p.m. It was safely steered by the tug vessels Ocan Enterprise and Vallarpadom. The ship, which had arrived at the International Container Transshipment Terminal at Vallarpadam in Kochi from Hazira Port in Gujarat on July 31, was scheduled to depart later, the sources said.

The ship has been moored at Ernakulam Wharf Q7 since the incident, and will leave the premises only after repair works, the sources added.
