A team of neonatologists at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, Chetpet, treated an extremely premature baby, born at 24 weeks of gestation and weighing 530 grams at birth.
A press release said the baby was discharged after spending 97 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, weighing 1.6 kg at the time.
The mother, admitted to the hospital for pregnancy care, had developed pregnancy-induced hypertension, which posed a risk to both her and the baby. The medical team performed an emergency Lower Segment Caesarean Section nearly four months before the expected due date.
The infant’s vital organs were severely underdeveloped and the chances of survival were low. It was admitted to the NICU and given surfactant therapy, mechanical ventilation, and medications to maintain blood pressure. After 97 days of intensive care, the baby transitioned to oral feeding, tolerating nutrients independently, the release said.
