West Bengal govt allocates 1,000 km of land to set up border fence of about 172 km along international border

West Bengal govt allocates 1,000 km of land to set up border fence of about 172 km along international border

Posted on July 14, 2026 By admin

The West Bengal government has allocated over 1000 acres of land for erecting border fences spanning over 172 km border with Bangladesh, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said.

“Ensuring national security and strengthening our borders is a top priority for our government. In our commitment to securing the India-Bangladesh Border, we have expedited the land transfer process to the Border Security Force (BSF) for the construction of essential fencing,” the Chief Minister said on social media.

Mr. Adhikari added that as on July 14, 2026 a “total of 1,024.75 acres of land spanning across 172.6 kms (of international border) has been formally handed over for this purpose”.

The district wise details of land allocated and the length of border fencing likely to indicate that about 337 acres was allocated in Murshidabad, where fencing was erected at 45.4 km, followed North 24 Parganas where the land allocated was 241.03 acres and fence likely to be erected was 42.07 km.

In the Cooch Behar district of North Bengal, border fences will be erected for about 39.39 kms and land allocated for the purpose was 135.33 acres. Similarly, in Malda, another district located in north Bengal, land allocated was about 176.78 acres and fencing will be erected for 20.15 kms.

The land has been allocated for setting up border fencing across nine bordering districts in the State and the Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said that his government will remain steadfast in our resolve to complete these projects to ensure a safer and more secure environment for our citizens.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has promised setting up fences along the areas unfenced with Bangladesh once the party came to power in West Bengal. The Suvendu Adhikari government is purchasing land directly from the farmers and handing it over to BSF. The Chief Minister over the past two months has described handing over land to the BSF for erecting border fencing as an achievement of his government. West Bengal shares a 2216 km border with Bangladesh and about 550 km of the border had remained unfenced before the BJP government came to power.
