Doctors at Telangana Government-run Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad have performed multi-visceral transplant, which is claimed as India’s first. They have transplanted five organs — stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small intestine, and right colon — on a single patient.

The 36-hour marathon surgery was carried out on a 30-year-old engineer from Sircilla district, who suffered from a rare and life-threatening condition. The surgery began on Monday (June 29, 2026) and concluded on Tuesday evening. It was learnt that the patient was recovering.

“This extraordinary achievement showcases the exceptional skill, dedication and commitment of our government doctors,” said Health Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha on Wednesday – when National Doctor’s Day is celebrated in the country. He congratulated the transplant team “for scripting a new chapter in India’s medical history”.

OGH Superintendent Rakesh Sahay said that doctors from multiple specialities were part of the team, including Nephrology, Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Anesthesia departments. All five organs were donated by a woman, at the hospital, who was declared brain dead. Besides, her eyes, skin, liver and kidney too were donated, said Dr. Sahay.

The doctors have consulted medical specialists in other countries where such surgeries were performed. Head of Surgical Gastroenterology C.H. Madhusudhan said that performing multi-visceral transplantation was a dream.
