Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan has directed the agencies involved in the construction of road overbridges on Cuddalore Road and over Uppanar canal to complete the works at the earliest.
During an inspection to assess the progress of the works on Monday, the Lt. Governor said the project should be completed without causing inconvenience to the public.
He inspected the ROB work in front of the court complex on Cuddalore Road following reports of traffic disruptions due to the project. Officials involved in the project informed the Lt. Governor that work was progressing fast and it could be completed as planned by March next year.
The officials requested government support in closing the road on the side of Anglo French Textiles completely to speed up the work. The complete closure would help in engaging more workers on shift basis and ensuring safety of road users, they said.
When the Lt. Governor inspected the work for the bridge over Uppanar, a section of residents led by local legislator Nehru alias Kuppusamy complained about flooding in the area during recent rains.
They said the dumping of earthen ramps and construction materials was blocking the flow of water in the canal. Rainwater had entered into residential areas adjacent to the canal during the recent rains, they added.
The Lt. Governor directed the officials to complete the critical areas before the monsoon set in. He wanted the works to be taken up without causing much difficulty to the residents. The project was also scheduled to be completed by March next year. Secretary to Government, Public Works Department, A. Muthamma and Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic, D. Divya were present.
