Scores of cadres of CPI (M), CPI and VCK staged a demonstration here protesting against the steep increase in the price of commercial cooking gas clyinders and the move to reduce 29,000 jobs in Indian Railways, here on Thursday.
The protesters demanded the roll-back of the cylinder price and withdrawal of the decision to surrender 2% of the jobs in railways.
Among those addressed the agitators are CPI (M) district secretary, A. Gurusamy, CPI former MP, P. Lingam, former MLA, T. Ramasamy and VCK functionaries, Senthilkani and S. Gnanaguru.
Mr. Gurusamy said that the sudden increase of ₹993 on commercial gas cylinders has badly affected the small eateries. Unable to afford the exorbitant price of gas cylinders many of them have shut down their shops. This had led to loss of jobs to hundreds of workers.
The common is also affected as the price of food items has increased heavily.
On the other hand, the price of domestic gas cylinders too has been increased by ₹60.
“When the international price of crude oil was very less, the Centre did not transfer its benefit to the common man. But, due to the US-Iran war, as the price of crude oil has increased, it wants the people to shoulder the burden,” Mr. Gurusamy added.
He also flayed the Modi Government for not allotting adequate funds for creating oil storage infrastructure to mitigate the times of distress caused by international war.
The speakers also criticised the Union Government for attempting to reduce the number of jobs in Indian Railways by 29,000.
“While the BJP-led Government had promised to create 2 crore jobs every year, it was instead reducing the jobs which will put the lives of youngsters in a jeopardy,” Mr. Gurusamy said.
Hence, the moved to give up 29,000 jobs should be withdrawn.
