Zerodha app glitched amid a sharp rally in Indian markets on Tuesday, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a trade deal with India that cuts reciprocal tariffs on Indian imports to 18% from 25%.

The issue was flagged by several Zerodha users with Redbox Global India taking to X to highlight major losses faced by several users as they couldn’t complete their trades in time on the low-cost brokerage app.

Other users also described delays in trade execution, frozen positions, and outdated prices in the first trading hour, leading to losses.

A user Doozer Daily wrote, “Glitches on a ‘big day’ like this are unacceptable. When markets rally after a landmark India‑US trade deal, retail investors can’t afford their broker to freeze. Zerodha must invest in stronger infra—low‑cost brokerage shouldn’t mean high‑cost losses.”

Namra Patel wrote, “Zerodha & Groww both freezed between 9:15 & 9:20 today. I use these apps. Its a shame that investors & traders are left helpless. Many wouldn’t have booked positions as gap in 5 mins was massive from previous open. Total thugs deliberately looting through finding loopholes. [sic]”

Downdector showed that there was indeed a downtime on Zerodha at around 9:00 a.m, though the brokerage platform has not issued any statement in this regard yet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making his podcast debut on Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath’s People by WTF series, said that he is aware of the memes that have been viral on social media for the last 1-2 years related to him and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In this light-hearted conversation, Mr. Kamath asked the question about the viral “Melodi Memes” featuring him and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

“PM Sir, as we are talking about other countries, if I may digress a little, I must say my favourite food is pizza, which originates from Italy. People often say that you know a lot about Italy. Would you like to share something about it? Haven’t you seen those memes?” he asked again.

To this, the Prime Minister responded, “Wo toh chalta rehta hai” (that’s an ongoing thing). “I don’t waste my time on that,” he added.

The two-hour podcast saw the Prime Minister sharing several anecdotes, including aspects of his childhood, education, entering politics, setbacks, handling stress, and policy management, among others.

New Delhi:

Answering a question on handling anxiety during a podcast with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the Godhra train burning incident in February 2002 – in which 59 people were killed – which took place just three days after he became an MLA for the first time.

PM Modi recalled how only a single-engine helicopter was available and his security team did not want him to fly on it. He also spoke about the emotions he felt when he visited the site and how he controlled them.

The Prime Minister said he became an MLA for the first time on February 24, 2002. He went to the Assembly for the first time three days later, on February 27, and that’s when he heard of the incident.

“I had been an MLA for only three days. And, suddenly, I came to know about that big incident in Godhra. There was a fire on the train. I came to know, gradually, that people were dead. I was obviously very restless, I was worried. As soon as I came out of the Assembly, I said that I wanted to go to Godhra. So, I told them that we would go to Vadodara and take a helicopter from there. They said that there was no helicopter. I told them to arrange it from somewhere. I guess ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) had one. It was a single-engine helicopter. They said they could not take a VIP. I said, ‘I am not a VIP. I am a common man. I will go’,” he said in Hindi.

This, the PM said, led to a big argument and that’s when he offered to give in writing that whatever happened would be his responsibility.

“And I reached Godhra. Now, with that painful sight… several bodies… you can imagine… I am also a human being, I also felt things. But I was aware that, being in this post… I have to stay detached from my emotions, my natural tendency as a human being. I have to rise above it all. And I did whatever I could to handle myself,” he recalled.

Responding to the anxiety question, the PM also spoke about the Gujarat elections held later that same year.

“In 2002, there were elections in Gujarat. It was the biggest challenge of my life… I never watched TV and didn’t check the results,” the PM said.

“At 11:00 am or noon, I heard the beat of drums outside the chief minister’s bungalow. I had told everyone not to inform me till 12 pm. Then our operator sent me a letter saying I was leading with a two-thirds majority. So, I don’t believe that nothing affected me that day, but I had a thought to overpower that feeling,” he explained.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a candid chat with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, making his podcast debut on the entrepreneur’s People by WTF series. During the podcast, he spoke about his unexpected journey in politics and how he deals with failures among other things.

“I am not someone who will spend his life crying over a setback… One has to take risks at every moment,” PM Modi said.

Citing the example of Chandrayaan-2, which failed at the last hurdle in 2019, the Prime Minister said that many people didn’t want him to go to the launch event.

“They said, ‘Sir, it is uncertain. Every country in the world has failed. They succeed only after the fourth or sixth attempt. What if something untoward happens?’ I said, ‘So what? Now, don’t I have any responsibility towards it? So I went,” he said.

“(Chandrayaan-2) crashed at the last moment. Everyone present there was worried. No one had the courage to inform the Prime Minister about it,” he added.

PM Modi recalled that he couldn’t sleep that night and decided to meet the team that worked on the mission before he left because “it was a big setback for the country”.

“I am not someone who will spend his life crying over a setback. I went in the morning and told all the scientists, ‘If there is a failure, then it is my responsibility’,” he said, adding he did everything to instil as much “confidence as I could in them. And Chandrayaan-3 was successful”.

Watch:

The mission control lost contact with the Chandrayaan-2 lunar module moments before its slated landing. Back at the ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru, K Sivan broke down. The Prime Minister, who had flown down to the southern city to watch the landing event, hugged and consoled Mr Sivan.

Chandrayaan-3 successfully landed on the moon on August 23, 2023, in a mission seen as crucial to lunar exploration and India’s standing as a space power.

The Prime Minister, during the podcast, also spoke about the lessons from the Chandrayaan-2 failure that he uses in politics.

“You see, taking risks in politics requires a lot of preparation. One has to take risks at every moment,” he said.

In the two-hour podcast, PM Modi also shared about his childhood, education, his journey in politics and how he handles anxiety.

With his brother Vinod, Gautam Adani added $48 billion to take the familys net worth to $116 billion

New Delhi:

Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani emerged as the biggest dollar gainer on Thursday among the list of Forbes India’s 100 richest tycoons, with the family’s net worth rising to $116 billion.

Along with his brother Vinod Adani, Gautam Adani added $48 billion to climb up to the second position on the list. The Forbes report said Mr Adani posted a strong recovery from “last year’s short-selling attack”. This amounts to a 71 percent rise in wealth.

Reliance Industries chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani’s wealth increased by $27.5 billion to bring his total net worth to $119.5 billion. Mr Ambani’s wealth rose by 30 percent, even as he emerged as the second biggest dollar gainer this year. Reliance had announced a bonus issue of shares as a Diwali gift to Reliance investors.

In a record-breaking year, the collective wealth of India’s 100 richest tycoons surpassed the trillion dollar milestone for the first time as more than 80 per cent of the country’s richest tycoons are now wealthier than they were a year ago and twice as rich as they were in 2019, the Forbes report showed.

More than 80% of the richest Indians are wealthier with 58 of them adding $1 billion or more to their respective net worths. Half a dozen fortunes swelled by more than $10 billion each, including the top five, who as a group gained nearly $120 billion. The top 12 list members account for roughly half the group’s combined wealth.

India’s richest woman Savitri Jindal, matriarch of steel-to-power conglomerate OP Jindal Group, whose son Sajjan Jindal recently made an ambitious foray into electric vehicles with MG Motor, moved up to No. 3 for the first time. She’s one of nine women on the list, up from eight a year ago.

The new woman in the ranks is Mahima Datla, who controls privately-held vaccine producer Biological E. She’s one of four newcomers to the list, a group that includes B Partha Saradhi Reddy, founder of Hetero Labs, a maker of generic medicines and pharma ingredients.

The two other new faces are Harish Ahuja, whose apparel maker Shahi Exports supplies to labels such as H&M and Calvin Klein; India’s booming IPO market made Surender Saluja, founder and chairman of Premier Energies, which makes solar panels and modules, a multi-billionaire after his company got listed in September.

Dilip Shanghvi, founder of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, jumped three spots to No. 5 with $32.4 billion on rising demand for its skin treatments for everything from acne to psoriasis; siblings Sudhir & Samir Mehta, whose Torrent Group flagship Torrent Pharmaceuticals is eyeing acquisitions, more than doubled their wealth to $16.3 billion.

Four prominent property fortunes on the list were up more than $16 billion combined. Another notable real estate gainer was Irfan Razack and his siblings, whose Bangalore-based developer Prestige Estates Projects rode the boom in India’s tech capital and is now making a mark in Mumbai, the country’s financial hub. The family is one of five members who had previously dropped out of the ranks but rejoined after a hiatus. The other four made their fortunes in everything from operating airports to making industrial explosives.

The storied Godrej family finally concluded a division of their holdings between two factions in April and as a result they appear separately for the first time: brothers Adi & Nadir Godrej, who control the listed companies under the Godrej Industries Group, and their cousins Jamshyd Godrej and Smita Crishna Godrej, who control their privately held flagship Godrej & Boyce under the Godrej Enterprises Group.

The youngest list member is Nikhil Kamath, 38 who cofounded and runs discount brokerage Zerodha with his brother Nithin, 45.

Take care and take a break, investor Ashneer Grover advised Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath who announced today that he suffered a mild stroke some weeks ago.

“Around 6 weeks ago, I had a mild stroke out of the blue. Dad passing away, poor sleep, exhaustion, dehydration, and overworking out – any of these could be possible reasons,” said 44-year-old Nithin Kamath, in a post on X.

Soon after Mr Kamath’s post, wishes poured in from the industry.

“Dude – take care. Most likely you are deeply affected because of passing away of your dad – it got me too after my dad’s demise – I simply collapsed one day. Take a break!” ace investor Ashneer Grover, co founder of BharatPe, posted.

“My goodness, this has been a super tough time for you Nithin, take it easy and wish you the best to be healthy and smiling soon!” posted Deepak Shenoy, founder, Capital Mind CEO.

“Hey buddy. Take care. Here if you need anything. Wish you a speedy recovery. Admire your resilience,” said Bhavin Turakhia, founder Zeta suite, provider of next-gen credit card processing platform.

Mr Kamath said he was recovering but still “getting my treadmill count” and posted two contrasting pictures – one on his hospital bed and in another on a treadmill to drive home the message.

“I’ve gone from having a big droop in the face and not being able to read or write to having a slight droop but being able to read and write more. From being absent-minded to more present-minded. So, 3 to 6 months for full recovery.

“I wondered why a person who’s fit and takes care of himself could be affected. The doctor said you need to know when you need to shift the gears down a bit,” he added.
