The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains in the hunt for new support staff after appointing Gautam Gambhir as the senior men’s team’s new head coach. Gambhir himself has also been quite keen to wrap up the search for his coaching staff soon, though his suggestions for different roles in the team haven’t reportedly been well received by the board. Gambhir had suggested the names of R Vinay Kumar, Morne Morkel, Abhishek Nayar, Ryan Ten Doeschate, Jonty Rhodes, and Laxmipathy Balaji for different roles, but the board seems to be in agreement on only one of these players.

As per a report in the Economic Times, the BCCI has rejected all of Gambhir’s suggestions, barring Abhishek Nayar, who works as Kolkata Knight Riders’ assistant coach at present. Though no formal announcement has taken place, the BCCI is reportedly in agreement with Gambhir’s request to add him as coaching staff.

But, the bowling and fielding coach’s spots remain wide open, with the board not keen to appoint Morkel, Vinay Kumar Balaji, Rhodes, or Ten Doeschate to these roles. In the past, the BCCI has given a free hand to Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid to select their coaching staff. But, the same doesn’t seem to be true for Gambhir.

The BCCI reportedly wants Zaheer Khan as the next bowling coach of the Indian team. Zaheer, one of the finest pacers to have played the game, picked up 311 Test wickets in 92 matches and overall 610 scalps in 309 international matches across all formats for India. He is considered one of the greatest left-arm pacers to have played the sport.

Balaji’s name was reportedly also discussed. He represented Team India in eight Test matches where he has managed to snap 27 wickets at an average of 37.18. On the other hand, he bagged 34 wickets in 30 ODIs at an average of 39.52.

The term of Paras Mahambrey, who was the bowling coach of team India when Rahul Dravid was the head coach, has come to an end. As for the fielding coach, it has also been reported that T Dilip’s tenure could be extended.

Following the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach on Tuesday, former seamers Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji are being considered for the position of national team’s bowling coach, as per sources. “BCCI discussing the names of Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipati Balaji for the position of bowling coach. BCCI is not interested in the name of Vinay Kumar,” sources told ANI. Zaheer has picked up 311 Test wickets in 92 matches and overall 610 scalps in 309 international matches across all formats for Men in Blue. He is considered one of the greatest left-arm pacers to have played the sport.

Balaji has represented Team India in eight Test matches where he has managed to snap 27 wickets at an average of 37.18. On the other hand, he has bagged 34 wickets in 30 ODIs at an average of 39.52.

The appointment of a new set of support staff for Team India follows the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as head coach. The term of Paras Mahambrey, who was the bowling coach of team India, has come to an end.

Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday announced that former cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the Indian men’s cricket team’s new head coach.

Gambhir was a left-handed opener for the India team and served as Kolkata Knight Riders’ team mentor in the Indian Premier League 2024. KKR lifted their third IPL trophy this season under Gambhir’s guidance.

Jay Shah took to his official X account and announced Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s new Head Coach.

The BCCI secretary added that he has his full confidence in Gambhir and that he will be the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward.

“It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward. His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The @BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey,” Shah wrote on X.

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of Team India came to an end after the conclusion of the final match of the T20 World Cup 2024, where India beat South Africa by seven runs to win the prestigious trophy after 17 years.

Punjab Kings didn’t utilise young Arshdeep Singh properly during the just-concluded IPL but the left-arm pacer can be very effective during the death overs at the T20 World Cup along with Jasprit Bumrah, reckons former India pacer Rudra Pratap Singh. The left-arm seamer got 19 wickets from 14 games but an economy rate of 10.03, primarily due to the ‘impact player’ onslaught left him a bit dazed. RP Singh, India’s bowling hero in the 2007 edition of the T20 World Cup in South Africa, said he will prefer Arshdeep over Mohammed Siraj.

“If we assess Arshdeep on the basis of his IPL performance, I think he hasn’t been utilised well,” RP Singh said while replying to a PTI query during a promotional event where the Indian team’s jersey was unveiled for the inaugural World Championship of Legends.

“The utilisation of the bowlers also depends on their captain, in which conditions he uses them, in which situation he makes them bowl and how best that he thinks his bowler is.” RP Singh, feels that wicket at Nassau County will be on the slower side and Arshdeep rather than bowling pacey length deliveries should focus on cutters.

“Talking about the length on the tracks in USA during an early morning start, as per my understanding, there should a bit of slowness in the wicket. So, the ideal length will be somewhere around just short of good length.

“There will be not a lot of swing for the bowlers but the bowlers with variations, not only just yorkers but also slower ones, leg and off cutters. These deliveries will be utilised a bit more by Arshdeep, so the success rate will be automatically higher for him and that’s what I understand the wickets in the US.” RP feels that Jasprit Bumrah should ideally bowl three overs in the back-10 as that would put pressure on opposition batting unit.

“Death bowling is really important in T20 cricket. Bumrah may bowl three overs in the death. He is our mainstay there. My preference alongside Bumrah in the death is Arshdeep over Siraj because of the variations he has. I think Siraj can be impactful in a game when he is bowling with the new ball. Otherwise, it should be Bumrah and Arshdeep.” Arshdeep, as a left-armer, will always create those difficult angles for right-handers and hence becomes an important cog in the wheel. The World T20 reserves also has another left-armer in Khaleel Ahmed.

“Left arm pacers are always an advantage especially against right-handed batters. It is not like two or more left-arm seamers can’t play together. Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra and I have played in multiple games together.” For the perfect balance, Hardik Pandya needs to bowl his full quota of overs as it would give the team the luxury to play three specialist spinners and a chance to include Yuzvendra Chahal alongside Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja in the eleven.

“Hardik bowled in the IPL and bowled four overs so there’s no injury scare. Hardik’s bowling will be important and he will have to bowl all his quota of 4-overs. If Shivam Dube bowls too, then it will be an added advantage for India ahead.

“Shivam may not play some matches initially but whenever he plays, he will perform well and score runs for India.”

After the completion of the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League 2024, former India speedster Zaheer Khan spoke about the banter between Virat Kohli and Ishant Sharma on Sunday. RCB continued with their second-half surge, making it five wins in five matches and climbing up to the fifth spot with a 47-run win over DC at their home ground of M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After losing seven of the first eight league games, RCB has turned their season around with five successive wins to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The former cricketer asserted that Kohli and Ishant’s moments rarely happen on the field.

“When things are slipping out of your hands, you have to back yourself to take the wicket of a big player. It was the first time he’d dismissed him, so that was a great moment, especially their banter. Winning and losing is a part of the game. Sometimes you will be hit for runs and sometimes, you will take a wicket, and that oversaw both of those things. You rarely get to see moments like these, even their banter, especially from Virat Kohli. They are good friends and that’s why we got such a great moment, it’s part of the game,” Zaheer said on Jio Cinema.

Coming to the match, DC opted to bowl first after winning the toss. Knocks from Rajat Patidar (52 in 32 balls), Will Jacks (41 in 29 balls,), Cameron Green (32* in 24 balls, with one four and two sixes) and Virat Kohli (27) took RCB to 187/9 in their 20 overs.

Rasikh Salam (2/23) and Khaleel Ahmed (2/31) were the pick of the bowlers for DC.

In the run-chase of 188 runs, Delhi was restricted to 30/4 at one point. A partnership of 56 runs between Shai Hope (29 in 23 balls) and Axar Patel helped DC back into the game. Stand-in captain, Axar scored his second half-century of the season, making 57 in 39 balls to keep his side alive. However, RCB bowlers kept the run flow in control and bundled out DC for 140 runs in 19.1 overs, winning by 47 runs.

Yash Dayal (3/20) and Lockie Ferguson (2/23) were among the top bowlers for RCB.

Cameron Green secured the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his knock of 32*, figures of 1/19 in four overs and a run-out of in-form Tristan Stubbs.

RCB’s fifth consecutive win has catapulted them to fifth place on the points table, a position that appeared practically unattainable three weeks ago when they fell by a run to KKR, their sixth defeat in a row. They currently have 12 points, with a potential to reach 14 when they play CSK in their final league game. The Men in Yellow have 14 points. A win in this game might offer them a chance to enter the playoffs, but only if other outcomes go their way since SRH and LSG (two games left for each side, both have 12 points) can both advance to 16 points and knock RCB out.

During the match, both teams had several moments of lighthearted banter.

Virat Kohli hit Ishant Sharma for a boundary and a six in his second over, creating a brief exchange of words between the fast bowler and the batter. However, Ishant got the final word when Kohli left for 27 runs after nicking a wide ball to the wicketkeeper two deliveries later. Ishant exclaimed with delight before engaging in a cordial exchange with Ishant Sharma. The bowler then came to a halt in front of Kohli, giving him a tug in jubilation.

Later in the match, when the Delhi Capitals lost wickets at regular intervals in their quest of 188 runs, Ishant Sharma joined the crease at number 11, and the two exchanged light-hearted banter.

Former India pace spearhead Zaheer Khan has picked Rishabh Pant as the sole wicketkeeper in his team for the T20 World Cup while handing out international debut to left-arm seamer Yash Dayal to add a new dimension to the attack. One of Zaheer’s most interesting selections was the 26-year-old Dayal, who represents Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League. He has taken into account Mohammed Shami‘s injury layoff while picking his squad.

“When I talk about Yash Dayal, it’s a floating spot when the 15 are announced because Mohammed Shami will not be available for the tournament.

“He’s one bowler that if you need someone to bowl up, you have Yash Dayal. If you want a back-end bowler and if Siraj’s form is spotty, he can be used there as well,” Zaheer told Jio Cinema.

Zaheer also selected Delhi Capitals’ captain Pant as the only wicket-keeper in his squad, overlooking others such as Sanju Samson, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan.

“Rishabh Pant is my only wicket-keeper. I have given more importance to bringing four pace bowlers. You don’t want to sacrifice a fast bowler for another wicketkeeper. You have options like KL Rahul, Sanju Samson, and many want to see Dinesh Karthik.

“At this point, we can consider Mahendra Singh Dhoni as well because of his strike rate! I think they’ll focus on current players like Samson, KL Rahul, and maybe even Jitesh Sharma.

“If you’re building a team for a month-long tournament, your travelling reserve can be your wicketkeeper.”

Zaheer named 16 players in his squad, with the caveat that only one player between Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill and Rajasthan Royals’ opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will be selected as Rohit Sharma‘s opening partner.

“The toughest decision the selectors will have to make will be choosing one opener out of two terrific options. Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, I think only one of them will make it because the think-tank will want flexibility in the team.

“A player can’t be limited to just one role, they might need to move around the batting order.”

Zaheer Khan’s India squad for T20 World Cup:

Batters: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill/Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh

All-Rounders: Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja

Wicket-Keeper: Rishabh Pant

Bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Yash Dayal, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal.

Echoing the views of India captain Rohit Sharma, former pacer Zaheer Khan on Thursday raised serious concerns over the ‘Impact Player’ rule in the IPL, saying it produces “half-baked all-rounders”. The ‘Impact Player’ rule, introduced in the 2023 season, allows all IPL teams to substitute a player — batter or bowler — during the innings. Experts have argued that the concept negates the role of an all-rounder. Someone like Shivam Dube has only been used as a power-hitter by his franchise Chennai Super Kings. Dube, also medium pacer, is in contention for the seam bowling all-rounder’s option in the India set-up for the T20 World Cup but he has hardly got an opportunity to showcase his talent with the ball.

“I completely agree it’s debatable, little concern for sure. But we need to find a way on how to deal with it. In Impact Player rule you will find half all-rounders but not not a complete one,” Zaheer said in an online interaction facilitated by JioCinema.

Zaheer, who was one of India’s trump cards in the team’s 2011 ODI World Cup win at home, feels Mohammed Siraj should accompany pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the T20 World Cup squad.

Siraj’s form in this IPL has been a point worry for Royal Challengers Bengaluru as he has just snapped four wickets in six innings, with a strike rate of 33.00 and at an economy of 10.41.

Besides Siraj, Zaheer also feels left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh should also be a part of the squad.

“The team selection is still two weeks away but Arshdeep is a serious hopeful and the selectors are looking at him. Khaleel Ahmed, Mohsin Khan and Yash Dayal will also be closely watched,” the 45-year-old left-arm former pacer said.

“Siraj has been doing very well but at times it’s about the format. But he is potent enough to make a comeback. It’s all about finding the zone again and I think he should be part of the T20 World Cup squad,” he added.

Who should don the wicketkeeping gloves in the T20 World Cup?

“I am happy with his (Rishabh Pant’s) progress. I was not confident how he will fare after such a long break ahead of the IPL. But in the last 6-7 matches his progress, his leadership, skills and wicket-keeping succeeded in all aspects.”

Mumbai Indians new skipper Hardik Pandya has been facing a lot of flak from the team’s fan base this season after replacing Rohit Sharma.

Under his leadership, the team’s performance has been shaky too but Zaheer said the best way to answer the critics is through his game.

“This is just a different aspect of franchise cricket. 17 years ago when IPL started we never knew how it will be treated or received but now fans have become loyal to franchises. Franchise cricket is evolving. There is no better way to deal with this than let your game speak,” he said.

Punjab Kings found a new gem in the form of uncapped batter Ashutosh Sharma who hit some exquisite shots to almost take his team across the line in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Mumbai Indians on Thursday. With his 28-ball 61, Ashutosh took Punjab close to Mumbai’s total of 192 runs but his dismissal brought an end to the hosts’ chase of the target that looked impossible at one point of time. While Ashutosh hit 7 sixes during his stay at the crease, his finest attempt came against Jasprit Bumrah when he dispatched a yorker to the stands.

Ashutosh left Mumbai Indians bowlers rattled, smashing them all across the park. While he was expected to go after MI bowlers like Gerald Coetzee, Akash Madhwal and Hardik Pandya, it was his stunning sweep six against Bumrah that left everyone in awe.

Ashutosh Sharma’s sweep six against Jasprit Bumrah:

Even former India pacer Zaheer Khan admitted being stunned seeing Ashutosh’s six against Bumrah.

“But tonight looked like Ashutosh was in the zone and that shot, which he played off Bumrah. No one, I mean, no one we’ve seen can play that kind of sweep shot to Bumrah, anticipating that yorker, going ahead and then yet managing,” said Zaheer on Jio Cinema after the match.

“Well, I mean four down. Who would have given them any chance of getting back in this game? But these two guys, it’s just unbelievable stuff.”

“And they’ve already secured those two points for Punjab. Earlier, when both of these guys batted together. Shashank, obviously that time was a hero,” added Zaheer.

After the match, Ashutosh also admitted that he had practiced the sweep shot multiple times and it was his dream to execute it against Bumrah. In the game, hence, the PBKS star managed to fulfil his dream.

The Indian cricket team’s 2023 World Cup squad announcement will be made on Tuesday. All eyes are on the 15 members who will be named for the mega event. That India haven’t won any ICC trophy since the 2013 Champions Trophy puts the Rohit Sharma-led team under more focus. While the team is full of heavyweights, India’s form going into the World Cup has not been exceptional. There are stars who are coming back from injury while the Indian batting top order has been regularly asked difficult questions by top teams.

Going into the World Cup, 2011 winner Gautam Gambhir named the one man who can make a huge difference to the side’s chances at the quadrennial event.

“We talk about Yuvraj Singh, MS’ innings, my innings, but actually it was Zaheer Khan, who set us the entire tournament. You look at the spell against England where he got Andrew Strauss, you look at the spell at World Cup final. Five over four maidens, 1/1. That’s how you set the tone. That’s why I can’t look beyond Jaspreet Bumrah if India has to…he has to have a A-tournament,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Former Indian cricket team opener Gautam Gambhir named his picks for the ICC World Cup 2023 squad and it came with a couple of surprise choices. Both Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur did not find any place in his squad and instead, Gambhir picked all-rounder Washington Sundar and also pacer Prasidh Krishna as the fourth fast bowling option. In the batting department, he went with Suryakumar Yadav with KL Rahul as the second wicket-keeping option behind Ishan Kishan who will be the top pick for the position.

During an interaction on Star Sports, Gambhir picked Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul as specialist batting options. Ishan Kishan was the wicket-keeping option with Sanju Samson missing the cut. Even Tilak Varma did not find any place in his squad.
