Skipper Sam Curran played the lead act hitting a well-paced fifty and taking two wickets, as Punjab Kings consigned Rajasthan Royals to a five-wicket defeat in their IPL match in Guwahati on Wednesday. The target was a mere 145, but Kings made heavy weather of it on a sluggish track here but Curran (63 not out, 41b, 5×4, 3×6) had a calm head and skills to lift them to their fifth win of the season. PBKS made 145/5 in 18.5 overs. The Englishman received good support from Jitesh Sharma (22, 20b) as the pair added 63 runs in a fluent fifth wicket partnership.

For Royals, it was their fourth defeat on the trot, but they remained second on the table with 16 points with a qualification to the playoffs to boot with.

The Kings’ chase began on a shaky note as they lost Prabhsimran Singh in the first over itself to Trent Boult.

But bigger jolts were in store as an impressive Avesh Khan (2/28) scalped two wickets in the fifth over.

The right-arm pacer first plucked the important wicket of Rilee Rossouw, who played some strong shots in his 13-ball 22, and then jettisoned in-form Shashank Singh for a two-ball naught.

Shashank failed to connect a fuller, straighter one from Avesh while attempting a flick, and the 141 kmph delivery thudded on his bat. Shashank did not even bother to use DRS as he walked away.

Punjab gained some ground through the alliance between Curran and Jitesh, who smoked R Ashwin for two sixes.

Curran too gave a dose of punishment to the veteran offie, lofting him for a wonderful six over extra cover.

But the blossoming stand was snapped by Yuzvendra Chahal (2/31), leaving PBKS at 111 for five in the 16th over.

However, Curran and Ashutosh Sharma (17 not out, 11 balls) knocked off the remaining runs without further drama.

Earlier, despite a well-tuned 48 from local hero Riyan Parag, RR struggled against an array of accurate bowlers on a rather slow pitch, meandering to a sub-par 144 for nine.

R Ashwin (28, 19b, 3×4, 1×6) and Parag (48, 34, 6×4) tried to accelerate during their 50-run stand for the fourth wicket but it could only bring in a temporary momentum for RR.

In fact, lethargy had set in very early in the Rajasthan innings after the early loss of Jaiswal, who chopped a Curran (2/24) delivery back on to his stumps.

Sanju Samson (18), who went past 500-run in a season for the first time in his IPL career, and Tom-Kohler Cadmore (18, 23b) stitched 36 runs for the second wicket but took six overs for it.

But with Curran and Arshdeep finding a hint of swing and maintaining a good line, scoring was not an easy proposition for the RR batters.

Eventually, Samson, who tried a hopping cut off pacer Nathan Ellis, gave a simple catch to Rahul Chahar at point in the seventh over.

Cadmore too returned to the dugout in the next over, as his almighty heave off leg-spinner Chahar (2/26) could not progress beyond Jitesh in the deep.

Those twin dismissals actually paved the way for the best phase in the Royals’ innings as Ashwin and Parag pressed their foot on the right pedal.

Ashwin displayed his batting skills, smashing Chahar for 17 runs in the 12th over that included a sequence of 6, 4, 4 and the first four was a stunning reverse scoop over backward point.

But he could not further extend his innings, lofting Arshdeep to Shashank.

Parag, usually a free-flowing batter, had to curb his flair in front of a hugely adoring home crowd because of the regular fall of wickets at the other end.

But a late cut off Curran that sped to third man stood as a testament of his ability and timing as he also moved past the 500-run mark for the season, before getting trapped in front of the wicket by Harshal Patel.

However, apart from conquering those little peaks the RR batters failed to slip into the top gear consistently.

Jos Buttler roared back to form with a masterful century that overshadowed Virat Kohli’s record-extending 113 as Rajasthan Royals defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru by six wickets for a fourth win in as many matches in the IPL on Saturday. Royals now have four wins out of four and sit on top of 10 team table while RCB slipped to eighth spot with fourth defeat and three on trot. While Kohli enhanced his status as RCB’s lone ranger by notching up his eighth IPL century but RCB could only manage a below-par 183/3 after the home side opted to bowl.

Then, the England white-ball skipper in his 100th IPL appearance chose to ruin Kohli’s evening by playing a knock that was way better compared to former India skipper’s effort both in intent and quality.

Buttler, who ended IPL 2023 with three successive ducks and scored a highest of 13 in his last three innings, anchored the chase with five balls to spare.

Buttler finished the chase with a six off Cameron Green over deep square leg in the last over that also notched up his sixth IPL century.

His effort came off just 58 balls, laced with nine fours and four sixes.

Skipper Sanju Samson gave a fine support to Buttler in a record 148-run partnership — the highest of the season — that virtually killed the contest.

Samson ended up with 69 runs from 42 balls with eight fours and two sixes. Rajasthan Royals now are on the top of the table with eight points, ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders on net run-rate.

On a day, Rajasthan Royals spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal (2/34) and Ravichandran Ashwin (0/28) turned it around for the home side, by choking RCB in the middle overs, RCB bowling looked woefully short.

The likes of Mayank Dagar and Himanshu Sharma failed to make any dent to the Royals’ chase.

As it turned out, Chahal, who was released by RCB before the IPL 2022 auction, came to prove the difference against his former side.

Following a watchful start, Buttler made his intention clear in the last over of the power play when he picked rookie left-arm spinner Dagar to unleash his fury.

He punched him firmly for a boundary with his silken timing, and then smashed him for four, six and another four in a 20-run over.

From being 10 from 10 balls at the start, Buttler raced to his fifty from just 30 balls — which was nine balls lesser than what Kohli took for his milestone.

For Buttler the 20th IPL fifty came after a long wait of eight innings.

The Englishman read the length well, dished out his silken cover drives, and lofted over the bowlers’ head by playing late to boss the RCB bowling that looked ordinary.

Samson also stepped it up in Dagar’s second over, the 11th of the innings, spanking him for two fours and one six with an inside out loft shot to notch his second fifty this season.

The fifty came in just 33 balls for the Royals skipper as the duo bossed the chase in their century-plus partnership.

Siraj finally gave the much-needed breakthrough dismissing Sanju in the 15th over but by then the chase was just a formality, reducing the equation to 32 needed from last five overs.

Earlier, Kohli smashed 12 fours and four sixes and barring the assistance received from his skipper Faf Du Plessis (44 from 33 balls; 2×4, 2×6), he did not get any support from the other batters.

After reaching his fifty in 39 balls, Kohli stepped up well and took just 28 balls for his next fifty as he reached the milestone with a single off Nandre Burger in the penultimate over.

Glenn Maxwell (1) and debutant left-hander Saurav Chauhan (9), who failed to replicate his Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 form, fell cheaply.

Credit should go to RR spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin (0/28) and Chahal (2/34) who stifled the proceedings in the middle overs.

Chahal was exceptional as he cleverly deceived the batters with his pace and variations by bowling googlies and sliders to fox the RCB batters. While Kohli did score a hundred, he could never really dominate the bowling and in the end the hundred mattered very little.

Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal‘s wife Dhanashree Verma has boosted the confidence of the player ahead of his debut for English county side Kent. After being overlooked by the national selectors for the ongoing Asia Cup and upcoming ODI World Cup, Chahal signed up with Kent and he will be playing three County Championship games for Kent. He will be available for Kent’s remaining home matches against Nottinghamshire and Lancashire, as well as the away game versus Somerset. “Always so proud of you. You are our legend,” wrote Dhanashree on her Instagram story, adding, “Let’s show some more magic.”

Chahal will become the second Indian to be playing for the side after seamer Arshdeep Singh, who featured in five games for Kent in June-July, capturing 13 wickets.

As for Kent, it is currently placed at the ninth spot of the Division 1 table and faces the risk of being relegated.

Former Indian cricket team spinner Harbhajan Singh was left surprised with the side’s decision to not include Chahal in the Cricket World Cup 2023 squad.

The team management went with Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel as the spin bowling with Axar and Jadeja being all-rounders. There was extra focus on all-rounders in the team selection as India also included Shardul Thakur and Hardik Pandya. “Surprise not to see @yuzi_chahal in the World Cup squad for Team India. pure Match winner,” he posted on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
