Shubman Gill was happy to tick off the “chase” box from his skipper’s check list in an emphatic manner as he was glowing in his praise for young team comprising of “great bunch of players”. Yashasvi Jaiswal (93 off 53 balls) and skipper Gill (58 off 39 balls) hunted down a target of 153 with 28 balls to spare and the skipper expects this team to move forward in right direction. “Chasing was one thing we talked about. We could not do it in the first game, so good to get it done. The job is not done, though,” Gill stated during the post-match presentation.

“This is a great team, great bunch of players. Hopefully, we will be able to take the team forward.” With the series already in the pocket, when asked about changes in the playing XI for the final fixture on Sunday, Gill did not reveal anything significant.

“Haven’t had the discussion with the coach. If there are any changes, we will let you know at the toss tomorrow,” he added.

Meanwhile, Jaiswal was adjudged the man of the match for his commanding outing with the bat, while he admitted that he had to enjoy the decent batting turf at play on Saturday.

“I really enjoyed my batting today. I had my plans for different bowlers. The ball was coming on when it was new and as it got old, it was quite slow. I enjoyed batting with Shubman,” he said.

“I understood and changed my game. We really enjoyed together. Initially, I wanted to go after my shots. After that, I wanted to rotate and wanted to stay till the end.” Jaiswal said that for him, the more important aspect is his process of preparation. “My diet, sleeping pattern, how I am executing my plans in practice However, on the other hand, Zimbabwean captain Sikandar Raza had a contrasting take on the Harare pitch, which he felt was slow, especially when his team was put in to bat first.

“I think because the wicket was a touch on the slower side, we thought 160 was a par score, but 180 wouldn’t have been enough. Today is the day you hold your heads high and say they batted better,” he opinionated.

“The heavy roller did the trick for them. It became a beautiful wicket.” But Raza expressed his confidence in the team gaining confidence and that they would become a competitive side soon.

“I am very sure we will be a very competitive side in a short time. There was a bit of kick (and) bounce, and we had to reign ourselves in. We will want to finish the series 3-2 tomorrow,” he concluded.

Worked a lot on my cutters and yorkers: Khaleel Ahmed

Notably, Khaleel bowled quite a few slower deliveries, and the trick worked against the Chevrons, as he seized the wickets of Dion Myers (12) and Clive Madande (7) in the closing stages of the innings.

Commenting on the same, the 26-year-old thanked his stint as a reserve player for the Men in Blue during the T20 World Cup in the Americas, where he worked on his slower ones.

“I was part of the World Cup reserves, and there, I worked a lot on my cutters and yorkers. I am very happy with my performance. The kind of rhythm I have got, and the execution has been great,” he told the broadcaster following the victory.

“This series is everything for me. When I was not part of the dressing room, I was missing it a lot. Very happy to be a part of it. We have all played in the IPL; we are all together in this.”

Rajasthan Royals ended Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s roller coaster run in the Indian Premier League with a scratchy four-wicket win in the Eliminator in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. After their bowlers had done their part well to keep RCB to 172/8, RR batters stuttered in the middle overs to allow RCB back into the contest which remained hung in balance for the majority of the second half, but the 2008 winners eventually got home with an over to spare. Chasing 173, Rajasthan ended with 174/6 as Rovman Powell (16 not out) provided the finishing touches in a tense finish.

As he has done several times before this season, Riyan Parag (36 off 26) showcased deep resolve in an adverse situation to help Rajasthan stay alive in the tournament. It was Royals’ first win after four losses and an abandoned game.

2008 winners Royals face Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai on Friday for a place in the IPL final.

The returning Shimron Hetmyer also played his part to perfection, scoring a crucial 26 off 14 balls.

In a contest wherein fortunes swung from one side to another, RR remained ahead with impactful performances throughout even though Mohammed Siraj (2/33) raised late hopes for RCB with wickets of Parag and Hetmyer in the 18th over, With 13 needed off last two overs, Powell found two fours off Lockie Ferguson to seal the deal in favour of his side.

Earlier, it was Yashasvi Jaiswal (45 off 30) who gave them the impetus at the top.

Off to an unconvincing start with his initial runs coming off the outside edge, Jaiswal grew in confidence when Yash Dayal fed him a few deliveries to capitalise on and the RR opener cracked four fours in the third over to break the shackles.

At the other end, Tom Kohler-Cadmore (20) also hit a couple of fours against Siraj and while getting a lifeline from Glenn Maxwell, who spilled a sitter at deep square leg off Dayal.

With RR’s acceleration rapidly shaving runs off the target, RCB needed a breakthrough and Lockie Ferguson provided the first success when he foxed Kohler-Cadmore with a slow yorker which crashed into the stumps.

The gradual progression of Jaiswal’s innings saw the batter finding his rhythm, but the extreme heat sapped him out completely having faced a mere 29 balls.

In between the ninth and the 10th over, Jaiswal received on-field treatment and got back up only to play a loose shot – an attempted ramp off Cameron Green but only gloved it to the ‘keeper.

Soon after, Karn Sharma dealt a body blow by having Sanju Samson (17) stumped.

With their tails up, RCB continued making inroads with Dhruv Jurel (8) being run out after a brilliant effort from Virat Kohli and Cameron Green. Kohli fired a sharp throw from deep midwicket to the non-striker’s end, where Jurel was found short of his crease.

RR were firmly under pressure heading into the 15th over when they chose to go after Green, who had been all over them with three tidy overs and a wicket up until then.

Hetmyer smacked the Australian for a six and Parag followed his partner in hitting another, while also finding a four to collect 17 runs.

Earlier, Rajasthan Royals put forth a sharp bowling effort.

Led by Trent Boult (4-0-16-1), who produced an opening spell of 3-0-6-1, RR bowlers kept taking wickets at crucial stages to control the game.

The venerable Ravichandran Ashwin (4-0-19-2), having previously gone wicketless for a significant stretch, left an indelible mark with wickets Cameron Green (27) and Glenn Maxwell (0) on consecutive deliveries while Avesh Khan (3/44) also chipped in.

Rajasthan’s bowling was adequately backed up by their fielders, particularly Rovman Powell, who took two stunning catches that clipped RCB’s progress.

With the first half of Indian Premier League 2024 done and dusted, several players have all but cemented their spots in India’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 courtesy of strong performances in the ongoing IPL season. While IPL performances alone will not be enough to secure spots in India’s squad considering international experience will also come into play, let’s have a look at what the Men in Blue squad could look like if player performances from the first half of IPL 2024 would be a criteria for squad selection.

Here, we have a look at India’s probable 15-member squad while also assessing a few players who have an outside chance of making the cut since every participating team will get an opportunity to change players in their initial squad till May 25, a week prior to the start of the tournament.

Rohit Sharma (C)

Already confirmed as captain of India’s T20 WC squad by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, Rohit Sharma is Mumbai Indians’ leading scorer this season with 303 runs in eight games. He’s scored almost 4000 runs for India in T20Is and will play a key role in the powerplay overs as India’s opener.

Yashasvi Jaiswal

After a slow start to IPL 2024, Yashasvi Jaiswal finally found form when he scored an unbeaten 104 against Mumbai Indians in Rajasthan Royals’ last encounter. Jaiswal has managed 225 runs in eight games for the Royals this season and boasts four fifties as well as a ton with a strike rate of 161.93 in T20Is.

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill hasn’t set the T20I stage ablaze despite scoring a hundred and fifty for India. His form as Gujarat Titans’ skipper in IPL 2024 though puts him in the reckoning. He has made 298 runs in eight games at an average of 42.57 and a strike rate of 146.97 in IPL 2024.

Virat Kohli

The leading run-scorer in IPL 2024 with 379 runs at an average of 63.16 and a strike rate of 150.39, Virat Kohli is a certainty for India’s squad. He’s made the most runs (4037) in T20Is with an average of over 50, making his inclusion in the squad a no-brainer.

Sanju Samson (WK)

The most impressive wicketkeeper batter in IPL 2024, Rajasthan Royals’ skipper Sanju Samson has made 314 runs in eight games at an average of 62.80 and a strike rate of 152.42 in the ongoing season. He hasn’t shown his best for India in T20Is but is capable of wreaking havoc with the bat if given a chance.

Suryakumar Yadav

Having been sidelined for the first few games of IPL 2024 for Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar Yadav has still managed to impress courtesy of 140 runs in five games at a strike rate of 166.66. The world’s No.1 T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav has made more than 2000 T20I runs, including four centuries and 17 fifties at an average of 45.55 and strike rate of 171.55.

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya hasn’t enjoyed his return to Mumbai Indians as skipper in IPL 2024 having struggled with both bat and ball. He’s managed 151 runs as well as four wickets in IPL 2024 but is likely to sneak into the squad considering his abundance of experience in T20Is, where he’s scored 1348 runs and taken 73 scalps.

Rishabh Pant (WK)

Having been away from the game for more than a year due to a serious car crash, wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant has made a strong comeback in IPL 2024. He’s scored 254 runs in eight games and has gone at a strike rate of 150.29, making him a worthy contender for India’s squad.

Rinku Singh

A belligerent finisher who doesn’t take much time to get his eye in, Rinku Singh hasn’t spent much time batting in IPL 2024 but still boasts a strike rate of 159.70 in the ongoing season. He’s got two fifties under his belt and has a strike rate of 176.23 and an average of 89 in T20Is, making him a worthwhile member of India’s squad.

Ravindra Jadeja

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja hasn’t had the best of IPL seasons so far but comes with plenty of T20I experience. He’s scored almost 500 runs and has 53 wickets in the format and could sneak into India’s squad with better performances in the remaining IPL games.

Kuldeep Yadav

An in-form player, Kuldeep Yadav has taken 10 wickets and is Delhi Capitals’ leading wicket-taker in IPL 2024. His left-arm wrist spin adds variety to India’s bowling unit and Kuldeep has also proven himself on the international stage having taken 59 wickets in 35 T20Is.

Yuzvendra Chahal

The first bowler to take 200 wickets in the IPL, Yuzvendra Chahal is Rajasthan Royals’ top wicket-taker with 13 scalps and is one of the frontrunners to make India’s squad as a spinner. He has also taken 96 wickets in T20Is, which definitely strengthens his case for selection.

Jasprit Bumrah

A nailed-on certainty, Jasprit Bumrah’s selection is a no-brainer given his bowling pedigree in the format. Top of the Purple Cap leaderboard with 13 wickets to his name, Jasprit Bumrah has 74 wickets at an average of 19.66 and an economy of 6.55.

Arshdeep Singh

Unafraid of taking the ball in pressure situations, Arshdeep Singh has taken 10 wickets for Punjab Kings in IPL 2024 and is likely to be a part of the squad having regularly represented India in the format in the past. He’s taken 62 T20I wickets already and is likely to add to his tally in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Shivam Dube

One of the stars of IPL 2024, Shivam Dube has been in fine form for Chennai Super Kings having scored 311 runs in eight matches at an average of 51.83 and a strike rate of 169.94. An explosive finisher, Dube should be one of the first names in the squad if IPL 2024 form was the sole criteria for selection.

The OTHER Probables, who have done well

Avesh Khan

Avesh Khan has been decent for Rajasthan Royals having bowled in crunch situations in IPL 2024 while taking eight wickets. He’s taken 19 T20I scalps and has an outside chance of making the squad with a big upturn in form.

Harshal Patel

Punjab Kings’ Harshal Patel has been among the wickets in IPL 2024 and is the team’s leading wicket-getter with 13 scalps. He’s taken 29 T20I wickets for India in the past but will be lucky to make the cut considering his economy rates tend to be on the expensive side.

Riyan Parag

Rajasthan Royals’ Riyan Parag is having an excellent IPL season and he’s the team’s leading run-scorer having scored 318 runs this season. Even though it has been a coming-of-age season for Parag in the IPL, his selection in the squad might be a step too far since he’s yet to make his T20I debut.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Chennai Super Kings’ new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has found form at the right time to boost his chances of selection. After a slow start to the season, Gaikwad has looked in great form and is his team’s top-scorer with 349 runs in eight IPL 2024 games. The fact that he’s made one hundred and three fifties in T20Is also won’t do his chances any harm.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) will host Delhi Capitals (DC) in the ninth match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Thursday, March 28. Led by captain Sanju Samson, the Royals started their IPL 2024 campaign in an emphatic fashion as they defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 20 runs at home on Sunday. With two points on the board, RR are placed second on the IPL 2024 standings.

On the other hand, the Rishabh Pant-led Capitals will look to bounce back after suffering a four-wicket defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Saturday.

Having yet to open their account, DC are currently languishing ninth on the IPL 2024 standings.

Ahead of another enthralling IPL 2024 clash, we look at the predicted XIs of both sides.

RR Predicted XI

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Flamboyant opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal slammed a quick-fire 12-ball 24 against LSG in their opening fixture. Jaiswal will hope to provide another blitzkrieg start against DC on Thursday.

Jos Buttler

Swashbuckling England batter Jos Buttler is once again expected to open the proceedings for the Royals. Buttler, who was dismissed cheaply against LSG, will aim to score big and provide a perfect start for the inaugural IPL champions.

Sanju Samson (captain/wicketkeeper)

RR captain Sanju Samson played a match-winning knock in their IPL 2024 opener. Batting at number three, Sanju scored an unbeaten 82 off just 52 balls to power RR to 193/4 in their 20 overs. His knock was laced with three fours and six maximums. He will look to continue his scintillating form against DC.

Riyan Parag

Young Riyan Parag was another standout batter for the Royals against LSG. Parag stitched an impressive 93-run stand with skipper Samson for the third wicket. The dashing right-handed batter scored 43 off 29 balls, including one four and three sixes.

Shimron Hetmyer

West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer will retain his place in the Royals’ playing XI despite failing in their opening game. The 27-year-old amassed 300 runs in 14 matches last season at a strike rate of 152.28 while also maintaining an average of 37.50.

Dhruv Jurel

Dhruv Jurel impressed for the Royals against LSG in Jaipur. Batting at number six, Jurel smashed 20 runs off just 12 balls to propel RR to a strong total. He will aim to continue his good form against a star-studded DC bowling line-up.

Ravichandran Ashwin

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was a touch expensive against Lucknow Super Giants. While Ashwin bagged the huge wicket of Marcus Stoinis, he conceded 35 runs in his quota of four overs. However, he will play a key role with a few left-handers in DC’s playing XI.

Sandeep Sharma

Experienced right-arm pacer Sandeep Sharma bowled brilliantly in RR’s opening game. The Patiala-born cricketer picked up the massive wicket of LSG skipper KL Rahul as he finished with figures of 3-0-22-1 on Sunday. He will look to add to his tally against DC.

Avesh Khan

India international Avesh Khan was economical for RR in their IPL 2024 opener. The 27-year-old right-arm fast bowler chipped in with some good overs to finish with figures of 3-0-21-0 on Sunday. He will aim to pick some wickets in their upcoming encounter.

Trent Boult

New Zealand’s star pacer Trent Boult has been RR’s bowling spearhead since 2022. The left-arm fast bowler once again provided early breakthroughs for the Royals as he dismissed LSG’s Quinton de Kock and Devdutt Padikkal in his opening two overs.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal has already bagged 188 IPL wickets in just 146 matches. The right-arm leg-spinner once again began the new season on a good note as he bowled an effective spell against LSG. Chahal got the wicket of Deepak Hooda to finish with figures of 3-0-25-1.

DC Predicted XI

David Warner

Australia’s star opening batter David Warner will once again hold the key for DC in the batting department. Warner hammered 29 runs off 21 balls against PBKS in their opening fixture. Interestingly, the southpaw is the all-time leading overseas run-getter, having amassed 6,426 runs in 177 matches.

Mitchell Marsh

For DC, Australia’s T20I captain Mitchell Marsh will open the innings with Warner. In their opening game, Marsh scored a blitzkrieg 12-ball 20 before he fell to Arshdeep Singh. He will look to score big to cement his place in the Capitals’ starting XI.

Shai Hope

West Indies cricketer Shai Hope is expected to retain his place in DC’s starting XI. Batting at number three, Hope scored 33 runs off 25 balls against PBKS. His impressive knock included two fours and as many sixes.

Rishabh Pant (captain/wicketkeeper)

DC captain Rishabh Pant made a quiet comeback to cricket after 453 days. Pant came into bat at number four and scored a 13-ball 18 before he was dismissed by Harshal Patel in the 13th over. In his short stay at the crease, Pant slammed a few scintillating shots. He will look to bat longer against RR on Thursday.

Ricky Bhui

Indian cricketer Ricky Bhui could be given another opportunity after he was dismissed cheaply against PBKS in their IPL 2024 opener. Having faced seven deliveries, Bhui managed just three runs against Punjab in DC’s opening clash. He will be eager to impress if given another chance.

Tristan Stubbs

New recruit Tristan Stubbs was also back in the pavilion for a low score on his DC debut on Saturday. Batting at number six, the South African cricketer could add just five runs off eight balls that he faced. He lost his wicket to PBKS leg-spinner Rahul Chahar. Stubbs will be raring to go against RR in Jaipur.

Axar Patel

Star all-rounder Axar Patel once again contributed with both bat and ball in DC’s opening encounter. Axar came out to bat at No.7 and scored 21 off just 13 balls, laced with two fours and one six to guide his side to a fighting total. He later bowled an economical spell as he finished with figures of 4-0-25-0. Axar will aim to chip in with few scalps against RR.

Sumit Kumar

DC all-rounder Sumit Kumar made his IPL debut against Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. While Sumit failed to impress on his debut, he could be given another opportunity against the Royals.

Kuldeep Yadav

Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav was the wrecker-in-chief for DC in their IPL 2024 opener. The 29-year-old bagged the wickets of Prabhsimran Singh and wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma to finish with brilliant figures of 4-0-20-2. Kuldeep could trouble the RR batters in Jaipur.

Khaleel Ahmed

Khaleel Ahmed was the other standout bowler for DC in their previous game. Khaleel was given the new ball and he later ended his spell with important scalps. Despite being a touch expensive, the left-arm pacer removed Sam Curran and Shashank Singh to keep DC in the game. He will look to provide early breakthroughs against RR.

Mukesh Kumar

India international Mukesh Kumar is expected to replace injured Ishant Sharma in DC’s starting XI on Thursday. The right-arm pacer scalped seven wickets in 10 matches last season for the Capitals. Despite his high economy, Mukesh has a knack for picking wickets.
