Wholesale price-based inflation rose to 9.92% in August, compared to 9.78% in July, on rising prices of food, manufactured items, and fuel and power, government data showed on Monday.

Inflation in the food index rose to 7.05% in August, from 6.65% in July.

In manufactured items, WPI inflation was at a series high of 8.37%, higher than 8.29% in July.

In the fuel and power basket, wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation was 22.93%.

“Across groups, mineral oils [containing petroleum products], food articles, manufacture of food products, manufacture of basic metals, non-food articles, and manufacture of chemicals and chemical products have been major drivers of WPI inflation in August 2026,” the Commerce and Industry Ministry said while releasing the WPI data.

The WPI has been on an upward trajectory since the beginning of this fiscal year as the West Asia war and the resultant blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which the majority of crude oil is imported into India, pushed up global crude and fertiliser costs with a spillover effect on food prices.

The Reserve Bank’s monetary policy committee, last month, kept benchmark policy rates unchanged at 5.25% and projected retail inflation at 5% for FY27, citing deficient and uneven South-West monsoon amidst El Nino conditions.

Wholesale price inflation shot up to 9.68% in May, from 8.26% in April, led by a sharp spike in prices of fuel and power, manufactured and food items.

The Commerce and Industry Ministry on Monday (June 15, 2026) released the Wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation data revising the base year to 2022-23, from 2011-12 earlier.

Wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation in fuel and power jumped to 30.33% in May as against 24.89% in April. In crude petroleum, inflation was 61.51% in May, as against 56.31% in the previous month.

The sharp rise in WPI inflation reflects the impact of the West Asia crisis and the effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz through which the majority of the crude oil is imported to India, and its spillover effect on food prices.

Inflation in food articles was 3.60% in May, compared to 2.43% in April. In manufactured products, inflation rose to 7.48% in May, from 6.68% during April, data showed.

Retail or consumer price index based inflation too had surged to a 16-month high of 3.93% in May, as against 3.48% in the previous month.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which mainly factors in CPI when arriving at its monetary policy, has been mandated by the government to ensure that headline inflation remains at 4%, with a 2% margin on either side.

Earlier this month, the RBI raised its inflation projection for the current fiscal year to 5.1% from 4.6%, largely due to mounting input costs, driven by the pass-through of higher global energy prices to retail petrol and diesel prices.

Rising global crude oil prices had led to ₹7.50 a litre increase in petrol and diesel prices in the second half of May.

Wholesale price inflation (WPI) fell to (-) 1 .21% in October, driven by a decline in prices of food articles like pulses and vegetables, as well as lower fuel and manufactured items’ prices, government data showed on Friday (November 14, 2025).

WPI-based inflation was 0.13% in September and 2.75% in October last year.

“The negative rate of inflation in October 2025, is primarily due to decrease in prices of food articles, crude petroleum and natural gas, electricity, mineral oils and manufacture of basic metals etc ,” the Industry Ministry said in a statement.

According to WPI data, deflation in food articles was 8.31% in October, compared to 5.22% in September, with onion, potato, vegetables and pulses seeing a decline in prices.

In vegetables, deflation was 34.97% in October, against 24.41% in September. In pulses, deflation was at 16.50% in October, while in potato and onion it was 39.88% and 65.43%t, respectively.

In the case of manufactured products, inflation eased to 1.54%, from 2.33% in September.

Fuel and power witnessed a negative inflation or deflation of 2.55%, against 2.58% in September.

The fall in WPI inflation is on expected lines after the rates of Goods and Services Tax (GST) were slashed effective September 22.

GST rates on daily use mass consumption items were cut as part of the tax rate rationalisation under which the four-tier tax structure was brought down to just 2 slabs of 5 and 18%.

The tax cuts which lowered prices of goods, plus a favourable inflation base of last year, has pulled down both wholesale and retail inflation.

Data released last week showed, retail inflation was at an all-time low of 0.25% in October, driven down by GST rate cuts and a high base of last year. In September retail or consumer price index inflation was 1.44%.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which takes into account retail inflation, had kept benchmark policy rates unchanged at 5.5% last month.

The decline in both retail and WPI inflation would put pressure on the RBI to cut benchmark interest rates in the next monetary policy review meeting scheduled on December 3-5.

Q1 results, global trends to influence trading activity in markets in holiday-shortened week: Analysts https://artifex.news/article68400316-ece/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 13:38:43 +0000 https://artifex.news/article68400316-ece/ Read More “Q1 results, global trends to influence trading activity in markets in holiday-shortened week: Analysts” »

Quarterly earnings from several blue-chip firms, including Infosys and Reliance Industries, global trends, and trading activity of foreign investors, would act as major driving factors for equity markets’ movement in a holiday-shortened week ahead, analysts said.

The domestic WPI inflation data for June — scheduled to be announced on Monday — will also influence trading sentiments, traders said.

Markets will remain closed on Wednesday for Muharram.

Among major quarterly earnings to be tracked this week are from HDFC Life Insurance Company, Bajaj Auto, BPCL, JSW Steel, Asian Paints, Infosys, and Reliance Industries. “Q1 earnings will be a key focus this week as numerous companies, including heavyweights Infosys, and Reliance, are set to release their results. Additionally, pre-Budget discussions are expected to contribute to market volatility,” Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd, said.

On the global front, a significant focus will be on China. The country is scheduled to announce its GDP and Industrial Production (IIP) numbers, Mr. Meena said. “Other global factors to watch include the speech by the US Federal Reserve Chairman, US retail sales figures, and macroeconomic data from Japan,” he added.

Meanwhile, IT services company HCL Tech on July 12 posted a 20.4% rise in consolidated net profit to ₹4,257 crore for the June-ended quarter and gave a revenue growth guidance of 3-5% for FY25 on GenAI diversification and strong operational execution.

“On Monday, markets will react to India’s inflation data. Key results this week include Jio Financial Services, HDFC Life, Asian Paints, LTIMindtree, Infosys, Wipro, JSW Steel, Paytm, etc. Also globally, investors will take cues from China’s GDP numbers, US core retail sales data, and ECB (European Central Bank) interest rate decision,” Siddhartha Khemka, Head, Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said.

Retail inflation increased to four-month high of 5.08% in June as food items, including vegetables, became dearer, according to government data released on July 12.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said, “We expect stock-specific moves to gain traction due to the ongoing earnings season; indeed, IT will be in the limelight due to the good start to the earnings and outlook.” In the week ahead, economic data like China GDP, EuroZone CPI inflation, ECB policy, and the US Fed chair speech will be watched by investors to get cues on market momentum, he added.

On a weekly basis, the BSE benchmark jumped 522.74 points, or 0.65%, while the Nifty climbed 178.3 points, or 0.73%. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 622 points, or 0.78 per cent, to settle at a record closing level of 80,519.34 on Friday. During the day, it zoomed 996.17 points, or 1.24%, to hit an all-time high of 80,893.51.

The NSE Nifty surged 186.20 points, or 0.77%, to settle at a record closing high of 24,502.15. Intra-day, it jumped 276.25 points, or 1.13%, to hit a new lifetime peak of 24,592.20.

The wholesale price based inflation remained in the negative territory for the fourth straight month in July at (-)1.36% on easing prices of fuel, even though food articles turned costlier.

The wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation rate has been in the negative since April and was (-)4.12% in June. In July last year it was 14.07%.

Inflation in food articles skyrocketed 14.2% in July against 1.32% in June.

“Decline in the rate of inflation in July, 2023 is primarily contributed by fall in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, chemical & chemical products, textiles and food products,” the commerce and industry ministry said on August 14.

Fuel and power basket inflation eased to (-)12.79% in July from (-)12.63% in June.

In manufactured products, the inflation rate was (-)2.51% as against (-)2.71% in June.

The RBI last week kept interest rates unchanged at 6.5% for the third straight meeting but signalled tighter policy if food prices drive inflation higher.

“The job on inflation is still not done,” RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had said.

“Inflationary risks persist amidst volatile international food and energy prices, lingering geopolitical tensions and weather-related uncertainties.”

The RBI raised its inflation forecast for the current financial year ending March 2024 to 5.4% from 5.1% earlier, citing pressures from food prices.

The Central bank takes into account retail or consumer price index based inflation for formulating monetary policy. Retail inflation data for July is scheduled to be released later in the day.
