She was the cynosure of all eyes on Sunday having played a massive role in RCB’s WPL triumph but Tuesday night gave ‘Purple Cap’ winner Shreyanka Patil a chance to enjoy a rare ‘Fan Girl’ moment with none other than Virat Kohli. The 21-year-old off-spinner, who had been a revelation in both eliminator and final with her match-winning performances at the death, couldn’t stop gushing on social media when she realised that her childhood idol actually knew her name.

“Started watching cricket cos of him. Grew up dreaming to be like him. And last night, had the moment of my life,” she wrote on ‘X’, posting her picture alongside Kohli from the RCB ‘Unbox’ event.

“Virat said, ‘Hi Shreyanka, well bowled.’ He actually knows my name,” the surreal feeling was yet to sink and it was understandable from her post.

Shreyanka was picked up by RCB during inaugural WPL auctions last year at base price of Rs 10 lakh and she finished with six wickets in seven matches, the most for her team.

In September, the 21-year-old offie played in the CPL for Guyana Amazon Warriors, where she finished with the most wickets (9) in the tournament.

The performances were noticed by the Indian selectors, who called her up for the home T20 series against England in December last year and she made her national team debut on December 6.

Since then there has been no looking back for the youngsters, who battled many a injuries, to stake her claim in the national team with her performances.

Shreyanka has so far represented India in two ODIs and six T20Is, picking up four and and eight wickets respectively.

As a franchise, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 was a special one for Royal Challengers Bangalore. As a franchise, the RCB is yet to win the Indian Premier League. However, it’s women’s team made history by wining the Women’s Premier League 2024 under the leadership of Smriti Mandhana. The win will undoubtedly boost the confidence of the men’s team as well. After RCB defeated Delhi Capitals in the final, Virat Kohli could be seen celebrating the win over a video call.

Vrat Kohli has been ever present in the RCB ranks since the IPL started in 2008. His happiness was evident. On Tuesday, he and other RCB men’s team members could be seeing giving ‘Guard of Honour’ to their women’s counterparts at the RCB Unbox event.

RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana feels it’s not right for people to undermine Virat Kohli’s achievements for the Bengaluru franchise in the wake of her side’s Women’s Premier League title triumph recently.

The Mandhana-led RCB defeated Delhi Capitals to lift the WPL trophy in only their second year, while their male counterparts, led by the charismatic Kohli for nearly a decade before he stepped down, haven’t had success in the 16 years of IPL.

“The title is one thing, but what he (Kohli) has achieved for India is remarkable. So, I don’t think that comparison is right in terms of where my career is and what he has already achieved,” Mandhana told the media on Tuesday.

“The reason why I do not like the comparison is that what he has achieved is great; he has been an inspirational person. A title does not define a lot of things; we all respect him and I feel like the respect has to be right up there for Virat. So, there is nothing different from me as well,” said the India vice-captain.

Both Mandhana and Kohli wear No. 18 jerseys and the left-handed batter said drawing comparison between the two based on that was unwarranted.

“I would not term it as an 18 comparison. The jersey number is just a personal choice; my birth date is 18th and I have 18 on my back… it does not define how he plays or (how) I play my cricket. He’s been an inspiration to us in a lot of aspects, so I would not say title should define anything,” she added.

Mandhana felt that the men’s counterparts had always played good competitive cricket but an IPL title had eluded them.

“I think, to be fair, the men’s team has also played good cricket in the last 16 years; it is not like they have not played well. I don’t think the comparison is right. RCB is a franchise; let’s treat the men’s and women’s teams separately because we don’t want to be compared.

“They are good at what they do. We are good at what we do,” she added.

As the Royal Challengers Bangalore men’s team remains trophy-less in 16 years of the Indian Premier League, the franchise’s women’s team tasted success in only the second season of the Women’s Premier League. The Smriti Mandhana-led side defeated Delhi Capitals in the final on Sunday to clinch the elusive title. Fans understandably were ecstatic to see the franchise getting their hands on a piece of silverware. RCB’s New Zealand star Sophie Devine, however, was additionally happy as the girls managed to get the title before the boys.

In a chat after the final in New Delhi, Devine said: “Glad to win the trophy before the boys (laughs)”.

An all-round effort from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) led by yet another solid knock by Ellyse Perry and brilliant bowling spells from spinners Shreyanka Patil and Sophie Molineux captured their first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) title.

Legendary Indian batter and former skipper of RCB men’s side Virat Kohli congratulated the team through a video call. In an Instagram story, he also hailed the ‘Superwomen’ of RCB.

Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Chris Gayle and Yuzvendra Chahal were some of the other cricketers to greet RCB on the historic victory.

When it comes to the match, the Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Shafali Varma (44 in 27 balls, with two fours and three sixes) and skipper Meg Lanning (23 in 23 balls, with three fours) started off really well for the team with a quickfire 64-run opening stand.

However, Shreyanka Patil (4/12), Sophie Molineux (3/20) and Asha Sobhana (2/14) helped RCB bounce back just after the powerplay and removed Delhi batters one-by-one, triggering an unfathomable batting collapse. DC was all out for 113 in 18.3 overs.

In the chase of 114, RCB put on a 49-run opening stand, powered by Sophie Devine (32 in 27 balls, with five fours and a six). However, RCB was tested by Delhi bowlers in middle overs and skipper Smriti Mandhana (31 in 39 balls, with three fours) departed at a crucial juncture to leave RCB at 82/2 in 15 overs. However, Ellyse Perry (35* in 37 balls, with four boundaries) and Richa Ghosh (17* in 14 balls, with two fours) finished the chase with three balls left.

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana was ecstatic following her side’s maiden Women’s Premier League (WPL) title win on Sunday. RCB defeated Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to claim the WPL 2024 title and this was the first time that a RCB side (men’s or women’s) won a trophy. Following the victory, presenter and former Indian women’s cricket team skipper Anjum Chopra told Mandhana that she has finally won the trophy for RCB but the left-hander batter’s response won hearts. Mandhana quickly replied that that it was the team and not only her who has won the all important trophy.

“Feeling hasn’t still sunk in. Hard for me to come out with expressions. One thing I’ll say is I’m proud of the bunch. Our Bangalore leg was really good. We came to Delhi and had two tough losses,” she said.

“That’s what we spoke about that we need to step up at the right time. These tournaments are about peaking at the right time. Last year taught us a lot of things. What went wrong, what went right. Management just said this is your team, build it (your way). Thumbs up to them.”

“For RCB, it’s a lot more. I’m not the only one who won the trophy, the team has won the trophy. I’m not the person to talk about what I feel. This is in top five maybe. Obviously a World Cup would top it. Have a message for the fans – the most loyal fanbase.”

“One statement that always comes up is Ee Sala Cup Namde. Now it’s Ee Sala Cup Namdu. Kannada is not my first language but it was important to say it for the fans,” she concluded.

RCB’s spin attack weaved magic in the first innings to nullify DC’s explosive start. Sophie Molineux spearheaded the attack but the 21-year-old off-spinner Shreyanka Patil turned out to be the game-changer for RCB.

She picked up a four-wicket haul and removed the tail end within a blink of an eye to restrict DC to a sub-par total of 113. In reply, RCB comfortably chased down the target with three balls to spare and with eight wickets in hand.

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana said she got solid backing from the management after their failure to win the Women’s Premier League last year, which went a long way in them lifting the title on Sunday. She said the 2023 campaign “taught us a lot of things” as her team beat Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to land the title here. With this, RCB’s spirited bunch has managed to achieve what their men’s team could not do over 16 years, and Mandhana thanked their loyal fanbase for always supporting the side. “Last year taught us a lot of things, as a player, as a captain and as a team. The management, the way they backed me during the review after the season…they have been through a lot and a big thumbs up (to them),” Mandhana said at the presentation.

On the title triumph, she said, “The feeling has not sunk in yet, maybe it will take time. Hard for me to come out with a lot of expressions. Only thing I want to say is I am proud of the bunch.

“We have been through ups and downs but they have stuck at it, and the way we have gotten past the line (tonight), it was amazing. Our Bangalore leg was really good. We had two tough losses (in Delhi). That is what we talked about.

“The last league match was like a quarter, then the semi and then the final. In such tournaments, you have to peak at the right time.” The spin pair of Shreyanka Patil (4/12) and Sophie Molineux (3/20) helped RCB bowl out DC for 113, and then, talismanic skipper Mandhana (31), Sophie Devine (32) and Elysse Perry (35 not out) saw them home with three balls to spare.

The Royal Challengers made 115 for two in 19.3 overs, a far easier victory than that tight-looking final over finish.

Mandhana added, “For them (management) to have this trophy, it is amazing for them. I am not the only one who has won the trophy, the team has won. For RCB as a franchise to win, it is really, really special.

“This win is definitely one of the top five maybe. A World Cup (win) would top it. I have a message for all the RCB fans, the most loyal fan base. Nothing would have been possible without their support. Ee Sala Cup Namde (The Cup will be ours this time) always comes up, and now I just want to say Ee Sala Cup Namdu (The Cup is ours this time).” DC, led by Meg Lanning, will rue the missed chance of bettering their runners-up position from WPL 2023, but she admitted that her team was outplayed on the day.

Lanning said, “Disappointing to not get it done tonight. We played some good cricket through the tournament. But it was about not playing well on the day. Congratulations to RCB, they outplayed us. But we can be proud of our efforts throughout.” On their batting collapse, she said, “It all happened relatively quickly, as it tends to do. Crazy things happen, and every game has been pretty close. You can never sort of rest and think it is under control because there are so many good teams.

“They (RCB) deserved the win.”

Royal Challengers Bangalore, as a franchise, ended its excruciating wait to taste success in franchise cricket as the Smriti Mandhana-led team clinched the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 title, beating the Delhi Capitals in the final on Sunday. RCB’s title triumph sent a jubilant wave all across the city, with fans taking to the streets to celebrate the historic victory. “RCB, RCB” chants could be heard across the city as the franchise finally managed to add a trophy to its cabinet.

Since the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, RCB had never gone on to win the title. But, in only their second WPL campaign, the women’s team of the franchise lifted the elusive trophy.

After clinching a maiden WPL title RCB off-spinner Shreyanka Patil dedicated the win to the fans.

An all-round Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) led by yet another solid knock by Ellyse Perry and brilliant bowling spells from spinners Shreyanka Patil and Sophie Molineux captured their first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) title after defeating Delhi Capitals by eight wickets in the title clash at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday.

Shreyanka secured the Purple Cap for most wickets by a player in the tournament after her exploits. She has 13 wickets in eight games at an average of 12.07, with the best bowling figures of 4/12. The youngster won the Emerging Player of the Season as well for her brilliant performance throughout the tournament.

The 21-year-old asserted that our team really worked hard for the title this season. She further spoke about the team bonding activities.

“You can call us like that, we don’t mind. We did really work hard, we did have a camp before we played the season. It was amazing to get in touch with everyone and we had amazing team bonding sessions, some drama, some dance and some laughter. They keep saying “Ee Sala Cup Namde” and we got it. That’s it guys, it is for the fans,” Shreyanka said after clinching the maiden WPL title.

Shreyanka further stated that our team wanted to win the final as the team wanted to show the fans that we can do it as well.

“Day in and day out we put in our hard work and we manifested, we wanted to win this game and show the fans we can do it. We felt like family, we did not know Luke much, last game we won against Mumbai, he had tears, and we are looking forward to continuing this. We are not going to leave them, they have to dance,” the off-spinner added.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore finally tasted success in franchise cricket as the Smriti Mandhana-led women’s team went on to win the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 title on Sunday. RCB’s victory against the Delhi Capitals saw Mandhana’s women’s team register its name in the history books while the men’s team continues to be without a title in 16 years of its IPL participation. As fans took to social media to congratulate RCB on the win, Rajasthan Royals shared a meme that set the internet ablaze.

In their post, Rajasthan Royals drew parallels between the RCB women’s team’s title triumph and that of a scene from the famous comedy TV show, “Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma“. With the post, the Royals seem to have taken a subtle dig at RCB’s men’s side.

Rajasthan weren’t the only ones to see the funny side of RCB’s women’s team lifting the title before the men’s. Several other social media users tried to troll the the Bengaluru franchise on the same subject.

As for the match, an all-round performance which was led by a solid knock by Ellyse Perry and brilliant bowling spells from spinners Shreyanka Patil and Sophie Molineux powered RCB to their first-ever WPL with an eight-wicket triumph in the title clash at Arun Jaitley Stadium.

The tournament saw India’s young and talented players shine in moments when their respective teams needed them the most. Arundhati Reddy, Minnu Mani, Shubha Satheesh and Vrinda Dinesh are some of the examples of the local talent that was unearthed during the electrifying tournament.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah, former India cricketers Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar were some of the celebrity names to congratulate RCB on their success. Virat Kohli, a part of RCB’s men’s team, had a video call with Smriti Mandhana and others after the team’s success.

Royal Challengers Bangalore clinched their long overdue trophy, winning the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 title. While the men’s team still hasn’t won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title, the women’s team went all the way in only the second season of the Women’s Premier League. As Smriti Mandhana’s side clinched the title, beating the Delhi Capitals in the final on Sunday, Vijay Mallya, former owner of the franchise’s men’s team, took to social media to congratulate the team.

“Heartiest congratulations to the RCB Women’s Team for winning the WPL. It would be a fantastic double if the RCB Men’s Team won the IPL which is long overdue. Good Luck,” the businessman posted on X (formerly Twitter).

After the final, RCB women’s team captain Smriti Mandhana said she got solid backing from the management after their failure to win the Women’s Premier League last year, which went a long way in them lifting the title here on Sunday. Following her side’s maiden Women’s Premier League (WPL) title win, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Smriti Mandhana said a poor performance in the inaugural season taught her and the team a lot, as she thanked the team management and fans for continuously backing and supporting her. This win comes after a second-last-place finish in the inaugural edition, in which they won just two matches out of eight.

After the title win, Smriti said that the feeling of winning the title has not sunk in yet and she cannot find the right way to express it.

“The feeling has not sunk in yet, maybe it will take time. Hard for me to come out with a lot of expression. Only thing I want to say is I am proud of the bunch. We have been through ups and downs but they have stuck at it, and the way we have gotten past the line (tonight), it was amazing,” said Smriti.

The skipper said that the team had a fine Bengaluru leg but faced two tough losses in Delhi. The important thing however was to peak at the right time, she added.

“The last league match was like a quarter, then the semi and then the final. In such tournaments, you have to peak at the right time. Last year taught us a lot of things, as a player, as a captain and as a team. The management, the way they backed me during the review after the season…they have been through a lot and a big thumbs up (to them). For them to have this trophy, it is amazing for them. I am not the only one who has won the trophy, the team has won. For RCB as a franchise to win, it is really, really special,” said Smriti.

“This win is definitely one of the top five maybe. A World Cup (win) would top it. I have a message for all the RCB fans, the most loyal fan base. Nothing would have been possible without their support. Ee Sala Cup Namde (roughly translating to ‘this year cup will be ours’) always comes up, and now I just want to say Ee Sala Cup Namdu (roughly translating to this year the cup is ours),” concluded Smriti.

Following the title win, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that decades-long dream of RCB fans was fulfilled and expressed hope that the men’s RCB team will lift the Indian Premier League title.

“n today’s #TATAWPL final match, RCB beat Delhi team to clinch the championship. The performance of our girls is commendable as they put up a concerted performance throughout the tournament. Being a cricket lover, I am very happy with this win. A decades-long dream of RCB fans has come true today. My wish is that our boys will win the cup in IPL as well. This time the cup is down …… @RCBTweets #PlayBold #RCBvDC #TATAWPLFinal,” tweeted the CM.

DC won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Shafali Varma (44 in 27 balls, with two fours and three sixes) and skipper Meg Lanning (23 in 23 balls, with three fours) started off really well for the team with a quickfire 64-run opening stand.

In the chase of 114, RCB put on a 49-run opening stand, powered by Sophie Devine (32 in 27 balls, with five fours and a six). Over the last few years, the Ee Sala Cup Namde (The Cup is ours this time) slogan of Royal Challengers Bangalore has remained the pet troll of social media army. But not anymore after this Sunday! The RCB have finally managed to bring one trophy home, when they defeated Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) final by eight wickets here at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. RCB off-spinner Shreyanka Patil, who ended up as the highest wicket-taker in WPL with 13 scalps, shared that sentiment and relief after the triumph.
