New Delhi:

A 28-year-old Delhi woman strangled her newborn daughter to death while breastfeeding her because she was upset over the social stigma of the births of four girl children, police have said. The newborn’s body has been recovered and a case of murder registered against the woman.

According to a police statement, Khyala police station in West Delhi received a call early on Friday morning. The caller said that a six-day old girl is missing. Police rushed to the spot and spoke to the mother. She told the cops that she was discharged from the hospital Thursday and went to the parents’ home. She said she was breastfed the newborn late at night and dozed off. When she woke up, the baby was not beside her.

Police started checking CCTV cameras in the neighbourhood to find the missing newborn. “While the search was on, Shivani said that they need to go hospital to get the stitches removed. It seemed a bit odd, but considering the medical condition, the police did not stop them,” the statement said.

During the search, police found a bag on the roof of an adjoining house. The newborn was inside. She was rushed to the hospital, where it was found dead.

Police found the mother’s behaviour suspicious and questioned her. She then broke down and admitted to killing her daughter.

The woman said the newborn was her fourth girl child — two of them had already expired.

“She was facing a lot of social stigma because of that. While feeding the child, she got overawed by these thoughts and smothered/strangulated the child, and then threw it on the adjacent roof. She could not sleep after that, and wasn’t sure what to tell the family members. Hence she told them that the child is missing,” the police have said in their statement.

Police are now waiting for the results of the newborn’s autopsy to verify the mother’s account and confirm the cause of death.

New Delhi:

A 22-year-old woman slit the throat of her nine-day-old infant at her house in Mundka area of outer Delhi because she did not want it, police said on Saturday.

The matter came to fore on Thursday when a man, Govinda, approached the local police station and reported that his wife had slit throat of their daughter.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Jimmy Chiram said a team was sent to the couple’s house in Baba Haridas Colony in Tikri of Mundka.

The team found the infant dead in a room on the second floor with the mother in another room.

“During sustained interrogation, the woman disclosed that she didn’t want to have a girl child that’s why she killed her,” Chiram said in a statement.

The officer said police retrieved the knife used in the crime and booked the woman under section 103(1) of BNS. She was arrested and sent to Judicial custody.

The woman’s husband works as a labourer in a shoe factory in Haryana’s Bahadurgarh, Chiram said. The couple has an about two years old son.

According to police, the husband had come to Delhi in 2019 with his brother and mother who also live with them.

Palghar:

A 23-year-old tribal woman allegedly killed her 4-year-old daughter and then died by suicide following a fight with her husband in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday at Sisne village in Dahanu area.

The woman’s husband, a fisherman, used to be frequently away from the family, an official from Kasa police station said.

He returned home on Sunday and went out with his friends.

His wife was annoyed as he had not taken her with him and this led to a quarrel between them, the official said.

On Monday, the woman allegedly strangled her daughter to death and later hanged herself from the ceiling of her house, he said.

After being alerted by neighbours, police rushed to the spot and initiated a probe into the incident.

The bodies were sent for a post-mortem, the police added.

Napgur, Maharashtra:

A woman allegedly killed her three-year-old daughter after a fight with her husband in Maharashtra’s Nagpur city and walked around for about 4 km with the body before informing the police about the incident, officials said today.

The incident took place on Monday evening in the MIDC police station limits, they said.

The accused, Twinkle Raut, 23, and her husband Rama Laxman Raut, 24, moved to Nagpur four years ago in search of employment.

They worked at a paper products company and resided at a room in the firm’s premises on Hingna Road in the MIDC area, an official said. Their relationship was marked by frequent quarrels stemming from mutual distrust, the police said.

The couple again had a fight at around 4 pm on Monday, the official from MIDC police station said.

Amid the heated exchange, their daughter began crying. In a fit of rage, the woman took the daughter out of the house. She allegedly throttled the child to death under a tree, the official said.

She later walked with the body for almost four kilometres. At around 8 pm, she spotted a police patrolling vehicle and informed the security personnel about the incident, he said.

The police took the child to a hospital where doctors declared her dead, the official said.

The MIDC police subsequently arrested the woman and charged her under Indian Penal Code section 302 (murder), he said.

The woman was later produced in a court which remanded her to police custody till May 24, the official added.
