Former England captain Paul Collingwood believes the Jos Buttler-led side will play four spinners against India in the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup in Guyana on Thursday. The veteran cricketer said Adil Rashid is a “golden nugget” for England and will pose a challenge against Indian batters on a spin-friendly pitch at Providence Stadium amid the prediction of rain in the encounter. “He is a golden nugget for the England cricket team. He comes on naturally in the sixth over, I think the one thing about Rashid is, that his wrong’uns seem to be so difficult to pick. And he’s got real good deception. Now in T20 cricket, deception is key. Whether it’s slower balls or being able to turn the ball both ways. And he is looking really comfortable at the moment.”

“Indian batsmen generally play spin very well, but I think Adil Rashid, the way that he is bowling at the moment, we just have to wait and see what the conditions are like. There’s a chance that England could actually go with four spinners themselves,” Collingwood said during the Star Sports Press Room.

“Obviously, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone, who is actually an all-rounder who can bowl leg-spin and off-spin. And you never know, if the wickets are so dry, you can go with Will Jacks as well. So, plenty of options, but I think Adil Rashid is on top of his game, and this is the beauty of the World Cup. You’re gonna have a leg spinner now at the top of his game, confident, up against some of the best batters in the world. And that’s why it’s gonna be such a good spectacle, and we’re all down to see it,” he added.

On the other hand, former Australia spinner Brad Hogg said India would not bring Yuzvendra Chahal in the playing 11 and will stick to Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav in the spin department.

“It’s a day game, so the wicket might be a little bit dry. But this is the good thing about the Indian squad—they’ve got depth in spin. They knew that when they got to the West Indies, they were going to play more spin than pace. But they’ve still got Siraj there that they can bring in, and they’ve got Hardik Pandya, so they’ve got more pace options if they want up their sleeve. Will they bring in Chahal? I wouldn’t bring in Chahal right now. I’d stick with Jadeja. You’ve got to stick with the playing XI that you’re going with,” Hogg said.

He added that Kuldeep and Axar will be crucial against left-handers while Jadeja would be a better option than Chahal if it’s not turning.

“I love the thought of the question, though. Chahal against England would be okay. But there are a couple of left-handers in the batting lineup for England as well, which could do a little bit of damage. Kuldeep Yadav has been bowling exceptionally well, and Axar Patel has been going well. Jadeja hasn’t been that flash, but he gives you so much in the field, as well as with the bat. And he’s a player that, in the right conditions, he can also lift with the ball. If it’s not turning and if it suits pace, I reckon Jadeja is a better option than Chahal as well. So, I’d stick with Jadeja,” Hogg added.

The IPL 2024 playoffs will not have any England cricketer competing who are part of the T20 World Cup 2024 squad as they were called back by the England Cricket Board (ECB) for a training camp ahead of the competition. As a result, the likes of Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals), Phil Salt (Kolkata Knight Riders) and Will Jacks (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) will not be a part of the competition anymore despite the fact that all of their teams are in the race for the playoffs. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan took to social media to express his feeling regarding the development and he delivered a brutal message for the departing players. “Either be available for full season or don’t come!” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals slumped to a 5-wicket loss against Punjab Kings with Sam Curran producing a brilliant all-round performance.

RR captain Sanju Samson opened up about the loss.

“We needed a few more runs. I think we were 10-15 runs short. It was a 160 kind of a wicket. We would have easily got more than 160 (had we played better), that’s where we lost the game. Would have been nice to have one more bowling option. I am getting used to five quality bowlers. We have to sit back and accept that we are going through failures, have lost four games on the trot.”

“Got to find out what’s not working out for us as a team. Somebody needs to step up, we have so many match-winners in the team. This is the time we need to show character. We need to score more runs. We thought 160-170 would have been a good score. We are not used to playing on such wickets this season where 200-plus totals are getting scored easily. We had to play smart cricket and build those partnerships today. Hopefully the result goes in our way (in the upcoming games),” Samson said after the match.

Punjab Kings’ all-rounder Liam Livingstone on Monday returned to England from the ongoing IPL to undergo a knee recuperation ahead of the next month’s T20 World Cup. Along with Livingstone, Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals), Will Jacks and Reece Topley (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) also have left the IPL to join England squad ahead of the T20I series against Pakistan, beginning on May 22. The Kings are already eliminated from this IPL after managing just four wins from 12 matches and they are currently at the bottom of the table with eight points.

“IPL done for another year, had to get my knee sorted for the upcoming World Cup,” Livingstone wrote on his Instagram wall.

“Thanks once again to the Punjab Kings fans for all their love and support. Disappointing season as a team and personally, but as always, I loved every minute of playing in the IPL,” he added.

Hence, Livingstone will not be available for PBKS’ last two matches of the tournament against Rajasthan Royals (May 15) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (May 19).

The injury is not of serious nature but the England management, as per ESPNcricinfo, decided to give him more time to get it treated prior to their home T20I series against Pakistan.

After that series, the defending champions will travel to the West Indies for their T20 World Cup engagements, starting on June 4 against Scotland in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Livingstone had a lean IPL this season, scoring 111 runs from seven matches and took just three wickets.

Meanwhile, other England players in the IPL who are part of their World Cup squad – Moeen Ali (CSK), Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow (PBKS) and Phil Salt (KKR) – will be home-bound very soon.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru kept their playoff dreams intact through Rajat Patidar’s blazing fifty and a strong-willed effort from the bowlers, who set up the hosts’ 47-run victory over Delhi Capitals in the IPL on Sunday. The target of 188 was not insurmountable, but the Capitals’ chase descended into disarray once they lost four wickets inside 3.3 overs upfront, eventually finishing at 140, with Axar Patel 57 (39b, 5×4, 3×6) playing a lone hand. RCB now have 12 points from 13 matches – same as the Capitals – and need a win against Chennai Super Kings in the last league match here on May 18 to push their case for a playoff berth.

The Capitals also need a win in their final league game against Lucknow Super Giants on May 14 to stay in the hunt.

Cutting back to the match, Impact Player David Warner, who missed the action for close to a month due to a wrist injury, slog-swept left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh into the waiting hands of Will Jacks at deep.

The dismissal flagged off Capitals’ train of disaster. Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal (3/20) consumed Abhishek Porel, caught at covers by Lockie Ferguson, in the first ball of the third over.

Delhi suffered a body blow in the very next ball. The in-form Jack-Fraser McGurk, who smashed Mohammed Siraj for two fours and a six in the second over, backed up too far as Shai Hope’s straight drive rattled the stumps after taking a deflection of Dayal’s outstretched left-hand.

Siraj trapped Kumar Kushagra, who came in for the suspended Rishabh Pant, plumb in front with a nip-backer as DC slumped to 30 for four.

Axar and Hope (29, 23b) added 56 runs for the fifth wicket off 36 balls but the partnership offered only temporary relief than any real hope to the visitors.

Axar, who took over the reins of DC in the absence of Pant, played a handy innings, but it just delayed the inevitable.

The rest of the DC batters were bogged down by a confused mind, best exemplified by the run out of Tristan Stubbs.

Stubbs sprinted out of the non-striker’s crease as if chased by a lion after Axar defended a length ball from Cameron Green, who quickly grabbed the ball and completed the simple task of hitting the stumps.

Earlier, RCB could not exploit Patidar’s quick fifty to the optimum, settling for an underwhelming 187 for nine.

Patidar (52, 32b, 3×4, 3×6) and Jacks (41, 29b, 3×4, 2×6) added 88 runs off 53 balls for the third-wicket as RCB overcame the early departures of skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli.

Du Plessis’ slice off pacer Mukesh Kumar was gobbled up by McGurk near third man.

Kohli gave signals of another T20 masterclass while creaming 27 off 13 balls, including two sixes off Ishant Sharma and one off Khaleel Ahmed (2/31).

But a waft outside the off-stump with little foot movement resulted in a catch to stumper Abhishek Porel.

RCB, however, found Patidar in full flow. His first scoring shot was a magnificent cover driven four off Mukesh and he never let that early momentum fade.

The elegance soon gave way for brute force as Patidar brought forth his six-hitting abilities, smashing Axar for two sixes and sending Kuldeep Yadav over long-on for a maximum.

The DC fielders too helped Patidar copiously. Hope dropped the right-hander on 42 off Kuldeep and five runs later Axar grassed him off pacer Rasikh Salam.

At the other end, Jacks, who was given a reprieve on 19 by Axar off Kuldeep, displayed his untrammelled power and the left-arm wrist spinner was at the receiving end, watching the ball sailing over long-on twice.

Just as the alliance was blossoming, DC managed to latch on to a catch.

Axar atoned for his previous failures as he made a fine tumbling catch off Salam to terminate the stay of Patidar.

Jacks soon followed his partner as a weak slap off Kuldeep ended in the hands of Axar at the edge of the ring.

The dismissals of two set batters affected the run-scoring rate of RCB. From 137 for four in 14.4 overs they could only add 50 runs in the remaining overs.

All eyes will be on Virat Kohli as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in a do or die match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday. Both teams had also met last weekend with Kohli’s RCB beating Shubman Gill‘s GT in a one-sided encounter in Ahmedabad. Kohli, who has been under the scanner for his strike-rate, hit an unbeaten 70 off 44 balls, but it was Will Jacks who stole the show with his unbeaten 100 off just 41 balls. Jacks had scored his first 50 in 31 balls, but took just 10 balls to breach triple figures.

Ahead of their return leg against GT, Kohli and some of the RCB players attended an event. However, a video of Kohli dancing while entering the room has taken the internet by storm.

In the viral video, Kohli was seen dancing with RCB skipper Faf du Plessis giving him a shoulder massage.

Kohli has been in red-hot form in the ongoing IPL. He is currently the second highest run-getter in the tournament with 500 runs in 10 matches.

He only trails CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad by nine runs in the Orange Cap list. Kohli’s form in remainder of the tournament will not be crucial for RCB, but also Team India as he has been selected in the 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

BCCI chief selectors Ajit Agarkar recently opened up on the debate surrounding Kohli’s strike-rate.

“We haven’t been discussing Kohli’s strike-rate. There is a difference between IPL and international cricket. You need experience. We have got enough balance and power in the team. You look and try take positives from what is happening in IPL. Pressure of a World Cup game is different,” Ajit Agarkar played down Virat Kohli strike-rate criticism.

There have been a debate whether Kohli should open the batting during the T20 World Cup. Addressing the talks, India captain Rohit neither confirmed or denied the same.

“All the options are open. We haven’t decided yet, there is no guarantee and we will go there to the West Indies and depending on the conditions we will decide the playing XI,” Rohit said during a press conference.

The 52nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 will witness Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) taking on Gujarat Titans (GT) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have managed to win just three out of their 10 games so far, placing them at the bottom of the IPL 2024 standings with six points. Similarly, Gujarat Titans find themselves in the bottom half of the points table, occupying the eighth position. They have accumulated eight points from four wins out of 10 matches.

With both teams in desperate need of a victory, let’s have a look at the predicted XIs for what promises to be an exciting contest.

RCB Predicted XI

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli comes into this tournament fueled by his stunning performance, having scored an unbeaten 70 runs in his last match against Gujarat Titans. Kohli’s innings included six boundaries and three sixes, showcasing a striking rate of 159.09. With a total of 500 runs in just 10 matches, he will be determined to reclaim the Orange Cap on Saturday.

Faf du Plessis (captain)

RCB captain Faf du Plessis will open the innings along with Virat Kohli in the upcoming match against GT. Faf has been in decent form in IPL 2024 with 288 runs in 10 matches including two fifty-plus scores while maintaining an impressive strike rate of 159.12. The former Proteas captain will be eager to put up a big score in the upcoming match.

Will Jacks

In IPL 2024, Will Jacks announced himself with a blazing 41-ball ton against GT. With 176 runs in five matches at an average of 44 and a strike rate of 191.30, the English batter has been outstanding. Jacks has also contributed with the ball, claiming two wickets for RCB. The hard-hitting England cricketer will be eager to showcase his power-hitting skills at home.

Rajat Patidar

Talented batter Rajat Patidar has been an important member of the RCB lineup this season. With a strike rate of 178.53, Patidar has scored 211 runs in 10 matches in IPL 2024. He did not get a chance to bat in the previous match, but Rajat will be eager to put up a fiery performance sooner rather than later.

Glenn Maxwell

With only 32 runs in seven matches, Glenn Maxwell has yet to have a successful outing with the bat in the 2024 edition. However, the Australian all-rounder has been equally successful with the ball in hand taking five wickets in as many matches. If given the chance to bat, Maxwell will be eager to score big and improve his wickets tally in the upcoming match at Chinnaswamy.

Cameron Green

Maxwell’s compatriot Cameron Green will aim to add depth to RCB’s batting as well as bowling department. Green has had a below-par performance with the bat this season but has been impressive with the ball in hand. The Australian all-rounder has taken six wickets in eight matches and will aim to produce an all-round performance against GT.

Dinesh Karthik (wicketkeeper)

The addition of Dinesh Karthik to RCB’s starting lineup will inject crucial firepower into their already lethal batting lineup. In 10 matches, the wicketkeeper-batter has accumulated 262 runs, including two fifty-plus scores, boasting an impressive average of 52.40 and a striking rate of 195.52. Karthik will look to make a significant impact and further bolster his run tally in the upcoming match against Gujarat.

Swapnil Singh

Swapnil Singh has made waves with the ball in hand in IPL 2024. The off-spinner’s ability to outsmart batters with his spin variations has led him to scalp three wickets in two matches. Singh will lead the spin-bowling attack for RCB and aim to improve his wickets tally against GT come Saturday.

Karn Sharma

Karn Sharma will be an important member of the RCB spin-bowling outfit. With an economy rate of 9.54, Sharma has scalped three wickets in four matches. He is likely to play a crucial role in containing GT’s hard-hitting batters and provide breakthroughs during the middle overs.

Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj will spearhead the pace bowling attack for RCB. While the Indian speedster has taken only six wickets in nine matches, he has been slightly expensive, conceding at an economy rate of 9.50. Siraj will hope to provide early breakthroughs with the new ball in the upcoming match.

Yash Dayal

Yash Dayal’s inclusion in RCB’s playing XI adds an element of anticipation and excitement to the team’s bowling lineup. With his versatile skills, Dayal has taken eight wickets in nine matches. Known for his deceptive bowling variations, Dayal is poised to make a significant impact on the game.

GT Predicted XI

Wriddhiman Saha (wicketkeeper)

Wriddhiman Saha, Gujarat’s wicketkeeper-batter, has faced challenges replicating his IPL 2023 performance in the current season. In eight matches, he has accumulated 135 runs at a strike rate of 125. Despite his statistics painting a subdued picture, Saha remains a potential threat to RCB’s bowling unit and will strive to make a significant impact in the upcoming match.

Shubman Gill (captain)

Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill will play an important role in guiding his team to a strong start. In 10 matches, Gill has scored 320 runs including two fifty-plus scores at a strike rate of 140.97. The Indian opening batter had a short time at the crease in the last match and will be eager to perform better at the Chinnaswamy.

Sai Sudarshan

Sai Sudarshan has played a pivotal role in GT’s batting lineup in IPL 2024. The southpaw has amassed 418 runs in 10 matches and currently ranks as the third-highest run-scorer this season. His unbeaten 84-run innings against RCB in the last match showcased his prowess and will aim to repeat such a performance in the upcoming contest against the same opponents.

Shahrukh Khan

Shahrukh Khan returned to form in the last game, notching 58 runs off just 30 deliveries. Despite featuring in five matches, the Indian all-rounder has only managed 88 runs and is yet to make an impact with the ball. Nonetheless, his impressive strike rate of 183.33 suggests that Shahrukh could deliver a powerful innings against RCB.

David Miller

David Miller has been an integral member of Gujarat Titans’ batting lineup. In IPL 2024, Miller has accumulated 164 runs in seven matches, boasting a strike rate of 151.85. Renowned for his powerful strokes and timely contributions, the South African batter can take charge and stabilize the innings for GT in crucial moments.

Azmatullah Omarzai

Azmatullah Omarzai will add stability to Gujarat’s batting and bowling departments. Though he hasn’t had an impact with the bat this season, Omarzai has managed to take four wickets in seven matches at a decent economy rate of 8.86. The Afghan all-rounder is expected to scalp wickets and contain RCB’s batters in the upcoming match.

Rahul Tewatia

Hard-hitting batter Rahul Tewatia has gradually found his form in IPL 2024. Tewatia’s ability to hit big shots has guided him to score 153 runs in 10 matches and is yet to be dismissed in two of them. With a lethal strike rate of 141.67, the left-hander is likely to hammer RCB’s bowlers at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan will lead the spin bowling attack for Gujarat Titans. The Afghan leg-spinner has struggled to carry his IPL 2023 form into the ongoing season and has taken only eight wickets in 10 games. Despite fewer wickets to his name, Rashid has maintained a good economy rate of eight and could play a key role in restricting RCB’s batters to a smaller total.

Sai Kishore

With his spin bowling prowess, Sai Kishore has produced few impressive performances this season. Out of the five matches played, Kishore has scalped seven wickets backed by an economy rate of 9.13. His spin variations will play an important role in guiding GT to crucial breakthroughs against RCB come Saturday.

Noor Ahmad

Noor Ahmad will assist Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore in leading GT’s spin bowling attack. With a noteworthy economy of 8.39, Noor has taken six wickets in eight matches. Additionally, the young Afghan spinner brings a wealth of talent and variation, capable of troubling even the most seasoned batters and he will certainly aim to be among the wickets in the upcoming match.

Mohit Sharma

Mohit Sharma will lead Gujarat’s pace bowling attack in the upcoming match. With 10 wickets in as many matches played, Mohit could be a threat to RCB’s potent batting lineup. His ability to take wickets in powerplays as well as the death overs could help GT bag two crucial points against RCB on Saturday.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) all-rounder Will Jacks opened up on filling the shoes of legendary South African batter AB de Villiers as franchise’s premier overseas batter, saying that the task is “daunting”. Jacks, who was signed by RCB with very little fanfare back in 2022 and missed the 2023 season due to injury, finally delivered big time for the franchise against Gujarat Titans on last Sunday. He had an unbeaten 166-run stand with star batter Virat Kohli. After reaching his fifty in 31 balls, Jacks only took 10 more balls to reach his maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) ton, with five fours and 10 sixes.

His batting exploits and partnership with Virat reminded many fans of what AB used to do during his playing days for RCB and they wasted no time to express these comparisons on the internet.
Speaking during the RCB Insider show, a segment known for its comic content, Jacks addressed the comparisons and called AB a “world legend”.

“It is a bit daunting, it is a bit scary (becoming the next AB de Villiers for RCB). Ab De Villiers is an RCB Legend, He is a World Legend. It is a lot of weight but I will just have to do what I can,” said Jacks.

De Villiers, who scored over 20,000 runs for South Africa from 2004-18, represented the side from 2011-2021 in 157 matches. He scored 4,522 runs at an average of 41.10. He scored two centuries and 37 fifties for the side at a strike rate of over 158. He is also a part of the RCB ‘Hall of Fame’ along with West Indies cricket legend Chris Gayle and Indian pacer Vinay Kumar.

In the ongoing IPL season, Jacks has scored 176 runs in five matches at an average of 44.00 and a strike rate of over 191, with a century and fifty each. His best score is 100*. He has also taken two wickets with his useful spin bowling.

Speaking on being picked by RCB in 2022, Jacks said, “I was at home and I was picked. It was amazing, but I got injured. Could not play the last season. RCB fans are ridiculous.”

On being asked about replacing Glenn Maxwell as his like-to-like replacement and playing golf with him, Jacks hilariously said, “I was happy to get rid of him (the all-rounder took a break after run of poor form), now that he is back I am under pressure. I was driving the buggy. Thought of kicking him out (on if he tried to injure Maxwell while playing golf).”

RCB is at the bottom of the points table with three wins and seven losses, with a total of six points. They will next play Gujarat Titans (GT) at home on Saturday.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru stalwart batter Virat Kohli has special praise in store for his fellow Will Jacks after the Englishman scored his maiden ton in T20 on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium. “Phenomenal” was the word Kohli used to describe Man of the Match Will’s 100* against Gujarat Titans, a knock that carried a plethora of power strokes and emotions of RCB fans. The experienced Englishman provided the much-needed firepower in the batting unit, that Bengaluru have missed on various instances in their failing season. Jacks struck ten towering sixes in his 41-ball hundred, which ranks fifth highest century in the history of the cash-rich league.

“Phenomenal, I mean when he initially came onto bat (on Jacks), he was a bit annoyed that he couldn’t strike the ball as cleanly as he wanted to, but the only conversation between us in the middle was to keep backing, keep committing because we know how explosive he can be. My role completely changed as soon as he got that big over off Mohit, for good, I was glad to be watching the game from the other end. I mean, I thought we could win the game in 19 overs, but to finish it in 15 overs was an outstanding effort,” Kohli said after the game.

While the Englishman made fielders chase the ball around the entire ground, Kohli also made it hard for the GT bowlers to find their rhythm.

Even though, Kohli mesmerized the crowd with his refined shots, he was happy to watch Jacks score runs from the non-striker’s end.

“I think it was one of the better T20I hundreds one would ever see, I was just happy to watch it closely from the other end. The wicket was pretty good, I mean towards the later half of their innings, it started settling down and that was probably the reason why both teams wanted to bowl first., That was evident, the temperature went down, it got cooler and as the wicket settled down, the ball started to come nicely onto the bat. I was just having fun out there, hitting boundaries whenever needed. We never allowed the run-rate to go under 10 rpo (runs per over) at any point of the chase and to do that in the end what Jacks did,” Kohli added.

Coming to the match, after putting GT to bat, Sai Sudharsan (86*) and Shahrukh Khan’s (58) blitz powered the hosts to a competitive total of 200/3.

In reply, after skipper Faf du Plessis’s dismissal, Kohli and Jacks rattled GT’s bowling unit with their 166*-run stand to clinch a 9-wicket win for RCB.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batting all-rounder Will Jacks heaped praise on star batter Virat Kohli and called him the “legend of the game.” Jacks and Kohli played a 133-run partnership while chasing the 201-run target given by Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Sunday. Kohli scored 70 runs from 44 balls at a strike rate of 159.09. He hammered 6 fours and 3 sixes against GT.

Meanwhile, Jacks played a 100-run knock from just 41 balls at a strike rate of 243.90. The 25-year-old just dealt with sixes as he smashed 10 overhead boundaries and 5 fours.

While speaking after the match, Jacks said that Kohli is someone who everyone looks up to. The English cricketer added that he will be learning many things after playing with talisman batter.

The right-handed batter added that he needs to be more “adaptable” at the start of his inning in the upcoming matches.

“It’s amazing, he’s a legend of the game and is someone everyone looks up to. To spend some time in the middle is a great feeling a huge learning curve. When I go away from the IPL, I’ll learn so much from batting with him and playing with him. I’ll try to take it all on board. I need to be a bit more adaptable at the beginning of my innings and get myself in a little bit quicker,” Jacks said.

Summarizing the match, RCB won the toss and decided to field against GT. Following this, Sai Sudharsan (84) and Shahrukh Khan (58) displayed a stellar performance to propel GT to 200/3.

The RCB bowlers were sloppy in the opening of the game. Maxwell, Siraj, and Swapnil were the only wicket-takers for the visitors.

During the run chase, Virat Kohli (70) and Will Jacks (100) handed RCB their third win of the season by beating GT by 9 wickets.

Sai Kishore was the only wicket-taker for the GT after he dismissed Faf du Plessis in the fourth over.

Following the win, RCB still stand in the bottom place on the IPL 2024 standings with six points. Meanwhile, GT hold the seventh place with 8 points after winning four of 10 matches.

What was supposed to be a challenging run-chase of 201 runs against Gujarat Titans (GT) for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) turned into a child’s play within a matter of few overs as Virat Kohli and Will Jacks made a mockery of 2022 champions’ spin trio of Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmed, Sai Kishore and pacer Mohit Sharma with their incredible six-hitting. They sent the fans down memory lane and reminded them of heroics by Virat with AB de Villiers against a now-defunct Gujarat Lions back in the 2016 season, where they both scored centuries and put on a 229-run stand for the second wicket.

The duo put on a partnership of 166 runs in just 73 balls to guide their team to a nine-wicket win. Virat smashed an unbeaten 70 in 44 balls, with six fours and three sixes to hold one end steady, while Jacks unleashed unprecedented carnage after reaching his fifty in 31 balls as he reached his century in 41 balls, with five fours and 10 sixes, going on a six-hitting spree.

Here are the records re-written and shattered by Jacks-Virat during their partnership:

-10 balls: Jacks took just 10 balls to convert a half-century into a match-winning ton. This is the fewest a player has taken to reach a hundred in the IPL. The previous best was by Chris Gayle, who took only 13 balls to convert his half-century into a ton, reaching the three-figures in just 30 balls against now-defunct Pune Warriors back in 2013.

-This is only RCB’s second 200-plus run-chase in IPL history, that has come after a massive gap of 14 years. The Red and Gold side has given a platform to superstar batters like Virat, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Faf Du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Kevin Pietersen etc over the years to showcase their proven, international-level class for the franchise and yet such a gap existed. RCB’s previous 200-plus run chase was back in March 2010 against Punjab Kings, when Jacques Kallis (89*) and Robin Uthappa (51*) powered them to a successful chase of 204 runs.

-RCB is the first team to secure a win by nine or more wickets during a run-chase of over 200 runs in the IPL.

-This exciting franchise was still left with 24 balls when a gigantic six by Jacks helped him get his century and the team their third victory. This is the largest win in terms of balls remaining in IPL history (and the joint-largest in all of T20 cricket), overtaking MI’s win over RCB in 2023 when they were left with 23 balls while chasing 200 runs.

-Virat brought his absolute top game against spin, clubbing Rashid, Noor and Sai with class and consistency he has not shown against spinners for a long while. Known to attack pacers over spin, a different Virat turned up for this match. He scored 61 runs out of his 70 against spin, the most he has made against spin in a single T20 innings. Also, his strike rate of 179.41 against spinners was his third-highest against the spinners in IPL, after 240.90 against Punjab Kings (scoring 53 in 22 balls out of a total of 113 in 50 balls) (PBKS) in 2016 and 188.46 against Gujarat Lions in 2016 (Scoring 49 in 26 balls out of a total of 109 in 55 balls).

-The T20 superstar from Afghanistan, Rashid Khan continued his rough run in the IPL 2024 as he was given a beating to remember. In the 16th over, Virat took a single and Jacks unleashed his carnage to smash 6,6,4,6,6 in the next five balls, looting 29 runs from the over. This is Rashid’s most expensive over in all of T20 cricket.

-Jacks smashed 95 runs in the middle overs (seven to 16 overs), the third most by a batter in an IPL innings during middle overs, with the first being Virender Sehwag scoring 107 runs against Deccan Chargers back in 2011 and Gayle smashing 105 runs in this phase against PWI in 2013.

-This is the seventh season for Virat where he has scored 500 runs or more. He is the first Indian to do so and the only second player after David Warner to achieve this feat.

-All four of Jacks’s T20 centuries have come in 50 or fewer balls, the fastest one coming in 41 balls for Pretoria Capitals against Durban Super Giants (DSG) in SA20 2024. Gayle (10), Maxwell (5) and Suryakumar Yadav (4) are the other players having four or more hundred off 50 or fewer balls in T20 cricket.

Coming to the match, half-centuries from Sai Sudarshan (84 in 49 balls, with 12 fours and four sixes) and Shahrukh Khan (58 in 28 balls, with three fours and five sixes) helped GT overcome a slow start with the bat. David Miller’s useful 26* in 19 balls, with two fours and a six helped GT reach 200/3 in 20 overs.

Swapnil Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Maxwell got a wicket each.

In the run-chase, Faf Du Plessis, the skipper (24 in 12 balls, with a four and three sixes) departed early, but Jacks and Virat put on a partnership to remember to win the game for their side.

Jacks took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

RCB is at the bottom with three wins, seven losses and six points. GT is at seventh with four wins, six losses and eight points.
