Pakistan got off to a forgettable start in their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign as they lost against New Zealand by 60 runs. Opting to bowl first, Pakistan gave away 320 runs after Will Young and Tom Latham smashed centuries. Later, the hosts got bundled out for 260 as their batters completely failed to put up a strong fight against the Kiwis. For New Zealand, skipper Mitchell Santner and William O’Rourke scalped three wickets each. After this loss, former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal slammed Mohammad Rizwan and co for their poor performance.

In a conversation on ARY News, Kamran asked lashed out at Team Pakistan and called them undeserving for Champions Trophy.

Zimbabwe aur Ireland ki series ho rahi hai, udhar jaayein. Wahan jaake khelein aur agar hum udhar jeette hain toh hum deserve karte hain (Champions Trophy). Humari iss tarah ki cricket ho rahi hai. Itni neeche gir gayi hai humari cricket pichle 6-7 saal mein. (There’s a series going on between Zimbabwe and Ireland. Go there and play with them. And if you win against them, then only you deserve to play the Champions Trophy. This is condition of Pakistan cricket. Our cricket standards have fallen drastically in the last 6-7 years.)” said Kamran.

During the Champions Trophy opener, New Zealand were struggling at 73/3 but centuries from Will Young and Tom Latham helped them reach 320/5 in 50 overs. Kamran went on to praise New Zealand for their mature brand of cricket.

“They (New Zealand) were three wickets down in the early stages of the match. Look at their maturity that they took time, rotated the strike and started firing only after getting the full control. This is what a mature team does. They always come with a backup plan. Their batter Rachin Ravindra got injured and even his replacement (Will Young) scored a century,” said Kamran.

After the match, Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan admitted that the team made mistakes against the Kiwis.

“They made a good target, we didn’t expect that. We were looking at something around 260. We tried our best and used all tactics, but they played well and put up a good target. We see the pitch conditions, earlier the pitch wasn’t easy to bat but when Will Young and Latham got together batted it got easier. At the end, we made the same mistake like we did in Lahore and they made a good target,” said Rizwan during the post match presentation.

Rohit Sharma remains one of the finest and most respected captains in the game. But, New Zealand’s 3-0 series win against India in the recently concluded Test assignment has made many raise questions on his tactical acumen. As pressure piles on Rohit to deliver in the forthcoming series against Australia, many wonder if Rohit will be removed as captain if India don’t do well Down Under. Now, New Zealand star Will Young has revealed how he foiled Rohit’s tactical plans with ease, forcing the India skipper to change his strategies against the Kiwis.

In a chat with ESPNCricinfo, Young revealed his learnings from the India tour in 2021 where he and some of the other batters in the team learned to master their skills on spin-friendly surfaces.

We toured here in 2021 and we had a two-Test match series, in Kanpur and Mumbai, and the batting group that’s here is largely the same as the one three years ago,” he said.

“So I suppose if you look at it with a wider lens, you can say that we’ve been learning since then. There’s been lots of tours to the subcontinent, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and even some spinning surfaces at home at times. We were always keen to learn and adapt and grow as batsmen,” the batter added.

Speaking of the 2024 assignment, Young said that Rohit and Jadeja had devised a plan to put pressure on him by blocking the mid-off region to score runs. However, Young manage to make Rohit change the tactic quickly as he efficiently developed a counter-strategy.

“It was just this one particular passage of play [in Mumbai] where Jadeja had brought mid-off up. Most of the series he’d had him back because he was quite comfortable for the right-handers to try to push the ball into the off side and bring the slips into play. But this particular passage of play, Jadeja and Rohit had decided to bring mid-off up.”

“And I just felt that if the ball was full enough, I could try to reach it and smother the spin and get it over the top straight. And I had a chat to Daryl Mitchell about it in between overs and he said, “Yeah, mate, just back yourself.””

“He said make sure you stay down through the shot or something along those lines. He’s obviously very good at it [hitting down the ground] himself. So when the opportunity arose, I took it and then the fielder went back and I could keep on playing from there,” he added.

Indian wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant and New Zealand’s veteran Daryl Mitchell got the rewards of strong performances during the third Test in Mumbai as the two players have climbed to top 10 in latest ICC Test rankings released on Wednesday. After impressive half-centuries during the Test, Pant has climbed five spots to claim the sixth position in the Test Batter Rankings. This rise brings him close to his career-best ranking of fifth, which he last held in July 2022. Mitchell has also seen a substantial rise, climbing eight places to reach seventh overall after a first-inning score of 82 in Mumbai. He now joined his fellow New Zealander Kane Williamson, who holds the second position.

England’s Joe Root maintained a comfortable lead at the top of the Test batter chart, followed by Williamson, Harry Brook (third), Yashasvi Jaiswal (fourth), and Steve Smith (fifth). India’s Shubman Gill has also made strides, moving up four places to 16th after his 90-run effort in the first innings against New Zealand.

Player of the Series Will Young, who was instrumental in New Zealand’s success, shot up 29 places to reach 44th overall.

In the bowling department, India’s left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja surged two spots to claim sixth position following a stunning 10-wicket haul against New Zealand. His teammate Washington Sundar also made gains, advancing seven spots to 46th among Test bowlers.

New Zealand’s spin attack similarly saw rewards. Ajaz Patel climbed 12 places to 22nd, while Ish Sodhi improved by three rungs, reaching equal 70th.

Meanwhile, South African spinner Keshav Maharaj rose four places to reach 19th, bolstered by his impressive 13-wicket haul against Bangladesh in South Africa’s recent series victory.

The latest ODI rankings also feature considerable movement. West Indies captain Shai Hope has moved up five places to 12th among ODI batters, following his 17th ODI century in the second match against England. England’s Liam Livingstone saw a significant rise, moving up 32 spots to 58th after his century in the same clash.

Pace bowlers Shaheen Afridi and Mitchell Starc made strides on the ODI Bowler Rankings. He moved up three spots to claim fourth, while Starc climbed four places to 14th following their opening performances in Australia’s ODI series against Pakistan.

Scotland’s Brandon McMullen also saw an improvement in the ODI all-rounder category, advancing three spots to reach sixth.
