The parents of the victim in Kolkata’s RG Kar rape and murder have met West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, requesting the governor to take up their grievances with President Droupadi Murmu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“On 30.01.2025 the parents of the R.G.Kar Medical College and Hospital victim called on HG and submitted a representation. The parents narrated their grievances and pleaded for justice,” West Bengal Raj Bhavan Media Cell posted on X.

“They requested HG to take up their case with the Hon’ble President of India and the Hon’ble Union Home Minister to whom they have already submitted their representations. HG agreed to do the needful. HG assuaged their feelings and indicated that they were not alone in their grief and that humanity stands with them. Justice shall prevail. Officer on Special Duty.”

Meanwhile, the parents withdrew their plea before the Supreme Court on Wednesday, seeking a fresh investigation into the incident.

The plea was filed by the victim’s parents as an Intervention Application (IA) in the suo motu case, which had been registered by the top court in August last year, a few days after the infamous incident took place.

When the case was heard on Thursday, a Bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar asked Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy whether the Court should proceed with the case, as a plea regarding similar issues had already been filed before the Calcutta High Court.

After considering the submissions made in the affidavit filed before it, the Court warned the senior counsel to be cautious with her arguments, as there is already a conviction against the sole accused (now convict) Sanjoy Roy in the case. The Court suggested that Nundy withdraw the plea and file a fresh one, noting that the original plea had been filed by the victim’s parents before the trial and conviction.

Following a brief exchange, the senior lawyer withdrew the plea, with the liberty to file a fresh one as per the Court’s order. On January 20, a Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court convicted and sentenced Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of the victim in the RG Kar rape and murder case.

After the trial court’s decision, there has been an uproar, especially among doctors and medical workers, who are calling for Roy to be awarded the death penalty for his gruesome act. There are also calls for reinvestigation into the matter, as concerns have been raised regarding the manner in which the investigation was conducted.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Sunday for his role in upholding the principles of the Constitution in “very adversarial circumstances”.

Doctors of Assam also met the governor and demanded justice for the medic’s murder in a state-run Kolkata hospital and security for medical professionals.

Mr Sarma called upon Mr Bose in Guwahati and shared a short video of their meeting on X.

“In my courtesy meeting with the Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal Dr C V Ananda Bose Ji in Guwahati, I conveyed our immense appreciation for his sagacity in defending the Constitution even in very adversarial circumstances,” Mr Sarma wrote on the micro-blogging site.

The video featured both exchanging scarves and books and then sitting down for a conversation.

The governor and the Assam CM had discussions over the ongoing situation in Bengal in the wake of the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor, sources said.

Mr Bose and Mr Sarma also held discussions over developments in Bangladesh, they said.

The official X handle of the West Bengal governor also shared photographs of the meeting.

“The doctors of Assam expressed solidarity with the brutal murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor in the RG Kar Medical College, called on the honourable governor and expressed their grievances,” it said in another post.

They submitted a memorandum requesting for the safety and security of medical professionals, it added.

Bose assured them of taking an initiative to ensure the protection of all those working in the health sector in Bengal, including legal action, an official said.

The governor also assured them that demands and grievances of the protesting doctors would be brought to the attention of the prime minister, home and health ministers, the official added.

Kolkata:

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose today said that he was apprehending a threat to his security because of the presence of the current contingent of Kolkata Police posted at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata.

His statement came days after he ordered the police personnel to vacate the Raj Bhavan premises. They, however, are still on duty in the Governor House.

“I have reasons to believe that the presence of the current officer-in-charge and his team is a threat to my personal security,” Governor Bose told Press Trust of India.

“I have informed Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee that I am insecure with Kolkata Police in Raj Bhavan, but there was no action,” he said.

Sources in the Governor House told Press Trust of India that Governor Bose has complained to the state government that there has been constant snooping by the police personnel posted in Raj Bhavan and he could sense that they were doing it on the insistence of “influencers” from outside.
