All lined up for polling in Tamil Nadu for high stakes byelection; TVK, DMK keep fingers crossed

Preparations are complete for the polling exercise to be held today for byelections to Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly Constituencies and the Tamil Nadu voters are poised to decide the fortunes of the fledgling TVK regime which hinges on outside support for its survival.

The hectic campaign by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, DMK President MK Stalin, Leader of Opposition Udhyanidhi Stalin and AIADMK supremo Edappadi K Palaniswami, not seen often during run up to the bypolls, has only underscored the political significance as results are pretty crucial for both the ruling and Opposition camps.

For the TVK, the poll outcome will decide if it can shore-up its strength in the Assembly or not, and as regards the DMK, which did not expect to lose the April Assembly polls, it will be crucial to bounce back. After being pushed to the third spot, the AIADMK has strained every nerve to take back its space.

The bypolls face a tough five-corner fight as the ruling TVK, main opposition DMK, key Dravidian party AIADMK, the Left Front, and Tamil nationalist TVK are in the fray.

West Bengal by-elections to test Trinamool rival groups’ claim over party symbol

With by-elections for two Assembly constituencies in West Bengal -Nandigram and Rejinagar- scheduled on October 6, both factions of Trinamool Congress -one led by Mamata Banerjee and the other by Ritabrata Banerjee- have decided to field candidates on both the seats.

However, the question is making rounds in the political circles: who will get the “ grass and twin-flowers’ symbol of Trinamool Congress in the upcoming by-elections.

“We will contest the by-polls. At the time of filing nominations, we will state that our candidates are from the Trinamool Congress and claim the twin-flower symbol. If the Election Commission does not allot the symbol to us by the deadline, our candidates will contest as independents,” Opposition Chief Whip in the West Bengal Assembly Akhruzzaman said on Wednesday (September 9, 2026).

Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, Akhruzzaman and the majority of the MLAs of the Trinamool Congress had moved away from Mamata Banerjee weeks after the 2026 Assembly poll debacle. 80 MLAs of the Trinamool Congress were elected to the 18th West Bengal Assembly on May 4, 2026, and more than 65 of them have turned rebels and have cut ties with Mamata Banerjee. Ritabrata Banerjee, Akhruzzaman and other leaders of the rebel faction have made representation to the ECI seeking a claim over the party symbol.

The Mamata Banerjee faction will not let the opportunity to field candidates in the by-elections go, particularly when it has only a handful of MLAs in the State Assembly. Sources in the Mamata Banerjee group say that the party will field candidates. Mamata Banerjee loyalists say that the party symbol of grass with twin flowers remains with them till the ECI decides otherwise.

There are some speculations that the party chairperson may contest from either of the two seats, though there is no official word on it. Ms. Banerjee lost to Suvendu Adhikari by a narrow margin of 1526 votes in 2021 from the Nandigram Assembly seat. Rejinagar in Murshidabad has a majority of the electorate from the Muslim community, and if all opposition parties support the Trinamool Congress chairperson, she might find her way back into the State assembly.

The by-elections have been necessitated by Suvendu Adhikari, who won from Bhabanipur and Nandigram, giving up Nandigram and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) leader Humayun Kabir, who won from Naoda and Rejinagar, giving up Rejinagar. Suvendu Adhikari had won the Nandigram seat in the 2026 Assembly polls by a margin of 9,665 votes while Humayun Kabir had won Rejinagar seat by a margin of 58876 votes.

Mr. Kabir’s son, Golam Nabi Azad, on Wednesday (September 9, 2026) filed his nomination as a candidate for the AJUP. The last date of filing nomination for the by-elections is September 16.

Bypoll Election Results 2024: Fate of candidates contesting on 48 assembly seats will be decided today.

New Delhi:

The counting of votes for byelections will begin at 8 am. Over the past few weeks, bypolls were held on 48 assembly seats in 14 states – Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Elections were also held on two Lok Sabha seats – Kerala’s Wayanad and Maharashtra’s Nanded.

These elections mark the electoral debut of Congress’ Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is contesting in Wayanad, earlier held by her brother Rahul Gandhi. The election was necessitated in Wayanad after Rahul Gandhi won both Wayanad and Rae Bareli seats and decided to retain the latter.

Rahul Gandhi has been actively campaigning for his sister Priyanka Gandhi. In one of the election rallies, he said, “If she likes you, she will do whatever; beyond anything you can imagine. She is also going to like Wayanad a lot. You see, a huge part of being a good MP is that you like the people and place you work for. She is going to like it.”

The bypolls results for six assembly seats in West Bengal will be interesting and a test for the ruling Trinamool Congress as protests in the RG Kar rape and murder case continue.

The TMC hopes to maintain the momentum set since 2021, having won nearly all assembly by-polls, except Sagardighi in February 2023.

Chhattisgarh Bypoll Results: 30 Candidates Compete For Raipur City South
In Chhattisgarh, 30 candidates are competing for one assembly seat – Raipur City South. The need for a bypoll on one seat arose after sitting BJP legislator and former state minister Brijmohan Agrawal resigned following his election to the Lok Sabha from the Raipur parliamentary constituency.

Bihar Bypoll Results: Four Assembly Seats, 38 Candidates. Who Will Win?
In Bihar, bypolls were held on four assembly seats – Tarari, Imamganj, Belaganj and Ramgarh – with 38 candidates in the queue. All the poll-bound seats fall in the area south of the Ganga, considered a stronghold of the Mahagathbandhan, comprising Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Indian National Congress (INC) and Left parties.

West Bengal Bypoll Results: Will Trinamool Retain Its Stronghold?
Of the six seats in the picture – Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur, Taldangra, Sitai (SC), and Madarihat (ST) – five are in the Trinamool strongholds of south Bengal. Madarihat remains a BJP bastion in the northern part of the state.

Rajasthan Bypoll Results: 7 Seats, 69 Candidates
Seven seats, namely Jhunjhunu, Dausa, Deoli-Uniara, Khinvsar, Chorasi, Salumber and Ramgarh, will seal the fates of 69 candidates — 10 women and 59 men. Apart from the BJP and the Congress, Hanuman Beniwal’s Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) and Rajkumar Rathore’s Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) have also fielded candidates as they face the challenge of defending their strongholds.

The Jat-dominated Khinsvar seat will witness a triangular contest with the BJP’s Revant Ram Danga up against the Congress’ Ratan Chaudhary and the RLP’s Kanika Chaudhary, the wife of party chief Hanuman Beniwal. The seat fell vacant after Hanuman Beniwal got elected to Lok Sabha this year. Danga and Beniwal were once close aides but later parted ways.

Trinamool Ex-MLA Mitali Roy Snubbed Ahead Of Key Poll Joins BJP

A former Trinamool legislator defected to the BJP on Sunday after being snubbed for a crucial by-election to the seat she once held. Mitali Roy won from Dhupguri in 2016, but lost to BJP’s Bishnupada Roy in 2021. The BJP leader’s death last month led to the assembly bypoll next Tuesday.

Ms Roy is seen as an influential leader locally and the BJP termed her defection as a big blow to the Trinamool.

“Within 24 hours of @abhishekaitc’s public meeting, Mitali Roy, former MLA of Dhupguri assembly, left Trinamool and joined BJP today at Dhupguri election office…! The end of Trinamool has begun!! Long live BJP,” said West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar.

West Bengal minister Shashi Panja retorted with a “washing machine” jibe at the BJP, an allegation often made by non-BJP parties to symbolise that every corrupt person comes out clean after joining the BJP.

“@BJP4Bengal’s Washing Machine politics continues! Foes of 2021 becoming Friends in 2023 displays nothing but political opportunism! This proves, once again, that BJP has no organisational hold of its own,” she said.

Ms Roy isn’t the only politician to have jumped ship ahead of the crucial bypoll. BJP’s former district president Dwipen Pramanik joined the Trinamool last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Trinamool number two Abhishek Banerjee, who campaigned in Dhupguri on Saturday, said if the INDIA alliance comes to power LPG cylinder prices will drop to Rs 500.

“They have reduced Rs 200 for LPG cylinders terming it a gift for Raksha Bandhan. I want to ask the Prime Minister – does the festival of Rakhi come once every five years?” he asked.

“When the BJP lost in West Bengal during the 2021 Assembly polls, they reduced the prices for petrol and diesel. If BJP wins the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, LPG prices will hit Rs 3,000. But if INDIA Alliance wins, the prices of LPG cylinders will go down to Rs 500,” he added.

Significance of Dhupguri Bypoll

Dhupguri is being seen an important indicator of the voters’ mood in North Bengal, a region swept by the BJP during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2021 assembly elections. However, Trinamool claims it has been able to regain some lost ground in the region and hopes to wrest the seat from the BJP.

The bypoll will primarily be a Trinamool vs BJP fight. The Left has fielded a candidate supported by the Congress, an indicator of the tricky issue of seat-sharing for the INDIA alliance in West Bengal.

Trimamool has fielded college professor Nirmal Chandra Roy for the bypoll and the BJP has nominated Tapasi Roy, the widow of a central police force personnel killed in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021. The CPM has fielded folk singer Ishwar Chandra Roy.

The campaigning ended today for Tuesday’s bypoll and the votes will be counted on Friday.

A total of 30 companies of central forces will be deployed for the bypoll.
