The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has decided to reduce the number of weight categories in both the men’s and women’s sections from 10 to 8 from June next year following a proposal by its Innovation Commission. The 55kg category in men’s section will be scrapped and competitions will start from 60kg, with categories in the 70s, 80s and 90s also being altered. The new proposed categories in the men’s section are 60kg, 65kg, 71kg, 79kg, 88kg, 98kg, 110kg, 110kg as compared to 55kg, 61kg, 67kg, 73kg, 81kg, 89kg, 96kg, 102kg, 109kg, and 109kg earlier.

In the women’s section, the 45kg category will be discarded and a new 48kg category introduced along with 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 77kg, 86kg, and 86kg as compared to 45kg, 49kg, 55kg, 59kg, 64kg, 71kg, 76kg, 81kg, 87kg, and 87kg.

The 49kg category, in which India’s Mirabai Chanu had won a silver medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, has also been scrapped.

“Approval of the IWF Innovation Commission proposal to introduce new bodyweight categories, from June 2025. In the men’s competition, they will be: 60kg, 65kg, 71kg, 79kg, 88kg, 98kg, 110kg, 110kg. Among women, the new categories are: 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 77kg, 86kg, 86kg,” said the IWF Executive Board, which met here on December 2-3, in a statement.

It is not known what will be the Olympic and Non-Olympic weight classes in the men’s and women’s sections for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

During the 2024 Paris Olympics, only five weight classes were chosen — 61kg, 73kg, 89kg, 102kg and over 102kg in men and 49kg, 59kg, 71kg, 81kg and over81 kg in women.

Indian weightlifter Valluri Ajaya Babu produced a record-breaking performance to clinch the gold medal in the men’s 81kg junior and senior categories at the Commonwealth Championships at Suva in Fiji on Thursday. The 19-year-old Babu heaved a total of 326kg (147kg + 179kg) to finish on top of the podium. With his performance, Babu set a Commonwealth record clean and jerk in the 81kg junior category. He also smashed the junior national marks in snatch, clean and jerk and total weight sections.

Compatriot Sairaj Pardeshi bagged the youth gold in the same category while finishing second in the junior section behind Babu.

Lalruatfela won the silver in the men’s 89kg event with a best effort of 301kg (135kg+166kg) while Hrudananda Das, who lifted 299kg (129kg+170kg), clinched the silver medal in the youth category and the bronze in the junior section.

Bulgarian Karlos Nasar became the lightest man to lift 400 kilogrammes in competition as he shattered the men’s 89kg weightlifting world record at the Olympics on Friday. “The Olympic Games are like going into space for me and I feel like I’m on Mars,” said the 20-year-old Nasar. Tied for first after lifting 180kg in the opening snatch round, the 20-year-old delayed his entry in the clean and jerk until most of his rivals had used their three attempts at lower weights.

With his first lift he flipped 213 kilogrammes over his head to secure the gold.

That left him two attempts to total 400kg and he opted to aim high.

Nasar seemed barely troubled. Pausing an extra beat with the bar on his chest, he grinned, before hoisting a world record 224kg over his head for a total of 404kg, another record.

Nasar has reportedly lifted even greater weights in training.

“I have visualised the win many times and I succeeded each time,” he said.

When asked if he was playing to the camera, Nasar grinned.

“Sometimes the emotions that I show, I cannot control,” he said. “Sometimes I don’t even remember what happened on the stage.”

Colombian Yeison Lopez was second on 390kg. Italian Antonino Pizzolato scored a dramatic bronze after failing on his first two attempts before he was only spared a no-score when judges upheld his appeal after a video review.

The talk at the press conference rapidly turned to Nasar’s romantic life.

Nasar said he would be heading to the rhythmic gymnastics on Saturday to support the Bulgarian team and his girlfriend Magdalina Minevska.

Weightlifting has long struggled to rid itself of the negative image as a playground for dopers.

Nasar, who set his first world record at 17, could be the charismatic bad boy the sport needs to generate more favourable interest.

In 2022, he was arrested in a Bulgarian beach resort and the following February received a suspended prison sentence for driving under the influence of recreational drugs and without a licence and trying to evade arrest.

In May last year, he reached for the soap while showering in a Sofia hotel, dislodging the sink which shattered slicing one of his Achilles’ tendons. He required surgery.

“Every single movement is painful,” he said at the time. “It’s hard to even brush my teeth and open my eyes.”

Ukrainian double European champion weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko has been killed in the war against Russia, the Ukrainian weightlifting federation announced on Monday. Pielieshenko, 30, won European gold in 2016 and 2017, and narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics where he came fourth in the 85kg category.

“It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that the heart of the great Ukrainian sportsman Oleksandr Pielieshenko has stopped beating,” the federation reported in a statement.

Ukraine’s national weightlifting coach Victor Slobodianiuk said Pielieshenko had “died a hero defending Ukraine” in a post on Facebook.

Pielieshenko joined the Ukrainian army in February 2022 at the start of the Russian invasion, noted the Ukrainian Olympic Committee.

Tokyo Olympics silver-medallist Mirabai Chanu all but qualified for the 2024 Paris Games after she finished third in the women’s 49kg Group B event of the IWF World Cup on Monday. Returning from a six-month injury lay off, Chanu lifted a total of 184kg (81kg+103kg) at the tournament, which is the final and a mandatory qualifier for the Paris Olympics. “It feels incredible to come back after an injury. Almost every lift I made today felt clean, clear, and powerful, and I’m leaving this competition feeling strong and confident,” Chanu said.

“The rehabilitation was tough and demanding, but with the support of everyone involved in my rehab and recovery, I pushed through all the complications.” With the completion of her event, Chanu has fulfilled the criteria for the Paris Olympics, which is participating in two compulsory events and three other qualifiers.

The 2017 world champion is currently ranked second in the women’s 49kg Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) behind China’s Jian HuiHua.

The qualification period for weightlifting will end on April 28, following which the IWF will notify the NOCs which have athlete(s) ranked in the top 10.

The top 10 lifters from each weight class will qualify for the Paris Olympics.

“The goal was to secure my spot for the Paris Olympics, and now that I am almost through for the Paris Olympics, all my attention is on making a mark at the Paris Olympics,” she added.

Chanu, who last competed at the Asian Games in September where she suffered a hip tendonitis injury, was not at her best, but was able to make five clean lifts.

Her final clean and jerk attempt of 106kg was deemed a no lift on technicality.

“Today’s event was to assess how Mira’s body is progressing given she is returning after six months of injury and rehabilitation. And more importantly to get her confidence back,” chief coach Vijay Sharma told PTI.

“We were not bothered about the qualification, she has already qualified. Now we will focus on peaking at the right time in Paris,” he added.

Chanu’s lifts in the snatch and clean and jerk sections were nowhere close to her personal best efforts.

The 29-year-old has a personal best of 88kg in snatch while she had lifted the then world record of 119kg in clean and jerk at the Asian Championships in 2021.

But given that she is coming off an injury and rehab, Chanu still has time to peak in July and her progress looks good.

She will have a lot of ground to cover up as her opponents had total efforts of up to 221kg in the A category on Monday.

Chanu will be the lone Indian weightlifter at the Paris Games, which will be her third appearance at the Olympics.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist weightlifter Achinta Sheuli has been expelled from the Paris Olympics preparatory camp after he was caught entering the women’s hostel at night at NIS Patiala. The disciplinary breach occurred on Thursday night. The 22-year-old, who competes in the men’s 73kg weight class, was caught by security personnel, who made a video of the lifter. “Obviously, such indiscipline will not be tolerated. Achinta was asked to leave the camp immediately,” an Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

The Sports Authority of India and NIS Patiala Executive Director Vineet Kumar were immediately made aware of the incident. Since there was video evidence of the incident, SAI did not constitute an investigating panel.

“The video was sent to NIS Patiala ED Vineet Kumar and the SAI headquarters in New Delhi and IWLF was asked to remove Achinta from the camp,” a SAI source said.

Sheuli, who won the gold medal at the 2022 Birmingham CWG with a Games record, left the camp on Friday.

The facility in Patiala has separate hostels for men and women athletes. Currently, women boxers, athletes and wrestlers are stationed at the NIS.

This is not the first time the IWLF has taken strict action against a lifter for a disciplinary breach. CWG and Youth Olympics champion Jeremy Lalrinnunga was evicted from the national camp on grounds of indiscipline before.

Sheuli out of Olympic race

Following his expulsion, Sheuli’s chances of qualifying for the Olympics have also ended as he will not be travelling for this month’s IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand, which is a mandatory event for Paris Games qualification.

Sheuli is currently placed 27th in the Olympic qualification rankings and had a chance of making the cut via the continental quota.

“It is such a pity because he had actually started getting back on track after his injury,” the source added.

Only Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu (49kg) and CWG silver medallist Bindyarani Devi remain in contention for the Paris Games.

The two will be travelling to Thailand later this month to take part in the IWF World Cup.

The tournament will mark Chanu’s return to competition after suffering a hip tendinitis injury in August last year.

Under the 2024 Olympic qualification rule, a lifter has to compulsorily compete in the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup.

Apart from the above, the lifters also have to participate in three of the following events — the 2022 World Championships, the 2023 Continental Championships, the 2023 Grand Prix 1, the 2023 Grand Prix II and the 2024 Continental Championships.

Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu will undergo tests on October 3 in Mumbai to find out the severity of the thigh injury she suffered at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Despite feeling some pain in her thigh during the warm-ups, Chanu went ahead with her six attempts in the women’s 49kg competition at the continental showpiece, which led to injury on Saturday. Chanu, who will fly back to India on Sunday, will be undergoing tests at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute in Mumbai. “We have to wait and find out the extent of her injury. She can’t put down her foot as of now. Tomorrow we will have some idea depending on if she is able to walk,” head coach Vijay Sharma told PTI over the phone from Hangzhou.

“We are trying to do all the the tests on Monday but since it’s 2nd October lets see if it is possible. Otherwise it will happen on Tuesday. We have spoken to a reputed doctor in Mumbai and booked appointment for October 4,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the 2017 world champion had managed to lift the 117kg bar which rested on her collarbone, ready to be jerked, but the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist’s hip gave up and she crumbled on the floor.

Lying on her back in agony, Sharma had to lift Chanu and carry her away from the platform in his arms. Had the two-time Commonwealth Games champion succeeded in lifting 117kg, she would have won the bronze medal.

After winning medals at the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships, an Asian Games medal was the only silverware left to adorn the 29-year-old’s illustrious trophy cabinet.

“After snatch I asked her to pull out but she insisted on going through. She is mentally very tough and insisted that she’ll mange the lift and stand on the podium,” Sharma said.

Immediately after failing to clear her first 86kg snatch attempt, a grimace had spread on the former world champion’s face. But she persisted.

Sharma said had everything worked out, Chanu would have logged the much-anticipated 90kg lift in snatch.

“Mira (Chanu) has been lifting 90kg in training for the past 2-3 months. She lifted that in the selection trials as well.

“It’s unfortunate, Mira was oncourse for a medal. She was fit also. It’s all God’s doing. Last year she was at peak fitness and looked strong but the Asian Games were postponed by a year due to COVID,” Sharma said.

At the Asian Championships in May, a dodgy hip had forced her to skip the last two attempts, dashing her hopes of a medal.

Mirabai Chanu has been a frontrunner in the women’s 49kg category for years but with an increasing number of weightlifters breaching the elusive 90kg mark, the pressure is mounting on the Tokyo Olympics medallist to nail the coveted lift. As many as seven athletes, including five in this current Olympic cycle, have lifted 90kg or more in the snatch section, Chanu herself has been working to cross the mark since 2019. However, the much-anticipated 90kg snatch lift has eluded her in her two attempts in the past four years.

The Manipuri athlete had first attempted it at the National Championships in February 2020 and then again at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Chanu’s personal best in the section remains an underwhelming 88kg and the gulf between with her competitors is increasing every tournament.

The Chinese duo of Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Hou Zhihui and two-time world champion Jiang Huihua has been consistently lifting in excess of 90kg at tournaments.

The return of Thai weightlifters after severing a two-year suspension has made the field more competitive with both Thanyathon Sukcharoen and Surodchana Khambao lifting 90kg at the Asian Championships in May this year.

European champion Mihaela Valentina Cambei (92kg) of Romania and North Korea’s Ri Song Gum (91kg) are the other athletes to have snatched more than 90kg.

The Asian Games, starting in Hangzhou, China on September 23, will be the perfect opportunity for the star Indian lifter to successfully hoist 90kg or more.

“We are aiming to cross the 90kg mark (in snatch) at the Asian Games. It’s been a while since we have been trying to get over that line,” India head coach Vijay Sharma told PTI.

Chanu is at par with her opponents in the clean and jerk section, although her world record lift of 119kg in the section was broken by Huihua, who lifted 120kg at the World Championships this month.

But her snatch performances have been found wanting and often brought down her total weight.

The former world champion has prioritised the Asian Games this year as a medal in the continental event is the only silverware missing from her decorated trophy cabinet.

With two athletes each from weightlifting powerhouses like China and Thailand competing at the Asiad, Chanu will have to elevate her game to stand on the podium in Hangzhou.

Chanu had confessed that the 90kg lift had become somewhat of a mental block last year, ahead of the CWG.

“To reach 96kg, it will take some time and it will be a little difficult for me. But I can reach 93-94kg,” she said.

Additionally, crossing the 90kg mark will also be a huge confidence booster for the 29-year-old ahead of next year’s Paris Olympics.

But lifting close to twice your body weight is easier said than done, especially for Chanu, who struggles with a shoulder imbalance issue that affects her snatch.

Zhihui holds the snatch world record — 96kg — in the lightest women’s Olympic category, which is 8kg more than Chanu’s personal best.

“We have to keep in mind Mira’s body as well. She is aging, and the chances of injuries increase with age. So we have to be careful with the workload,” Sharma said.
