The Madras Regimental Centre at Wellington in the Nilgiris celebrated Infantry Day on Tuesday (October 27, 2026), commemorating the landing of the first Indian Army troops in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on October 27, 1947, to defend the region against Pakistan-backed tribal invaders and the Pakistan Army.

A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Madras Regimental Centre War Memorial. Brigadier S.K. Dutta, Sena Medal (SM), of the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), senior veteran infantry officers and serving personnel of the Centre laid wreaths in honour of the soldiers who had made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.

Veer Naris (war widows) and Veer Matas (mothers of fallen soldiers) were felicitated at a subsequent ceremony, which paid tribute to their next of kin who had laid down their lives in the service of the nation.

As part of the celebrations, a short film on the history and role of the Indian Infantry in post-Independence battles was screened at the Roperaia Auditorium for school students from the Nilgiris district. The students also visited the Madras Regimental Centre Museum to learn about the valour and sacrifices of personnel of the Madras Regiment. A weapon display was organised at the historic Srinagesh Barracks.
