Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer hilariously took a dig at ex-England star Michael Vaughan in a fun banter. Recently, the Rohit Sharma-led side crumbled against Sri Lanka spinners and lost the ODI series by 2-0. During a Q&A on X, Vaughan took a dig at Jaffer by asking him about India’s recent performance in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. “Hi, Wasim .. What was the recent ODI series result in Sri Lanka? I have been away and missed it. Hope all is well,” Jaffer wrote on X.

Wasim responded to Vaughan by bringing up England’s record in the Ashes, in which the Three Lions last emerged victorious in 2015.

“I’ll put it in Ashes terms for you Michael. Ind won as many games in that series as the Tests Eng have won in Aus in last 12 years,” Jaffer wrote on X.

Jaffer previously stated that India’s series defeat wasn’t a reason for concern for him, but it was troublesome for him that India have only three more ODIs left before the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled for the next year.

Avishka Fernando’s 96-run knock and Dunith Wellalage’s five-wicket haul helped Sri Lanka clinch a 110-run win over India in the third ODI match of the series at the R Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday.

This was India’s first ODI assignment after their heartbreaking loss to Australia in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup at home last year in November. This was also their first series ahead of next year’s Champions Trophy, which is set to be held in Pakistan next year.

India’s next assignment in ODIs will be a home series of three matches against England in February next year.

“Wins and losses are part of the game. However, it’s a point of concern that India has just 3 ODIs before the Champions Trophy,” Jaffer wrote on X.

Before taking on their next ODI series, India will engage in a two-match Test series against Bangladesh on September 19 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

New Delhi :

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer said on Sunday that if the Indian pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are able to stay fit for the majority of the series, then the team has a fine opportunity to secure a hat-trick of Test series wins against Australia. The much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy will begin with the First Test, a day match that sets the tone for the series, at Perth Stadium from November 22 to November 26. India has won its last two series in Australia, held in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

Replying to a fan’s query on India’s chances for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy this year, Jaffer highlighted the importance of the availability of the pace trio of Bumrah-Shami and Siraj.

Also, he said that Arshdeep Singh could bring a left-arm pace option and the Indian Premier League (IPL) pace sensation Mayank Yadav, who set the league on fire with some fine bowling performances despite some injuries, could also be a “dark horse” contender to play the series if he is fit enough to play the series.

“If Bumrah, Shami and Siraj stay fit and are able to play most of the series, India have a great opportunity for a hat-trick down under. Arshdeep could bring the left-arm option. And Mayank Yadav dark horse provided he’s fit and available. #AUSvIND,” said Jaffer.

The Second Test, which will take place at Adelaide Oval from December 6 to 10, will have an exciting day-night format under the stadium’s lights. After that, fans will focus on The Gabba in Brisbane, where the third Test will be held during the day on December 14-18.

The customary Boxing Day Test, which is set for December 26-30 at Melbourne’s storied Melbourne Cricket Ground, brings the series to a climax.

The Fifth Test, which will take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney from January 3 to 7, will serve as the series’ climax and promises to be a dramatic conclusion to an exciting match.

In search of their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title, Punjab Kings (PBKS) are set to appoint a new head coach for the next edition of the tournament. According to a report in the Indian Express, former India batter Wasim Jaffer is set to take up the role, succeeding Trevor Bayliss, whose two-year contract ended. This will be Jaffer’s third stint with the Punjab Kings, having been released as the batting consultant by the franchise ahead of this year’s IPL.

The 46-year-old, who played 31 Tests and 2 ODIs for India, was the batting coach of PBKS between 2019-2021 but stepped down from his role before the IPL 2022 auction.

PBKS, who have not made it to the playoffs since 2014, blew hot and cold during the entire IPL 2024 earlier this year, finishing ninth in the points table.

PBKS are IPL’s perennial underachievers, with the franchise one of the four teams yet to win an IPL title.

PBKS recorded the highest successful run-chase in T20 cricket earlier this year, chasing down 262 at the Eden Gardens to beat Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets.

Bayliss, a World Cup winning coach who also guided KKR to two IPL trophies, failed to turn an inconsistent PBKS into a consistent outfit.

He had signed a two-year contract with the Punjab side back in 2022. However, three poor seasons on the trot, with bottom-half finishes in the table isn’t what 2014 finalists were looking forward to.

Jaffer, if appointed, will bring in a fresh approach to the franchise.

Meanwhile, the BCCI is set to meet with all 10 teams on July 31 to discuss the number of retentions teams can make and the Right to Match (RTM) options in hand ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction.

A report by Cricbuzz says IPL CEO Hemang Amin sent text messages to the franchise owners on Thursday morning for the meeting on July 31, telling them that a formal invite with the venue and timing would follow.

As the Indian cricket team won the T20 World Cup 2024, beating South Africa in the final, the Player of the Match award went to Virat Kohli. His 59-ball 76 took India to a defendable total of 176, chasing which, the Proteas fell short of 7 runs. Despite Kohli’s knock proving to be instrumental in India’s victory in the final, there are some who feel he shouldn’t have been given the Player of the Match award. In fact, former India opener Wasim Jaffer feels Kohli wasn’t even the team’s most important batter in the final.

For Jaffer, who was an opening batter for India himself, Axar Patel takes the No. 1 spot in the list of batters whose contributions won the team the match in the final against South Africa.

“Virat Kohli hadn’t scored many runs in the tournament, but he chose the right moment to come good. Cometh the hour, cometh the man as we say, his knock of 76 made a lot of difference and kept one end intact,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.

“The most important part I thought was played by Axar Patel. The cameo that he played ensured that the run rate from India never dropped below eight runs per over. He took the attack to the South African bowlers and didn’t let them settle, forming a crucial partnership with Kohli,” he added.

Jaffer concluded the video by paying tributes to India’s two icons – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma – admitting that their exit will create a big gap in the team.

“Two giants of the game (Rohit and Kohli) have retired from T20Is and this will certainly form a big gap. However, they rightly chose to go out on a high after winning the trophy and we should bow down to the true greats of the game. We will continue to see them in IPL, ODIs and Tests,” Jaffer asserted.

Former Indian cricket team batter Wasim Jaffer believes that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will retire from T20Is after the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Both star batters have struggled to score runs in the tournament till now with Rohit scoring 99 runs in 5 matches and Virat managing just 66 runs in the competition. Ahead of India’s Super 8 match against Australia, Jaffer said that he believes that this can be the last T20I competition for both Rohit and Virat but insisted that they will continue to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he added that the final call will lie with them and the selectors.

“I think they both (Virat and Rohit) will retire from T20Is after the T20 World Cup. It is their call eventually and also the call of the selectors. While they will continue to play in the IPL, I believe we are seeing them for the last time in T20Is at the T20 World Cup,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.

However, Jaffer also backed Kohli to score hundred international centuries in his playing career. Currently, he has 29 Test centuries, 50 ODI centuries and one century in the T20 Internationals.

“Yes, I think Virat Kohli will score hundred international hundreds. He has a lot of time left and the way his fitness is and the way he scores his runs with consistency, I hundred percent expect him to cross hundred hundreds,” Jaffer added.

Meanwhile, Riyan Parag, Abhishek Sharma and Nitish Reddy were rewarded for their exploits in the last IPL with maiden India call-ups for the upcoming white-ball tour of Zimbabwe under the captaincy of Shubman Gill.

Senior players competing in the ongoing T20 World Cup in the Americas, including captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested ahead of a gruelling season.

The Zimbabwe tour comprises five T20 Internationals, beginning July 6.

The T20 World Cup 2024 witnessed a massive upset as the Pakistan cricket team crashed out of the competition after the encounter between United States and Ireland was abandoned due to rain. The Babar Azam-led side slumped to a shocking loss against United States before they were beaten by traditional rivals India in a thriller. While Pakistan did end up defeating Canada in their third group stage match, it was not enough as the abandoned match resulted in their elimination. Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer took to social media to take a dig at Babar Azam and Co after their exit.

“Contrary to popular belief, Pakistan didn’t get knocked out because USA v IRE got rained off. They got knocked out because Pakistan lost to USA,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Due to the two consecutive defeats, Pakistan needed to win both of their remaining matches while United States had to lose both of their matches for Babar Azam and Co to qualify. Even in that scenario, the qualification would have been decided by Net Run Rate (NRR).

However, with the points getting split between United States and Ireland due to their match getting abandoned due to rain, Pakistan crashed out of the tournament with one match remaining.

PCB is now gearing up for a major overhaul and review of the team’s performance and is expected to make major decisions in the coming days.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has said that major surgery is required in the team, hinting at an expected cancellation of players’ central contracts, including the captain Babar Azam and other senior players.

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer said that Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal should open in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 for the Men in Blue side. The ICC T20 World Cup will be played in the West Indies and the USA from June 1 to 29. The Men in Blue will also play Bangladesh in their only warm-up game on June 1 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Jaffer took to his official X account and said that Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav should come out to bat in the third and fourth batting positions. The former India cricketer showered praise on Rohit for playing spin nicely. “Kohli & Jaiswal should open in the World Cup IMO (in my opinion). Rohit & SKY should bat 3 and 4 depending on the start we get. Rohit plays spin really well so batting at 4 shouldn’t be a concern,” Jaffer wrote on X.

India will start their T20 World Cup campaign on June 5 against Ireland at the newly constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Meanwhile, the most-awaited blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan will take place on June 9. They will later play tournament co-hosts USA (June 12) and Canada (June 15) to wrap up their Group A matches.

In the tournament, India will be aiming to end their ICC trophy drought, having last won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. Since then, India has reached the 50-over World Cup final in 2023, semifinal in 2015 and 2019, the title clash of the ICC World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023, T20 WC final in 2014, semifinals in 2016 and 2022 but failed to secure a big ICC trophy.

India will be aiming to win their first T20 WC title since they won the inaugural edition of the tournament back in 2007 in South Africa. In the last edition held in Australia in 2022, India lost to England by 10 wickets in the semifinals.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj.

Reserves: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan.

“Surprised How Quickly They Decided”: Ex-India Star Puts Onus On Umpires For Sanju Samson’s Dismissal https://artifex.news/took-a-decision-in-hurry-ex-india-stars-verdict-on-sanju-samsons-dismissal-row-5615586/ Wed, 08 May 2024 15:37:40 +0000 https://artifex.news/took-a-decision-in-hurry-ex-india-stars-verdict-on-sanju-samsons-dismissal-row-5615586/ Read More ““Surprised How Quickly They Decided”: Ex-India Star Puts Onus On Umpires For Sanju Samson’s Dismissal” »

The IPL 2024 match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals grabbed a lot of limelight, due to the controversial dismissal of Sanju Samson. Chasing 222, RR put up a great fight with skipper Samson leading from the front. However, he was caught on 86 by Shai Hope after he tried to smash a shot towards the long-on of Mukesh Kumar‘s delivery. The catch has led to a massive controversy with fans and experts split over whether Hope was able to complete the catch without touching the boundary rope.

The decision went to the third umpire, who then declared Samson out. Many experts and former cricketers gave their take regarding the catch and former India batter Wasim Jaffer also stated that the third umpire should have taken more time before giving the decision.

“With the replays that we saw, I felt he was out. The foot didn’t touch the rope. There wasn’t conclusive evidence. There was an international umpire there. Shai Hope also said that, although obviously, the fielder will say that only. But overall, with how it looked, I felt that was out,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.

“They should’ve taken more time. I’m surprised at how quickly they decided. It was a very important moment in the match. RR’s win depended on that. You could’ve looked at it with 2-3 more angles or a super slow-mo, too. I felt they took a decision in a hurry,” he added.

Apart from Jaffer, former England batter Paul Collingwood also gave a similar opinion and stated that the third umpire should have checked different angles.

“Goughy (Michael Gough) is a very good friend of mine. So I am going to defend him (chuckles). Maybe he could have given himself another angle, just to double-check. Because it was so, so close. Those decisions and those moments make a huge difference. So maybe he could have given himself a little bit more time,” Collingwood told Star Sports.

“I know in the IPL, the organisers want to quicken things up, the umpires are being told that they have got to quicken the decisions. I think, on this occasion, a couple of more angles, just to clarify could have put everybody at ease. That might have been the best way to go,” he added.

Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody stated that wicketkeeper-batter Prithvi Shaw’s omission from the Delhi Capitals’ (DC) playing XI “doesn’t make sense” and suggested that DC should select 24-year-old batter for their upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 matches. Moody pointed out that, while Shaw has been unimpressive in recent seasons, selecting him over Bhui is a more plausible option given his international cricket experience. “It doesn’t make sense due to the fact that you’ve got an Indian international player (Prithvi Shaw) in the dugout. Yes, he hasn’t performed in the IPL like we had all hoped he would, but you can’t score runs from the dugout,” speaking to ESPNcricinfo Moody stated.

Shaw was benched for Delhi’s first two games this season. Ricky Bhui, a domestic cricket star, has not capitalised on his opportunities, scoring 3 and 0 against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), respectively.

Wasim Jaffer expressed surprise that Delhi did not play Shaw despite keeping him for the IPL 2024 mini-auction. In response to the swashbuckling opener’s omission from DC’s opening two encounters, Jaffer said, “Now that they have held onto him and not let him go into the auction, I’m surprised they’re not playing him. He’s played for Mumbai for most of the season, so you’d imagine that he’s fit. I’m surprised. Punishing him and then losing the games is not the way to go forward.”

Shaw came under fire for a spate of subpar performances in the IPL 2023. He finished with 106 runs from eight innings, an average of 13.25.

Ricky Bhui was caught behind for a duck in Thursday’s match against Rajasthan. Nandre Burger struck out the right-handed batter with a crisp bouncer.

Moody commented on the dismissal, stating that it highlighted the disparity between domestic cricket and the IPL.

“That’s exactly what you’d like to see a genuine quick bowler to do. And to do it to a top-order player is even more alarming. What it does also is highlight the jump between Ranji Trophy runs to international cricket and IPL,” he added.

Rishabh Pant-led side will be desperate to open their account in IPL 2024 when they take on reigning champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday.

India blew England away inside three days in the fifth and final Test, winning by an innings and 64 runs at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Saturday. The hosts were bowled out for 477 early on Day 3, but the damage had already been done. England had a 259-run deficit in front of them and the visitors crumbled to a crushing defeat moments before the scheduled time for Tea. Ravichandran Ashwin claimed his 36th five-wicket haul as England were bowled out for 195.

India came out to field without captain Rohit Sharma on Day 3. He did not take to the field due to a stiff back, with pacer Jasprit Bumrah taking charge as skipper of the team.

Despite Rohit’s absence, there was no lack of aggression from the Indian players. One of the incidents that went viral was Jonny Bairstow‘s spat with Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan.

Gill and Sarfaraz were seen sledging Bairstow. Reacting to the incident, former India opener Wasim Jaffer shared a hilarious post, which had a special mention of Virat Kohli.

Meanwhile, the BCCI President Jay Shah announced an incentive of Rs 45 lakh per game to all those who would play 75 per cent or more of the scheduled red-ball games in a particular season.

A Test player, who appears in a possible 10 Tests in a season will be richer by a whopping Rs 4.50 crore as incentive apart from a possible Rs 1.5 crore (15 lakh per game) in usual match fee.

The top cricketers also get an assured retainer fee from their annual central contracts.

“I am pleased to announce the initiation of the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ for Senior Men, a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes,” Shah stated on ‘X’.

“Commencing from the 2022-23 season, the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ will serve as an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee for Test matches, set at Rs 15 lakh,” he further stated.

The incentives will be retrospective and would factor in players, who were part of Test cricket during the 2022-23 season.
