Former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram discussed whether Team India would travel to his country for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy next year. The Champions Trophy will feature two groups of four teams each, with participants including Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa. “I think from what I’m reading, there are positive vibes from the Indian government and the BCCI. I also read somewhere they might play all their games in Lahore. They’ll probably come to Lahore and travel back the same night. I’m all for it, as long as India is comfortable,” Akram said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

The cricketer-turned-commentator mentioned that players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya have many fans in Pakistan.

“I can promise you, they’re going to be looked after incredibly well. Indian cricketers like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav have fans in Pakistan. Young cricket fans adore them,” the former seamer added.

The speedster concluded by saying that if India comes to Pakistan, it would be great for cricket.

“People-to-people contact is crucial in this day and age. In the social media era, there’s so much unnecessary negativity worldwide, and I think if India comes, it will be fantastic for cricket, and of course, for Pakistan too,” the 58-year-old said.

India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral cricket series since the 2012-13 Pakistan tour of India, owing to tense political relations. All of their matches since then have taken place at major International Cricket Council (ICC) white-ball events and Asia Cup tournaments.

The last Test match between these two Asian giants was held in December 2007 in India. India’s last tour to Pakistan for a bilateral series was in 2006, while their most recent visit to Pakistan was for the Asia Cup in 2008. Recently, Pakistan was scheduled to host the Asia Cup last year in full, but India played its matches in Sri Lanka as part of a hybrid model. The decision on whether India will travel to Pakistan for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy remains pending.

Notably, Australia hosted India and Pakistan for a tri-series back in 1999-2000, where Australia defeated Pakistan in a “best of three” final, winning the first two games.

The most recent encounter between these two nations was during this year’s ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA on July 9, at New York’s Nassau County Stadium. India scored 119/10 after being put to bat first by Pakistan, with Rishabh Pant scoring 42. In response, Jasprit Bumrah’s 3/14 stifled Pakistan’s chase, securing a thrilling six-run win by restricting them to 113/7.

As all-rounder Hardik Pandya continues to recover from the ankle injury he sustained during Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh, Pakistan legend Wasim Akram has said that the Indian squad “looks good” even without the presence of Hardik Pandya. After his injury, Hardik could not take part of the remainder of the match against Bangladesh before he completely missed India’s recent match against New Zealand too. However, the Rohit Sharma-led side went on to win both the matches comfortably.

“This squad looks good even without Pandya. If he is fit then well and good,” Akram told Sportskeeda.

The changes in Indian squad for the New Zealand game saw Mohammed Shami getting to play his first game of the ongoing World Cup. The right-arm pacer cashed in on the opportunity as he returned figures of 5 for 54 in 10 overs.

“It will be difficult to drop Shami now. I feel India shouldn’t risk Pandya (against England) because if it’s an injury to a hamstring or quad, then although you feel good initially, you could pull a muscle in the match. So let him recover 100 percent and then you can play him,” Akram said.

“Credit to the team management that whenever any player in the squad comes into the XI, he seems ready. When Shami’s ball hits the seam, it can deviate either way,” he added.

Shami struck on the first ball of his Cricket World Cup 2023 and never looked back in the game since then.

“It is not easy to come into the World Cup and hit the ground running straight away. He (Shami) is a new ball bowler and sometimes while bowling first-change, you can get emotional and think ‘why didn’t i get the new ball?’ But he has the experience and he made the most of the opportunity that he got to win the game for his country,” said the Pakistan great.

India are set to face England next at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on October 29.

Australia defeated Pakistan in a run-fest at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday. David Warner slammed 163 off 124 while Mitchell Marsh hit 121 off 108 to help Australia post 367 for 9 in 50 overs after getting an invitation to bat. The Pat Cummins-led side managed to post a big total despite Shaheen Afridi‘s five-wicket haul (5 for 54). In reply, Pakistan were bundled out for 305, thanks to Adam Zampa‘s 4 for 53. After the game, legendary Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis made a funny statement while he was addressed as a Pakistani by the presenter while standing with former Australian cricketers Shane Watson and Aaron Finch for post-match analysis.

“I’m a half Aussie, don’t just call me a Pakistani,” said Waqar on Star Sports.

It is worth noting that Waqar is married to a Pakistani-Australian doctor named Faryal. The couple has three kids with the family staying in the Australian town of Castle Hill in New South Wales.

Talking about the World Cup game on Friday, Pakistan were undone by poor bowling and fielding which saw Warner dropped when he had made just 10. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa then ripped through the middle-order with figures of 4-53 as Pakistan were bowled out for 305 in 45.3 overs, leaving both teams on two wins and as many losses.

While it was the second consecutive victory for Australia in the tournament, Babar Azam-led Pakistan suffered their second defeat on trot. The result on Friday thus made the World Cup 2023 points table all more interesting.
