Former Australian cricketer Stuart Clark lauded the partnership between Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy, which helped India recover from a precarious position on Day 3 of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test in Melbourne. When India was struggling at 221/7 on Saturday, Sundar and Reddy’s crucial stand of 127 runs provided much-needed stability to the innings reducing the deficit to 116 runs. Sundar’s gritty knock ended when he edged Nathan Lyon to slip, departing for a well-made 50 off 162 balls, which included just one boundary. Despite his dismissal, the partnership significantly boosted India’s chances in the match.

Stuart Clark commented on the partnership during an interview with ANI, saying, “India has put up a good partnership. Washington and Reddy are batting well. They’re making Australians work hard for their wicket, and it’s making the game interesting because they are getting closer to the Australian score.”

Clark also shared his thoughts on Rishabh Pant’s dismissal earlier in the innings. Reflecting on the incident, he stated, “You gotta take the good with the bad. It was a big issue when it happened because India needed to fight. We’ve seen him play that shot a lot of times and hit it into the crowd as well. You’re gonna get it wrong from time to time, and unfortunately, he got it wrong today…”

As India reached 358/9 at the end of Day 3, trailing by 116 runs, the efforts of Sundar and Reddy have kept them in contention. The match remains finely poised as India looks to close the gap on the Australian total.

Indian batter Nitish Kumar Reddy slammed his maiden international century on Day Three of the Boxing Day Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia on Saturday, bringing India back into the game at Melbourne.

In the final session on the day, Nitish Kumar Reddy, while standing at 99, slammed the ball towards the mid-on fielder for a four and got his maiden international century in style.

The atmosphere at the MCG turned emotional, as Nitish’s father shed tears of joy, while joining hands and thanking God.

Coming to the pavilion after the knock, Nitish was received with appreciation by Australian players and standing ovation from the Indian camp.

Nitish stands unbeaten at 105 runs from 176 balls at a strike rate of 59.66. He slammed 10 fours and 1 six during his time on the crease on Day Three of the Melbourne Test.

With his ton, the youngster also achieved an elusive feat as he became the third youngest Indian batter to get a maiden Test century in Australia after Sachin Tendulkar and Rishabh Pant.

India “Will Continue To Fight”: Washington Sundar After Day 2 Play In Boxing Day Test https://artifex.news/india-will-continue-to-fight-washington-sundar-after-day-2-play-in-boxing-day-test-7343604/ Fri, 27 Dec 2024 11:11:33 +0000 https://artifex.news/india-will-continue-to-fight-washington-sundar-after-day-2-play-in-boxing-day-test-7343604/ Read More “India “Will Continue To Fight”: Washington Sundar After Day 2 Play In Boxing Day Test” »

After the conclusion of play on Day 2 of the Melbourne Test between Australia and India, all-rounder Washington Sundar expressed confidence in the team’s ability to stage a comeback on the third day of the ongoing Boxing Day Test match. The final hour of Day 2 was packed with dramatic twists and turns. Disaster struck the visitors in quick succession late in the day. Jaiswal was run out for 82 after a mix-up with Kohli, who appeared caught ball-watching as both batters ended up at the same end.

The setback seemed to unsettle Kohli’s focus. After a disciplined display of leaving deliveries outside the off stump, he fell to his old nemesis, edging a ball while fishing outside off and departing cheaply.

From a promising 153/2, India slumped to 164/5 by stumps, losing nightwatchman Akash Deep for a duck as well. Rohit Sharma’s side trailed Australia by 310 runs, with 111 more required to avoid the follow-on.

“We will still come back and continue to fight tomorrow morning. The energy is very good in the dressing room. We are all positive. There’s a long time left in the game–three days and a lot of overs to play. It will be just about us trying to fight really hard and get things done for the team. We looked like we were in a good position to get big runs, especially when Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal were batting,” Sundar said in the post-day press conference, as quoted by the ICC.

With three days remaining, all three results are still possible. However, India face an uphill battle to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and keep their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship Final alive.

The playing XI picked by the Indian cricket team for the third Test against Australia has come under harsh criticism. Earlier, former India batter Aakash Chopra criticised the team’s inconsistency with spinners and now ex-India spinner Harbhajan Singh has also talked on the same topic. Notably, India rested both Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the first Test and went ahead with Washington Sundar. In the second game, the Rohit Sharma-led side rested Sundar to make place for Ashwin, while the very next game saw Ashwin being replaced by Jadeja.

When asked about his opinion on constant changes in the team, in reference to Jadeja’s inclusion, Harbhajan termed the team selection ‘unacceptable’.

“If I respond to this question, headlines would be made,” Harbhajan started while answering during his commentary on Star Sports.

“Don’t think what happened was right. Sundar played the first Test but your prime spinners were (R) Ashwin and (Ravindra) Jadeja. You played Sundar but should’ve persisted with him. You dropped him to bring Ashwin in, who didn’t bowl bad by any means. I thought Ashwin or Sundar should’ve been picked for the third Test but Jadeja was picked. It has become a big question for me,” he added.

Notably, Ashwin is the Indian bowler with second-most Test wickets. With the tally of 537, he is behind legendary Anil Kumble (619 wickets) and ahead of great Kapil Dev (434 wickets). Jadeja is not much behind in the list, holding the fifth spot with 319 wickets.

“Maybe they (Team India) don’t trust any spinner. One has over 300 wickets, other over 500 wickets. This team selection isn’t acceptable to me. I wanted to see either Ashwin or Sundar,” said Harbhajan, who holds the fourth spot in the list of India’s highest wicket-takers in Tests with 417 scalps.

“Now that Jadeja has been picked, I hope he plays next match too as chopping on changing would lower the confidence of players,” he concluded.

New Zealand, aided by a career-best seven-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner and a half-century by skipper Tom Latham took a sizeable 301-run lead against an embattled India on day two of the second Test here on Friday. Santner (7/53 in 19.3 overs) demolished India for 156 as New Zealand took a first-innings lead of 103 runs after the visitors had notched up 259 on the opening day. Latham then scored a fine 86 in the second innings and shared fruitful partnerships with Will Young (23) and Tom Blundell (30 batting) to guide New Zealand to 198 for 5 in 53 overs for an overall lead of 301 runs.

Earlier, India’s poor batsmanship saw the team slump to 107 for 7 at lunch. They started the day on a positive note with Shubman Gill (30) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (30) adding 49 for the second wicket before six wickets fell for the addition of 53 runs as the hosts were left struggling at lunch.

Santner then returned in the post-lunch session to dismiss Ravindra Jadeja, Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah cheaply.

Brief scores:

New Zealand – 1st Innings 259 and 198 for 5 in 53 overs (Tom Latham 86, Will Young 23, Tom Blundell 30 not out; Washington Sundar 4/56).

India – 1st Innings 107 for 7 in 38 overs (Shubman Gill 30, Yashasvi Jaiswal 30, Mitchell Santner 7/53, Glenn Phillips 2/26).

India captain Shubman Gill hailed their “remarkable” team effort on a two-paced wicket as they defeated Zimbabwe by 23 runs in third T20I to take a 2-1 lead the five-match series in Harare on Wednesday. The elegant Indian opener returned to form with a 49-ball 66 to power them to 182 for four before the bowlers restricted the hosts to 159 for six. This was India’s second successive win as they bounced back from the first match reversal to snatch the lead.

“It was a crucial match for us and the way we started with batting and bowling, it was remarkable,” Gill said during the post-match presentation.

India made a resounding comeback in the second T20I where they posted a mammoth 234 for 2.

Asked if he was a little disappointed that the team couldn’t reach 200 in the third T20, Gill said: “…the wicket was a bit double paced, the odd ball was gripping and it was not easy to hit the length ball.

“We just wanted to keep hitting the length with the ball as well. We know if there is something in the wicket, it will be there for the bowlers. Everyone has contributed, right from openers, to bowlers.” Washington Sundar, who was adjudged the Player of the Match, was happy with his execution of plan as he returned with a figures of three for 15 in four overs.

“Feels amazing, honestly. Every time I play for the country, it seems amazing. It was a better wicket. There was something more for the bowlers in the first two games.

“The way Zimbabwe batters played, did put pressure on us. They (Myers and Madande) did put a lot of pressure on us. We wanted to execute everything in our plans. We want to finish the series on Saturday.” Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza rued the fielding lapses.

“I think it’s the fielding again, we are proud of our fielding but the wheels came off today, we gave away 20 extra runs and we lost by 23 runs,” he said.

The hosts were 19 for 3 in 4th over but Dion Myers produced an unbeaten 65 from 49 deliveries to give them hope.

“We still have problems at the top but I have utmost faith in them that they will come good some time. We have tried 15 different partners in the last year or so, club has revived, it’s time that our players including myself take up the responsibility.

“You cannot fix a problem by creating another problem, we have picked 3 openers for a reason. The openers that have been picked up should be given a run.” On Blessing Muzarabani, who claimed 2/25, Raza said: “We have to stop talking about him because he has been outstanding, sometimes the rewards don’t come but in the long run the rewards do come.” India will play Zimbabwe in the fourth T20I on Saturday.

An inexperienced yet spirited Zimbabwe pulled off an upset of massive proportions when they stunned an Indian team brimming with an array of Next-Gen stars by 13 runs in the first T20I of the five-match series in Harare on Saturday. India, who were recently crowned champions in the T20 World Cup albeit with a different set of players, were expected to trot past an unfancied Zimbabwe and the script followed that line when the hosts were restricted to 115 for nine.

But from there, Zimbabwe wrote their own narrative, reducing India to 28 for four in the Power Play and then eventually bowled them out for 102 in 19.5 overs.

Pacer Tendai Chatara (3/16) and skipper Sikandar Raza (3/25) led the home side bowling with aplomb.

It was India’s first defeat in T20Is in 2024 and first against Zimbabwe in eight years.

The second match of the series is slated on Sunday.

India’s stutter began in the first over itself, losing Abhishek Sharma, one of three T20I debutants along with Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel, for duck.

Sharma’s almighty cross-batted heave off Brian Benett was caught easily by Wellington Masakadza in the outfield.

But what was perceived as an initial scratch soon turned into a deep gash as India kept losing wickets.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (7) could not negate a slightly bouncier offering from pacer Blessing Muzarabani, edging it to Innocent Kaia at the floating first slip.

Soon, pacer Tendai Chatara dealt a double blow to India, dismissing Parag (2) and Rinku Singh (0) in the space of three balls in the fifth over.

Parag’s over-enthusiastic loft over mid-off could not clear substitute Brandon Mavuta, while Rinku did not have the necessary space to execute pull off a climbing-up delivery.

However, skipper Shubman Gill kept India in the chase with a sensible knock (31, 5×4), but Sikandar Raza accounted for his counterpart with a delivery that skidded past his bat to rattle the stumps.

Avesh Khan (16, 12b) and Washington Sundar (27, 34b) added 23 runs for the eighth wicket to take India to 84 but a full-blooded smash off a Masakadza full-toss was accepted by Raza at long-off.

At 84 for eight and then at 86 for nine, the fight was well and truly over.

India needed 16 runs off the last over and despite Washington being there, they could only manage just two runs as Zimbabwe celebrated a famous win with all fervour.

Before their batters faltered, the Indian bowlers led by leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, performed admirably on a pitch that had a hint of extra bounce and sufficient carry.

Bishnoi returned with a career-best 4/13 and received adequate support from off-spinner Washington (2/11) as Zimbabwe struggled to stitch any meaningful partnership.

However, Zimbabwe made a rather brisk start to their innings, reaching 40 for two in the Power Play segment even though their batters were not always convincing.

After the early dismissal of Kaia, who dragged a Mukesh Kumar delivery onto his stumps, Wessly Madhevere (21, 22b) and Bennett (22, 15b) added 34 runs in quick time.

The highlight of their alliance was the fifth over in which they plundered 17 runs off left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed.

Bennett hammered him for two successive boundaries as Zimbabwe seemed to have recovered from the early loss of Kaia.

But the ouster of Bennett by Bishnoi in the sixth over changed the complexion of Zimbabwe’s innings. Bennett could not read Bishnoi’s googly, which also carried three more Zimbabwe batters to their doom later – Madhevere, Muzarabani and Luke Jongwe.

They crawled to 74 for three from there, courtesy the patience of skipper Raza (17, 19b) but lost their way from that point, losing six wickets for 41 runs.

The hosts’ batters seemed to have slipped into a state of panic, evidenced by the dismissal of Jonathan Campbell, son of former Zimbabwe captain Alastair Campbell.

Campbell pushed an Avesh delivery to the covers and called for a single and his partner Dion Myers responded.

But Campbell changed his mind suddenly and stayed back as Myers crossed the crease, forcing the former to walk back.

Their last hope rested on experienced Raza, and he raised some hope, smashing Avesh for a six over the bowler’s head.

But the extra bounce Avesh generated soon did Raza in as his mis-timed pull ended in the hands of Bishnoi in the deep.

Washington joined the party with two wickets in as many balls, jettisoning Myers (23, 22b) and Wellington Masakadza (0) off consecutive balls.

In the process, the Tamil Nadu man also completed 100 wickets in T20s.

Clive Madande’s cameo (29 not out, 25b) helped Zimbabwe go past the 100-run mark and that proved a tad too many for India this day.
