Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar on Wednesday expressed confidence that spinner Varun Chakaravarthy would bounce back in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Varun conceded a lot of runs in the T20 World Cup and in KKR’s IPL opener against Mumbai Indians (0/48 in four overs) at the Wankhede Stadium the other night.

However, Nayar solidly backed the spinner. “He has gone through a lot more than this. He has accomplished a lot over the past year, which has increased expectations…Statistically, he’s pretty much bowled the similar speeds that he always has.

“Hawkeye suggests he has bowled the same lengths, but sometimes players play you better,” Nayar said on the eve of KKR’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“It (Wankhede) was a pitch that challenged all spinners…and Varun bowls (in) those phases where he’s always going to be challenged. As a franchise, as support staff, we back him. Teams are playing him well. Doesn’t mean he can’t come back. It just means that it’s another challenge in his life.

“At times you want to protect a bowler and bring him at a time where you feel he can be more effective. But the nature of the game is (such) that sometimes you want to put your best players in a position to perform. If he picks up wickets there, he’s a different bowler.”

Nayar said the support staff, including mentor D.J. Bravo and bowling coach Tim Southee, had been working with the less experienced bowlers in the side to bring out the best in them.

Cricket fans around India were left mesmerized after the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) joyously celebrated the 50th anniversary of the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Over the years, this venue has given several memorable moments to fans, including India’s victory in the 2011 ODI World Cup. This has also been the home ground for many legendary cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Rohit Sharma. During the anniversary celebration, Gavaskar gave a visual treat to all the fans with his brilliant dance moves.

In a video going viral, Gavaskar was seen shaking his leg on the famous Bollywood song, “Om Shanti Om,” along with the popular musician and singer Shekhar Ravjiani.

As fans were enjoying Gavaskar’s moves, Shekhar went on and prompted Sachin Tendulkar to sing. Fulfilling his request, the ‘Master Blaster’ sang “Om Shanti Om” for the fans.

The gala concluding evening was graced by Mumbai legends and former and current Indian cricket captains-including Rohit Sharma, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane, and Diana Edulji.

Mumbai’s legendary men’s and women’s players from both domestic and international cricket, were also present. All echoed the significance the stadium has had in shaping their career and India’s overall cricketing journey. The essence of Mumbai’s cricketing legacy that produces talented players year-on-year, also came to the forefront in deliberations among the star players.

Earlier this week, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, sent a letter to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and its fans, congratulating them on the 50th anniversary of Wankhede Stadium.

To mark the occasion, the MCA office-bearers and Apex Council Members released a coffee table book and commemorative stamp celebrating the esteemed legacy of Wankhede Stadium, amidst the presence of cricketing legends and other dignitaries. The evening got even brighter with a photo-op with the ICC Champions Trophy and a cheerful 75th birthday celebration of Sunil Gavaskar.

Sunil Gavaskar, Vinod Kambli Felicitated At Opening Event Of MCA’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations Of Wankhede

Some of Mumbai’s cricketing heroes, including legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar and former player Vinod Kambli, was on Sunday felicitated by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on the opening event of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Wankhede Stadium. The main event will be held on January 19 at the Wankhede Stadium. Gavaskar was the first Mumbai captain to be felicitated on Sunday. He was presented a momento by MCA President Ajinkya Naik. “It is indeed a very big honour for me to be here at this iconic venue that has given Indian cricket so much, the 2011 Cricket World Cup being the icing on the cake. And to be part of the start of the celebrations of 50 years of Wankhede Stadium,” Gavaskar said.

“As an opening batter, I couldn’t miss the start so I am here. I want to wish the MCA all the best and also want to express my deepest sense of gratitude for giving me opportunities since school cricket.

“I am what I am because MCA lifted me and helped me to take those steps and subsequently supported me even when I was playing for India…I want to thank you all for having me here.” Former India batter Vinod Kambli, who was recently discharged from a local hospital after being admitted to the ICU on December 21 due to health complications, was also present on the occasion. He was seen escorted by other people as he is still recovering from his ailments.

After his felicitation, Kambli spoke about his playing days at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

“I remember I smashed my first double hundred here against England and then went onto score many more hundreds in my career,” he said.

“If anyone wants to play for India like me or Sachin (Tendulkar), then I would advise that you should keep working hard and never leave doing that because that’s what Sachin and me did since our childhood days.” Former India opening batter Wasim Jaffer was seen greeting Kambli. Former MCA President Vijay Patil was also felicitated.

Other cricketing legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma and Dilip Vengsarkar will also be part of the MCA’s grand celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Wankhede Stadium.

The other stalwarts who are expected on the occasion are former India skippers Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane, current T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav and former national women’s team captain Diana Edulji.

The main event will also feature Mumbai’s legendary men’s and women’s players from domestic and international cricket.

The MCA will release a coffee table book on January 19, while a commemorative postal stamp will also be issued.

MCA will also felicitate the groundsmen and members of the Mumbai team, which played the first first-class match at the Wankhede Stadium in 1974.

Team India’s Bold Decision On Mumbai Pitch After Going 0-2 Down Against New Zealand

Trailing New Zealand 0-2, the Indian cricket team is gearing up for the third Test against the Kiwis at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, with nothing but a win in sight. Though the series has been lost, India are eyeing nothing less than a victory in Mumbai to boost their World Test Championship final hopes. However, a big change is expected to take place as far as the nature of the pitch is concerned as the two teams square off in the final encounter of the series.

Spinners have dominated proceedings in the first two matches of the series, generating turn from the first day itself. However, the Wankhede pitch is expected to be much different, offering a lot more to the batters on Day 1.

According to a report in the Times of India, a ‘sporting track’ has been laid in Mumbai which will also have some grass on it. Spinners aren’t expected to generate turn before the second day’s play.

“It will be a sporting track. Right now, there’s a bit of grass on the pitch. It’s expected to be good for batting on Day 1 but should offer turn to spinners from Day 2,” the paper quoted a source as saying.

What happened when India last played a Test against New Zealand at Wankhede?

India last featured in a Test match against New Zealand at Wankhede in Dec 2021. The match saw the hosts beat the Kiwis comprehensively by 372 runs, bowling them out for 62 and 167 on a pitch that offered quality assistance to spinners.

India, on the other hand, registered scores of 325 and 276/7 declared in the two innings. Ravichandran Ashwin claimed a whopping 8 wickets in the match across two innings for 42 runs. New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel re-wrote history books as he produced figures of 10/ 119 in the first innings before adding 4 more wickets to his tally for 104 runs in the second innings.

The T20 World Cup-winning Team India lit up the iconic Wankhede Stadium with Mumbai, not with their performances with the bat and ball, but their energetic, fun dance moves during the celebrations of the team’s triumph on Thursday.

Following their meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, the players departed for Mumbai. In Mumbai, the Men in Blue had an open bus victory parade from Marine Drive to the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The parade was an affair to remember and marvel at, as thousands of fans gathered at Marine Drive and surrounded the bus before it could even get Indian players on it.

The team went to Wankhede amid cheers, chants, and claps from passionate fans. At the Wankhede, they were felicitated with the prize money of Rs 125 crore by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office-bearers. Players also talked about their win, and the performances of key players in the T20 World Cup inside a jam-packed Wankhede and danced their hearts out. The event also featured the players taking a victory lap to the tune of the country’s national song, ‘Vande Mataram’.

“Someone Catcalls Your Young Daughter…”: Ex-KKR Official On Shah Rukh Khan’s Outburst At Wankhede

The Kolkata Knight Riders face Mumbai Indians in an IPL 2024 match at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday. While KKR are sitting comfortably in the second spot with 12 points from nine games, MI are at the ninth spot in the 10-team table with six points from 10 games. KKR, Wankhede Stadium and KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan have a bit of a history. Shah Rukh was banned from entering the Wankhede in May 2012 after a scuffle and heated altercation with a security guard and the MCA officials following an IPL game in which Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat the Mumbai Indians.

After the 2012 IPL game between KKR and Mumbai Indians, a police complaint was registered against the Bollywood superstar for voluntarily causing hurt and for intimidation. However, since it was a non-cognizable offence, SRK wasn’t arrested.

Shah Rukh Khan though, said that he was provoked after security guards touched a group of children he was accompanying, which included his daughter.

Shah Rukh Khan’s five-year ban on entering the Wankhede Stadium was officially lifted by the Mumbai Cricket Association in 2015.

Now, ex-KKR team team director Joy Bhattacharjya opened up on the issue on Friday. Commenting on a post on the incident, Bhattacharjya wrote: “The last time KKR beat MI at the Wankhede, I was still a part of that dugout. It’s been a while, but today might just be the day! KKR won two championships after that incident. And he did not abuse, I was there. And the next time, stay calm when someone cat calls your young daughter.”

In a recent conversation with the host broadcaster, Star Sports, Shah Rukh spoke highly of Rishabh Pant, revealing that he was ‘horrified’ after learning of the near-fatal car crash involving the former. “That was horrifying. I saw that video (of his car). It was horrifying! Because we didn’t know then, what was the result of that accident. So, you get the worst feelings. To me, these boys are like my own sons. I have youngsters in my team as well. I hoped he wasn’t injured badly,” SRK said in a video shared on KKR’s social media handle.

“And a sportsman getting injured, it’s a double jeopardy. Worse than that, us getting injured. I wish him all the best. I hope his knee gets fully recovered soon,” the actor added.

The numerous world records, including most international runs and centuries, is only one part of the Sachin Tendulkar’s greatness. The respect that he commanded from his fellow teammates and rivals is a testament to his impact. Sachin Tendulkar got a fitting reward for his persistence when the Indian cricket team won 2011 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium, with the superstar being part of the team.

Now, Sachin Tendulkar’s life-sized statue has unveiled at the Wankhede Stadium on the eve of India’s World Cup clash against Sri Lanka.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) President Amol Kale, Rajya Sabha member Sharad Pawar, and Sachin’s wife Anjali Tendulkar, daughter Sara Tendulkar, and brother Ajit Tendulkar were present during the unveiling of the statue.

The statue is dedicated to 50 years of Tendulkar’s life and has been installed by the MCA near Sachin Tendulkar Stand at the stadium, and it was unveiled today.

Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary, team India’s supporter and a fan of Sachin, was also present during the ceremony. He blew a conch shell and waved the Indian flag.

Sachin is considered as the greatest batter to have played the game. With 34,357 runs in 664 international appearances at an average of 48.52, Sachin is the highest run-scorer in international cricket. He has scored 100 centuries and 164 half-centuries, most in international cricket. He is the only player to have a century of centuries.

With 18,426 runs in ODIs and 15,921 runs in Tests, Sachin also has the highest runs in both formats. He is the first player to hit an ODI double hundred and to have played 200 Test matches.

He also has 201 international wickets to his name, making him a very useful part-time spin bowling option. With a total of 664 international appearances, he is the most-capped player of all time. He is part of the Indian Team which won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011.

Sachin has played six IPL seasons from 2008-2013, all for Mumbai Indians, where he has scored a total of 2334 runs in 78 matches at an average of 34.84. Sachin has 13 fifties and one hundred under his belt, hitting 29 sixes and 295 fours with a strike rate of 119.82. He won the 2013 edition of the tournament with the franchise as a player.

Sachin’s best performance came in IPL 2010. He scored 618 runs in 15 matches at an average of 47.53 at a strike rate of 132.61. He scored five fifties that season and his best individual score was 89*. He won the ‘Orange Cap’ that season. MI finished as runners-up that season.
