The Boise State women’s volleyball team have withdrawn from the Mountain West Conference tournament, alleging that their opponent, San Jose State University (SJSU), had a transgender athlete on their roster. The championship finals started on Wednesday (Nov 27) in Las Vegas as Boise State qualified for the semis after beating Utah State in the quarter-finals. However, the team refused to play against SJSU after a court ruling allowed Blaire Fleming, the transgender athlete in question, to compete in the tournament.

“The decision to not continue to play in the 2024 Mountain West Volleyball Championship tournament was not an easy one,” Boise State said in a statement.

“Our team overcame forfeitures to earn a spot in the tournament field and fought for the win over Utah State in the first round on Wednesday. They should not have to forgo this opportunity while waiting for a more thoughtful and better system that serves all athletes,” it added.

Notably, it is not the first time when Boise State have forfeited their matches against SJSU. During the regular season, the team refused to play them on two occasions as other Mountain West teams such as Wyoming, Utah State and Nevada followed suit.

SJSU advance

Boise State’s refusal to play means that SJSU have moved unopposed to the tournament final, scheduled to take place on Saturday where the winner of top-seeded Colorado State and No. 5 San Diego State will potentially square off against them.

Reacting to Boise State’s stance, SJSU released a statement saying they were ‘disappointed’ with the decision but added that their team was preparing for the championship final.

“In this time of Thanksgiving, we are especially thankful for those who continue to engage in civil and respectful discourse. We celebrate and support all of our students, including our student-athletes as they compete for our community on this holiday weekend,” SJSU told CNN.

Earlier this week, US District Judge S Kato Crews delivered a judgment allowing Ms Fleming to play in the tournament after several opposing players as well as Fleming’s teammates filed a lawsuit against the team and the tournament organisers for allowing the transgender athlete to play in the women’s tournament.

The plaintiffs claimed that university and conference officials violated their Title IX rights, which ensures that men and women are treated fairly in educational settings, including collegiate sports.

The Indian women’s volleyball team started their campaign at the Asian Games on a disappointing note, losing 1-3 to North Korea in their opening match in Hangzhou on Saturday. India won the first set but failed to continue the momentum and lost to North Korea 25-23, 22-25, 17-25, and 16-25 in a Pool A match that lasted one hour and 53 minutes at the Deqing Sports Centre in Gymnasium.  North Korea’s Hyonju Kim emerged as the star performer, scoring a maximum of 30 points, while India’s Soorya scored a maximum of 18 points in the match.

India will face world no. 6 China in their next pool match on Sunday.

Indian men’s team ended its campaign at the sixth place.

Pincky Balhara knocked out in quarterfinals of Kurash

India’s Pincky Balhara, a silver medallist at Jakarta meet in 2018, was knocked out in the women’s 52kg quarterfinals of the kurash competition at the Asian Games on Saturday.

Pincky lost to Sitora Elmurodova of Uzbekistan after the final appraisal by the referee went in favour of the latter.

Earlier, the 24-year-old Pincky overcame South Korea’s Joo Ye Lee 5-3 in her pre-quarterfinals bout at the Linpu Gymnasium to reach the round of eight.

In the round of 32, Pincky defeated Ayshirin Haydarova 5-0.

The other Indians in the fray too were knocked out of the Asian Games.

Suchika Tariyal, who was also competing in the women’s 52kg category, was knocked out in the round of 32 itself.

Suchika lost to Philippine’s Charmea Quelino 3-8.

Keshav, who contested in the men’s 66kg, too went out of the competition.

The Indian was blanked 0-10 by South Korea’s Jaedeog Kwon.

India will now hope that Vishal Ruhil (81kg), Yash Kumar Chauhan (90kg) and Jyoti Tokas (87kg) will bring better fortunes on Sunday.

The 33-year-old Suchika is a five-time national champion in Judo but turned to Kurash after finding that her weight category was not included in Asian Games.

“I’ve played in the World Cup, world championships, Asian Championships and even the Comonwealth Games last year (at Birmingham 2022). My weight category is not part of the Asian Games in judo, which is what made me change my sport,” she said.

On training with Pincky, she said: “I was training with her even in the camp before the Asian Games. We have been training together for a few years before as well.

“I do want to return to judo and continue playing both sports. There’s no time or limit to the number of sports you can play or want to play.  “I don’t feel like leaving one sport for the other, I want to continue trying. I want to take the sport of kurash forward in India.”

The Indian men’s volleyball team will take on arch-rivals Pakistan in the fifth-place playoff at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China on Tuesday. According to Olympics.com, the match between India and Pakistan will start at 4:00 PM Indian Standard Time (IST). Both India and Pakistan volleyball teams topped their respective groups and beat higher-ranked opponents in the final 12 stages. However, both bowed out of the medal race with quarter-final losses. In the quarter-finals, world No. 73 India stretched world No. 5 Japan but lost 3-0. Indian setter Muthusamy Appavu and middle blocker Ashwal Rai troubled Asia’s top-ranked side with their performance but could not help India upset Japan.

Earlier, India had stunned the higher-ranked Chinese Taipei in the final 12 after wins over 2018 silver medallists Republic of Korea and Cambodia in their group.

Meanwhile, world No. 51 Pakistan did not drop a set in their wins over Chinese Taipei, South Korea and Mongolia but fell short against Qatar 3-1 in the quarter-finals.

The Indian men’s volleyball team has won three medals at the Asian Games – one silver in 1962 and bronze medals in 1958 and 1986. Pakistan’s solitary medal, a bronze, came in 1962.

India and Pakistan also met in the 7-12 classification match at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, in which India lost 3-1.

Asian Games: India beat Cambodia 3-0 in volleyball© Twitter

India put up a dominant performance to outclass Cambodia 3-0 in their opening match of the men’s volleyball competition at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Tuesday. India comfortably defeated lower-ranked Cambodia 25-14, 25-13, 25-19 in a Pool C match. But a stern test await India on Wednesday as they are up against world No.27 South Korea, the other team in Pool C. A total of 19 teams are participating in men’s volleyball at the Hangzhou Games. Japan, China and South Korea are regarded as the three major powerhouses of the competition.

While Japan has secured 27 podium finishes with 16 golds in men’s volleyball at the Asian Games, China follows closely behind with 11 golds and Korea is on the third spot with five gold medals.

Men’s volleyball was first introduced at the Tokyo Asian Games in 1958, where India secured a third position.

The Indian men have won a total of three volleyball medals so far. Their best performance came in 1962 when they were runners-up. India’s other two medals were bronze won in 1958 and 1986, the last of which came 37 years ago.
