Former India batter Virender Sehwag has backed the team management’s decision to appoint youngster Shubman Gill as captain for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe. Gill will lead an inexperienced squad against Zimbabwe in what could be the first series for the new Indian head coach. India captain Rohit Sharma, star batter Virat Kohli and a host of other senior players have been rested for the T20I tour. Sharing his views on Gill’s appoitment as captain, Sehwag suggested that the youngster is the prime candidate to take up the mantle permanently whenever Rohit steps down.

“Shubman Gill is for the long haul. He’s a player who plays all three formats. He’s had a great last year. He was unlucky to miss out on the 2024 T20 World Cup. According to me, it is the right decision to make him the captain. When Rohit Sharma leaves tomorrow, Shubman Gill will be his right replacement for captaincy,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

The squad features just two players from the main squad for the T20 World Cup: Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson. The rest of the squad who are part of T20 WC has been rested.

The likes of Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed who are in the reserves player list of the T20 World Cup touring party, also have been added to the squad.

Promising young players who have proven themselves in the Indian Premier League and domestic arena over the past 12 months have received multiple call-ups from India.

Aside from the familiar international names, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, Riyan Parag and Tushar Deshpande received maiden call-ups on the back of their impressive IPL campaigns.

The first match of the five-game series will be played on July 6 at the Harare Sports Club and the second will be held at the same venue the next day. The last T20I will be played on July 14 at Harare Sports Club.

India’s squad for T20I series against Zimbabwe: duhubman Gill (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Nitish Reddy, Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar and Tushar Deshpande.

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag slammed a question asked by the media to Rohit Sharma, ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final against England in Guyana. After India’s win over Australia in the Super 8 stage, Pakistan legend Inzamam-ul-Haq had raised suspicion over possible ball tampering by India. The reason behind his doubt was that Arshdeep Singh was able to create reverse as early as the 15th over. While Rohit Sharma denied any wrongdoing, former India vice-captain Sehwag criticised such questions being asked to the players.

“It is not the job of a reporter to quote someone and ask others for their opinion,” said Sehwag, speaking on Cricbuzz.

“This is wrong. Do you not have a question of your own?” said Sehwag.

Sehwag said that such questions are of no help to the players, and are only useful in stirring controversies.

“You’re trying to create controversy. If I were there, I wouldn’t have replied at all,” said Sehwag.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma had completely denied any ball tampering from India, instead suggesting that it is important for critics to be “open-minded”.

“You are playing in the heat, the wicket is dry, the ball reverses automatically. It happens for all the teams. It’s important to open your mind,” said a disappointed Rohit, in response to the allegation by Inzamam.

India have been in tremendous form at the 2024 T20 World Cup, and are yet to lose a game. Supporters and fans would be hoping that the end result does not turn out like the 2023 ODI World Cup Final.

Rohit Sharma returned to his explosive best against Australia, smashing 92 off just 41 balls.

India take on England at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, where rain is expected to be 90%. In the case of a washed out match, India will qualify for the final on June 29, by virtue of finishing higher in the Super 8.

South Africa are awaiting the winner of the India-England clash.

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag criticised Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s approach in the 197-run chase against India as they suffered a 50-run defeat in the T20 World Cup Super Eight clash on Saturday. After being asked to bat first, Hardik Pandya hammered an unbeaten 50 off 27 balls studded with four fours and three sixes while Virat Kohli scored 37 to guide India to 196/5 in 20 overs. In response, Bangladesh faltered in the middle overs after a decent start as they lost wickets at regular intervals and failed to get over the line. Shakib departed after scoring 11 off seven balls while trying to hit Kuldeep Yadav to a boundary.

Kuldeep bagged three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh clinched two scalps each to restrict Bangladesh to 146/8 in 20 overs.

“When you have a set batter with you at the crease, at least support him. At least stay out in the middle and spend some time, try to get something out of the match. Instead, only 11 runs were scored off seven deliveries and then he walked back. So, I did not understand that,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

The veteran batter added that Shakib should announce his retirement and pave the way for the youngsters in the side.

“He has so much experience. So, is he not making the most of it or does he simply not care? Or was he thinking that the target is too big and I just scored a six, and now I will score a six off every ball. That’s why I said it the last time itself, he needs to make way for a younger player now,” Sehwag added.

With two losses in Super Eight matches, Bangladesh are all but out of the semifinal race. They will take on Afghanistan in their last match on June 25.

T20 World Cup: Babar Azam’s form for Pakistan has not been great.© AFP

When Pakistan entered the T20 World Cup 2024, the signs were already there. Unimpressive displays against Ireland and England in two successive T20I series meant that Pakistan’s form going into the T20 World Cup was not ideal. Still Pakistan often have the habit of springing a surprise when they are least expected to – like at the 2027 Champions Trophy or the 2022 T20 World cup. This time, however, it was different. Pakistan were stunned in their first match by debutants USA and then lost to India despite being in a comfortable position.

In the third game, they beat Canada but in their fourth match, Pakistan were given a massive scare by Ireland as they went seven dwoin in chase of 107, before managing to win by three wickets.

Babar Azam stayed unbeaten on 32 off 34. Indian cricket great Virender Sehwag said that if a new captain is appointed for Pakistan’s T20I team, Babar does not deserve a plave in the side.

“Babar Azam is not a player who will hit sixes. He only hits sixes when he is set and spinners are operating. I have never seen him using his feet to fast bowlers or hitting sixes over the covers; it’s not his game as he plays safe cricket by hitting down the ground. So, he consistently scores runs and his strike-rate isn’t great,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

“But as a leader you have to think whether this game is useful for his team. If not, then demote yourself and send someone who can play big shots in the six overs and get the team 50–60 runs. I may sound harsh, but if the captain changes, Babar doesn’t deserve a place in the T20 team. His performances and strike-rate are not as per the demands of today’s T20 cricket.”

Former India batter Virender Sehwag has lashed out Pakistan amid criticism over the Babar Azam-led side’s Elimination from the T20 World Cup. Despite Pakistan bowing out with a win in their final group game against Ireland, Sehwag questioned the team’s future. After restricting Ireland to 106/9, Pakistan too had difficulties while chasing as they lost seven wickets before captain Babar Azam played a composed knock to see the side through. While analysing the match, Sehwag questioned Pakistan’s approach while chasing small totals against relatively weaker teams.

“We didn’t think that (Ireland) would reach 106 runs and we also didn’t think that Pakistan would take 19 overs to chase that down. What have Pakistan done here, I don’t get it. Yes, they won but first they let them go from 32/6 to 106 and then it wasn’t like it was a very difficult wicket or that Ireland’s bowling was so good that you had to play so carefully in the chase,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

After Pakistan’s exit from the tournament last week, reports have been rampant that the team’s performance have been affected due to groupism within the team.

The reports claimed that Babar, who was re-appointed as skipper, wasn’t able to unite the players, with Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan also happy.

Sharing his views on the same, Sehwag questioned the dressing room culture of the team, blasting the players for putting personal interests before the team.

“This is why we call them unpredictable, you can never if they will play well or poorly. In this World Cup they have been poor more often. I don’t know what their dressing room is like. If things are fine between the players. That also plays a role.

“If there are players who are unhappy with the captain or if there are two or three groups within the dressing room and so on, that also plays a role, but I say you have to keep those things to the side and think for Pakistan. This match shouldn’t have gone on for so long. But fine, at least they won it,” he added.

Former Bangladesh cricket team batter Imrul Kayes blasted Virender Sehwag for his comments on Shakib Al Hasan over his poor run of form in the T20 World Cup 2024. The legendary India batter was extremely critical of Shakib after he failed to perform in Bangladesh’s loss against South Africa. He went on to say that Shakib should have retired from the game after the last World Cup and even asked him to remember that he is a Bangladeshi batter and he should play accordingly. In a recent interview, Kayes expressed his displeasure at the comments and said that as Sehwag did not receive any respect during his cricketing career, he believes that ex-India star does not know how to give respect to others.

“I don’t know how a legendary cricketer like him thinks when he says such things. You won’t see Sachin-Dravid talking like this because they give that respect to players. Since he didn’t get that respect in his career, he doesn’t know how to give that respect to other players.” Imrul told CricFrenzy.

“Different countries’ cricketers evaluate other countries’ cricketers differently. Virender Sehwag has made such comments throughout his career. He has also made such comments about our country, saying we don’t have an environment suitable for cricket, and that we don’t have the ability to take 20 wickets in Test cricket. But we did take those wickets,” the former Bangladesh cricketer added.

Imrul also praised Shakib Al Hasan for his achievements and said that he believes “such cricketers should be spoken about with respect”.

“Shakib did not become Shakib Al Hasan in one or two days. If you look at his career, you will see many achievements. He has been the number one all-rounder in all three formats for a long time. I think such cricketers should be spoken about with respect,” he concluded.

MS Dhoni is one of the greats of the Indian Premier League. Whenever the name of Dhoni is taken in the tournament, the franchise Chennai Super Kings also comes along with it quite often than not. This is because Dhoni has played for the side since the inception of the league in 2008. He has featured for CSK throughout IPL, barring the two seasons in 2016 and 2017 when the side was banned. During his long stint with the team, Dhoni also led the side to record-equalling five IPL titles. Be it from the CSK franchise or its fans, the player has earned immense love and respect.

However, former India opener Virender Sehwag has made an intriguing revelation. While speaking to Fever FM, he said that Dhoni was not the first-choice captain for the franchise. According to Sehwag, VB Chandrashekhar, who was man-in-charge to buy players for CSK ahead of the inaugural IPL season, had approached him.

“VB Chandrashekhar was selecting the players for CSK. He phone-called me and said, ‘We want you to play for CSK. Delhi Daredevils want you to be their icon. Don’t accept the offer’. I was like, fine, we will see,” said Sehwag.

“Finally, I received the offer from Delhi Daredevils to be their icon player and I accepted it. I didn’t go into the auction. If I were a part of the auction, CSK would’ve bought me and made me the captain of the side. But then, they bought MS Dhoni and made him the captain,” Sehwag said.

Sehwag joined Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and played six seasons for the side before moving to Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) ahead of IPL 2024. He played two editions of the new side and then hanged up his boots.

Lucknow Super Giants found themselves in the headlines during IPL 2024 following owner Sanjiv Goenka’s fiery chat with skipper KL Rahul after their huge loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad. LSG were completely outplayed by SRH as openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head chased down a 166-run target in just 9.4 overs. Goenka was not happy with his team’s performance and his animated conversation with Rahul and head coach Justin Langer soon became a topic of discussion among fans and experts. Former India batter Virender Sehwag weighed in on the incident and said that team owners should refrain from getting angry with players or backroom staff who work on the pitch.

“The owner’s role should be that when they meet the players in the dressing room or during a press meet, they should only talk to motivate them. But if the owner comes and asks – ‘What is going on? What’s the problem?’ or gets hold of one of the team management members and starts to raise questions about a particular player…see the coaches and the captain run the team, so it is better for these owners not to get involved with players or get angry with me,” he said on Cricbuzz.

Sehwag, who was the mentor for Punjab Kings from 2016 to 2018, was not pleased with how Goenka behaved and he also said that he will be earning a profit irrespective of what happens.

“These are all businessmen. They only understand profit and loss. But here, there is no loss, so what’s bothering them? You are earning a 400-crore profit. I mean, this is a business where you have to do nothing at all. You have guys to take care of that, and irrespective of what happens, you are earning profit. So your work should only be to motivate the players. What happens is that the player will think that there are other franchises in the IPL, if I leave, someone else will take me. And if you lose a player, your chances of winning are zero. When I left Punjab, they were fifth. They never came fifth in any other seasons,” he said.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag slammed Mumbai Indians’ (MI) batting duo Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav for taking too long to get set and then giving their wicket away without making any significant contribution in the IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders. In a rain affected encounter which was reduced to a 16 over game between the two historical powerhouses of the IPL on Saturday, Rohit scored 19 off 24 while managed to record 11 off 14 after MI started their chase of 158 strongly with Ishan Kishan giving the side a good start with his 40 off 22 balls.

“Whoever bowls good, just play him out. If two wickets hadn’t fallen, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav could’ve finished the match an over before. Vaibhav Arora, Mitchell Starc, Andre Russell and Harshit Rana had to ball anyway; if they played out the spinners and didn’t lose the wickets, they would’ve won the game. You can’t have an ego when you come out to bat. You play them out or punish the loose deliveries,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Two early wickets in the first innings saw the KKR struggle early in the game. The Mumbai bowling attack faltered as the game went on with Venkatesh Iyer being the main man with the bat. Nitish Rana, Andre Russell, Rinku Singh & Ramandeep Singh all provided small yet explosive contributions to take Kolkata’s score to 157/7.

In response, Tilak Varma’s 32 runs off 17 balls went in vain as there were no real contributions by the middle order with Hardik Pandya, Tim David and Nehal Wadhera all combining for five runs. Naman Dhir’s 17 runs off 6 balls gave the fans a glimmer of hope but it was not enough as MI only managed to score 139 in the chase.

“Naman Dhir came right at the end and smashed two sixes and a four; if Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav were set at that time, they would’ve hit 5 balls for boundaries. You could be Rohit Sharma or Suryakumar Yadav, but at least respect the delivery if you can’t respect the bowler. The ball on which Rohit Sharma got out wasn’t a weak ball. No doubt Rohit and Suryakumar are great players, but that doesn’t mean you should hit the good deliveries, too,” concluded Sehwag.

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have had one of the worst IPL seasons since the start of the tournament this year. The Hardik Pandya-led side is already out of the playoff race. Since the start, when Hardik Pandya was named the skipper, things have gone downhill for the side. In the midst of this, former Indian cricket team star Virender Sehwag had a piece of interesting advice for MI management ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction. He took two names that should be on top priority for MI to be retained. And they are not Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma.

“If you get Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan for one movie, it doesn’t mean it will be a hit film. You have to perform. There has to be something in the script. Look at these big names…they all have to perform. Rohit scored one hundred and it was in a losing cause. In the remaining matches, when did he perform? Ishan Kishan has not gone beyond the powerplay the entire season. So the only two players who are certain are Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav. If they have a third and a fourth, we’ll see,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Manoj Tiwary, who was also part of the panel alongside Sehwag, said: “I don’t think Rohit Sharma himself wants to be retained.” To which, the anchor then cheekily said: “I think somebody saw a viral video”.

The discussion then veered towards a video involving Rohit Sharma and KKR’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar.  In the video, Rohit and Nayar could be heard talking about ‘things changing’. At the end of the video, the former Mumbai Indians skipper also said that “it’s his last”. Though the context of the conversation isn’t known, fans suggested that the two could’ve talked about the current situation at Mumbai Indians, especially Hardik Pandya’s appointment as skipper.

“Ek ek cheez change ho raha hai…Woh unke upar hai…Jo bhi hai woh mera ghar hai bhai, woh temple jo hai na maine banwaya hai(Everything is changing one by one… It’s on them… Whatever, but it’s my home brother, it’s the temple that I constructed).”

The last line that could be heard in the video was: “Bhai mera kya mera to ye last hai (brother, this is my last anyway)”.

The video has been deleted by KKR from its handles but has gone viral.
