Gautam Gambhir was named the new Indian cricket team head coach after Rahul Dravid‘s tenure came to an end following the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. Gambhir, who was the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, is all set to take charge of the team during the upcoming ODI and T20Is series in Sri Lanka. Along with his appointment, BCCI made it clear that a new support staff will also be announced in the near future. In the official release, BCCI thanked batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T. DIlip for their services and wished them luck for the future.

“The Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Mr Ashok Malhotra, Mr Jatin Paranjpe and Ms Sulakshana Naik on Tuesday unanimously recommended Mr Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach of Team India (Senior Men). The former India batter will take charge from the upcoming away series against Sri Lanka where Team India are set to play 3 ODIs & 3 T20Is starting July 27, 2024.”

“The BCCI had invited applications for the said position on May 13th to appoint Mr Rahul Dravid’s successor, whose term got over after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024.”

“The Board would like to take this opportunity to express its heartfelt gratitude to Mr Dravid for his outstanding service as Head Coach. Dravid’s tenure was marked by significant achievements; the most noteworthy being crowned champions of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024. Team India also finished as runners-up in the ICC 50-over World Cup, 2023 hosted in India & the ICC World Test Championship in 2023 hosted in England.”

“Apart from the team’s dominance in bilateral series at home, Dravid’s dedication to nurturing young talent and instilling discipline and sportsmanship in the team has been exemplary.”

“The Board also congratulates Mr Paras Mhambrey (Bowling Coach), Mr T. Dilip (Fielding Coach) and Mr Vikram Rathour (Batting Coach) on a highly successful tenure. The BCCI values their contribution and wishes them the best going forward.”

“The BCCI welcomes Gautam Gambhir in his role with Team India. The former Indian opener brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the game. Known for his exceptional batting prowess and strategic acumen, Gambhir has been a pivotal figure in Indian cricket.”

“His remarkable contributions to the Indian team that include crucial performances in the 2007 ICC World T20 and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, have cemented his legacy as one of the sport’s greats. Gambhir also led his IPL franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two title victories in 2012 and 2014. In his role as mentor with KKR in 2024, Gambhir helped the team secure its third IPL title.”

“In his new role as Head Coach of Team India, Gambhir will be responsible for overseeing the development and performance of the Indian cricket team. His focus will be on developing a culture of excellence, discipline, and teamwork, while also nurturing young talent and preparing the team for future challenges on the global stage,” the official press release from BCCI stated.

“I’m Not Happy”: India Coach’s Blockbuster Take On Virat Kohli’s Lean T20 World Cup Run https://artifex.news/im-not-happy-india-coachs-blockbuster-take-on-virat-kohlis-lean-t20-world-cup-run-5941212/ Sat, 22 Jun 2024 01:53:30 +0000 https://artifex.news/im-not-happy-india-coachs-blockbuster-take-on-virat-kohlis-lean-t20-world-cup-run-5941212/ Read More ““I’m Not Happy”: India Coach’s Blockbuster Take On Virat Kohli’s Lean T20 World Cup Run” »

Virat Kohli has been “challenged” in the ongoing T20 World Cup but his lean run is allowing the less experienced players to step up and contribute to the team’s cause, India batting coach Vikram Rathour said on Friday. India outplayed Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval here on Thursday to make a perfect start to their Super 8s campaign. However, Kohli was tested once again in the powerplay and ended up with a run-a-ball 24, his first double digit score in the tournament.

“I’m not happy. I would love it if he gets going and scores more runs,” Rathour said when asked about the team’s unbeaten run in the event without Kohli’s contribution.

“But yeah, it is good when you are challenged at times. You know, the guys who are not getting too much of batting in India sometimes, they are the ones who put up scores today and our middle-order came to play. So, it was good to see,” he said.

Rishabh Pant was impressive while Suryakumar Yadav took the game away from Afghanistan with a sublime fifty.

India will play Bangladesh in Antigua on Saturday. The squad has four spinners and considering the conditions in the Caribbean, it makes the team stronger.

“We’ve always had depth as a team, I believe. But yeah, these conditions maybe suit us more because we can afford to play two or three spinners at times. So that I believe can be our best team. That is our strength.

“It feels like…somebody like Axar (Patel) playing at eight gives you a lot of confidence because he can bat and he’s bowling really well at the moment. So, it does give you a lot of options,” he said.

The former India opener also expected the conditions in the Caribbean to be much better than they were in New York where India played three games.

“We already played in the worst possible conditions in New York. So, anything after that is feeling good only. So, I am expecting wickets to be better (here),” said Rathour.

Bangladesh are coming into the game after a loss to Australia and are one of the easier teams in the tournament.

But Rathour said India will not leave anything to chance.

“They’re a good unit. They have a lot of guys who can spin the ball and they are good in certain conditions. And these conditions do suit them a little as a team I think because the wickets seem to have a bit of help for the spinners and they do have spinners in their team.

“But again, in this format I think every team is a tough team. I don’t believe any contest in T20 cricket is an easy contest,” he added.

Indian cricket team batting coach Vikram Rathour said that batter KL Rahul is not fit at the moment but he was unsure about his exact condition and added that the medical team will be able to advise on his availability in the future. Rahul played the first Test in the five-match series but was ruled out of the next two games due to his quadriceps injury. There were reports that he may make a return for the fourth match in Ranchi starting Friday but the BCCI said that he was not fit. Rathour was asked about his situation in the pre-match press conference on Thursday and the India coach had a clear answer.

“For me either he is fit or he is not. At the moment he is not fit. I am not sure what percent he is fit at the moment and what is the stage,” Rathour told reporters in the press conference.

“I am not sure, the medical team will be able to advise that but as far as we are concerned he is not fit and not available for this game, so we are focusing on this team,” he added.

Meanwhile, England Cricket Board (ECB) on Thursday announced their playing eleven for the fourth Test match against India in Ranchi with Ollie Robinson and Shoaib Bashir coming into the side for the Three Lions.

In a statement released by the ECB, England announced that Rehan Ahmed and Mark Wood have not been included in the side to make space for Robinson and Bashir.

“The Three Lions have made two changes with Ollie Robinson and Shoaib Bashir coming into the side for Rehan Ahmed and Mark Wood,” the statement stated.

Apart from the two changes, England kept the rest of the playing eleven the same as the last Test match in Rajkot.

“There Are Cracks”: India Coach’s Honest Review Of Pitch For Ranchi Test https://artifex.news/there-are-cracks-india-coachs-honest-review-of-pitch-for-ranchi-test-5105414/ Thu, 22 Feb 2024 10:14:13 +0000 https://artifex.news/there-are-cracks-india-coachs-honest-review-of-pitch-for-ranchi-test-5105414/ Read More ““There Are Cracks”: India Coach’s Honest Review Of Pitch For Ranchi Test” »

India batting coach Vikram Rathour on Thursday said the Ranchi wicket hosting the fourth Test against England has “enough cracks” and would favour the spinners but insisted they have enough firepower to cope with any condition. India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been the top-wickettaker of the series but he would be missing the fourth Test after being given a break to manage his workload. The move has led many to believe that India will go for a rank turner for the fourth Test beginning on Friday.

“Everytime we play in India, there’s question mark on the pitch … It’s a typical Indian wicket, there are cracks, this wicket always had cracks,” Rathour told reporters on the eve of the match.

“It will turn, but how much it will turn and from when we are not sure. But we have enough balance in our team.” He said Bumrah is absolutely fine but it was not “advisable” to play him continuously. The India spearhead has bowled 80.5 overs in three Tests, taking 17 wickets at an average of 13.64.

“I think every Test match is a crucial test match, to be honest. With WTC points, every game is crucial. Even we would love Bumrah to play all the games,” Rathour said.

“But unfortunately that is not very advisable because the kind of workload he has had in the last three games. He has really bowled well and with a lot of heart, a lot of effort.

“For the kind of schedule we have in the future, with IPL and all, it was felt by everybody involved that he should be given a break. Otherwise he is absolutely fine physically. But it was felt that it is better that he gets a break because there was hardly any turnaround time between the games.” India’s top-order batter KL Rahul, who is doing rehab after struggling with quadriceps pain, too was ruled out of the fourth Test and seems doubtful for Dharamsala.

“For me either he is fit or he is not. At the moment he is not fit. I am not sure what percent he is fit at the moment and what is the stage,” he said.

“I am not sure, the medical team will be able to advise that but as far as we are concerned he is not fit and not available for this game, so we are focusing on this team.” Asked about players’ skipping matches in Ranji Trophy, Rathour said: “It’s the selectors’ job to pick the 15. This question is better asked to them, I used to be a selector but I’m not anymore.

“At the moment we see that people who have done well in domestic cricket are promoted. It’s good everybody should get chances.”

India batting coach Vikram Rathour said their batters have the skills to post a big score against the Shaheen Shah Afridi-led bowling unit. Pacers Afridi and Haris Rauf had rocked the Indian top order in their Group A league match here on Saturday, reducing them to 66 for 4 inside 15 overs. “We will try to bat better in that (Super 4) match. (In the last match) the conditions and situation were different. They are a good bowling attack. It is not like we can’t play them (Pakistan pacers). They are a good bowling attack and on certain days they will have an edge. When we get a start, our batters are capable of putting up a big score,” Rathour said at the post-match press conference after India defeated Nepal by 10 wickets on Monday.

Rathour was chuffed to see Ishan Kishan responding to the team’s guiding philosophy of flexibility with a mature knock against Pakistan.

Kishan, who batted at No. 5 for the first time in his career, made 82 off 81 balls against Pakistan. He shared a 138-run alliance with Hardik Pandya to help India post 266 but the match was eventually rained off.

Rathour said it is a good sign for India to have two very good batters in Kishan and KL Rahul to choose from for the middle-order slot.

“Ishan played really well against Pakistan. KL Rahul has done well for the team in the last two years. It is a good problem to have…we have two very good players to choose from.

“It is better to have such players to select from rather than having two struggling batsmen,” said Rathour.

Rathour said India needed to consider conditions while deciding to include either four specialist bowlers or three outright bowlers and one bowling all-rounder in the playing 11.

“Shardul does give depth (in batting), and he bowls as well. Shami is a better bowler but our batting will be compromised a bit (if he gets picked). But there will be some matches where we need to go with an out-and-out pace line-up. When we play on a pitch where we need an extra spinner that option is also available in Axar (Patel). So, it is good that we have a team that can play against all comers,” Rathour signed off.

Rohit Sharma traded caution with aggression to add a different dimension to his batting and the Indian skipper is happy with the results even if it means not getting those daddy hundreds. At the end of the 2019 World Cup, Rohit had scored 27 hundreds but in the last four years he could add only three more centuries to his tally. The captain largely believes that this is because of the high-risk game he has adopted. “I wanted to take more risks, which is why my numbers are slightly different now,” Rohit told PTI during an exclusive interview. “My (ODI) strike-rate (during this period) has increased but the average has dipped a bit. This is exactly what our batting coach (Vikram Rathour) was telling me, ‘You have scored big runs because of the way you batted all these years and in the last few years, it (big runs) has not happened because you are taking risk,” the skipper added.

Rohit is the only player to have scored three double hundreds — 209 (vs Australia, 2013), 264 (vs Sri Lanka, 2014) and 208* (vs Sri Lanka, 2017).

His last 150-plus knock came in 2019 against the West Indies in Vizag.

Rohit said that he had to compromise somewhere down the line.

“My career strike-rate is around 90 (89.97) but in past couple of years, if you look at my scores and take the strike-rate into consideration, it has been around 105-110. So somewhere you had to compromise. It is not possible to have a 55 average and a 110 strike-rate.” This high-risk game is also a process of his self-discovery, said Rohit.

“It was purely my choice. My usual batting is still my patent, but I wanted to try something else. I am very happy with the result.”

In fact, he had communicated his change of approach to the team management.

“Everyone wants to bat long and score those 150s and 170s. I still want to do that, but it is always nice to do something that you have not done. It only adds up in your list of batting abilities. Unless you do it, you won’t know it.

“I know if I play high risk shots, I will get out few times but I didn’t bother. This was communicated by me to the management that this is how I want to play.” An extension of that was the kind of tracks that India team has played Test matches on at home. They weren’t exactly batting-friendly, and the Indian skipper has been the team’s most consistent Test batter of late.

“Look at my recent Test innings in India. I can tell you that batting in India is much more difficult now than batting overseas, especially in the last 2-3 years. “The pitches that we have played on, it is more challenging than overseas. That’s why we haven’t spoken about runs and averages of batting unit. All of us agreed that we want to play on challenging pitches. I don’t want to worry about what kind of averages we finish with.

“That is how I think but different players will have different thought processes, and I don’t want to change that. I am going to play on pitches that suit our bowlers,” he declared.

He has captained Mumbai Indians for 11 years and is leading the national team for nearly two years now.

So do captains have shelf life? “There is no such thing as shelf life,” he replied with conviction.

“You get a responsibility, you produce a result and more important is if you are happy with the responsibility that you have been entrusted with. This is more important questions than the shelf life.” He is a planner but also likes to trust his gut instinct.

“I am a person who goes with the flow. What I feel right now, I would want to do without thinking about what I want to do five or six months later. I like to take things as they come but prepare according to what is in store in the future.”
