Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission Chairperson Rayapati Sailaja on Wednesday said concerted efforts to prevent teenage pregnancies were crucial, requiring a multi-stakeholder approach to address the health, social, and economic consequences of early motherhood.

Speaking at a State level consultation on “Multi-Sectoral Strategies to Prevent Teenage Pregnancies in Andhra Pradesh”, Dr. Sailaja stressed the need to scale up awareness among not only children but also their parents to prevent child marriages and teenage pregnancies. She said the focus should be on skill development through vocational education courses to enhance employability among youth and suggested that sarpanches and local leaders in village and mandal-level committees be involved and assigned with specific responsibilities.

The women’s panel chief said as part of comprehensive efforts to curb teenage pregnancies, the Commission was implementing an integrated action plan with the target of reducing such cases to below 5 % through coordination among all departments.

She said young girls should be made to understand the adverse consequences of teenage pregnancies and child marriages through structured health modules. She said teenage pregnancy cases were being reported from various parts of the State, with relatively higher prevalence in agency areas such as Paderu and later in Kurnool district. She directed the authorities concerned to initiate immediate and effective steps to implement the decisions and strategies formulated during this awareness seminar.

Speaking about the importance of creating awareness among school children regarding Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) rights and personal safety, she said identifying school dropouts and re-enrolling them in educational institutions would significantly help in addressing the issue.

She said the officials concerned should focus on providing vocational training to girls aged 15 to 16 and above, strengthen them economically, and channel their time towards productive activities. The Health Department would prepare and distribute special health modules focusing on reproductive health and menstrual hygiene, she said.

The Madanapalle police of Annamayya district on Wednesday (November 12) booked seven persons, including a senior government doctor and two government hospital technicians, on the charge of illegally removing the kidney of a 29-year-old woman from Visakhapatnam, who died after the procedure.

According to the police, the incident took place at Global Multi-Speciality Hospital in SBI Colony here around 2.30 p.m. on November 9. A case was registered at the II-Town police station on November 12 after a relative of the woman, identified as Sadi Yamuna from Boddapalem village at Anandapuram mandal in Visakhapatnam district, reported her as missing.

According to preliminary investigation, Anjaneyulu (A-1), District Coordinator of Health Services (DCHS- Annamayya district) who also worked for Global Multi Speciality Hospital, in collusion with a doctor from Bengaluru (A-2) and dialysis technicians Balu (A-3) of Government Hospital, Madanapalle, and Meharaj (A-4) of Government Hospital, Kadiri, performed an illegal kidney removal/transplantation procedure without seeking permission from the competent authority as per the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act. The kidney was said to have been meant for a dialysis patient in Goa.

They were allegedly assisted by Pilli Padma (A-5), Sathya (A-6) and Suri (A-7), all residents of Visakhapatnam who were part of the conspiracy for money.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP-Madanapalle) S. Mahendra told The Hindu that the accused convinced the Yamuna, a widow, to sell her kidney so she could overcome her financial problems. The kidney was allegedly removed and sold illegally without the knowledge of her family members.

After the procedure, Yamuna reportedly slipped into a coma and was rushed to the SVRR Hospital in Tirupati on November 9, but she died in the early hours of November 10. After her death, the accused allegedly tried to transport Yamuna’s body to her native village without informing her family.

The Deputy SP said the body was brought back to the Government Hospital in Madanapalle from Tirupati on Wednesday. “We are waiting for the post-mortem examination report,” he said. Criminal cases under sections of the BNS and the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act have been registered against the accused.

Busa Suramma, Yamuna’s mother, reached Madanapalle on Wednesday and lodged a formal complaint with the police.

Andhra Pradesh have seen several cases of illegal kidney trade. In 2018, the Guntur police busted a racket where fake Aadhaar and family-relation certificates were used to pass off unrelated donors as relatives. In 2023, a private hospital in Visakhapatnam’s Pendurthi area was sealed after the arrest of six persons in a case pertaining to illegal kidney transplants. In 2024, two separate cases in Guntur exposed rackets where an autorickshaw driver was duped into selling his kidney for a fraction of the promised sum, while another group arranged illegal transplants using forged documents.

New Delhi:

Dramatic time-lapse footage of floodwaters taking over a street in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada were shared Tuesday, underlining the scale of the emergency facing authorities after heavy rain in coastal districts killed nearly 50 people, a majority in the city, and affected over 10 lakh.

CCTV footage from Vijayawada’s Ajit Singh Nagar – submerged after a breach in the Budameru canal – showed ankle-level flooding in the narrow street at 9 am.

There was no indication of the rapid rise in water level that was to come.

Within three hours the road was under four feet of murky grey floodwaters with plastic bags and other waste material flowing along the street. As the water level rose, some concerned residents waded through the flood to hop on to two-wheelers and drive away.

Ten seconds into the clip the water had swelled from ankle-level to knee-level.

Twenty seconds into the clip three parked two-wheelers were half underwater.

But the worst and the scariest part was still to come.

From the 30-second mark to the 45th second the water level rose significantly, reaching well above the waist of five men wading, almost swimming, their way through the street, surrounded by muddy brown water teeming with plastic and other garbage.

By this time the street had become impossible to navigate (except perhaps on boats) but the water level was still rising, reaching to and over some compound walls standing four feet high.

Movement of traffic came to a halt on Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway as flood water submerged the highway near Suryapet in Telangana.

Traffic came to a halt on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway after floodwaters inundated the road.

The story was much the same in other parts of the city, with officials saying over 30,000 houses had been completely flooded and fire engines – over 100 of them – had to be deployed to clean algae and other waste material from the walls and inside compounds.

Water Department officials also had to figure out how to un-entangle three boats that had collided with the Prakasam barrage stretching across the Krisha River; eventually two heavy cranes, each capable of lifting 50 tonnes, had to be summoned to remove the vessels.

The boats had smashed into one another after all 70 gates of the barrage had to be opened to release floodwaters downstream. The location of the fourth is still unknown, such as the fury with which the water dashed into the boats.

In an unexpected twist, police have arrested two persons, including the owner of three boats, on suspicion of sabotage; the cops claim the boats, allegedly belonging to supporters of the opposition YSR Congress Party, were left to damage the barrage when the gates were opened.

Meanwhile, in some good news for flood-battered Vijayawada, water levels have almost receded from most parts and the city is expected to return to normalcy by tonight.

Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana said 26 of the city’s 32 wards had been cleared, but noted there were still challenges, such as removing floodwaters from Payakapuram, which had been underwater for nine days. Municipal workers have been busy removing sand, mud, and other debris from roads and residential areas, and sprinkling bleaching powder.

Electricity has also been mostly restored, with 95 per cent of the city’s supply back online.

As part of the relief measures – for which the Andhra Pradesh government has sought Rs 6,880 crore from the centre – packets of food, milk, and biscuits, are being distributed.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, whose Telugu Desam Party is an ally of the BJP in power at the centre, camped out in the city last week to direct rescue operations. He took the chance for a swipe at his rival, declaring the floods were due to his predecessor’ neglect of water canals.

Till Monday Vijayawada had to struggle with widespread floods for a ninth consecutive day.

Vijayawada:

Five members of a family including a financially struggling doctor were found dead in their home at Vijayawada, police said on Wednesday.

While four were found with slash injuries, one hung to death, said Vijayawada East deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Adhiraj Singh Rana, adding that the bodies were discovered by them on Tuesday morning and suspected that the crime might have occurred on Monday night.

D Srinivas (40) was found hanging while his wife D Usha Rani (38), two minor children–boy and a girl– and his mother D Ramanamma (70) were found with their jugular veins slashed, police said.

Police are investigating if Srinivas, an orthopedician, had first killed the four and then died by suicide.

“He was facing financial troubles and we are verifying that. Recently, he sold his hospital,” Rana told PTI.

According to the DCP, police are also looking into Srinivas’ financial issues.

Incidentally, on Monday night, the doctor handed over his car keys to a neighbour, requesting him to pass them on to his brother. He told the neighbour that all of five of them were going out.

Meanwhile, police are probing the case after registering a murder case under IPC Section 302 and also a suicide case under CrPC Section 174.
