Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush continued his blistering run of form in the Bundesliga on Sunday with an assist and a goal in his side’s 3-2 win away to Stuttgart. The Egyptian international enjoyed a dream return to former club Stuttgart, setting up Frankfurt’s first goal and scoring their third in a rollercoaster game. Marmoush, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent weeks, has now notched up 14 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season.

With 11 of those having come in the league, he is now level with Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts.

“Omar always wants to win, regardless of whether it’s a Bundesliga game or a training match,” Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmoeller told DAZN after the game.

The win saw Frankfurt remain in third, six points adrift of league leaders Bayern Munich and three ahead of reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, last season’s runners-up Stuttgart are now wallowing in mid-table having won only three of their first 10 games.

After surviving an early chance for Marmoush after just three minutes, Stuttgart had the better of the first half and were unfortunate not to take the lead themselves.

The home fans twice had their celebrations cut short in the first half-hour, as Ermedin Demirovic missed a penalty and Julian Chabot had a headed goal ruled out for offside.

Enzo Millot also grazed the bar on 38 minutes, but it was Frankfurt who finally broke the deadlock just before the break.

As the clock ticked over into added time, Marmoush picked out strike partner Hugo Ekitike with a venomous corner, and the French striker smashed in an unstoppable header.

Nathaniel Brown doubled Frankfurt’s lead 10 minutes into the second half, prodding home from close range after Ansgar Knauff unlocked the Stuttgart defence with a mazy run from midfield.

Marmoush then added a third just after the hour, curling in an unstoppable direct free-kick from around 25 metres.

The goal proved to be decisive as Stuttgart almost launched a miraculous comeback in the dying minutes of the game.

Josha Vagnoman snatched one back for the home side on 86 minutes, before Nick Woltemade prodded home a second four minutes later.

Chris Fuehrich sent Stuttgart into ecstasy when he buried the ball in the back of the net seven minutes into added time, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

“It was brutal today, but football is like that sometimes,” said Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness.

Record yellow card

In Sunday’s late game, Wolfsburg held on to win 3-1 away to Heidenheim and pull away from the relegation zone.

Yannick Gerhardt gave the visitors the lead with the first shot of the game after just three minutes, before Bence Dardai doubled the lead just before half-time.

Marvin Pieringer’s second-half strike wasn’t enough for Heidenheim, and Tiago Tomas sealed the win for Wolfsburg in the 90th minute.

Elsewhere, Hoffenheim’s Pavel Kaderabek picked up the joint-fastest yellow card in Bundesliga history during his side’s 0-0 draw with Augsburg.

Former Czech international Kaderabek was booked after just eight seconds for a high elbow against Augsburg’s Dimitris Giannoulis, equalling a record previously held by former Freiburg striker Florian Niederlechner.

The early yellow proved to be the most notable event in an otherwise forgettable game, as the two southern sides cancelled each other out on a chilly afternoon in Augsburg.

The draw left both teams in the bottom half of the table, with Hoffenheim just a point clear of the bottom three in 15th.

Victor Boniface struck a stoppage-time winner to give Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen a thrilling 4-3 win over Wolfsburg on Sunday, while Borussia Dortmund were outclassed in a 5-1 hammering at Stuttgart. In a seesaw encounter, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg were locked at 3-3 from the 48th minute. Wolfsburg were then reduced to 10 men in the dying stages when Yannick Gerhardt sunk his studs into Jeremie Frimpong’s calf. Boniface, who came on with 22 minutes remaining, collected a pass before pivoting on the spot and shooting home to snatch the German champions another late victory, providing a perfect boost ahead of next week’s trip to Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka was far from pleased with the win, calling the result “a giant wake-up call — none of us can be satisfied with the game today.

“We can’t keep going with performances like that. We can’t defend so naively. Sure, we scored four but we can’t do that every weekend.”

Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso had named a heavily changed line-up from the side which thrashed Feyenoord 4-0 in the Champions League on Thursday, giving Nordi Mukiele his starting debut.

However, Mukiele, signed on loan from French champions PSG, endured a nightmare start when he allowed the ball to bounce in off his thigh for a fifth-minute own goal.

Florian Wirtz, who scored a brace on his Champions League debut on Thursday, drew Leverkusen level with a superb effort from outside the box shortly after.

Jonathan Tah headed the hosts ahead from a corner after 32 minutes but Leverkusen’s joy was short-lived, with Wolfsburg’s Sebastiaan Bornauw equalising five minutes later, jumping above Mukiele to head in from close range.

Mattias Svanberg scored from the edge of the box on the counter for Wolfsburg before Leverkusen levelled again on 48 minutes through Piero Hincapie.

In breaking through for their debut Bundesliga title last season without losing a match Leverkusen dropped just 12 points but they appeared on course for a second setback after losing to RB Leipzig in their last home game.

Boniface had other ideas and sliced the ball home in the third minute of injury time to keep Leverkusen three points behind league leaders Bayern, ahead of next week’s clash in Munich.

In Sunday’s late game, RB Leipzig were held to a 0-0 stalemate at promoted St Pauli, their second straight scoreless draw.

St Pauli had the better of the opening period with several good chances but Leipzig ‘keeper Peter Gulacsi kept them at bay.

Leipzig improved in the second half, but the hosts held on to claim their first point of the season.

Stuttgart soar, Dortmund disappoint

Days after going down 3-1 at Real Madrid in the Champions League, Stuttgart dominated a disappointing Dortmund at home thanks to a brace from Deniz Undav and goals from Ermedin Demirovic, Enzo Millot and El Bilal Toure.

Dortmund had raided last season’s surprise runners-up Stuttgart in the summer, signing captain Waldemar Anton and striker Serhou Guirassy who had scored 28 goals in 28 league games.

Champions League finalists in June, Dortmund came into the match yet to lose this season but were 2-0 down in 21 minutes.

Undav cut in on the break just four minutes in and Demirovic — Guirassy’s replacement up front — headed in a second on the 21-minute mark.

Millot, who like Undav upgraded his loan deal to a permanent move in the summer, tapped in after a corner to put Stuttgart in control.

Guirassy pulled a goal back with 15 minutes remaining, but Stuttgart scored twice in the closing stages through Bilal Toure and Undav to top off a dominant victory.

“We showed a reaction to the Real Madrid game and I’m happy,” Undav told DAZN.

Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin, handed the first defeat of his short reign, said Stuttgart’s win was “absolutely deserved from the first until the last minute,” adding “I’m certain we’ll play differently on Friday (at home against Bochum) because I can’t accept that (performance)”.

Ten-man Bayer Leverkusen beat Stuttgart 4-3 on penalties in the season-opening German Super Cup on Saturday, winning the trophy for the first time. Victor Boniface’s 11th-minute goal was cancelled out four minutes later when Stuttgart’s Enzo Millot levelled. Leverkusen were then reduced to 10 men shortly before half-time when Martin Terrier saw red for a dangerous tackle. Deniz Undav gave Stuttgart the lead in the second half but Patrik Schick scored with two minutes remaining to equalise for Leverkusen and send the match to penalties.

Bayern Munich loanee Frans Kraetzig and Silas Mvumpa missed from the spot while Leverkusen converted all of their penalties.

“What we did in the last 10 or 15 minutes, with a man down, to score the equaliser — it was unbelievable,” Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso said after the match, praising his side’s “huge spirit”.

“I’m happy with the way we kicked off the season — we’ve got this spirit back”.

The season curtain-raiser, which puts the Bundesliga champions up against the Cup winners or league runners-up, was the first not to feature either Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund since 1993.

Stuttgart’s stunning effort last season, where the club went from a narrow relegation escape to second place ahead of Bayern, preceded a summer of upheaval as several star players left.

“Before the game, we didn’t really know where we stand this season,” Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness told reporters after the game.

“So for us it was a clear sign that we’re again going in the right direction.”

Unbeaten winners of the Bundesliga and German Cup double last campaign, Leverkusen had managed to avoid any major departures and started stronger on Saturday.

Boniface tapped in a goal-bound header from Edmond Tapsoba after 11 minutes.

The visitors levelled just four minutes later, French Olympic silver medallist Millot cutting a pass from Chris Fuehrich through a crowded penalty area and into the bottom right corner.

The sides traded chances before off-season addition Terrier dug his studs into Ermedin Demirovic’s ankle and was swiftly sent from the pitch.

Coach Xabi Alonso hooked Boniface for Germany defender Jonathan Tah almost immediately but Stuttgart dominated before half-time, Millot and Pascal Stenzel both going inches away from scoring a second.

Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness brought on Undav and Kraetzig from the bench and the duo combined to give the visitors the lead one minute later when the former Brighton striker tapped in on the counter.

Known for turning matches with late goals last season, Leverkusen again broke through in the dying stages, Alex Grimaldo finding Schick who powered the ball home with just two minutes remaining.

The match went straight to penalties without extra time and Leverkusen — who have not lost a match domestically since May 2023 — were faultless.

Bayer Leverkusen Eye ‘Immortality’ As Union Berlin Fight For Final Day Survival https://artifex.news/bayer-leverkusen-eye-immortality-as-union-berlin-fight-for-final-day-survival-5682190/ Fri, 17 May 2024 05:24:04 +0000 https://artifex.news/bayer-leverkusen-eye-immortality-as-union-berlin-fight-for-final-day-survival-5682190/ Read More “Bayer Leverkusen Eye ‘Immortality’ As Union Berlin Fight For Final Day Survival” »

Champions Bayer Leverkusen chase “immortality” in the shape of an undefeated Bundesliga season on Saturday as relegation-threatened Union Berlin face a last-day battle for survival. Xabi Alonso‘s Leverkusen can become the first team in Bundesliga history to go through a campaign unbeaten by avoiding defeat against Augsburg. Not even the greatest Bayern Munich sides have managed an invincible season. That Alonso’s men have done it without losing in any competition — a European record 50-game streak which includes runs to next week’s German Cup and Europa League finals — shows how incredible they have been.

A win against Augsburg would net Leverkusen 90 points from 34 games — the equal second-highest tally in German football history.

Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick said the match was “like a final”, while captain Lukas Hradecky said his team had “immortality” in sight.

Regardless of the result, Leverkusen will hoist the Bundesliga shield on Saturday and Hradecky said he would “be careful” not to hold it upside down, like Stuttgart captain Fernando Meira did in 2007.

In the German capital, Union — who faced Real Madrid in the Champions League in December  — need to beat Freiburg and hope for other results to go their way in order to avoid relegation.

Union won at home on the final day last season to finish fourth and qualify for Champions League football, continuing the team’s rise after their debut promotion in 2019.

Remarkably, Union sat atop the Bundesliga standings after two games this season, but then fell to rock bottom after a run of nine straight losses.

In 16th spot, Union need a point to avoid falling through the trap door.

Even then, staying in 16th will still mean a two-legged playoff against Fortuna Duesseldorf, who finished third in the second division.

Duesseldorf boast a 52,000-seat stadium and are in incredible form, having not lost in the league since early February.

For Union, even a win will not guarantee safety. Union will only be safe if one of Mainz, who play at Wolfsburg, or Bochum, who travel to Werder Bremen, lose.

Freiburg coach Christian Streich, who signs off from a 14-year tenure at the club against Union on Saturday, said his side were “going to play to win”.

“For Union, it’s about staying in the league. They will certainly do everything they can to stay in it, and we will do everything we can to have a nice finish.”

Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund host last-placed Darmstadt in Marco Reus‘ final game at the Westfalenstadion.

Bayern Munich will guarantee second spot with probably just a draw against Hoffenheim while Harry Kane requires six goals to beat Robert Lewandowski‘s single-season record of 41.

One to watch: Christopher Trimmel (Union Berlin)

Union Berlin captain Christopher Trimmel extended his deal with the relegation-threatened club by one year until 2025 on Thursday, promising “the story isn’t over yet.”

Trimmel joined Union in 2014 and is the only player remaining from the club’s first-ever promotion, back in 2019.

The Austria defender has tasted the highest of highs with Union, saying “together we have achieved more than I ever imagined. Union fans, I’m staying.”

Key stats

0 – No team has ever gone through a Bundesliga season unbeaten. Leverkusen are a game away.

71 – Last season, Bayern won the title on 71 points, beating Dortmund on goal difference. If Stuttgart beat Gladbach, they will join Leverkusen and Bayern in having more than 71 points.

17 – Darmstadt have 17 points with a game to go. Only three teams in Bundesliga history have ever recorded a worse points tally.

Fixtures (1330 GMT Saturday)

Union Berlin v Freiburg, Hoffenheim v Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg v Mainz, Bayer Leverkusen v Augsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt v RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund v Darmstadt, Stuttgart v Borussia Moenchengladbach, Werder Bremen v Bochum, Heidenheim v Cologne

Robert Andrich scored with the last kick of the match to extend Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten run to a 46th game this season with a 2-2 home draw against Stuttgart on Saturday as Harry Kane closed in a Bundesliga goals record. With champions Leverkusen facing their first loss of the season in any competition trailing 2-1 late in stoppage time, Andrich hammered in a loose ball to equalise in the sixth minute of stoppage time. The strike keeps Leverkusen’s remarkable streak of late goals alive, with Xabi Alonso‘s side doing the same at Borussia Dortmund in the seventh minute of injury time for a 1-1 draw last week.

Two goals in the space of nine minutes to start the second half from Chris Fuehrich and Deniz Undav put Stuttgart on course, with Amine Adli pulling one back after 61 minutes.

Leverkusen built pressure but could not break through, putting their hopes of becoming the first team to go a full Bundesliga season without defeat in doubt.

But they then won a free kick and Florian Wirtz curled the ball into the box, Andrich snapping up a rebound to score.

Alonso’s side have now won or equalised in stoppage time 10 times this season in all competitions.

“We tried until the end,” Alonso told Sky. “That first goal from Amine gave us belief — and gave us a push.”

Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness said the loss was “hard to believe — in our view, it was very unlucky.”

Kane targets Lewandowski

Kane scored twice in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt to set a new personal record for goals in a season.

Kane scored in each half, finishing off a tearing Konrad Laimer run and converting a penalty, to raise his league tally to 35 goals in 31 games.

Kane is now six goals shy of Robert Lewandowski‘s all-time single-season Bundesliga goals record from 2020/21. He has hit a personal best of 42 goals in all competitions this campaign.

The England captain’s goals came either side of a Hugo Ekitike stunner, a day after the Frenchman became a permanent Frankfurt player.

Bayern veteran Thomas Mueller said his side was “in a good flow”, saying since getting past Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals “we’ve been getting better, we’ve got a grip on things”.

Despite the victory, which solidified Bayern’s chances of a second-placed finish, both Laimer and defender Matthijs de Ligt were subbed off with injury just days before Tuesday’s home Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

Dortmund, Germany’s other Champions League semi-finalist, had a setback ahead of hosting Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, being thoroughly outclassed in a 4-1 defeat at Leipzig.

England winger Jadon Sancho curled an excellent shot from the edge of the box into the top right corner to give Dortmund the lead.

Jolted to life, Leipzig equalised almost immediately, Lois Openda turning in a superb Xavi Simons cross for his 24th goal of the season.

Leipzig then scored two quick-fire goals either side of half-time. Benjamin Sesko pounced on a rebound just before the break and Openda found Mohamed Simakan early in the second.

Christoph Baumgartner added a fourth with 10 minutes remaining to send Leipzig five points clear of Dortmund in fourth, the final guaranteed Champions League spot — although Germany are on track for five places next season.

Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel said “like so often this season, we gifted the opponent too many goals”.

Werder Bremen won 3-0 away at Augsburg with goals from Romano Schmid and Olivier Deman and a Marvin Ducksch penalty.

Wolfsburg also took a major step towards securing top-flight football, scoring two goals in the final minutes to come from behind and beat 10-man Freiburg 2-1.
