So, there’s to be no World T20 match next year in Bengaluru, one of India’s major cricket centres. Earlier, the inaugural match of the Women’s World Cup (which India won) was taken away. The Chinnaswamy Stadium hasn’t hosted a match since the stampede in June that killed 11 fans during the RCB celebrations following the IPL win.

Where does the home of Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Gundappa Vishwanath, Shanta Rangaswamy, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid go from here?

Speaking to a range of players and officials has been enlightening. The word that was used most often was ‘mess’. For some time now, the Karnataka State Cricket Association has had no President (after Raghuram Bhat was elected Treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India), and no Secretary or Treasurer (after A. Shankar and E.S. Jairam respectively resigned following the stampede). The KSCA Constitution states that vacancies should be filled within 45 days.

Now there’s a glimmer of hope — elections that were to be held by September 30 are finally being held on November 30. In one corner is Test star Venkatesh Prasad and his team and in the other, media magnate Shanth Kumar and his team. Both men with clean records and an unblemished public image.

Shanth Kumar’s is, somewhat surprisingly, called ‘Team Brijesh’. This is Brijesh Patel, who is 73 and cannot contest because he is above the age limit of 70. “This is just to say I am supporting them,” Patel says, “Just a message.”

Whoever is elected will have to deal with two important issues: one, practical, focused on the game itself, and the other the proxy control that seems to afflict many cricket associations in India. This latter is the back-seat driving that has got around some of the Supreme Court’s amendments to the Lodha Commission recommendations. Rather like in politics where a chief minister’s wife takes charge to keep the seat warm, as it were (like when Lalu Prasad Yadav’s wife succeed him as Chief Minister in Bihar). Cricket officials learn from the best!

Niranjan Shah’s son Jaydev Shah extended his family’s hold over Saurashtra cricket as did N. Srinivasan’s daughter Rupa in Tamil Nadu. Niranjan had been secretary of the Saurashtra Cricket Association for 43 years, long enough for many to wonder if the name should be changed to ‘Shahrashtra’. By one calculation, nearly a third of the national associations are run by sons, relatives, or those beholden to former officials or politicians.

Influence-peddling for political, personal, business reasons is a cricketing speciality; you only have to follow the career of some officials to understand this. Cricket-loyalty trumps party-loyalty even, and not in a nice way. Getting around the constitution has become a national sport, and sports associations are masters at it. There’s more politics in cricket than vice versa, which is a pity.

Decades ago, Brijesh Patel ended a fiefdom and brought a breath of fresh air to the KSCA when he led a group of cricketers to oust C. Nagaraj who had been in office in various capacities for years. Now he says, “You know cricketers don’t always make the best administrators. There are plenty of examples in India.”

E.S. Jairam, who resigned following the stampede, is the Shanth Kumar group’s secretary. The secretary in Prasad’s team is former cricketer Sujith Somasunder.

“Our focus is on the game,” says Prasad, “The stadium built by a giant like Chinnaswamy is in a mess. The cricketing structure needs to be strengthened. The YSR and Group II league which have not been held in recent years need to be revived. Likewise with women’s league cricket.”

Whoever comes to power will also have to deal with the government, especially regarding the return of top flight cricket to the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Past experience has shown that the authorities, both at the civic and governmental level, are not above demanding their pound of flesh for what they see as favours rendered to the cricketing body.

Fans — the game’s biggest stake-holders although they are seldom treated as such — will have to bide their time before some of its sheen returns to the KSCA. The elections are a start, but progress will depend on how the two important issues are addressed.

KL Rahul has been a polarizing person in Indian cricket, who has divided opinion among former cricketers, experts and fans. Be it for his strike rate in T20 cricket or for his knock in the 2023 ODI World Cup final or whether he deserves a place in India’s Test side, question marks have always hovered over Rahul. But Rahul stood tall amidst India’s batting struggles in the ongoing third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, making a brilliant 84 in Brisbane. Former India cricketer-turned-pundit Aakash Chopra has now hit back at other ex-India players who have criticised Rahul in the past.

“We know of KL Rahul’s celebration (shutting ears celebration). Now he has probably eliminated any outside noise and is completely focused on his game,” said Chopra, speaking on his YouTube channel.

“There are several former cricketers who sit and wait for Rahul to fail, and write essays on Rahul’s form. They are all silent now. They won’t speak about anyone anymore,” Chopra added, in a dig to former cricketers who spoke ill of Rahul.

“Things have changed a lot. The boy has done well and people can learn a lot from KL Rahul,” Chopra continued.

One of KL Rahul’s most staunch critics has been former India fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad. Despite both Rahul and Prasad hailing from the same city, Prasad had stated that KL Rahul was in the India Test side due to “favouritism”. Chopra’s comments, about Rahul silencing his doubters, may have been indirectly aimed at ex-cricketers like Prasad.

In a difficult third Test, with India struggling at 74/5 and trying to save a follow-on, Rahul put in a resilient 84 off 139 balls on Day 4, being one of only two Indian batters to go past 50.

Late cameos by tailenders Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah helped India avoid follow-on, and massively reduce Australia’s chances of victory.

Ex-India cricketer Venkatesh Prasad (File).

New Delhi:

Former cricketer Venkatesh Prasad has clattered into the political row triggered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s controversial election speech in Rajasthan this weekend – in which he referred to the nation’s Muslim community and alleged the Congress plans to “redistribute assets among infiltrators” should it return to power after this year’s election. The ex-India pacer drew a cricketing analogy.

“One of the political party’s manifestos is to redistribute wealth of the rich to the poor. The poor need to be uplifted but this thought process is so pathetic,” Mr Prasad declared on X (formerly Twitter).

“It is like saying ‘if we take 4 points from Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, and re-distribute it to the bottom 3 teams, they can make the playoffs.”

PM Modi’s speech in Rajasthan’s Banswara this weekend triggered furious pushback from the opposition and a section of civil society activists. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi hit out at the “lies” and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said the Prime Minister’s only ‘guarantee’ is “to abuse Muslims…” Samajwadi Party boss Akhilesh Yadav – who is part of the Congress-led INDIA opposition bloc – also called out the “lies”.

PM Modi had said, “This ‘urban Naxal’ mindset… they will not even leave your ‘mangalsutra’. They can go to that level… Congress manifesto says they will calculate gold with mothers and sisters, get information about it, and then distribute that property. They will distribute it to whom – Manmohan Singh’s government had said Muslims have first right on assets.”

PM Modi was referring to a statement by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh – on whom he lavished praise in February, calling him an “inspirational example” – in December 2006 at a meeting of the National Development Council on the fiscal priorities of his government.

According to the then Prime Minister’s Office, Dr Singh had said, “… We will have to devise innovative plans to ensure that minorities, particularly the Muslim minority, are empowered to share equitably in the fruits of development. They must have first claim on resources…”

The swipe, meanwhile, comes as PM Modi and the ruling BJP ramp up attacks on the Congress-led INDIA, which many see as a challenge to the saffron party’s hopes of a hat-trick of Lok Sabha poll wins.

PM Modi has also accused the Congress’ election manifest of being a “Muslim League imprint” and a “bundle of lies”. “Congress issued a bundle of lies in its manifesto… every page reeks of attempts to tear India apart. It reflects the thoughts the Muslim League had before independence,” he had said.

Ex-Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav made a “folded hands” appeal to the Prime Minister, urging him to stick to discussing ” real issues”, such as the cost of living crisis.

Since then, and unfazed by the criticism and demands of action by the Election Commission of India, the Prime Minister has repeated his attacks. At Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh today he declared “Congress and INDI alliance are now eyeing your income, your property…”

Meanwhile, this is not the first time Venkatesh Prasad has spoken out against the Congress and appeared to side with the BJP. In December he taunted the party over impending defeats in the Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan state elections.

“Abusing Sanatana Dharma was bound to have its consequences,” he posted on X.

Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin stirred up a major political controversy when he said “Sanatana Dharma should be eradicated”. Ally Congress, which largely avoided wading into the controversy, said the party believed in “sarvadharma sambhav” (equal respect to all religions).

Charith Asalanka was the star for Sri Lanka as he slammed six runs in the final two balls of the match to guide his side to the Asia Cup 2023 final after a win over Pakistan. Asalanka was unbeaten on 49 off 47 deliveries and he was able to finish the game well after Kusal Mendis provided them with a brilliant start to the run chase. However, the one cricketer who has earned a lot of praise besides these two was Pramod Madushan who sacrificed his wicket to get Asalanka back on strike on the fourth ball of the final over.

Madushan missed a ball from Zaman Khan and although Asalanka made a run for it from the non-striker’s end, he stayed inside the crease to make sure that they cannot be dismissed if the wicket-keeper comes up with a direct hit. Rizwan went for the direct hit but was unable to hit the stumps.

Once Asalanka crossed over, he started running and although Zaman was able to complete the run-out on the other end, Asalanka was back on strike and that proved to be the game-changer.

Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad was all praise for Madushan.

Great game awareness from Pramod Madushan yesterday night. Did not leave the crease until Asalanka made it. Very impressive. @ashwinravi99 probably one of the finest at making good use of the rules would be v impressed,” Prasad posted on the X (formerly known as Twitter).

Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin replied to his post with an interesting analogy.

“Absolutely! Just He missed the ball, Asalanka was charging down the pitch ( high octane pressure ) and yet this guy stood his ground until the keeper missed his attempt and then started running. All I can say is that these sort of reactions come from practice and this happens mostly in Tennis ball cricket,” he replied.

The 2023 G20 Summit in New Delhi, a two-day mega conclave of world leaders under India’s presidency, successfully ended on Sunday. PM Narendra Modi handed over the G20 presidency to Brazil’s Lula Da Silva, marking the end of the Summit. The Prime Minister handed over the ceremonial gavel to the Brazilian President to mark the transfer of the Presidency at the third G20 session “One Future” at the Bharat Mandapam in Delhi’s Pragati Maidan.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan congratulated PM Narendra Modi for the “success of India’s G20 Presidency”.

“Congratulations to Hon. PM @narendramodi ji for the success of India’s G20 Presidency and for fostering unity between nations for a better future for the people of the world,” the superstar posted on X.

“One Earth, One Family, One Future , beautifully said.” former Indian cricket team pacer Venkatesh Prasad wrote in reply to that post.

One of the biggest critics of the Indian team, Venkatesh Prasad, hasn’t believed in mincing his words while expressing his opinions on cricketing affairs. Having publicly criticised KL Rahul and a few other cricketers in the past, Prasad took a swipe at the Asian Cricket Council most recently, after the governing body announced an exceptional ‘Reserve Day’ for the India vs Pakistan Super 4 clash. While Prasad’s decision to take a swipe at the Jay Shah-led ACC got fans’ attention, a post from him on X (formerly Twitter), triggered an even bigger storm.

But, Prasad decided to delete, suggesting the post was being comprehended in an unexpected way. But, the former India pacer then decided to share the post once again, this time with a few alterations.

“It takes one corrupt, arrogant guy to take away the hardwork of an otherwise non-corrupt organisation and spoil the reputation of an entire organisation & the impact isn’t just micro but at a macro level. This is true in every field, be it politics, sports, journalism, corporate,” Prasad’s fresh post read.

When an X user had asked Prasad about the reason for deleting his tweet, he said: “That was a general tweet where I spoke about how one person who is corrupt can undo a lot of good work of his organisation and it can have large-scale implications on a macro level as well in any field. Since I was also speaking about the inefficiency of the BCCI around tickets in other tweets, it led to confusion and looked out of context. Hence deleted,” he said.

Prasad had earlier also criticised the BCCI over the manner in which the tickets for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup have been put up for sale. Be it the selection matters in the Indian team, the functioning of the board, or the performance of individuals, Prasad hasn’t flinched while sharing his critical opinions.

The decision taken by the Asian Cricket Council to keep a reserve day for the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match between India and Pakistan was met with a lot of criticism. It was the only match that was given a reserve day and as a result, both fans and experts were not pleased with the decision and called for all matches of the tournament to be treated equally. Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad took to social media to express his disappointment at the situation and he even said that he wishes that it rains throughout the two stipulated days in order to stop the ‘malicious plans’ from succeeding.

“If true this is absolute shamelessness this. The organisers have made a mockery and it is unethical to have a tournament with rules being different for the other two teams. In the name of justice, will only be fair if it is abandoned the first day, may it rain harder on the second day and these malicious plans not succeed,” Prasad posted on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

Prasad feels that the Indian team are strong contender for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup from October 5 in India. The former pacer believes that the Indian team is in possession of a “good squad” but the support from the fan base will also play a crucial role in their journey.

He urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ensure that the experience of the fans should be easy and smooth in comparison to previous years.

“We have a good team and are strong contenders for the World Cup but we need genuine fans inside the stadium cheering for the team and their experience needs to be far smoother and easier than what it has been, and for that the BCCI needs to do far better than they have done so far. It is a reflection of the country as a whole and we as a nation should not be let down at any cost,” Prasad posted.

Earlier on Saturday, he lambasted the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) decision to have a reserve day only for the match between India and Pakistan in the Super four stage of the Asia Cup 2023.

The former Indian bowler slammed ACC’s decision and said it is unethical to have different rules for two teams.

ACC on Friday announced a reserve day for the match between India and Pakistan which is scheduled to take place on September 10 at R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. If adverse weather suspends play during the India and Pakistan game, the match will continue on September 11 from the point it was suspended.
