A 5-year-old boy in Utah accidentally shot himself to death with a gun he found at home. While playing in his parents’ bedroom on August 22, Brooks Thomas Wilson discovered a loaded 9mm pistol and, tragically, it discharged when he picked it up, causing a fatal head wound, the New York Post reported. 

His parents, Bryan and Kristin Wilson were at home at the time and rushed to the room after hearing the gunshot. In a desperate attempt to save their son, Bryan performed Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as they awaited medical help. Emergency medical crews attempted CPR, but Brooks died from his injuries.

Santaquin Police Department lieutenant Mike Wall said the shooting appeared to be accidental and no foul play was suspected.

The boy’s family released a statement and described the incident as “an unimaginable tragedy.”

“Losing a cherished member who will be deeply missed. However, through our faith in Jesus Christ, we will get through this trial, as we feel his love so abundantly,” they said in a statement obtained by People.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who responded and the community for their overwhelming support and compassion. This heartbreaking incident has taught us difficult lessons, and we deeply regret that it unfolded this way. Our hearts are shattered, and we hope that our family’s loss serves as a poignant reminder of how quickly life can change,” the family added.

They continued, “We hope this tragedy serves as a reminder for others to take every precaution to ensure the safety of their children. As we come together to grieve, we kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time as we mourn the loss of our beloved little boy.”

Utah law does not require prosecution for people who leave unattended weapons accessible to minors, and also does not require weapons to be secured, according to the Giffords Law Center.

A chunk of ice fell from an airplane in the United States and killed a family’s pet goat, as per a report in Metro UK. The incident took place in Utah on May 6 around 9:30 am. Cassidy Lewis was at her home when she heard a loud bang that shook the entire house.

When she went outside, she saw her pet animals freaking out. She said, “Roosters were freaking out, the horses were going crazy.” The woman saw a sizable hole in the shed’s ceiling where she was keeping her goats. Upon further checks, she found an injured goat which was bleeding heavily. Further, there were bits of ice beneath the hole in the ground.

She continued, “It was at least a basketball-sized piece of ice, I would assume, especially because the size of the hole and how much ice there was on the ground.”

At first, she was shocked and believed it could have been an explosion. Photos taken at the site revealed ice on the roof adjacent to a hole, with the shed’s top punctured through.

The ice had fallen from a plane, which was the only logical explanation offered by the law enforcement personnel. “He just said that we are below a flight path and it could have been ice from an airplane, which I had no idea could even happen,” Ms Lewis said.

The woman said that she took the pet to the veterinarian, however it could not be saved and was euthanised.

She has also made requests for an investigation into the event from Salt Lake City International Airport and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Ms Lewis stated that the FAA informed her that they are investigating the possible plane from which the ice fell. Notably, her house is on the airport’s flight path.

“Honestly, every time I hear a plane go by, I’m thinking like, it’s made me a little bit nervous about it happening again. We’re just very unlucky apparently to have it hit us,” she added.

A couple from Utah, United States, accidentally shipped their pet cat in an Amazon return package, as per a report in the New York Post. The pet almost survived in the box without food or water for six days.

The cat’s owner, Carrie Clark, discovered the animal had vanished on April 10. Ms Clark spent almost a week searching their home and neighbourhood with the help of family and friends. They also posted missing posters all around the town. The feline, named Galena, was discovered safe and well inside the package on April 17 by an employee at an Amazon warehouse in California. “I didn’t believe it at first and thought it was a prank,” she said when she learnt that the cat was alive.

“Galena is a huge emotional support to me and has helped me get through many health challenges over the past six years. The anxiety and stress of not knowing what happened to her was excruciating,” she explained.

On April 17, the owner received a call from a vet in California informing that the cat was brought into the clinic and her microchip was scanned. The veterinarian clarified that Brandy, an employee of Amazon, had brought the cat after discovering it in a return package having Ms Clark’s residential address.

“I ran to tell my husband that Galena was found, and we broke down upon realizing that she must have jumped into an oversized box that we shipped out the previous Wednesday,” she stated. The owner continued, “The box was a ‘try before you buy’ and filled with steel-toed work boots,” she explained.

The woman explained, “After talking to the vet, I got to talk to Brandy on the phone. She was so relieved to find out that we love Galena and were desperately looking for her.”

The next day, Ms Clark and her husband flew to California to pick up their cat. They were thrilled to meet Brandy and express their gratitude for her assistance in discovering and taking care of their cat.

“It was an amazing reunion! Galena instantly stopped shaking and relaxed in my arms when I got to hold her again. Despite being skinnier and some mild dehydration, her bloodwork was completely normal and she was completely unharmed!” she remarked.

“The box Galena was in was split open on one seam and that gave her air to breathe. Galena survived because of her microchip, Brandy’s kindness and generosity, and God’s grace!” she concluded.
