The rupee depreciated 7 paise to close at 95.68 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday (August 18, 2026), weighed down by elevated crude oil prices and lingering geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Forex traders said the USD/INR pair is likely to trade with a slight negative bias, pressured by the delay in the deal between the U.S. and Iran, rising crude oil prices and broader dollar support.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 95.68 against the greenback and traded in a range of 95.64-95.69 during the session. It eventually settled at 95.68 (provisional), lower by 7 paise from its previous close.

On Monday (August 17, 2026), the rupee depreciated 19 paise to close at 95.61 against the U.S. dollar.

“With Brent crude rising above $90/bbl and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remaining unresolved, oil prices will remain a key monitorable for the rupee, inflation and foreign flows,” said Siddhartha Khemka – Head of Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd.

Moreover, weak global cues and FII selling weighed on sentiment, with FIIs selling equities worth ₹2,535 crore on Monday (August 17, 2026), their highest selling in three weeks, Mr. Khemka said, adding that “the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield remained elevated”.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 99.60, down 0.04%.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading higher by 0.01% at $90.88 per barrel in futures trade.

Overall, elevated crude prices, geopolitical uncertainty and foreign selling are likely to keep near-term sentiment subdued, while resilient domestic fundamentals and continued policy support could provide a constructive medium-term backdrop, Mr. Khemka said.

On the domestic equity market front, Sensex tanked 492.70 points to settle at 77,235.46, while the Nifty fell 132.75 points to close at 24,154.90.

Foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth ₹2,535.10 crore on a net basis on Monday (August 17, 2026), according to exchange data.

The rupee depreciated 67 paise to close at 95.23 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday (July 1, 2026), as a strengthening dollar index weighed on emerging market currencies.

Forex traders said the USD/INR pair witnessed significant pressure due to the strengthening of the American currency in the overseas market, persistent capital outflows, and broader Asian currency weakness.

Moreover, market sentiment turned highly cautious, following the breach of the psychological level of 95.00.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 94.67 against the American currency and traded in a range of 94.60-95.29 during the session.

The rupee finally closed at 95.23 (provisional), registering a decline of 67 paise from its previous close.

On Tuesday (June 30, 2026), the rupee depreciated by 5 paise to close at 94.56 against the U.S. dollar.

“The Indian rupee declined for a third consecutive session, pressured by short covering and a strengthening U.S. dollar against major currencies. Additional weakness across Asian currencies further weighed on the rupee,” Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities, said.

Parmar further added that market sentiment has turned negative following the breach of the 95 level. “In the near term, spot USD-INR is expected to face resistance at 95.80, while support is seen at 94.60.”

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 101.42, up 0.23%.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading lower by 0.88% at $72.31 per barrel in futures trade.

On the domestic equity market front, Sensex jumped 443.97 points to settle at 76,922.64, while the Nifty climbed 140.10 points to 24,005.85.

Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹2,556.75 crore on a net basis on Tuesday (June 30, 2026), according to exchange data.

Meanwhile, India’s manufacturing sector activity growth eased in June, as new business orders and international sales increased at softer rates, resulting in slower expansions in buying levels, employment and output.

The seasonally adjusted HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index fell from 55.0 in May to 54.2 in June, pointing to the second-weakest improvement in the health of the sector since mid-2022.

Forex traders said the crude oil level of $69 per barrel will act as a support for the domestic unit as India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, stands to benefit from cheaper oil.

The rupee traded in a narrow range on Wednesday (September 11, 2024) and appreciated 2 paise to 83.96 against the American currency, on easing crude oil prices and tracking its Asian peers.

Forex traders said foreign institutional inflows, alongside significant corrections in asset classes like the dollar index and crude oil prices, supported the rupee, while the Reserve Bank’s active intervention kept the rupee in a tight range.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit moved in a narrow range. It opened at 83.97 against the American currency and was at 83.96 in initial trade, registering a rise of 2 paise over its previous close.

On Tuesday (September 10, 2024), the rupee depreciated 3 paise to close at 83.98 against the American currency.

The rupee falls 2 paise to close at 83.97 against U.S. dollar on Tuesday (September 10, 2024).

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.21% to 101.42 points.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, was trading higher by 0.48% to $69.52 per barrel in futures trade.

Forex traders said the crude oil level of $69 per barrel will act as a support for the domestic unit as India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, stands to benefit from cheaper oil.

“The Indian rupee cannot remain in such a state for long as fundamentals clearly indicated gains for rupee with a fall in oil prices, good economic fundamentals, rise in Asian currencies and rising interest differentials should allow RBI to allow the rise in rupee,” Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.

Bhansali further said that over a longer term, 83.97 looks to be a good selling level for exporters despite a higher Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER), which the Reserve Bank may have to ignore for the moment. For the day, 83.90 to 84.05 should be the range.

On the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 104.25 points, or 0.13%, to 81,817.04, while the Nifty was down 33.05 points, or 0.13%, to 25,008.05.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Tuesday, as they purchased shares worth ₹2,208.23 crore, according to exchange data.

The rupee traded in a narrow range on Tuesday (September 10, 2024) and depreciated 2 paise to close at 83.97 (provisional) against the American currency, weighed down by the strengthening of the American currency in the overseas market.

Forex traders said the U.S. dollar recovered amid mixed non-farm payrolls data. The slight recovery in crude oil prices also weighed on the rupee. However, a surge in the domestic markets cushioned the downside.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.95 against the American currency and finally settled at 83.97 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar, down 2 paise from its previous close.

On Monday (September 9, 2024), the rupee traded in a narrow range and closed flat at 83.95 against the American currency.

“We expect the rupee to trade with a slight negative bias on the strong US dollar and concerns over global economic growth. However, positive domestic markets and any intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may support the rupee at lower levels,” Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, said.

Mr. Choudhary further noted that “investors may remain cautious ahead of the U.S. CPI and ECB monetary policy this week. “USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 83.70 to 84.20,” he said.

On the domestic equity markets front, the Sensex climbed 361.75 points, or 0.44%, to settle at 81,921.29 points, while the Nifty rose 104.70 points, or 0.42%, to close at 25,041.10 points.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.03% to 101.58.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell 1.16% to 71.01 in futures trade.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Monday, as they purchased shares worth ₹1,176.55 crore, according to exchange data.
