A huge controversy erupted during the Under-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy final between Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. An umpiring decision has caught the attention of the fans after Karnataka opener Prakhar Chaturvedi was given out caught-behind by the on-field umpire, despite wicketkeeper Aaradhya Yadav clearly grassing the ball. The incident took place during the morning session of Day 1 when Chaturvedi tried to swat Shubham Mishra’s delivery for a boundary.

However, the ball was sliding down the leg side and Prakhar only managed to get the slightest of edges.

The UP players made a strong appeal for caught behind and the umpire raised his finger, while Aaradhya was busy gathering the ball from the ground.

Taking to social media, a fan pointed out the bizarre incident and questioned the “level of umpiring” in the domestic circuit.

The fan urged the BCCI to investigate the incident and penalise the umpire.

Some of the users even called for a ban on the wicketkeeper Yadav for cheating.

Meanwhile, the Ranji Trophy final is being contested between Mumbai and Vidarbha at the Wankhede Stadium.

A century by Musheer Khan propelled Mumbai to 418 and helped them set a target of 538 against Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy final.

At Tea on Day 4, Vidarbha were 155/4 with Karun Nair and captain Akshay Wadkar in the middle.

Sixteen-year-old pacer Shabnam Shakil announced her arrival on the big stage with brilliant figures of 3/11 to negate Deepti Sharma’s brilliance as Gujarat Giants all but dashed UP Warriorz’s hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages with an eight-run victory in the Women’s Premier League on Monday. Warriorz, with a negative net run-rate of -0.371, needed to win to have any chance of qualification but despite Deepti’s unbeaten 88 off 60 balls, Warriorz could only end up with 144 for 5, chasing a target of 153 set by the Giants. India international Deepti smashed nine fours, while her partner Poonam Khemnar scored 36 off as many balls. But the Warriorz had already lost steam after being reduced to 35 for 5 and it was always going to be a catch-up game for Healy’s women.

They ended their eight-game campaign with six points. Even if RCB lose their last game, the Bengaluru side would still enjoy a better net run-rate unless they lose by a massive margin.

Shabnam, playing only her second game of the season, removed seasoned campaigners Alyssa Healy, Chamari Athapaththu and her former India U-19 teammate Shweta Sehrawat to dash any hopes that Warriorz harboured of finishing in the top three.

Bowling with a high-arm action and pronounced jump, the neat six-foot-tall girl got extra bounce and the subtle movement off the seam also did work wonders for her.

Earlier, UP Warriorz’s spin troika of Sophie Ecclestone, Deepti Sharma and Rajeswari Gayakwad made life miserable for wooden spooners Gujarat Giants before Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 74 gave them some breathing space with a total of 152 for 8.

Young Indian fielders in the Warriorz side committed basic mistakes in catching and holding fort in the deep, which cost the team an extra 25 runs.

Ecclestone (3/38 in 4 overs), Deepti (2/22 in 4 overs) and Gayakwad (1/28 in 4 overs) tightened the noose on the Giants after Mooney and Wolvaardt (43 off 30 balls) added 60 in 7.5 overs to lay a solid foundation.

However things went haywire from thereon for the Giants as once Wolvardt was dismissed, Ecclestone and Deepti choked the run-flow and got the valuable wickets in the process.

Gujarat’s Indian talent has been below par, and once again the likes of Bharati Fulmali, Dayalan Hemlatha and Tanuja Kanwer flattered to deceive with poor game sense and shot selection that left a lot to be desired.

With Phoebe Litchfield and Ashleigh Gardner struggling this season, there has been a lot of pressure on Wolvardt and Mooney.

Mooney, for a better part of her knock, scored at a run-a-ball and then the profligacy of the UP Warriorz fielders helped her get some extra boundaries.

The likes of Shweta Sehrawat, Poonam Khemnar and Saima Thakor are still not ready for top-flight cricket and some distance away from being decent fielders for this level.

UP Warriorz’s (UPW) Vrinda Dinesh has been ruled out of the remainder of this season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) after suffering a shoulder injury during Match 6 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Wednesday. WPL released an official statement informing that the opener has been ruled out of the ongoing edition of the WPL and wicketkeeper batter Uma Chetry will join the squad in place of her. Vrinda was bought for Rs. 1.3 Crores in the WPL auction by the UPW franchise.

“UP Warriorz’s Vrinda Dinesh is ruled out of the remainder of the Women’s Premier League after suffering a shoulder injury during Match 6 (28th February) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru against Mumbai Indians,” the statement reads.

“The UP Warriorz have signed wicket-keeper batter Uma Chetry as a replacement at her reserve price of INR 10 lakhs. Uma recently played for India A against England A and was also a part of the victorious India A Emerging squad that won the ACC Emerging Women’s Asia Cup 2023,” the statement added.

Coming to UP Warriorz’s recent game, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s clinical all-round performance helped them clinch an important 23-run win in their final game of the home leg over UPW at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday.

RCB scored a challenging 198/3 and restricted UP Warriorz to 175/8.

After an impressive display with the bat, RCB bowlers managed to take wickets at regular intervals which ensured Warriorz ended the night on the losing side.

Alyssa Healy (55) played a captain’s knock but the constantly increasing asking rate got the better of her. Sophie Molineux cashed in and claimed the captain’s wicket.

Deepti Sharma and Poonam Khemnar managed to put up a meaningful 41-run stand but eventually, their efforts went in vain as RCB comfortably emerged victorious.

A rather bizarre incident took place in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 on Monday after UP Warriorz’ Chamari Athapaththu was controversialy dismissed LBW. Facing a leg-spinner, Athapaththu was hit on the pads by Georgia Wareham of Royal Challengers Bangalore. While the on-field umpire gave the decision in the favour of the batting team, RCB captain Smriti Mandhana decided to go for a review. Surprisingly, the ball-tracking showed that the delivery from Wareham would’ve hit the stumps, suggesting it was a googly and not a leg-spinner.

Seeing the decision converting from not-out to out, Athapaththu and her non-striking parnter Alyssa Healy were left perplexed, with the latter even shouting at the camera, saying ‘no way, no way’.

The decision can be seen as the turning point in the fortunes for the UP franchise that went on to lose the contest by 23 runs.

UP Warriorz coach couldn’t hold his frustration when asked about the controversial dismissal.

“You watch the ball with the naked eye, and you think it might pitch in line, just maybe,” Lewis said after the game. “Then you look at the ball rotating, and well, it’s rotating like a legspinner. There are not many legspinners that go towards that [other] side. It was a fascinating dismissal and a massive turning point for us in that game.”

The coach felt had Chamari been in the middle for a longer period, things could’ve ended in the Warriorz’s favour.

“Chamari is an amazing player and you saw how difficult it was when a left-hander and a right-hander were batting together, of the quality of Smriti [Mandhana] and Ellyse Perry. And they are able to access the short side of the ground. That was one of the reasons why we picked Chamari, to be able to access the short side of the ground for both the right and the left-hander. So to lose her in that way was incredibly frustrating.

“I don’t know the ins and outs of hawk-eye and the technology and how it works. But it was certainly an interesting passage of play, and something that we are pretty frustrated about.”

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was witness to some terrific hitting from Royal Challengers Bangalore batters in a Women’s Premier League match against UP Warriorz on Monday. Engaging fifties by skipper Smriti Mandhana and star all-rounder Elysse Perry took Royal Challengers Bangalore to a formidable 198 for three in 20 overs. Looking to get out of a two-match losing streak, RCB promoted S Meghana into the opening slot in place of Sophie Devine and the move paid off.

Meghana and Mandhana (80, 50b, 10×4, 3×6) added 51 runs in 5.3 overs to give the Royal Challengers a strong platform and the hosts ended the Power Play at 57 for 1, their best in WPL 2.

Mandhana in the company of Perry (58, 37b, 4×4, 4×6) added 95 runs off just 64 balls for the second wicket to optimise that start as the UP bowlers wilted under constant heat.

The left-hander’s timing was stunning as she played shots all around the park and treated spinners with disdain. It will give her a lot of confidence as she often tends to get stuck against the tweakers.

Mandhana, who was dropped on 28, was particularly severe on off-spinner Chamari Athapathuthu and left-arm pacer Anjali Sarvani, who she carted for a slew of fours and sixes.

But slog-sweep of off-spinner Deepti Sharma ended in the hands of Poonam Khemnar at deep mid-wicket to silence the roaring RCB fans.

However, Perry, who smashed left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad for two successive sixes, and Richa Ghosh added 42 runs off 18 balls for the third wicket as RCB motored on to a strong total. One of her sixes even went on to break the display car’s window.

The Warriorz’s chase did not have much to write home about except a fifty (55, 38b, 7×4, 3×6) by captain Alyssa Healy as it ended at 175/8.

Vrinda ruled out

Warriorz’s Vrinda Dinesh is ruled out of the remainder of the WPL after suffering a shoulder injury during the match against Mumbai Indians here on February 28.

The UP side has signed wicket-keeper batter Uma Chetry as a replacement at her base price of Rs 10 lakhs.

Uma recently played for India A against England A and was also a part of the India A Emerging squad that won the ACC Emerging Women’s Asia Cup 2023.

RCB also made a change to the side, benching injured Shreyanka Patil for veteran Ekta Bisht.

Grace Harris made a powerful fifty that helped UP Warriorz negate a sluggish surface to register a facile six-wicket win over Gujarat Giants in their Women’s Premier League match on Friday.
Harris (60 not out, 33 balls, 9×4, 2×6) and skipper Alyssa Healy (33, 21b, 7×4) helped Warriorz hunt down 143 in 15.4 overs for their second win in the tournament. Giants were restricted to 142 for five after left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone (3/20) used a rough deck to her advantage.

Harris gave finishing touches to her good work with an outstanding innings.

The Australian right-hander used her reach and force to telling effect to keep the pressure on the Giants bowlers after Healy gave them a fantastic start in the Power Play.

The diminutive Australian smashed pacer Meghana Singh for three successive fours in the third over as the UP outfit reached 33 in just three overs, which they later swelled to 69 for two in the Power Play section.

The Giants also suffered a major blow when Harleen Deol had to limp off the field after she landed on her knees while trying to stop the ball near the ropes.

But the Gujarat side showed some signs of a comeback when they collected the quick wickets of Healy, debutante Chamari Athapathuthu and Shewta Sherawat to reduce UP to 90 for 4 in the 11th over.

They needed 53 more runs to finish the chase at this stage but Harris and Deepti Sharma (17 not out) amassed the runs in just 30 balls to propel their side to victory.

Earlier, Gujarat, in fact, made a fine start to their innings as Lara Wolvaardt (28, 26b, 4×4) helped them reach 41 in the Power Play for the loss of skipper Beth Mooney.

Wolvaardt smashed Anjali Sarvani for three fours in a row through the off-side as the pacer erred in line outside the off-stump.

But once the Power Play ended, the Giants slipped into a period of hibernation, going without a boundary for 23 balls, and the dismissal of Wolvaardt too did not help their cause.

It required a forceful 52-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Phoebe Litchfield (35, 26 balls) and Asheligh Gardner (30, 17 balls) to add a touch of respectability to their total.

Litchfield, who was dropped on 19 by Deepti Sharma off Ecclestone, brought her hockey background into her batting, using those supple wrists to manoeuvre the ball into the corners behind the wicketkeeper.

Her reverse scoop off left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad for a boundary was a treat to watch.

At the other end, Gardner was all about raw power and smart placement. Gardener muscled her Australian teammate Harris over mid-wicket for six as the Giants tried to make up for the lost time.

But the flowering alliance was snapped when Gardner’s attempt to reverse-scoop ended in the hands of Athapaththu near short fine leg.

In the same over, Litchfield was run out while trying to steal a quick single, as Saima Thakor‘s direct throw beat her to the crease.

Litchfield’s dismissal also ended the Giants’ hopes of raking in some quick runs in the last couple of overs.

Authoritative fifties by Richa Ghosh and S Meghana were well-supported by crafty leg-spinner Sobhana Asha as Royal Challengers Bangalore celebrated their first home WPL match with a fighting two-run win over UP Warriorz in Bengaluru on Saturday. Richa (62, 37b, 12×4) and Meghana (53, 44b, 7×4, 1×6) pushed Royal Challengers to a par 157 for six on a slightly tacky pitch as they added 71 runs for the fourth wicket in 50 balls.

Grace Harris (38, 23b, 4×4, 2×6) and Shewta Sehrawat (31, 25b, 2×4, 1×6) milked 77 runs in 44 balls for the fourth wicket but UP could not survive a five-wicket haul by leg-spinner Sobhana Asha (5/22), ending up at 155 for seven.

The Warriorz were well on course for a win at 116 for three in the 15th over, but Sobhana’s three-wicket burst in the 17th over changed the complexion of the game.

She jettisoned Harris, Sehrawat and Kiran Navgire in that over to break UP’s hopes by a thin margin.

The Warriorz chase got off to a rather sedate start after losing skipper Alyssa Healy in the second over itself.

Left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux produced a ripper to get rid of Healy. The ball pitched around middle and off line, before straightening to clip the bails off past the tentative prod of the UP opener.

Vrinda Dinesh and Tahlia McGrath added 38 runs for the second wicket but they also consumed 7.4 overs for it, struggling to pull out big shots on a slow deck.

But Sobhana struck heavy blows in the 9th over, dismissing both Vrinda and McGrath.

Vrinda, who laboured to a 28-ball 18, tried to step down and hoick Sobhana but missed the ball as stumper Richa did the rest.

Sobhana ousted McGrath two balls later when the Aussie batter’s attempt to slog sweep saw the ball rearranging her stumps.

For the record, Sobhana is the first Indian to take a five-wicket haul in the WPL.

List of players with five-wicket hauls in WPL

Marizanne Kapp 5 for 15 for DC vs Gujarat Giants in 2023

Tara Norris – 5 for 29 for DC vs RCB in 2023

Kim Garth – 5 for 36 for Gujarat Giants vs UP Warriorz in 2023

Sobhana Asha – 5 for 22 for RCB vs UP Warriorz in 2024

Earlier, RCB batters hobbled to a total that proved just enough on the night.

The RCB were tottering at 54 for three in 7.5 overs after being asked to bat first.

Sensing the situation, Meghana and Richa took their time to settle into their partnership, but once they got their eyes in, the RCB pair did not look back.

Meghana, who was dropped on 20 and 22, made full use of those let-offs to play some stunning shots around the ground.

Her thumping loft over extra cover for a six off left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad was good enough to watch in loop.

She reached her fifty in 40 balls, and Richa, who hammered pacer Saima Thakor for 16 runs in the 14th over, reached her own mark soon off 31 balls with a four off Tahlia McGrath.

The partnership was broken when Gayakwad had Meghana stumped by Alyssa Healy.

But before that steady stand, RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine and Ellyse Perry struggled to come to terms with the sluggishness of the track, perishing in their attempt to force the pace.
