An argument between a wife and her husband took a gory turn in a village here on Friday, with the husband allegedly biting his wife’s lips, following which she started to bleed profusely, and had to undergo 16 stitches at the district hospital, police said.

The wife could not tell police her ordeal verbally, so she wrote about the entire incident on paper. She has filed a complaint of harassment against her husband, brother-in-law and mother-in-law.

SHO of Magorra Mohit Tomar said the woman, a resident of Nagla Bhuchan, alleged that on Friday evening, when she was working at home, her husband Vishnu came home and started quarrelling without any reason. When she asked him to calm down, he allegedly started beating her.

She further alleged that her husband suddenly bit her lips and she started bleeding profusely. When her sister present at home came to intervene, he allegedly beat her too.

The woman also told police that when she complained about her husband’s act to her mother-in-law and brother-in-law, they allegedly abused and beat her.

On learning about the incident, her father took her to police station and filed a complaint against her husband Vishnu, mother-in-law and brother-in-law, police said, adding that she got 16 stitches on her lips.

The SHO said the couple had a fight over some domestic issues.

All the three accused are missing from the house since the incident, the SHO said, adding that raids are being conducted to arrest them.

A 34-year-old Muslim man converted to Hinduism to marry his girlfriend with whom he had an affair for the past 10 years, changing his name from Saddam to Shivshankar, police said on Monday.

SHO of Kotwali police station Devendra Singh said that three days ago, the woman had lodged a case against Saddam and his family members in the police station for rape, forcing her to have an abortion, raping her on the pretext of marriage and threatening to kill her.

But now both have married of their own free will, Devendra Singh said.

According to the police, Saddam Hussain, a resident of Nagar Bazaar, was in a love affair with a woman (about 30 years old) from the same village for about 10 years.

Since both of them belonged to different religions, marriage was not possible. The girl pressured him into marriage many times, but Saddam’s family was not ready to accept her, he said.

Troubled by this, the girl had given an application to the Superintendent of Police Basti three days ago and accused the youth Saddam of rape, forcing an abortion and threatening to kill.

On the order of the SP, the police had registered a case against Saddam and his family in the city police station, Devendra Singh said.

On Sunday night, Saddam and the girl got married in a temple in the city market as per Hindu customs and Saddam changed his name to Shivshankar Soni.

Both took seven rounds in the temple and discussed spending their lives together.

Both told the police that they had taken this decision on their own. “We were in a love affair for the last ten years,” they had said.

A 16-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly abducted and raped in a car by a man here, police said on Sunday.

The accused, nabbed through an identity card placed on the car’s dashboard, also recorded the act on his phone, they said.

The man, Rashid, abducted the girl in his car from outside her house and raped her.

The incident took place around 10 am when the girl was out to throw garbage.

Rashid also allegedly hurled casteist abuses at her while he committed the crime, police said.

After raping the girl, he threw her on a road outside her village near a cremation ground, they said.

At the time of the incident, the girl’s father, a labourer, was away from home, while her mother was working in a field.

The girl saw the name of the assailant on an identity card in his car.

He was identified as a native of a village under Thakurdwara Police Station.

Rashid was arrested on Friday and booked under sections of rape, SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act and POCSO Act, police said.

A 30-year-old blind woman died of burn injuries after she was allegedly pushed by her husband into a fire for dowry last month, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred in Sarai Mishrani village in Gopiganj area, where Sushma, sustained severe burns last month and died on Saturday, police sources said.

Based on a complaint by her father, Ram Murat Gautam, an FIR was lodged against her husband, Raju Gautam, under sections 304B (dowry death), 498A (cruelty to a woman by her husband or his relatives) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Efforts are underway to catch the accused, who is on the run, Circle Officer Chaman Singh Chawda said.

He said Sushma, from Kaudhar village in Suriyawan, was married to Raju Gautam (35) under the Chief Minister’s Mass Marriage Scheme on January 30, 2024.

Her family alleged that Raju, who had been married three times before and has two daughters from his previous marriages, was demanding cash and a motorcycle as dowry.

According to the FIR on December 13, 2024, Raju allegedly had his daughters light a bonfire and then pushed Sushma into it after an argument.

Despite her critical injuries, Raju did not seek medical help and later abandoned her at her sister’s home in Janaki Nagar, Prayagraj, on December 15, 2024.

Sushma’s family took her to multiple hospitals for treatment, but her condition did not improve. On Saturday, they brought her to the Gopiganj Community Health Centre, where she died during treatment.

Chawda said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and an investigation is underway.

A 92-year-old woman died of shock upon hearing the news of his 45-year-old son’s death during a family dispute over a mobile in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district, police said on Sunday.

The incident was reported from Yogendra Giri Ki Mathiya village under the Baria police station area of the district, they said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Kripa Shankar said a family dispute broke out in the village over a mobile phone on Saturday night.

“During the argument, Dinanath fell on the pavement and suffered a head injury. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival,” the officer said.

When Dinanath’s family brought his body home, his mother Phul Jharia Devi reportedly died of shock, Shankar said, adding that both the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Police have launched a probe after filing an FIR based on a complaint lodged by Dinanath’s brother Deep Narayan, he said.

A 35-year-old man died by suicide allegedly due to constant harassment by his wife and mother-in-law in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur last week, police said on Monday.

In a 41-second video that was reportedly recorded before his death, the man, Rajesh Kumar, sought justice, demanding that his wife and mother-in-law be arrested. He also demanded that his two children, who are reportedly in his wife’s custody, be sent back to his house.

“If I have worked honestly, there should be justice in my case, and my children should be brought back home. My wife and mother-in-law should be sent to prison,” Rajesh is heard saying in the video that has now gone viral.

Rajesh did not explain the reason behind his suicide but his brother, Santosh Kumar, told police that he was repeatedly mentally harassed by his wife and his mother-in-law, and also threatened with a false dowry case.

The incident took place in Tehra village under Sumerpur block.

“Rajesh Kumar consumed a poisonous substance on January 3. He died during treatment. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Before taking the extreme step, he had recorded a video, which is being probed,” Hamirpur Circle Officer Rajesh Kamal said.

Mr Kamal also said that a case has been registered against Rajesh’s wife and her mother, on the basis of a complaint by Santosh, and a probe is underway.

There was no comment from Rajesh’s wife or her mother at the time of filing this report.

In his police complaint, seen by NDTV, Mr Santosh alleged that on January 2, Rajesh’s wife took all the jewellery and money that were kept in the locker and left home, along with their two children.

“At 7pm, Rajesh’s brother-in-law Ravi called him and told him that his wife and children were in Pukhrayan (at her parents’ house). The next morning (January 3), Rajesh made a phone call to Ravi and asked him to return his money and jewellery. Rajesh’s wife then took the phone and, along with her mother, threatened my brother,” Mr Santosh said.

A 22-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were allegedly killed by her family, who later tried to stage the murders as suicide, in a suspected case of hate crime in Uttar Pradesh’s Lalitpur district on New Year’s Eve, police said on Monday.

The woman’s father, mother and uncle have been arrested and a detailed investigation is underway, the police added.  

The victims were identified as Mithun Kushwaha and Kamini Sahu. 

The incident took place in Bigha village in Jakhaura area, under Lalitpur police station.

According to Lalitpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammad Mushtaq, Sahu’s family did not approve of her relationship with Kushwaha. Both Sahu and Kushwaha’s families did not want the two to be together. 

A panchayat was earlier held, where Kushwaha was directed to stay away from the village till Sahu got married. While Kushwaha began living with his uncle outside the village, he would discreetly visit Sahu at her house late at night, Mr Mushtaq said.

Sahu’s family was aware of Kushwaha’s frequent visits and knew he would turn up at their house on the midnight of January 1, to celebrate his partner’s birthday.

As Kushwaha visited Sahu at midnight on New Year, the latter’s family caught him and tied his hands. They forced him to drink poison and then strangled him, Mr Mushtaq said. 

After Sahu protested and threatened to report the murder to the police, her family forced her to drink poison and strangled her. 

In a bid to mislead the police, the woman’s family hung the man’s body from a tree, to portray it as a suicide. They dumped the woman’s body behind their house, the SP said.

On the morning of January 1, the officer added, the woman’s family pretended that she went missing and began a search for her, along with the villagers. Chaos erupted after the villagers spotted the two bodies.

Police said they initially suspected it to be a case of suicide and sent the bodies for a post-mortem.

“The post mortem reports, however, revealed that they were strangled to death. The woman’s family tried to stage the murders as suicides. Three people have been arrested. They are the woman’s father Sunil Sahu, her mother Ramdevi Sahu and her uncle Deshraj Sahu,” the SP said.
