A ‍Ukrainian drone attack damaged two vessels, two piers and sparked ‌a fire in a village on the Black Sea coast in Russia’s Krasnodar region, regional authorities said on Monday (December 22, 2025).

All crew on the ships at the Volna terminal on the Black Sea have been safely evacuated, the Krasnodar region’s operational headquarters said on the Telegram messaging app.

The damage led to a fire spreading up to 1,500 square metres (1,794 square yards), said authorities. ‌By 0200 GMT the ‌fire was still raging.

Ukraine has often struck the Krasnodar ‍region with drones, targeting refineries, fuel depots, ports and airfields.

The Black Sea region is vital for Russia’s energy exports and military logistics, bordering Crimea and lying within drone range of southern Ukraine.

The village of Volna is close to the Crimean bridge over the Kerch Strait, a major artery for Russian forces, as it links the mainland to the Crimean peninsula that was annexed in 2014 from Ukraine.

Ukrainian drones on Thursday (September 18, 2025) hit a major Russian oil refinery some 1,400 kilometres (870 miles) from the front line, triggering a fire, officials from both countries said.

The strike is the latest in a wave of drone attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure as Kyiv seeks to knock out Russia’s vital energy revenues that fund its army.

A source in Ukraine’s SBU security agency said its drones had hit “the heart” of a refinery in the central Bashkortostan region run by state-controlled energy giant Gazprom.

Unverified images on Russian social media showed a fire at the facility and a plume of dark smoke rising above it.

Russia typically does not confirm successful Ukrainian strikes, but Radiy Khabirov, the Russian head of the region, said on Thursday the refinery had been hit.

“Two drones attacked the facility. There were no fatalities or people wounded. Passive and active defences were activated and the site’s security opened fire to neutralise them,” he said on social media on Thursday morning.

“We are assessing the state of the damage and currently extinguishing the fire,” he added.

Strikes over the summer months have knocked out a notable portion of Russia’s refining capacity.

Though there are no official estimates as to the extent of the damage, fuel prices have surged across the country and petrol shortages have been recorded in many regions.

The Kremlin extended a ban on petrol exports in a bid to keep prices on the domestic market in check.

Gazprom Neft said earlier on Thursday it was delaying planned maintenance work at one site in order not to exacerbate the fuel crisis.

U.S. President Donald Trump is also seeking to hobble Russia’s potential to earn from its energy sales, ramping up tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian oil, threatening China and urging Europe to do the same.

An overnight Ukrainian drone attack hit Russia’s Andreapol oil pumping station, part of the oil export route via the Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga, causing a fire and oil products to leak, a source in the Security Service of Ukraine said on Wednesday.

The attack also hit a Russian missile storage facility in Russia’s Tver region, causing a string of explosions, the source told Reuters.

Reuters could not independently verify the information.

The source said the filtration pump site and tanks with additives were damaged in the attack and that supplies via the main pipeline to the Ust-Luga terminal had temporarily been suspended.

A source in Russia’s oil pipeline monopoly Transneft said there had been no disruptions and described the damage in Tver region as limited.

Ukrainian forces have stepped up drone strikes on Russian military and energy facilities in recent weeks to raise the cost of the war for Moscow as the third anniversary of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches next month.

Its military said earlier on Wednesday that it had struck an oil refinery in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region in an overnight drone attack and caused a large fire.

Russia has conducted regular drone strikes on targets in Ukraine since 2022.

The source said the attack on the oil pumping station and missile storage facility was a joint operation conducted by the SBU security agency and Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces.
