A 30-year-old man, identified locally as an Indian student, was stabbed during a street attack in central England and later died of the serious injuries in hospital.

West Mercia Police on Friday (November 28, 2025) issued an appeal for information from any witnesses to the attack in Worcester earlier in the week.

While the U.K. police are yet to formally identify the victim, reports from India have named him as Vijay Kumar Sheoran of Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district.

“On Tuesday morning [25 November] around 4:15 am a 30-year-old man was found by officers on Barbourne Road in Worcester with serious injuries,” West Mercia Police said in a statement.

“He was taken to hospital but sadly died later that day. Five men were arrested on suspicion of murder and are now on bail as the investigation continues,” the statement added.

A sixth man who was also arrested on suspicion of murder has since been released with no further action.

West Mercia’s Detective Chief Inspector Lee Holehouse said the force’s thoughts remain with the family and friends of the man who has died, as he appealed for information.

“Over the course of the last few days my team have been conducting extensive lines of enquiries to ascertain what happened on Tuesday morning and what led to a man losing his life,” said Holehouse.

“As part of these enquiries, officers will remain on Barbourne Road over the weekend, and I would like to reassure the community that this is to continue gathering evidence and the public should not be alarmed.

“The five men who were arrested on suspicion of murder are now on bail and will continue to help us with our investigation,” he said.

“I continue to appeal to anyone who has any information that would help with our enquiries to please come forward, however insignificant you feel it may be; it could be a vital piece of information,” he added.

Meanwhile, Charkhi Dadri MLA Sunil Satpal Sangwan took to social media to condole the loss of life and offer support to the family at their “unbearable moment of grief”.

“Deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Vijay Kumar Sheoran, an Indian student from Village Jagrambas, District Charkhi Dadri (Haryana), who lost his life following a brutal stabbing incident in Worcester, United Kingdom,” he said.

I urged the Indian government to “intervene at the earliest and extend every possible support to the grieving family — especially by ensuring the urgent repatriation of his mortal remains to India”, he said.

“We also appeal for a transparent, fair, and time-bound investigation so that justice is served and the perpetrators are held strictly accountable, he added.

A teenage boy with a knife attacked a children’s dance and yoga class in northwest England on Monday, killing two children and wounding 11 other people in a “ferocious” rampage that sent bloodied children running into a street to escape the horror, police and witnesses said.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in the attack in Southport, a seaside town near Liverpool, Merseyside Police said. The motive was not clear, but police said detectives were not treating the attack as terror-related.

Nine children were wounded, six of them in critical condition. Two wounded adults who tried to protect them also were in critical condition, police said.

“We believe the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked,” Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said.

The Taylor Swift-themed workshop was held on the first week of school vacation for children aged about 6 to 11. An advertisement for the two-hour session promised yoga, dance and bracelet making.

Witnesses described hearing blood-curdling screams and seeing children covered in blood.

“They were in the road, running from the nursery,” said Bare Varathan, who owns a shop nearby. “They had been stabbed, here, here, here, everywhere,” indicating neck, back and chest.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack “horrendous and deeply shocking.”

Merseyside Police said officers were called at about noon to an address in Southport, a seaside town of about 100,000 people near Liverpool. It called it a “major incident” but said there was no wider threat to the public.

“When they arrived they were shocked to find that multiple people, many of whom were children, had been subjected to a ferocious attack and had suffered serious injuries,” Kennedy said.

Colin Parry, an auto body shop owner, said most of the stabbing victims appeared to be young girls.

“The mothers are coming here now and screaming,” Parry said. “It is like a scene from a horror movie. … It’s like something from America, not like sunny Southport.”

The suspect, who has not been identified, lived in a village about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the site of the attack, police said. He was originally from Cardiff, Wales.

Ryan Carney, who lives with his mother in the street, said his mother saw emergency workers carrying children “covered in red, covered in blood. She said she could see the stab wounds in the backs of the children.”

“All this stuff never really happens around here,” he said. “You hear of it, stabbings and stuff like that in major cities, your Manchesters, your Londons. This is sunny Southport. That’s what people call it. The sun’s out. It’s a lovely place to be.”

Britain’s worst attack on children occurred in 1996, when 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton shot 16 kindergarten pupils and their teacher dead in a school gymnasium in Dunblane, Scotland. The U.K. subsequently banned the private ownership of almost all handguns.

Mass shootings and murders with firearms are rare in Britain, where knives were used in about 40% of homicides in the year to March 2023. Several headline-grabbing attacks and a recent rise in knife crime have stoked anxieties and led to calls for the government to do more to clamp down on bladed weapons.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “horrendous and deeply shocking” (Representational)

Southport:

A knife attack in northern England on Monday wounded at least eight people, reportedly including children, emergency services said.

Police said armed officers detained a man and seized a knife after being called to a property in Southport, near Liverpool in northwest England.

“There are a number of reported casualties,” police said in a statement.

The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said it had “treated eight patients with stab injuries who have been taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Southport and Formby hospital.”

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital said: “We can confirm that the trust has declared a major incident.”

Local business owner Colin Parry, one of the people who called police, told the domestic Press Association news agency that he believed several “young girls” had been stabbed.

Bare Varathan, who owns a local shop, told PA he saw “seven to 10 kids” who were “injured, bleeding”, adding that he saw they had been stabbed.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “horrendous and deeply shocking,” adding on X, formerly called Twitter, that “my thoughts are with all those affected”.

The area where the incident took place is located in a quiet, leafy neighbourhood of residential streets.

Some residents who were allowed to come out from the police cordon sealing it off looked visibly shocked, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.

One man who lives in an adjoining street and did not wish to be named told AFP: “It’s not what you expect to see in Southport.”
