From 2-4 To 5-4: 96th-Minute Raphinha Winner Helps Barcelona Stage Dramatic Champions League Comeback https://artifex.news/from-2-4-to-5-4-96th-minute-raphinha-winner-helps-barcelona-stage-dramatic-champions-league-comeback-7530272/ Wed, 22 Jan 2025 04:31:09 +0000 https://artifex.news/from-2-4-to-5-4-96th-minute-raphinha-winner-helps-barcelona-stage-dramatic-champions-league-comeback-7530272/ Read More “From 2-4 To 5-4: 96th-Minute Raphinha Winner Helps Barcelona Stage Dramatic Champions League Comeback” »

Raphinha struck a dramatic winner in stoppage time as Barcelona came from behind to beat Benfica 5-4 in a wild match on Tuesday and ensure direct qualification to the Champions League last 16. Benfica were leading 4-2 with under 15 minutes remaining but Barcelona mounted a stunning late comeback to stay three points behind leaders Liverpool. Vangelis Pavlidis hit a first-half hat-trick for the hosts, in part thanks to two big errors by Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

However a Robert Lewandowski double from the penalty spot, Eric Garcia’s header and a brace for Raphinha helped Barcelona claim a stunning last-gasp triumph in Lisbon.

“It was a crazy game… Benfica did well in the first half but we made a lot of mistakes,” said Barcelona coach Flick.

Barca showed grit to keep fighting after going in 3-1 down at half-time and swiftly conceding again after Raphinha pulled one back.

“The mentality of the team, they always believe in themselves and this was unbelievable to see,” said Flick.

“In the second half we created more chances than them and we deserved it.”

Benfica opened the scoring in the second minute, when Pavlidis escaped Pau Cubarsi and fired home from Alvaro Carreras’ low cross.

Barcelona responded swiftly with Lewandowski scoring from the penalty spot after Alejandro Balde was brought down by Benfica defender Tomas Araujo.

The hosts nosed back ahead through a stroke of luck, when Szczesny raced out of his goal to try and cut out a through-ball, but crashed into Balde.

Greece international Pavlidis gleefully collected the loose ball and rolled his second into the empty net.

Barcelona, who lured Szczesny out of retirement to replace the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen in October, soon fell further behind.

Pavlidis completed his half-hour hat-trick with a penalty after another Szczesny mistake, with the goalkeeper flying in to try and dispossess Kerem Akturkoglu but bringing him down.

Barca battle back

Lamine Yamal and Raphinha missed good chances before the break as Barcelona pushed forward.

Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin saved from Jules Kounde, who should have scored, and Lewandowski could not turn home from Pedri‘s dangerous ball across the face of goal.

Raphinha pulled one back for Barcelona in bizarre fashion as a clearance by Trubin struck his head on the edge of the area and flew back into the net.

However, Benfica soon struck again, with Ronald Araujo nudging past Szczesny into his own net as he tried to cut out a cross.

Barcelona kept pushing and Lewandowski converted another penalty after Nicolas Otamendi brought down Yamal.

The Catalan giants, who last won the Champions League in 2015, pulled level when substitute Garcia headed home from Pedri’s inviting cross.

Szczesny saved former Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria‘s low shot before Raphinha’s dramatic winner.

With Benfica appealing for a penalty, Barcelona sprang a quick breakaway and the Brazilian winger slotted home to end a blockbuster battle.

Players from both sides clashed after the final whistle as tempers flared following the thrilling denouement.

“We knew how hard it would be here, in front of their fans, and they know how to play really well, they have top level players,” Raphinha told Movistar.

“We didn’t let ourselves sink at 3-1 down, we were focussed on what we needed to do to try and change the game.

“It was a spectacular game for everyone. They could have won, or us, but we managed to take it.”

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe suffered a thigh injury in this week’s Champions League match at Atalanta, the Spanish club confirmed Thursday without giving details on his absence. “Following tests carried out on Kylian Mbappe today by the Real Madrid medical department, the player has been diagnosed with a thigh injury in his left leg. His progress will be monitored,” Real said in a statement. On Tuesday, Mbappe opened the scoring in the 10th minute in a 3-2 win in Bergamo to revive the holders’ flagging Champions League campaign.

But the 25-year-old pulled up with a muscle pain after 36 minutes and was replaced by Rodrygo.

“Mbappe has some discomfort in his hamstrings. It doesn’t seem serious but we’ll see tomorrow,” said Real coach Carlo Ancelotti after Tuesday’s match.

“He couldn’t sprint, it hurt him a bit and we thought it best to replace him.”

Before pulling up Mbappe had one of his best outings in the Madrid jersey since joining last summer from Paris Saint-Germain with three clear scoring chances, including one in the second minute.

He scored the 50th goal of his career in the Champions League and his 12th since joining Real Madrid.

Real play Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Saturday followed by the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final on December 18 and another Liga game at home against Sevilla four days later.

Real Madrid usually deliver in the Champions League when the pressure is on and their trip to face Atalanta on Tuesday is shaping up to be a crucial clash for the troubled holders. The record 15-time winners have lost three of their first five matches and find themselves 24th in the standings, with places 25 to 36 eliminated at the end of the group phase. Carlo Ancelotti’s side travel to Bergamo this week before hosting RB Salzburg and then visiting French outfit Brest with their future in the competition on the line.

In-form Atalanta lead Serie A and have not been beaten yet in the Champions League, sitting fifth.

Madrid, meanwhile, have been beset by a string of problems including adaptation difficulties for superstar summer signing Kylian Mbappe and several key players sidelined through injury.

Italian coach Ancelotti has tried to ease the pressure on 25-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain striker Mbappe, who has scored 11 goals in 21 games since joining Los Blancos.

“He isn’t at his best level, but we have to give him time to adapt,” said Ancelotti last week. “He can do better and he’s working to do that.”

While Mbappe’s goal rate is not a cause for particular concern, his performances have left plenty to be desired given his status as one of the world’s top players.

Recent penalty misses against Liverpool in the Champions League and Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, both matches finishing in defeats, exacerbated the focus on Mbappe, who has also had off-field problems.

The striker was not part of two recent France squads, is battling with PSG over an unpaid salary claim and is also reported to be under investigation in Sweden in a rape case.

“I received nothing, no summons. I read the same thing as everyone else. The Swedish government hasn’t said anything — I’m not involved,” Mbappe told Canal+ on Sunday.

– Important absences -Madrid have lost key defenders Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao to long-term knee injury problems.

Even midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, whom Ancelotti has turned to as an emergency defender in the past, has also been out hurt, only returning recently.

Madrid will also be without Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga and David Alaba for the visit to face Atalanta.

In the good news column they are set to have Brazilian wing wizards Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes back fit and available.

However Vinicius’ expected return re-opens a debate which was in full flow before he suffered a hamstring injury a fortnight ago.

The Ballon d’Or runner-up likes to play on the left wing, which is also Mbappe’s favourite spot.

After using Mbappe as a centre-forward for much of the season to date, Ancelotti finally swapped them over for one match before Vinicius was hurt.

The coach cited the French forward’s break from international duty as the reason to put him on the wing, whereas Vinicius had returned from playing in South America.

Ancelotti suggested Mbappe’s struggles were not just down to him but an issue of consistency affecting the whole team.

Although he accepted criticism for Madrid’s form, having lost five games across all competitions already, after stumbling just twice in the whole of last season, Ancelotti said his team would fight.

“It’s not a funeral — we’re still fighting in all competitions,” said Ancelotti last week, following Madrid’s stumble at Athletic, the fifth of those defeats.

“We have to be optimistic, keeping in mind the problems we’re having and have had.

“But we have to be optimistic because we have a quality squad. We have not been able to find our best form, but I am convinced we will sooner or later.”

With a thumping 3-0 win over Girona on Saturday in La Liga under their belt, following that up with a show of force at Atalanta would start to ease concerns in the Spanish capital.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said Friday he would ask his players if they can win without injured teenage winger Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old will miss the visit to face Celta Vigo on Saturday in La Liga with an ankle problem. Table-toppers Barcelona have failed to win the two matches he has not started this season. Yamal was on the bench as Barcelona were beaten 4-2 by Osasuna in September and missed the 1-0 loss at Real Sociedad before the international break.

The Catalan giants have won the other 11 league matches they have played during a fine start to the campaign under the German coach.

Asked if his team could win without Spain star Yamal, who has become a vital part of Barcelona’s attack, Flick said he would put that question to the squad.

“I will ask the team this tomorrow, I think it’s a good question for them,” he told a news conference.

“Lamine is for us very important but we also have to adapt to this — we have players who can play (instead of) him…

“Lamine cannot play tomorrow, we’ll see when he’s back. It’s important for us that he will (return at) 100 percent.”

Flick would not be drawn on a potential replacement for Yamal, after using Fermin Lopez on the right flank to limited effect at Real Sociedad.

“It could be Raphinha, it could be Dani (Olmo), Fermin, Pablo (Torre) or Pau (Victor), we have different options,” added the coach.

Flick also said Gavi was fit enough to start after a long-term injury and a handful of substitute appearances on his way back to fitness.

The coach was also happy with former Barcelona great Lionel Messi‘s recent praise for his side.

Inter Miami forward Messi, Barcelona’s best ever player, said he felt “great pride” at the club’s performances this season and that the current side was “spectacular”.

“It’s an honour that the best player here from Barca in history, he says this, and he follows the team, how it’s playing and also how the young players are doing,” said Flick.

“He’s always (got) his whole heart with this club and it means a lot for us and the whole team.”

Arne Slot Gives ‘Bit Strange’ Verdict Amidst Liverpool’s Incredible Start To 2024/25 Season https://artifex.news/arne-slot-gives-bit-strange-verdict-amidst-liverpools-incredible-start-to-2024-25-season-7081295/ Fri, 22 Nov 2024 14:40:03 +0000 https://artifex.news/arne-slot-gives-bit-strange-verdict-amidst-liverpools-incredible-start-to-2024-25-season-7081295/ Read More “Arne Slot Gives ‘Bit Strange’ Verdict Amidst Liverpool’s Incredible Start To 2024/25 Season” »

Arne Slot said he cannot be distracted by Liverpool’s upcoming showdowns with Real Madrid and Manchester City as the injury-hit Premier League leaders visit Southampton on Sunday. Slot has made a remarkable start to his time in charge of the Reds, winning 15 of his first 17 games in all competitions. That has propelled Liverpool into a five-point lead over City at the top of the Premier League and to the summit of the new-format Champions League.

“It would be a bit strange if I tell you I’m not enjoying being in the position we are in now, but we also understand we’re only 11 (league) games in now, so that’s a lot of games to be played,” said Slot at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

A trip to bottom-of-the-table Southampton appears the ideal appetiser to two huge clashes as Madrid visit Anfield on Wednesday before a showdown with City on December 1.

But Slot is wary of the threat posed by the Saints, who have often dominated possession without reward on their return to the top-flight.

“We indeed have incredible fixtures coming up, starting with Southampton,” added Slot.

“It’s not going to be easy even if everyone feels it is (because they are) bottom of the league. (Southampton) do not play at all like this and they made it difficult for teams that are in the top three of four.

“Their playing style is very interesting, it is a joy to watch their games.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold could be back in time to face Madrid, but is unlikely to return from a hamstring injury this weekend, while Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota remain out.

Liverpool’s title rivals received a major boost this week as Pep Guardiola extended his contract as Manchester City boss until 2027.

Slot is a confessed admirer of the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach, who has led City to six Premier League titles in the past seven seasons.

“That’s good news for City first of all, and also good news for the league because I think everyone wants to have the best managers possible and the best players over here,” said Slot.

“On the other hand City have so many quality players that if he made the choice to leave the club I would never expect them to be bottom of the league next season.”

The final of next year’s expanded Club World Cup will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced on Saturday. The stadium, which is home to the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets, had already been chosen as the venue for the 2026 World Cup. The first edition of the expanded 32-club tournament will kick-off on June 15 and conclude at MetLife on July 13. A total of 12 venues will be used for the tournament with only two of them on the West Coast — the Rose Bowl in Pasadena near Los Angeles and Lumen Field in Seattle.

The tournament is taking place at the same time as the regional CONCACAF Gold Cup which will be held mainly on the West Coast.

The other venues which will host games are — Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta), Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte), TQL Stadium (Cincinnati), Hard Rock Stadium (Miami), GEODIS Park (Nashville), Camping World Stadium (Orlando), Inter&Co Stadium (Orlando), Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia) and Audi Field (Washington, D.C.).

The draw for the tournament will be held in December — 30 of the 32 places have already been secured through the qualification procedure.

The Club World Cup will feature title winning teams from each of FIFA’s continental confederations.

Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich are among the 12 European teams who have qualified for the tournament while Argentina’s River Plate and Boca Juniors and Brazil’s Flamengo are among six South American teams.

“This new FIFA competition is the only true example in worldwide club football of real solidarity and inclusivity, allowing the best clubs from Africa, Asia, Central and North America and Oceania to play the powerhouses of Europe and South America in an incredible new World Cup which will impact enormously the growth of club football and talent globally,” said Infantino.

The FIFA president announced the venues on stage at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, New York.

FIFA also announced a four-year partnership with Global Citizen to support their anti-poverty initiatives. As part of the agreement Global Citizen will produce the half-time show at the 2026 World Cup final.

Key test

The tournament will be viewed as a key test ahead of the 2026 World Cup itself and there will be a focus on security issues after crowd problems at July’s Copa America games at the stadiums in Charlotte and Miami.

FIFA has yet to announce any broadcast deals or sponsorship contracts for the tournament and the competition has faced some opposition within the game.

FIFpro and the European Leagues body filed a joint complaint to the European Commission against FIFA over the introduction of the tournament into the international match calendar.

Opponents of the new tournament have said it adds further congestion to an already crowded schedule and increases the workload of players.

The last version of the Club World Cup featured seven teams in a knockout format and was won by Manchester City who beat Brazil’s Fluminense in the final in Saudi Arabia.

FIFA plan to hold the expanded tournament every four years although no host as yet to be chosen for the 2029 edition.
