Outgoing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief M. K. Stalin on Saturday (May 9, 2026) said the new government should ensure the continuation of the farsighted and well-planned schemes implemented by the DMK regime.

In a social media post, Mr. Stalin said people would continue to benefit if the welfare schemes introduced by the DMK government for women, youth, students, children, government employees, and marginalised sections of society were carried forward.

“The State will also witness continued development. The new government should take my suggestion into consideration,” he said.

Mr. Stalin said he welcomed the statement made by the alliance partners that they would continue to remain in the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) led by the DMK, even though they had extended support to Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) to help overcome the prevailing political crisis in the State following a hung Assembly.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national president K.M. Kader Mohideen on Saturday (May 9, 2026) extended unconditional support to Vijay-led TVK to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

“The Congress MLAs, who contested as part of the DMK alliance, did not visit Anna Arivalayam to thank us. The Congress party snapped its ties with the DMK overnight. But CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmugam, CPI state secretary M. Veerapandian, and VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan expressed their camaraderie. It reflects their faith in the DMK,” he said.

Mr. Stalin also thanked the other alliance partners who stood by him and the DMK.

The political uncertainty in the State finally came to an end on Saturday evening (May 9, 2026) after TVK chief Vijay called on Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai, staking claim to form the government with the support of 120 MLAs-elect in the 234-member House.

On the day of polling in Tamil Nadu (April 23, 2026), a senior civil servant, serving in New Delhi, visited Chennai to attend a wedding. At the marriage hall, what he heard was a loud message in favour of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder C. Joseph Vijay. The official was surprised as he was under the impression that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) would coast to victory.

On the same day, a Madurai-based activist, who helps students prepare for competitive examinations, went to his native village near Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar district to cast his vote. When he met youngsters in the village and enquired about their choice, the only reply that came was: “Vijay, Vijay, and Vijay.”

From Puducherry to Tamil Nadu Assembly

N. Anand, popularly known as ‘Bussy’ Anand, is the general secretary of the TVK and a trusted aide of its founder, C. Joseph Vijay. He is set to enter the Tamil Nadu Assembly as a MLA from T. Nagar in Chennai.

The 61-year-old MLA-elect had earlier served as a legislator in the Puducherry Assembly, representing the Bussy constituency. He won the seat in 2006 as a nominee of the Puducherry Munnetra Congress, a party founded by P. Kannan, former Speaker of the Union Territory.

This is possibly the first instance of the Tamil Nadu Assembly including a member who has previously served as a legislator in another Assembly.

Vijay Rasigar Mandram president

Mr. Anand had also served as president of the Vijay Rasigar Mandram in Puducherry, where he organised welfare initiatives. During this period, he came into close contact with Mr. Vijay and later became a founding office-bearer of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam when it was launched two years ago.

Since then, he has been coordinating Mr. Vijay’s political outreach, including election campaign meetings.

Karur stampede case

The Karur Town police registered a case against Mr. Anand and two others in connection with the stampede at a party meeting addressed by actor Vijay at Velusamypuram in Karur district on September 27, 2025, in which 41 persons were killed.

Mr. Anand was also questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation, which is probing the incident.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday (May 10, 2026), putting an end to almost six decades of alternating rule by the State’s two dominant Dravidian parties—DMK and AIADMK.

The TVK, which won 108 seats in the recent Assembly election, has an effective strength of 107 as party president Mr. Vijay was elected from two constituencies. He will have to vacate one seat. The party secured the support of five Congress MLAs-elect and two each from the CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, all of whom had contested as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA).
