U.S. President Donald Trump said his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping was “100% correct” in his assessment that the U.S. was a nation in decline, but the remarks referred to the years of his predecessor Joe Biden.

“When President Xi very elegantly referred to the United States as perhaps being a declining nation, he was referring to the tremendous damage we suffered during the four years of Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden Administration, and on that score, he was 100% correct,” Mr. Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

He said the U.S. “suffered immeasurably with open borders, high taxes, transgender for everybody, men in women’s sports, Diversity-Equity-Inclusion (DEI), horrible trade deals, rampant crime, and so much more!”

Mr. Trump asserted that the U.S. has seen “an incredible rise” during the first 16 months of his administration and pointed to record stock markets and 401(k)s, military victories, renewed economic strength and what he described as a booming job market.

Mr. Trump also touted a military victory and thriving relationship in Venezuela, as well as the “military decimation” of Iran.

“President Xi was not referring to the incredible rise that the United States has displayed to the world during the 16 spectacular months of the Trump Administration,” he said.

“Two years ago, we were, in fact, a Nation in decline. On that, I fully agree with President Xi!” Mr. Trump said, adding that, “But now, the United States is the hottest Nation anywhere in the world, and hopefully our relationship with China will be stronger and better than ever before!”

Mr. Trump also cited trillions of dollars in foreign investment flowing into the U.S., praised the administration’s rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes and claimed that President Xi congratulated him on what he called the administration’s “tremendous successes” in a short period of time.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday (May 14, 2026) announced that his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping would be making a reciprocal visit to the White House on September 24.

“Thank you again, President Xi, for this beautiful welcome, and tonight, it is my honour to extend an invitation to you, Madam Peng, to visit us at the White House this September 24 and we look forward to it, and I’d now like to raise your glass and propose a toast to the rich and enduring ties between the American and Chinese people,” Mr. Trump said during his speech in Beijing during his meeting with Mr. Xi.

“It’s a very special relationship, and I want to thank you again. This has been an amazing time,” Mr. Trump said.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping held a “good” meeting in Beijing on Thursday (May 14, 2026), the White House said, in a readout that did not include any reference to Taiwan.

“President Trump had a good meeting with President Xi of China. The two sides discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation,” the White House said in a statement.

United Arab Emirates

Iran and the United States reached an impasse again on Monday (May 11, 2026) over how to end their war while their ceasefire grew increasingly shaky, with the two sides exchanging fire in recent days, ships and Gulf states being targeted, and fighting flaring between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

But getting to any deal likely remains tough work. Iran insists it wants to see the American blockade end and sanctions lifted before beginning negotiations over its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. The U.S. — and Israel — want that material removed since it could be used to eventually build a bomb, should Iran choose to do so. Tehran insists its programme is peaceful, but it has enriched uranium beyond the levels needed for civilian power generation.

Mr. Trump said on Sunday (May 10, 2026) that Iran’s response to his latest proposal was “TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!”

Ending the blockade before discussing Iran’s nuclear programme would eliminate a major point of leverage for Mr. Trump in the talks.

In the meantime, the standoff over the strait, which is a key transit point for the world’s oil and natural gas exports, has sent fuel prices skyrocketing and rattled world markets.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who launched the war with Mr. Trump on Feb. 28, insisted that the conflict was “not over”, telling CBS’ “60 Minutes” in an interview that aired on Sunday (May 10, 2026) that a critical goal is getting the nuclear material out of Iran. If that can’t be accomplished with negotiations, Mr. Netanyahu said that Israel and the U.S. agree “we can reengage them militarily”.

Mr. Netanyahu also said the current Iranian government’s “days are numbered — but it could take a lot of days”.

The U.S. and Israel have killed dozens of high-ranking Iranian officials, including the country’s supreme leader in the opening salvos of the war, and the conflict has inflicted heavy damage to Iran’s economy, but its theocracy maintains its grip on power.

Mr. Trump immediately rejected a new Iranian proposal sent on Sunday (May 10, 2026) to him via Pakistan. In it, Iran demanded war reparations from the U.S., full Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, an end to sanctions and the release of its seized assets abroad, Iranian state television reported.

Iran also called for an immediate end to the war, including the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah — which have repeatedly exchanged fire though technically also in a ceasefire. That conflict has seen Israeli strikes into Lebanon, its occupation of Lebanese territory and deadly Hezbollah attacks, including one that killed another Israeli soldier, the Israeli military said on Monday (May 11, 2026).

“We did not demand any concessions — the only thing we demanded was Iran’s legitimate rights,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said on Monday (May 11, 2026). “The American side still insists on its one-sided views and unreasonable demands.”

Iran did, however, offer to dilute part of its highly enriched uranium, and transport the rest to a third country, and called for 30-day negotiations to finalize details, two regional officials involved in the negotiations told The Associated Press (AP). The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomacy taking place.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered to take the uranium from Iran.

Russia operates Iran’s sole nuclear power plant at Bushehr and also took some of Iran’s uranium stockpile in Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

Mr. Esmail Baghaei who was asked on Monday (May 11, 2026) about Mr. Vladimir Putin’s remarks. He said, ”At the current stage, our focus is ending the war.”

Meanwhile, Iran executed another man it accused of spying for both the CIA and Israel’s Mossad intelligence service.

State-run IRNA news agency identified the prisoner as Mr. Erfan Shakourzadeh, saying he had worked on satellite communications and relayed classified information to those intelligence services.

Iran has carried out a string of executions since nationwide protests swept the country in January and the Activist groups have long accused Iran of carrying out closed-door trials during which defendants are unable to fully defend themselves.

Iran’s judiciary chief has repeatedly said that Tehran would increase the speed with which it carried out hangings to fight back against its enemies at home and abroad.

U.S. President Donald Trump will travel to China on May 14 and 15 for a rescheduled summit with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the White House has announced.

Mr. Trump, who was earlier scheduled to travel to Beijing by the end of this month, postponed his trip due to the war in Iran.

Announcing Mr. Trump’s “long-awaited” trip to China, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday (March 25, 2026) the U.S. President and First Lady Melania will also host President Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, for a reciprocal visit to Washington DC at a later date this year.

Responding to a question about whether the two leaders spoke about the conclusion of the war as a precondition to reschedule this meeting, she answered there was no discussion about the rescheduling of the meeting between the President and Mr. Xi.

“President Xi understood that it’s very important for the President to be here throughout the region right now. He understood, obviously, the request to postpone and accept it, which is why we have a meeting,” Ms. Leavitt said.

Asked if the war would conclude by the time of the meeting in May, Ms. Leavitt said, “Again, as I’ve said, we’ve always estimated approximately four to six weeks.” Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi last met in person in October on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Busan, South Korea.

Mr. Trump said last week, while meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michel Martin in the Oval Office, that he would be going to China in five or six weeks’ time instead of at the end of the month. He said he would be rescheduling his trip to China.

“We’re working with China, they were fine with it,” Mr. Trump said. “I look forward to seeing President Xi. He looks forward to seeing me, I think,” he added.

The U.S.-Israel launched a joint attack on Iran on February 28 and the retaliation by the Islamic nation extended the war to the entire Gulf region.

The U.S. and Israel attack killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The joint strikes came after days of build-up, with Mr. Trump ramping up the pressure on Tehran to agree to a new deal on its nuclear programme.

The conflict has also taken a major toll on energy supply chains, especially across the Strait of Hormuz.
