Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis escaped a nasty injury after almost colliding with a ball boy during an Abu Dhabi T10 league match at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium. Du Plessis was tossed over the advertising hoardings, leading to an awkward landing. The incident happened during the match between the Morrisville Samp Army and Delhi Bulls on Wednesday. With the Bulls chasing 113 to win, Tim David hit Isuru Udana for a boundary towards the extra cover region.

Du Plessis made a long chase to stop the ball but failed to do so. However, du Plessis couldn’t apply the brakes in time as the follow through took him beyond the ropes.

While the two were about to collide, the ball boy, who had crouched to collect the ball, unintentionally tossed du Plessis over the hoardings. The former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain landed awkwardly on the other side.

Luckily for him, du Plessis came out of the situation unharmed. A video of the same incident has gone viral on social media.

Meanwhile, Morrisville Samp Army continued their winning ways as they rode on Charith Asalanka‘s fiery innings and a tremendous bowling effort to script a three-run win over Delhi Bulls.

On a slow-turning track, Morrisville made the most of the dropped catches from the Bulls. Charith Asalanka’s 25-ball 51-run innings further helped Samp Army post 112/5 in 10 overs.

Tom Banton gave a good start to Delhi in the chase, scoring 25 runs in 11 balls. But after Mohammad Zahid cleaned up his stumps with his first ball, the momentum began shifting towards Morrisville. With a few tight overs from Mohammad Zahid, Qais Ahmad and Karim Janat, Morrisville shackled the Delhi Bulls until Tim David started turning things around once again.

Zahid bowled two wide balls in the final over, turning the contest into a nail-biting thriller. With Delhi needing five runs to win on the final ball, David was run out and Samp Army won the match by 3 runs.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction saw some stunning steal deals unfold over two days in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Franchises had to spend big in order to buy coveted stars like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, Venkatesh Iyer, etc. on Day 1. But on the second day, some big bargains unfolded as franchises landed some established stars from the auction pool, while others simply didn’t have the money left to go all-in. Some of the top players franchises were lucky to sign for a bargain price includes the names of Washington Sundar, Glenn Maxwell, Quinton de Kock, etc.

Glenn Maxwell: Though the Australian all-rounder’s form is mostly the flip of a coin, the franchise putting its money on him can’t really be sure which Maxwell would turn up in a particular season. Maxwell was released by Royal Challengers Bengaluru ahead of the mega auction after a flop IPL 2024 campaign. With form not helping his case in the mega auction, Punjab Kings snapped Maxwell up for a cut-price deal of Rs 4 crore.

Tim David: Another Australia in the list, only a couple of years ago, David was being seen as one of the finest middle-order batters in the world, when it comes to the shortest format. But a poor run of form saw his stock decline. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, having let go of Maxwell, decided to replace him by signing David from the auction. He only cost INR 3 crore.

Adam Zampa: There’s no stopping Australian in the list, with spinner Adam Zampa slotting in at the No. 3 spot. With 341 wickets across 280 T20 games, Zampa is one of the top spinners in white-ball cricket at present. Though he hasn’t been able to replicate the same impact in the IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad would be hopeful of that change as Zampa wears the orange shirt under the captaincy of his compatriot Pat Cummins. He was signed for just Rs 2.40 crore.

Quinton de Kock: One of the most fearsome opening batters in the game, De Kock was snapped up by Kolkata Knight Riders for a stunningly low fee of INR 3.60 crore. Landing a player who has scored 3,157 runs in 107 IPL matches, including two centuries, is a bargain that the KKR management would be immensely proud of.

Washington Sundar: Topping the charts is India all-rounder Washington Sundar. When Sundar was released by the Sunrisers Hyderabad, he was expected to cost somewhere around INR 10 crore in the auction. But, the spin-bowling all-rounder only cost Gujarat Titans Rs. 3.20 crore. With a T20 international record of 47 wickets from 52 matches and an economy rate of 6.87, Sundar is arguably the smartest buy of the auction.

Los Angeles Waves CC secured a top-two finish in the Sixty Strikes tournament by the National Cricket League (NCL) USA, as they chased down a target of 100 in just 8.4 overs against Chicago CC. Walking in at No. 3, Australia batter Tim David smashes 44 off just 23 balls to lead his team over the finish line. Adam Rossington’s 10-ball 20 provided a flying start, while Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan‘s 4-ball 14 cameo provided a great finish to Los Angeles.

Winning the toss, Los Angeles captain Tymal Mills put Chicago to bat. Despite significant contributions across the order, a total of 99 was managed in 10 overs. Star batters Chris Lynn and Robin Uthappa came to bat at unusually low positions of No. 6 and No. 7, and both failed to get going. Former New Zealand spinner Todd Astle was the chief wicket-taker for Los Angeles, picking up three.

In the run chase, it was Rossington and David’s 63-run partnership that nearly took Los Angeles home. Rossington was forced to retire hurt after 10 balls, however.

Shakib provided the finishing touches for Los Angeles, smashing two sixes in his 4-ball cameo to guide Los Angeles Waves home.

The win for Los Angeles takes them to second spot, as they finish above Texas Gladiators due to a better net-run-rate (NRR). The win for Los Angeles also confirmed the exit of Suresh Raina-led New York Lions CC, who crash out in fifth place.

Despite the defeat, Chicago remained on top of the table in a closely-fought Sixty Strikes league phase.

The two sides will meet again in the Qualifier 1 game.

2011 Cricket World Cup-winner Suresh Raina rolled back the years, slamming a brilliant fifty as New York Lions CC beat Los Angeles Waves CC by 19 runs in the second match of the Sixty Strikes tournament, organised by the National Cricket League, USA. In the 10-over game, Raina smashed 53 off just 28 balls to take his team to a whopping total of 126. Despite a valiant effort, the total proved to be too uphill a task for Los Angeles Waves.

Put into bat by Los Angeles, New York started off on the back foot as opener Asad Shafiq departed for just 3. However, Raina, along with former Sri Lanka opener Upul Tharanga (40 off 23), stitched a brilliant partnership, guiding New York to a healthy total.

They lost just two wickets, posting 126 in 10 overs.

In response, Los Angeles lost Stevie Eskinazi for a golden duck off the first ball. However, significant contributions from Adam Rossington (31 off 15), Tim David (19 off 10) and Joe Burns (17 off 9) brought Los Angeles close, but not enough to cross the line.

Shakib Al Hasan failed to get going, scoring 13 off 16 balls. The Bangladesh all-rounder – who recently played in a 2-0 Test series loss to India – also gave away 18 runs in his only over with the ball.

Young USA bowler Shourya Gaur topped the wickets tally for New York with three wickets, while experienced South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi got two.

New York Lions CC become the second team to win a game in Sixty Strikes, following the win by Texas Gladiators CC in the first match.

“Are Hardik Pandya, Tim David That Bad?”: Virender Sehwag Fumes At MI, Demands Serious Actions https://artifex.news/are-hardik-pandya-tim-david-that-bad-virender-sehwag-fumes-at-mi-demands-serious-actions-5585444/ Sat, 04 May 2024 09:08:45 +0000 https://artifex.news/are-hardik-pandya-tim-david-that-bad-virender-sehwag-fumes-at-mi-demands-serious-actions-5585444/ Read More ““Are Hardik Pandya, Tim David That Bad?”: Virender Sehwag Fumes At MI, Demands Serious Actions” »

Former India batter Virender Sehwag questioned Mumbai Indians (MI)’s tactics during the 24-run defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their IPL 2024 match on Friday. Chasing a below-par 170, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 145 off 18.5 overs at the Wankhede Stadium. While analysing the match, Sehwag said he was “baffled” with captain Hardik Pandya and Tim David arriving at No.7 and 8 in the lineup, respectively. Sehwag also posed a similar question for KKR after star all-rounder Andre Russell batted down the order.

“KKR saved Andre Russell; he played only two balls. Mumbai Indians saved Hardik Pandya and Tim David. What did you achieve by doing that? There were many deliveries left, and they all got out. You could’ve come earlier, or maybe you could’ve finished the game earlier, too. I don’t know what happens to them when they chase… Hardik Pandya at seven and Tim David at 8. I just don’t understand what they did. Are these players that bad that they will get out if they come earlier?” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Sehwag also slammed Hardik for batting down the order for MI, and pointed out how the all-rounder used to bat in the top order for Gujarat Titans. He added that the MI owners should take serious actions against the players and management.

“Hardik Pandya batted at 4 consistently when he was the GT captain. What has happened here? It baffles me that the experienced players are coming so low.

“I’m baffled by this. Management needs to take severe action on players and ask them what’s happening. Or, players should speak up about why their batting positions are changed. The captain, batting coach, bowling coach, and support staff are at fault here. Owners need to ask strict questions,” he added.

Speaking on the loss, Hardik said after the game that his team failed to form any needed partnerships, and there are a lot of questions that will take time to answer, but he has not much to say at the moment.

“I mean obviously in the batting inning, we couldn’t form partnerships and kept losing wickets, in T20s if you don’t form partnerships, it will cost you. Not much, there are a lot of questions that will take some time to answer but for now, not much to say,” Pandya said in a post-match presentation.

A fan got injured at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday after Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Tim David‘s shot hit him on the face during the IPL 2024 match against the Delhi Capitals (DC). The incident happened on the 14th over of MI’s change and the individual ended up needing medical attention. David hammered a sixth on the fifth delivery of the over bowled by pacer Khaleel Ahmed high over midwicket. The fan copped a blow on his face after he tried to catch the ball but it deflected off his hands.

The individual covered his face with a towel before being escorted out of the area. A picture of the same incident went viral on social media.

Even DC shared a post on X to wish the fan speedy recovery.

Coming back to the match, DC put up a mammoth total of 257/4 in their 20 overs after being put into bat by MI captain Hardik Pandya.

In reply, MI couldn’t chase down the improbable target and ended up with 247/9.

Jake Fraser-McGurk smashed 84 off 27 deliveries to lead DC’s charge. There was no stopping DC as Shai Hope hit a 17-ball 41, skipper Rishabh Pant made 29 off 19 deliveries and Tristan Stubbs smashed an unbeaten 48 to pummel the opposition attack.

In reply, Pandya hit 46 off 16 balls but it was a 70-run partnership between Varma and Tim David, who hit 37 off 17 balls that raised MI’s hopes.

David fell lbw to Mukesh Kumar after a four and a six and Varma was run out at the start of the final over as MI fell short by 10 runs in the end.

For DC, Mukesh and impact substitute Rasikh Salam took three wickets each.

The win DC to the 5th spot while MI remained ninth.

Mumbai Indians have struggled to effectively halt opposing teams’ momentum once they start building it, which is something the five-time IPL champions must address going forward, feels batter Tim David. MI find themselves in the eighth spot with only three wins from eight outings. They suffered a nine-wicket loss to table-toppers Rajasthan Royals in their previous outing. Barring Jasprit Bumrah, their bowling has been disappointing. “Someone like Booms (Jasprit Bumrah) has been winning games for us but we haven’t been effective enough in shutting teams down when they get going.

“That is a challenge going forward,” David said on the eve of MI’s match against Delhi Capitals here.

“It was pretty obvious against RR that wasn’t the standard that we set ourselves to. That is the challenge for the playing group, we set the tone,” the Australian added.

Known to be perennial slow starters, MI find themselves in a precarious situation and cannot afford to lose another game if they are serious about making the play-offs.

“Obviously we had a slow start to the season, then we played some better cricket. If we had won our last game it would have been our fourth win in five matches so far.

“We need to play our best cricket it is coming to that point in the season,” David said.

MI are scheduled to play Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders twice each besides Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last five fixtures, which are must-win fixtures for them. All three teams are in the top four currently, making MI’s task that much harder.

“If we want to win the competition we need to beat the best in the competition. We haven’t played all those sides but if we beat them, we are in the playoffs where all the teams considered the best will be.” Bumrah has been Mumbai’s knight in shining armour, winning matches for them single-handedly and David is glad he doesn’t have to face “the best in the world”.

“He is incredibly consistent, he believes in his own skillset and has a history of good performance. He has a unique action that makes him difficult to pick up, he bowls fast, nails yorkers and also has hard-to-pick slower balls.”

Mumbai Indians batter Tim David and batting coach Kieron Pollard have been fined 20 percent of their respective match fees for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct during the game against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on April 18. The fine was imposed after a viral video of the match sparked controversy where members in the squad and support staff in the dugout of five-time champions were seen allegedly providing illegal assistance to batter Suryakumar Yadav in asking for a review.

“David and Pollard committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. David and Pollard were each fined 20 percent of their respective match fees,” an IPL release said on Saturday.

“Both admitted to the offence and accepted the match referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the match referee’s decision is final and binding.” In the 15th over of MI’s innings, an Arshdeep Singh delivery was full and way outside off-stump, very close to the line. Suryakumar, who was batting on 67 off 47 deliveries, tried chasing it but the onfield umpire deemed it a legal delivery.

But TV cameras showed MI head coach Mark Boucher was gesturing to Suryakumar that it was a wide, following which David and Pollard was seen urging the right-hander to take a review, which is illegal as per rules.

Recapping the match, MI defeated PBKS by eight runs after the hosts were bowled out for 183 while chasing 193.

After the match, PBKS stand-in captain Sam Curran said it was “heart-breaking” for his team to take it close and still lose.

“This team loves a close game. Got well to get close, thanks to Ashutosh… Hopefully we can win the close ones and get the momentum,” Curran had said.

Following his side’s six run loss to the Gujarat Titans (GT) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign opener, Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya said that he backs batter Tilak Varma’s decision to not take that single against Rashid Khan to give strike to hard-hitting Tim David, even though it perhaps cost them the game. MI failed to capitalise on momentum brought by a 77-run stand between Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis and registered a narrow loss to start the tournament. A crucial decision that decided the outcome of the game was Tilak not taking a single against Rashid Khan in the 17th over and backing himself to fire runs against the spinner instead of David.

In the post match presentation, Hardik said, “Obviously we backed ourselves to chase those runs but it was one of those days when we see the score quite less compared to what it could have been in five overs, I think we lost little bit of momentum there. It feels good to be back because this is one stadium where you can enjoy and feel the atmosphere quite lively and obviously the crowd was full and they got a good game as well. (On Tilak not taking the single vs Rashid) I think Tilak felt that that was a better idea at that point of time, I completely back him, not an issue, 13 games to go.”

Coming to the match, MI opted to bowl first. Gujarat Titans was largely kept silent by Jasprit Bumrah (3/14) and Gerald Coetzee (2/27) and struggled to score at a fine run rate. Sai Sudharsan (45 in 39 balls, with three fours and a six), skipper Shubman Gill (31 in 22 balls, with three fours and a six) and Rahul Tewatia (22 in 15 balls, with two fours and a six) chipped in with useful knocks to take GT to 168/6 in 20 overs.

Chasing 169, MI did lose Ishan Kishan (0) and Naman Dhir (20 in 10 balls, with a four and six) early, reduced to 30/2. However, a 77-run stand between Rohit Sharma (43 in 29 balls, seven fours and a six) and Dewald Brevis (46 in 38 balls, with two fours and three sixes brought back MI into the game. In death overs, pacers Spencer Johnson (2/25), Mohit Sharma (2/32) and Umesh Yadav (2/31) performed brilliantly, leaving MI six runs short. Hardik Pandya could score just 11 runs in four balls on MI return.

Sai Sudarshan got the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Tim David and Mitchell Marsh starred in Australia’s nail-biting six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20I in Wellington on Wednesday. Chasing a target of 216, Australia needed 12 runs off the final three balls. David smashed New Zealand pacer Tim Southee for a six to fine leg. On the next delivery, the right-handed batter managed to steal a couple. Australia needed 4 runs to win off the final ball and David took them home by whipping the ball between the deep mid-wicket and long-on fielders for a boundary.

Watch the thrilling finish from 15:23 –

Having been set 216 to win, Australia skipper Marsh hammered 72 off 44 balls before batting partner David (31 not out off 10) sealed a thrilling last-gasp victory.

The three-match series is the last for both teams before the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies in June.

Rachin Ravindra had earlier put New Zealand in the driving seat by hitting 68 runs off 35 balls to claim his first half-century in the format as the hosts finished on 215 for 3.

Marsh finished with best bowling figures of 1 for 21 before leading the charge with the bat, hitting seven sixes and two fours in his unbeaten knock.

The captain steadied his side after they lost openers Travis Head and David Warner early on.

Marsh built a partnership of 42 for the third wicket with Glenn Maxwell, who was clean-bowled by Lockie Ferguson on 25 to leave Australia 111-3 after 10 overs.

New Zealand’s fielding let them down in the 12th over as Southee missed a catch off Josh Inglis, then Phillips dropped Marsh next ball on the boundary.

Inglis was dismissed with three overs left and Australia on 172-4 when he skied his shot to Ravindra at deep backward square leg. Inglis made 20.

The game went to the wire after New Zealand seamer Adam Milne was smashed for 19 runs in the penultimate over.

Australia needed 15 from the last six balls, but David held his nerve by smashing a six before sending the final ball of the night to the boundary past a diving Phillips.
