Thailand and Cambodia agreed on Saturday (December 27, 2025) to halt ‌weeks of fierce border clashes, the worst fighting in years between the Southeast Asian countries that has included fighter jets sorties, exchange of rocket fire and artillery barrages.

“Both sides agree to maintain current troop deployments without further movement,” their Defence Ministers said in a joint statement on the ceasefire, to take effect at noon (0500 GMT).

“Any reinforcement would heighten tensions and negatively affect long-term efforts ‌to resolve the situation,” ‌according to the statement released on social media by ‍Cambodia’s Defence Ministry.

The agreement, signed by Thai Defence Minister Natthaphon Nakrphanit ‍and his Cambodian counterpart Tea Seiha, ended 20 days of fighting that has killed at least 101 people and displaced more than half a million on both sides.

The clashes were re-ignited in early December after a breakdown in a ceasefire that U.S. President Donald Trump had helped broker to halt a previous round of fighting in July.

Thailand’s Defence Minister will join ongoing talks with Cambodia on ‍Saturday (December 27, 2025) that could lead to a truce, the Thai premier said on Friday (December26), as border clashes between the two Southeast ‌Asian neighbours continued for a third week.

If the Defence Minister is able to come to an agreement with his Cambodian counterpart, the two countries will make a deal in line with a previous pact brokered with the help of U.S. President Donald Trump following a previous round of clashes in July, he said.

“What is important is that both of us have to keep the promises that both will not threaten, offend, instigate, and to reduce hostility between the two countries,” Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters in Bangkok, referring to a potential deal.

A Cambodian Defence Ministry spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Thai and Cambodian officials have been holding parleys at a border crossing since Wednesday (December 24) as hostilities between the two countries continued. ‌The ceasefire broke down in early December, with at ‌least 98 people killed on both sides and more than half a million on displaced.

Since the ‍conflict restarted, neither Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim – chair of the ASEAN bloc that facilitated the previous ceasefire – nor Trump have ‍been successful in halting hostilities.

The warring sides have also been pressed by Beijing to put an end to the fighting, with China’s special envoy for Asian affairs Deng Xijun holding talks in Bangkok and Phnom Penh in recent days.

“I hope that this time will be the last time to sign such an agreement, so that there will be peace in the area and peoplecan return to their homes,” Anutin said.

Thailand and Cambodia have accused each other of moves that led to the breakdown of the July truce, which was expanded into a wider agreement in October to help settle the conflict. The neighbours have long disputed sections of their 817-km (508-mile) land border, and the latest fighting has stretched from forested inland areas near Laos to coastal provinces.

Thailand will halt all actions it agreed to take under the terms of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal with Cambodia, the country’s Prime Minister said on Monday (November 10, 2025), just hours after a land mine explosion in the volatile border area injured two Thai soldiers.

Thailand and Cambodia signed a truce agreement at a summit in Malaysia last month, after territorial disputes between the two Southeast Asian neighbours led to a five-day deadly combat in late July that killed dozens.

Tensions have simmered, and there have been similar land mine explosions — both before and after the clashes, including one that injured three Thai soldiers patrolling the border zone in August.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Monday’s incident shows that “the hostility towards our national security has not decreased as we thought it would,” adding that all actions to be carried out under the truce agreement will be halted until Thailand’s demands are met.

He did not elaborate on Thailand’s demands. There was no immediate response from the Cambodian government.

The terms of the agreement include Thailand releasing 18 Cambodian soldiers held prisoner, and for both sides to begin removing heavy weapons and land mines from the border area.

The Royal Thai Army said a sergeant had lost his right foot after stepping on a land mine while on patrol on Monday along the border in Sisaket province, while another soldier suffered a tightness in his chest from the impact of the blast. It said both soldiers were receiving treatment at a hospital.

Thai Defence Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit said the army is still investigating whether the mine was old or was newly laid. He added that Thailand will postpone the release of the captured Cambodian soldiers, initially scheduled for later this week.

The two sides said there has been some progress on arms removal, but Thailand accuses Cambodia of obstructing the mine clearance process. Cambodia says it’s committed to all terms in the agreement, including demining, and urged Thailand to release its soldiers as soon as possible.

Thailand has accused Cambodia of laying new mines in violation of the truce, which the Cambodian government denies.

The ceasefire was initially mediated by Malaysia, and U.S. President Donald Trump later threatened to withhold trade privileges unless both Cambodia and Thailand agreed on a truce, and the deal was signed during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in October.
