A Venezuelan national shot and wounded by a U.S. immigration agent in Texas was jailed with the bullet still inside his body, his lawyer said Monday (September 21, 2026).

Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, 28, is in stable condition after suffering a gunshot wound to his torso, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The shooting in Austin, Texas, on Sunday (September 20) marked the latest instance of violence by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents tasked with enforcing President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Mr. Garces Perez’s attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, told a press conference that her client was transferred from a hospital to a detention center in Pearsall, some 135 miles (215 kilometers) southwest of Austin.

“He was shot here in his back, and they didn’t take the bullet out, and they didn’t give him pain medication, and they transferred him to ICE, to a processing centre where he spent the night without a bed,” Ms. Lincoln-Goldfinch said.

She said Mr. Garces Perez was making a DoorDash delivery when an unmarked black truck sideswiped him.

“He didn’t know it was ICE and he did a U-turn,” she said. “The truck chased him, and sideswiped him again, and the agents came out and shot him in the back of the neck and pulled him out of the car.”

“There is absolutely zero justification for having shot him,” she said. “This is why we’re calling for a stop to ICE traffic stops. ICE officers are over armed, overpaid, undertrained, and violent.”

DHS said on X that Mr. Garces Perez had “illegally entered our country under the Biden administration and had a final order of removal.”

But Ms. Lincoln-Goldfinch maintained he was in the US “legally with a work permit.”

A makeshift shrine with flowers, candles, and a sign reading “Justice 4 Wilber” was placed near the site where the shooting occurred.

Mr. Trump campaigned for president on a promise to expel millions of undocumented migrants and has taken a series of dramatic actions since returning to the White House.

Nearly 51,000 undocumented migrants were arrested in the United States in August, according to DHS figures.

Ruben Ray Martinez, 23, was shot by ICE in March 2025, in what the Texas Tribune said was the first known killing by immigration agents of an American in Mr. Trump’s second term.

More recently, a Mexican man named Lorenzo Salgado died in July after he was shot by an ICE officer in Houston, Texas.

Two Americans, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, were shot and killed by federal immigration agents in separate incidents in Minnesota during a crackdown on undocumented migrants in the northern state earlier this year.

A shooter who opened fire in the West Texas city of Midland died on Friday (June 12, 2026) after a standoff with police following an attack that left one person dead and at least nine others injured, city officials said.

Midland police said the active shooter situation ended hours after the gunfire erupted in one part of the city before ending up near a veterinary hospital.

Police did not immediately say how the suspect died.

Andrea Mendias said she heard what sounded like a small explosion at the closed veterinary clinic next to the body shop where she works and saw a number of heavily armed police officers rush into the parking lot. Some appeared to go inside the building.

Ms. Mendias said she earlier heard what sounded like at least 40 gunshots.

Video from Ms. Mendias showed officers pouring out of the back of an armoured police vehicle and police deploying robots into the area.

Midland Memorial Hospital said four people were in the operating room and five others were in stable condition.

The city with about 140,000 residents sits in the heart of the state’s oil region and was near the site of a deadly shooting rampage in 2019.

In that shooting, a gunman who had been fired from his oil services job killed seven people and wounded two dozen others while firing at random as he drove around the Odessa and Midland areas. The two cities are more than 300 miles (482 km) west of Dallas.

A weekend shooting in a Texas park in the U.S. left two people dead and six wounded, including two children, authorities said.

The victims were shot shortly before 11 pm Saturday during a Juneteenth celebration at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, about 19 miles (30 kilometers) north of Austin.

An altercation began between two groups during a concert at the event and someone started shooting, Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks said during a news conference at the scene.

The two victims who were pronounced dead at the scene were not involved in the argument, Mr. Banks said. The shooting occurred near a vendor area away from the stage set up for the concert, he added.

Police officers and fire department personnel present at the event immediately began providing emergency medical care to the wounded, who were then taken to hospitals, said Mr. Banks.

Six people — four adults and two children — were taken to local trauma facilities, all with potentially serious injuries, according to a post on X by Austin-Travis County EMS.

Police said Sunday they did not have a suspect in custody and investigators did not know how many shooters were involved.

“It breaks your heart for a family that was coming out to enjoy their evening and now their life is forever changed as a result of somebody who could care less about somebody else’s life,” Mr. Allen said.

Three people were shot, two adult males and one adult female, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries

Several videos have surfaced on social media showing people running away in fear as a gunman opened fire at the State Fair of Texas on Saturday. The shooting happened near the food court just before 8 p.m. Saturday, sending hundreds of fairgoers into a state of panic.

The police said the gunman opened fire and ran from the scene before being apprehended a short distance away. Three people were shot, two adult males and one adult female, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were listed in stable condition.

Videos shared on social media showed the frantic and chaotic aftermath of the shooting.

Watch the videos here:

One eye-witness told CBS News, “We were just getting on to the Ferris wheel and we heard screaming. We didn’t hear shots and then everyone started running towards the exit. The workers would not tell us what had happened and just told us the fair was closed. There were many police that were heavily armed at the exits and police throughout being very stern, ushering everyone to go home.”

Dallas Councilman Adam Bazaldua said the shooting was “sparked from a conflict between two people who knew each other.” The police later identified the suspect as 22-year-old Cameron Turner and charged him with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The State Fair of Texas made a statement Sunday morning that its team is “deeply saddened by the incident last night on the fairgrounds.”

It continued to say, “Safety is the number one priority of the State Fair of Texas. We are committed to upholding the level of security required to ensure the State Fair of Texas event is a safe and family-friendly environment for all fairgoers, vendors, and employees. We look forward to welcoming guests today (Sunday, 10/15) starting at 2:00 p.m. We ask that everyone remain “Fair Aware.” If you see something that doesn’t look right on the fairgrounds, please say something to a uniformed police officer or State Fair Safety Team member.”

Notably, The Texas State Fair allows people with valid handgun licenses to carry their weapons ”in a concealed manner”. The fair is planning to enhance security during the final week of operations.
