Coldplay has broken the record for the highest attendance in a single tour, surpassing Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. The British rock band has sold over 10.3 million tickets as part of its Music of the Spheres World Tour which commenced in March 2022 with a show in Costa Rica. With over eight months remaining on the tour, the band could further smash the records, the Guinness World Records said on Thursday (Jan 30).

Coldplay attendance numbers were massively inflated after the band performed in India earlier this month. The band kickstarted their India leg with three concerts at DY Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai on January 18,19 and 21. The second leg of the tour included two shows on January 25 and 26 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad with over 1,30,000 concertgoers attending the event on each night.

PM Modi mentions Coldplay

Such was the magnitude of Coldplay’s impact that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the band in his speech while reflecting on the growing craze of live events in India.

“In the past decade, both the trend and demand for live events have grown. In the last few days, you must have seen the magnificent images from the Coldplay concerts held in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. It is a testimony of the scope of live concerts in India,” said PM Modi.

After the hugely successful shows in India, Coldplay’s next concert is scheduled to take place in April in Hong Kong, followed by Seoul before heading to the United States.

While Ms Swift may have fallen behind in the number of people attending her concert, Eras Tour remains the highest-grossing music tour at $2.07 billion. However, as per Guinness, there is a good possibility that Coldplay might overtake this record as well.

A raft of celebrities from Taylor Swift and Beyonce to George Clooney and Harrison Ford proved unable to prevent Kamala Harris’s crushing defeat in the US election, underlining the limited impact of sweeping star endorsements on voters. 

Instead, it was Donald Trump and the Republicans — who received scant support from the entertainment industry at large, but tapped into a targeted subset of well-known, hypermasculine influencers — who won comfortably.

So, did the Democrats’ long-standing Hollywood and music industry connections, including last-minute rally appearances from Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez, make any difference at all in the end?

“Not in this election, clearly,” said New York University arts professor Laurence Maslon.

“At the end of the day, people probably realize that Beyonce and George Clooney don’t have to worry about the cost of gas or the cost of eggs — so maybe they’re sort of irrelevant,” he told AFP.

Celebrity endorsements have long been part of the fabric of US elections, harking back to the days when Frank Sinatra wrangled the “Rat Pack” to support John F. Kennedy in 1960.

Even this year, Hollywood-led fundraisers helped raise tens of millions of dollars for Harris’s record-breaking campaign war chest.

But their impact in actually influencing votes has always been a “mixed bag,” said Arizona State University associate professor Margaretha Bentley, who teaches a public policy course on Taylor Swift.

“It’s never going to be the golden ticket that everybody’s looking for,” she said.

Mark Harvey, author of “Celebrity Influence: Politics, Persuasion, and Issue-Based Advocacy,” agreed that we “shouldn’t be terribly surprised” by the lack of celebrity impact.

“There isn’t a real strong science behind this idea that celebrities can influence people to vote for candidates,” he said.

– ‘Macho’ –
Famous supporters have only ever been effective when advocating on very specific issues on which they are widely regarded as expert, added Harvey.

As Donald Trump delivered his victory speech early Wednesday, the new president-elect was flanked by — and showered praise on — famous names from the world of sport.

UFC boss Dana White was lovingly hailed as “tough” and “a piece of work,” while golfer Bryson DeChambeau was celebrated as “fantastic” and even having a “slightly longer” drive than the golf-loving Trump.

Loud cheers — and a significant portion of Trump’s address — were devoted to his best-known supporter of all, tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Trump also received a last-minute endorsement from Joe Rogan, the influential host of one of the world’s top podcasts.

The Republican may have benefited from these associations because, in an election “largely driven by cultural issues, one of the most potent cultural issues was masculinity,” said Harvey. 

“This sort of ‘be a real man,’ the Trump ‘macho’ sort of thing… it’s the kind of thing that Joe Rogan plays all the time.”

– ‘Shocked’ –
For the Democrats, this latest scarring experience will require a “deep self-analysis… of what they did and didn’t do, and what might have been successful,” including with celebrity endorsements, said Bentley. 

Ashley Spillane, author of the report “Celebrities Strengthening Our Culture of Democracy,” agreed there was “debate” about the “value and impact of celebrity endorsements of candidates.”

But there is still “robust evidence that celebrities do have a real impact in promoting overall, nonpartisan civic engagement,” she wrote via email, pointing to Swift’s endorsement of Harris, which was credited with driving 400,000 people to a voter registration site.

Even if their endorsements failed, Hollywood celebrities showed no indication Wednesday that they would remain silent.

Waking up to the news of Trump’s victory, several well-known figures took to social media to vent their frustrations.

Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis said Trump’s win would usher in “a sure return to a more restrictive, some fear draconian time.”

“Fascist with total power… That may have been the last free election,” wrote actor John Cusack. “Horror is coming.”

Pop singer Cardi B, who appeared at a Harris rally last Friday, simply wrote: “I hate yall bad.”

Popstar Taylor Swift’s decision to attend a football game instead of US presidential candidate Kamala Harris’s pre-election day rally in Pennsylvania on Monday has created a buzz on the internet.

Taylor Swift was spotted arriving at the Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, showing support to her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce. With this, she busted all speculations suggesting she would perform at Harris’ rally, who she had recently endorsed.

On Saturday, Vice President Harris posted a video on TikTok, with Swift’s song “Long Live (Taylor’s Version)”. The fan took it as an easter egg, confirming Swift would appear at a Pennsylvania rally.

Though Swift chose match over the pre-election rally, she didn’t miss a chance to urge voters to cast their vote on November 5. In an Instagram post, marking the end of US shows on The Eras Tour, Swift shared an “extremely important reminder” for the US voters.

“And here’s a friendly but extremely important reminder that tomorrow is the US Election and your last chance to vote,” she wrote.

Swift has been a vocal supporter of Kamala Harris, publicly supporting her and her running mate Tim Walz. Earlier in September, Taylor Swift said she would vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Explaining her choice of vote, she wrote, “I’m voting for Kamala Harris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate Tim Walz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”

Swift urged voters to research the issues at hand and the stances candidates take on the topics that matter to them, encouraging them to make an informed decision.

“As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country,” she wrote.

Ivanka Trump took her 13-year-old daughter, Arabella, along with her friends to the Taylor Swift concert in Miami, despite her father, Donald Trump, once publicly declaring he hated the 14-time Grammy Award-winner.

The singer’s Eras Tour was in Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium over the weekend. Among the famous names in the crowd was Ivanka “to see one of her daughter’s favourite artists,” sources told Page Six.

Their outing comes weeks after Swift endorsed US Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris for the November 5 US presidential election, prompting Donald Trump to issue a statement on social media that read, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”

Arabella, who celebrates her birthday in July, earlier showed her love for Swift through a theme-based birthday cake decorated with lyrics from the 2014 single Blank Space — ‘Boys only want love if it’s torture.’

Earlier, Ivanka shared a few photographs from her daughter’s birthday party on Instagram. In one of the images, she wrote, “Best cake for my favourite Swiftie”.

On September 11, Swift extended support to Harris in a lengthy post on Instagram. “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” she wrote, adding that Harris is “steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”

In her viral post, she also called out the fake AI image of herself endorsing Donald Trump.

“Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” she said.

Swift signed off her post as “Childless cat lady”, taking a dig at Trump’s running mate JD Vance. Her endorsement post came after Trump and Harris’ presidential debate last month.

Responding to Swift’s support for Harris, Trump said in an interview with Fox & Friends, “I was not a Taylor Swift fan… It was just a question of time… But she’s a very liberal person. She seems to always endorse a Democrat. And she’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.”

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump headed into a newly intense phase of the U.S. presidential campaign on Monday (September 16, 2024), with tensions heightened after a second apparent assassination attempt against the Republican former President.

The arrest on Sunday (September 15, 2024) of a gunman on Donald Trump’s Florida golf course came the same day as more bomb threats poured into Springfield, Ohio, a small Midwestern city at the center of Republican-led conspiracies against immigrants.

But the dueling campaigns are set to march on with little interruption.

Vice President Harris, the Democratic nominee who will face Mr. Trump at the polls on November 5, said in a statement on Sunday that she was “disturbed by the possible assassination attempt” and “thankful that former President Trump is safe.”

The same day as the apparent assassination attempt, Clark State College in Springfield announced it would hold classes virtually this week after receiving bomb and shooting threats at the weekend. It was the fourth consecutive day of threats of bombings and other violence that have targeted the local city hall, public schools and nearby college Wittenberg University, following racist rumours about local Haitian immigrants pushed by Republicans including Mr. Trump.

‘Living in fear’

What started as municipal growing pains in a rapidly expanding city have morphed into allegations of an “invasion” by “illegal” Haitian newcomers, baselessly accused of stealing and eating people’s pets and causing a crime wave. Some Haitians living in the city have said they are scared for their lives.

Adding to the country’s acrimonious political atmosphere, Mr. Trump posted on his Truth Social website that “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” The superstar singer/songwriter posted a message on Instagram after last week’s debate saying she would be voting for Ms. Harris, calling her a “steady-handed, gifted leader.” Celebrity endorsements rarely carry enormous weight but the hugely popular Swift is seen as being in a class of her own, with more than 400 million followers on social media platforms .

It was not clear what Mr. Trump hoped to gain by attacking Ms. Swift, although he may calculate that any publicity is better than none.

He has been criticised, even by fellow Republicans, for his recent association with conspiracy-minded right-wing influencer Laura Loomer, who has at times joined him on his campaign plane. The 31-year-old Ms. Loomer has called the September 11, 2001, terror attacks an “inside job” and said some of the country’s recent mass shootings were staged by Democrats There is no evidence to support any of those claims.

A July 2024 analysis by Tufts University’s youth civic engagement group, CIRCLE, found that voter registrations have dropped significantly since then in 36 states among those aged 18-29. Harris launched her campaign on July 21 after Biden withdrew.

“Registering youths remains a major task in the months ahead,” the analysis said.

Enter Swift, an artist so successful she tied hip-hop star Beyonce’s record of 30 lifetime awards at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night. A 2023 Morning Consult poll found that 55% of self-described Swift fans were Democrats and 45% were millennials aged 28 to 43.

“I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift wrote on Tuesday to her 284 million Instagram followers, urging them to register to vote and make their own choice.

Her post drew 10.4 million “likes.” The vote.gov website received 405,999 visitors in the 24 hours after Swift shared a custom URL with followers, a U.S. government spokesperson said.

Harris aides say they would love for Swift to actively campaign, such as by appearing at a rally in her native Pennsylvania, a battleground state that could well decide the election.

But the campaign itself was not involved in Swift’s decision to back Harris.

The vice president’s aides said they learned of Swift’s support only when the entertainer, 34, posted it on Instagram minutes after the vice president stepped off the debate stage in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

A QUESTION OF INFLUENCE

What difference does a celebrity endorsement make?

A 2008 Northwestern University report found Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement added a million votes to Barack Obama’s tally.

But a 2010 North Carolina State University report found celebrity endorsements by George Clooney and Angelina Jolie did little to move the political needle.

Margaretha Bentley, a professor at Arizona State University whose class studies Swift’s social importance, is unsure whether the pop singer will have an impact. She asked her students earlier this year whether a Swift endorsement would matter.

Some said they would follow Swift’s lead and others said it would prompt them to do more research. “Some students told me they listen to celebrities when it comes to, like, what coffee they would drink, not politics,” Bentley said.

A Swift fan at the VMA awards on Wednesday, Morgan Paris, said: “It’s good that she said what she feels. And I mean, I feel like her politics and her music are two separate things, so you can’t really combine them.”

Voters of Tomorrow, which seeks to boost the youth vote, is teaming up with the informal group “Swifties for Harris” on a phone bank on Saturday to target college students in Georgia and Wisconsin, both battleground states like Pennsylvania.

Swift “is one of the most influential people of our generation, and we’re definitely excited to see how we can take her message and turn that into more political action and get more people involved,” said Jessica Siles, a spokesperson for Voters of Tomorrow.

The fierce US presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Donald Trump took social media by storm, generating responses of all kinds ranging from netizens to Taylor Swift and Elon Musk. The debate attracted 67.1 million television viewers, according to Nielsen data.

What followed, is a conspiracy theory, mostly by Trump supporters, who claimed that Kamala Harris had clip-on audio headphones on her throughout the debate, under the guise of her pearl earrings. There were speculations that her earrings were actually Icebach Sound Solutions’ Nova H1 Audio Earrings, a Bluetooth device designed to look like jewellery. 

In a statement fuelling the speculation, Icebach’s managing director, Malte Iversen, reportedly said to tech outlet Tom’s Guide, “We do not know whether Mrs Harris wore one of our products. The resemblance is striking.” He also humorously offered to create a male version of the device for Trump, suggesting that the colour orange posed a design challenge.

Despite the viral claims, experts and fact-checkers have pointed out that Harris’s actual earrings are the Double Pearl Hinged Earrings from Tiffany & Co. which retail for approximately $800. These earrings bear little resemblance to Icebach’s Bluetooth devices, which are priced at around $625. 

Harris has previously criticized the use of Bluetooth earpieces as a security risk and has been seen using wired earbuds during her campaign. The ongoing speculation surrounding her jewellery highlights the heightened scrutiny and mistrust that often accompany political debates. 

Similar conspiracy theories were spotted on social media during the 2020 and 2016 election cycles which claimed that Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton were using earpieces during their debates against Trump.

As reported by the New York Post, Icebach Sound Solutions has also announced plans to address the rumours during an upcoming appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” The company stated on its website that it has received numerous interview requests since the debate and chose Fallon as a “trusted Bavarian in heart” for a live interview.

However, it looks like Donald Trump might not need this offer of similar earpieces as he has already refused to have another debate with Kamala Harris. “THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE!” the former president wrote on the social media site Truth Social.

Elon Musk’s estranged daughter Vivian Wilson, who came out as transgender in 2022, has attacked her father over his controversial post on X offering to give Taylor Swift a child after she endorsed Democratic nominee Kamala Harris for president.

“The timing for the Taylor Swift endorsement of Kamala Harris honestly could not have been better. Can’t wait to see the Swifties at the polls! Vote blue,” the 20-year-old wrote on Instagram’s Threads, in support of the pop star.

Wilson also addressed her father’s post on X responding to Swift’s endorsement where she described herself as a “childless cat lady”, a term Donald Trump’s running mate used to mock women without children.

“Fine Taylor … you win … I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life,” the Tesla CEO had said in a post on X, which users in the comments described as “weird” and “creepy”.

In a second post on Instagram Threads, she acknowledged seeing the post and labelled it “heinous incel nonsense”.

The term incel, short for involuntary celibate, is often used to describe men who are hostile towards women who they think consider them unattractive and deny them sex.

Musk is known for his “anti-trans” views and claimed that Wilson, who was assigned male at birth, had been “killed by the woke-mind virus” and alleged that he was “tricked” into allowing her gender reassignment surgeries.

In her petition, Wilson had stated that she “no longer lives with or wishes to be related to [her] biological father in any way, shape or form.”
