Shardul Thakur and Tanush Kotian grabbed four wickets each as rampant Mumbai advanced to an innings and 456-run win over Meghalaya to top the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A table here on Saturday. Mumbai currently have 29 points, similar to Jammu & Kashmir but the defending champions are ahead by Net Run Rate — 1.74 as against the latter’s 1.59. However, J&K are currently in a position to grab at least three points against Baroda, and are poised to end the league engagements as group toppers.

Trailing by a mammoth 585 runs in the first innings here, Meghalaya batters could not trouble the scorers much for the second time in the game as they were shot out for 129 with Thakur taking 4/48 and Kotian returning 5.1-0-15-4.

Meghalaya had scored 86 in the first innings against which Mumbai had piled up 671 for seven declared to lay the platform for a victory with bonus point.

While the victory was Mumbai’s largest in terms of an innings in the Ranji Trophy history, it also bolstered their chances of reaching the quarterfinal which will start on February 8.

With Meghalaya resuming on the third day placed precariously at 29/2, it took only one session for Mumbai to take the remaining eight wickets despite resistance from the likes of Kishan Lyndoh (39) and Anirudh B (24).

Brief scores: Meghalaya 86 and 129 in 30.1 overs (Kishan Lyndoh 39, Anirudh B 24; Shardul Thakur 4/48, Tanush Kotian 4/15) lost to Mumbai 671/7 decl. by an innings and 456 runs.

India captain Rohit Sharma has opened up on the surprise inclusion of all-rounder Tanush Kotian for the remaining Tests against Australia. Following veteran Ravichandran Ashwin‘s retirement after the Brisbane Test last week, the Indian team added Kotian as a cover on Monday ahead of the Boxing Day Test, starting in Melbourne on December 26. Rohit highlighted that Kotian, who plays his domestic cricket for Mumbai, is aware of the conditions in Australia, and toured the country last month with India A.

Rohit also opened up on spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel not being called up. The Indian captain also hinted that his side might line up with two spinners at the MCG, depending on the conditions.

“Yeah, Tanush was here a month back (for the Australia A) series. And Kuldeep (Yadav), I do not think, has a visa (laughs). And we wanted somebody to get here as quickly as possible. Tanush was the one who was ready and he played here,” Rohit said in a pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

“Not that Tanush is not good enough. He has shown in the last two years what he has done in domestic cricket. And we really wanted just a backup in case, you know, we need two spinners playing here or in Sydney, you need a backup option.”

“Kuldeep, obviously, is not 100 percent fit. He recently went through a hernia surgery. And the other options, like Axar, he had a baby, so he is not going to travel. So Tanush was the right option for us at this point. And he has certainly shown in the domestic level what he is capable of.”

The five-match series is tied at 1-1 after India won by 295 runs in Perth before being crushed by 10 wickets in the pink ball game in Adelaide. The rain-affected third Test in Brisbane was drawn.

With legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announcing his retirement, 26-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder Tanush Kotian has been reportedly selected to join Team India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Although an official announcement is yet to be made, reports suggest that Kotian is set to depart for Australia on Tuesday and join up with the rest of the squad, ahead of the fourth Test in Melbourne from Boxing Day. But who is Tanush Kotian? And why has he been picked over more recognized names like Yuzvendra Chahal or Axar Patel?

Kotian’s selection is a sign that Team India are rewarding players who perform well at the domestic level. Kotian was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ for the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season, as his side Mumbai won the tournament.

Kotian’s impressive performance in the Ranji Trophy, as well as the Duleep Trophy, earned him a place in the India A squad for two unofficial Test matches against Australia A in November. In his one game, Kotian picked up one wicket, but also showed off his ability with the bat, scoring a superb 44, batting at No. 8.

Hailing from Mumbai, Kotian has represented the side impressively in first-class cricket, picking up 101 wickets in 33 games at an average of 25.70. He also boasts a tremendous average of 41.21 with the bat.

Eagle-eyed followers of cricket may remember that Kotian also played for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. While he did not get to bowl, RR’s trust in his batting was highlighted by the fact that he was sent in to open.

Kotian will reportedly only be a standby option, in case both Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja suffer from injury. However, given his record with both ball and bat, he could be a reliable customer should he be handed a first India cap Down Under.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s Replacement In India’s Border Gavaskar Trophy Squad Named. The Indian cricket team has reportedly chosen a spinner to replace Ravichandran Ashwin in the Border Gavaskar Trophy after the veteran star announced his retirement after the third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw on December 18. According to a report in Sportstar, young Mumbai spin allrounder Tanush Kotian has been included in the squad and will fly out to Australia on Tuesday. Kotian has not played any international match before.

The 26-year-old Kotian has played 33 First Class matches picking 101 wickets. In 20 List A matches he has 20 scalps while in 33 T20 games he has 33 wickets. The player previously toured Australia with the India A team ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

“Kotian has been added as a safety net and also to keep the squad number intact for the last two games. He only comes into the picture if either among Washy or Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) gets injured,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.  The bowling all-rounder picked two wickets and scored an unbeaten 39 for Mumbai in their Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Hyderabad on Monday.

Kotian has fond memories of the Melbourne Cricket Ground where he scored 44 batting at No. 8 for India A and looked the part. He already has 101 wickets to his name and 1525 runs with two centuries in 33 first-class games.

Originally, Axar Patel was supposed to be summoned to Australia but as per sources, the left arm spinner had sought a break after first two matches of Vijay Hazare Trophy due to a family commitment.

Kotian has been added to the squad following Ashwin’s surprise retirement from international cricket following the draw Test in Brisbane. The 38-year-old ended his glorious career as the second highest wicket taker for India behind Anil Kumble.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday posted a heartwarming tribute video for recently retired spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who reflected on a very big promise he made to himself early in his career when Indian team registered a series loss against England at home. Ashwin, who announced his retirement at the end of the Brisbane Test against Australia on Wednesday, was a crucial architect of India’s home domination that lasted for over 12 years and kickstarted after India’s loss to England in a Test series in 2012.

India lost the series at home to England in 2012 by 1-2 and Ashwin was early in his international career during that series. Ashwin did end up as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in that series with 14 scalps and overall at fourth spot, but his bowling average of 52.64 and no four or five-wicket hauls meant he was out-bowled by England pair of Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann (17 and 20 wickets respectively) and compatriot Pragyan Ojha, who topped the charts with 20 scalps at an average of around 30 and two five-wicket hauls and best figures of 5/45.

Ashwin, then a youngster, was dejected by this series loss and most importantly, a setback at familiar home conditions. In the BCCI video, Ashwin reminisced how he promised himself that he would make sure India would not lose a series once again at home.

“I made myself a promise in 2012, we lost a tricky series against England. I was very early in my career and I was just telling myself we are not gonna lose another one. Ever. And that is what I promised myself,” said Ashwin.

It isn’t often that we see a controversy-free series between Indian and Australian teams Down Under. On multiple occasions, Indian teams have come across some bizarre acts in Australia, especially in red-ball matches. As the India A team took on Australia A in the second unofficial Test in Melbourne, a bizarre incident took place. Australian batter Marcus Harris didn’t move despite what seemed to be a clear caught behind. As the umpire turned down the strong appeal and gave the decision in the favour of the batter, there wasn’t much the Indians could do as the DRS option wasn’t available.

Facing India A off-spinner Tanush Kotian, Harris seemed to have been caught comfortably at first slip, prompting even celebrations from the Indian team. Though the players were convinced that Kotian was out, the umpire didn’t raise his finger, leaving the touring team absolutely shattered.

The absence of DRS in the unofficial Test series left the Indians with no other option but to accept the on-field umpire’s call.

With the caught-behind chances ruled out, it was also questioned whether Harris would’ve been out LBW, if he had in fact not edged the delivery from Kotian. But, with the ball pitching outside leg, LBW was also ruled out. Later, Harris seemed to have told Kotian that the ball had hit his back leg. But, replays confirmed that the ball had hit the front pad, hence raising suspicion of whether Harris actually knew what had happened.

The close-in fielders, including KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, were confident of Harris’ dismissal earlier but looked befuddled when the decision came in the batting side’s favour. Here’s the video:

“Externally, obviously this game was getting built up a lot, which is fair enough,” Harris sa

Marcus Harris is one of the top contenders to open for Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy alonside Usman Khawaja. Harris, who hit 74 runs against India A on Friday, feels he is ready to deliver on the big stage.

“I feel like I’ve been batting well, but so have lots of people. If I get called upon, I feel like I’m ready to go — and if I don’t, then so be it,” he said.
