The AIADMK, which stated openly on Monday (May 4, 2026) that it would not support the regime likely to be formed by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), appears to be under pressure – both internally and externally – to revisit its stand.

The tone for the reconsideration of the stance was set on Tuesday (April 5, 2026) by Leema Rose, the newly elected legislator from Lalgudi, who told the media that negotiations were in progress between AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and the TVK over the formation of the government. When The Hindu attempted contacting her on Wednesday (May 6), she remained incommunicado. On Tuesday, there were also varying reports regarding the meeting between TVK general secretary ‘Bussy’ N. Anand and Mr. Palaniswami. The meeting, the details of which were not made public yet, did, in fact, take place on Wednesday.

Since Wednesday morning, sections of the AIADMK began spreading the word that a large chunk of MLA-elects was rallying behind former Law Minister, C.Ve. Shanmugam, who was elected to the House from Mailam, for the purpose of sharing power in the government. Mr. Shanmugam, who was not accessible to this journalist despite repeated efforts, however, later told reporters that it was for the party to take a call.

Some of the new legislators, including L. Jayasudha and former Ministers K.P. Anbalagan and N. Thalaivai Sundaram, to whom this correspondent spoke, stated that when they all met the AIADMK general secretary on Tuesday to exchange plesantaries, there was neither discussion on the party’s stand vis-a-vis the likely TVK regime nor any signature campaign favouring the organisation’s support for the new government.

Mr. Shanmugam’s political stock seems to have gone up in the wake of the party’s abysmal performance in the western belt and moderate showing in the old North Arcot-South Arcot (NASA) region, covering the present districts of Vellore, Tirupattur, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, and Villupuram. The party, which secured 47 seats all over the State, won 16 in the region. Mr Shamugam and his colleague, S.P. Velumani, held talks at the former’s residence before meeting Mr. Palaniswami. There are reports in sections of the media that the BJP is keen on the AIADMK supporting the TVK government to prevent any room for the Congress’ support.

However, some functionaries of the AIADMK feel that, as their party and the TVK are on the same page with regard to opposing the DMK, they should come together. Besides, as the Leader of Opposition (LOP) post has gone to the DMK, there is no point in trying to find relevance for the party to remain in the opposition. It would be beneficial for the AIADMK to be “a part of the change” in the government. Such a move will be in sync with the “thinking” of 2.38 crore electors, who are less than 40 years of age and constitute the major chunk of changemakers, some office-bearers explain.

There is also a view in the party that by becoming an ally of the TVK regime, the entire Opposition space will have to be ceded to the DMK as, after all, the TVK has grown, to some extent, at the expense of the AIADMK. A senior leader of the party in the western region says that the TVK’s senior leader and former School Education Minister K.A, Sengottaiyan is in contact with some of the MLAs of the AIADMK, triggering the talk that the Dravidian major is heading towards a split.

Only when Mr. Palaniswami personally makes clear his party’s position, will there be clarity.

On May 4, 2026, a tsunami of sorts swept across the State of Tamil Nadu and one man crested the wave – C. Joseph Vijay. An actor, once known as ‘ IllayaThalapathy’, or young commander, amongst his fans, he transitioned a decade ago to the title Thalapathy(commander), a moniker prescient enough, for he did lead his people through one of the most historic debut political appearances in the history of elections in India. In 2026, he was the hero of a full-length feature film starring the Dravidian duopoly and vanquished them.

Tamil cinema’s top actor C. Joseph Vijay’s fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Monday (May 4, 2026) made a stunning electoral debut, emerging as the single largest party with 107 seats in the 17th Tamil Nadu Assembly election. In doing so, it disrupted a nearly half-century-old bipolar landscape dominated by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Taking on multi-party fronts led by the two Dravidian majors, the TVK, powered almost entirely by Mr. Vijay’s charisma, fell just 11 seats short of the halfway mark in the 234-member House. The party secured an impressive 35% vote share, polling over 1.6 crore votes across regions, communities, and religions. Mr. Vijay himself won from both Perambur and Tiruchi East.

Prominent candidates in Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai districts

The counting of votes polled in the 21 Assembly constituencies in Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai districts began at 8 a.m. in five centres in these districts.

Strong rooms were opened in the presence of candidates or their authorised representatives.

Postal ballots are being counted first, followed by the votes recorded in the electronic voting machines (EVMs). The counting of EVM votes will begin only after the completion of the postal ballot rounds.

Prominent candidates in the region include senior Ministers Duraimurugan (Katpadi), E.V. Velu (Tiruvannamalai), R. Gandhi (Ranipet), Deputy Speaker of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, K. Pitchandi (Kilpennathur), and former AIADMK Ministers K.C. Veeramani (Jolarpet) and S.S. ‘Agri’ Krishnamoorthy (Kalasapakkam).

Of the total 21 Assembly seats in these four districts, the DMK is contesting in 17 constituencies. Some of them are: Jolarpet, Ambur, Arcot, Cheyyar, Vandavasi, Arani, Chengam, Gudiyatham, Vellore, and Anaicut. The Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) alliance partners are also in the fray: VCK (Arakkonam), Congress (Sholinghur), IUML (Vaniyambadi), and DMDK (Polur).

The AIADMK and its alliance partners are contesting in a majority of constituencies in the region: BJP (Tiruvannamalai), PMK (Sholihgur, Polur), AMMK (Tirupattur), and TMC(M) (Ranipet).

As many as 16 tables have been arranged in each constituency for every round of counting.

Four-tier security arrangements, with more than 4,000 police personnel, including Central forces, have been deployed in and around the counting centres.

Elections 2024: Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK has released its manifesto.

Chennai:

Promises to scrap ‘One Nation, One Election’, repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act, or CAA, and simultaneously award Indian citizenship to returning Sri Lankan Tamils are among the promises made by Tamil Nadu’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

The DMK is part of the Congress-led INDIA bloc formed in June last year to stop Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party from claiming a third consecutive term.

The DMK has also vowed to scrap the NEET, or National Entrance Eligibility Test, which is administered for admission to medical courses pan-India. Tamil Nadu is a fierce critic of the NEET.

In February last year the state moved the Supreme Court claiming the single-window common exam is violates federal principles, since it takes away states’ decision-making ability regarding education.

Released by Chief Minister MK Stalin and senior leaders, including Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi, the DMK has laid out a strong agenda of reviewing the BJP’s “anti-people laws”, including the National Education Policy, which it has heavily criticised for imposing Hindi on the southern states.

“People’s Manifesto”, Says Chief Minister

“The DMK continues to do what we say… this is what our leaders taught us. We went all over the state and listened to the people. This is not just a DMK manifesto… it is the people’s manifesto,” Mr Stalin said, accusing the BJP of having “destroyed India” and failing to fulfil their promises.

The Chief Minister also took a jab at the Prime Minister, who has made six visits to Tamil Nadu this year. Mr Stalin remarked he would have happier had the PM “come during the time of floods”.

Mr Modi has been actively touring the southern states to boost the BJP’s profile. The party has a negligible presence in Tamil Nadu; in the last election it got less than three per cent of the votes.

Kanimozhi To NDTV

DMK MP Kanimozhi, who has been nominated to defend her Thoothukudi seat, told NDTV the manifesto focused on protecting the federal nature of the country – a concern frequently also raised by Bengal’s Trinamool, another INDIA bloc member, and the rights of state governments.

“Our promises are implementable if the INDIA bloc forms the (central) government,” she said, expressing thanks to the DMK for re-fielding her from the Thoothukudi seat.

The DMK today also released a first list of candidates for the 21 seats it will contest; Tamil Nadu has 39 Lok Sabha seats. The rest will go to the Congress and smaller parties, in allotments identical to the 2019 arrangement. Five years ago the DMK-Congress combine swept the state, winning 38 seats.

“We have seen how much the Dravidian model of government has done for the people of this state, and this manifesto will help us take our Dravidian model all over India. I am sure of securing not only all seats in Tamil Nadu, but a good number across the country too…” Kanimozhi said.

DMK Lok Sabha Manifesto Details

Among other big-ticket promises made by the DMK are drastic cuts to the prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG (cooking gas) to Rs 75 and Rs 65 per litre and Rs 500 per cylinder, free Wi-Fi services across the state, statehood for Puducherry, scrapping of the Uniform Civil Code, and the immediate implementation of 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures.

There is also a focus on students and women empowerment in the manifesto, which promises interest-free loans of up to Rs 4 lakh for students and Rs 10 lakh for women self-help groups.

A raft of central government-backed research and higher education institutions, including IIMs and IITs, will be set up in the state, and college students will get 1GB of mobile data free, the DMK said.

A significant point is a two-year “cooling period” for judges looking to join private companies or political parties after their retirement. This point has been seen against the backdrop of former Bengal High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay stepping down and joining the BJP days later.

READ | Court Raps Tamil Nadu Governor For Referring Bills To President

Also significant is a promise to review the process by which Governors are appointed and to remove any immunity afforded to these posts. This is key because the Tamil Nadu government has been engaged in a running battle with Governors over the past few years, accusing the centre’s representative of interfering in state governance and deliberately denying assent to key bills.

When Does Tamil Nadu Vote?

Tamil Nadu votes in a single phase on April 19, the first day of polling for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Results will be declared on June 4.
