Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam said that he is prepared to take the Test captaincy role after playing international cricket for a decade amid uncertainty over Najmul Hossain Shanto’s leadership future. Currently, Shanto leads Bangladesh across formats and is likely to leave his role after the ongoing home Test series against South Africa. Shanto has informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board of his decision to step down and is awaiting approval from board president Faruque Ahmed, who is currently abroad and expected to return soon.

Asked about Shanto’s decision, the spinner said he is unaware of the development but pitched himself as his successor in the red-ball format.

“I haven’t heard anything on this matter (regarding Najmul quitting from captaincy). It’s not part of our role, I’m not fully informed on this,” Taijul told reporters at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Monday.

“Having played for 10 years, I’m fully prepared (for captaincy).

“This is a team game. The most important thing is that the team remains in good condition. Some players may be affected by outside events, while others can continue their role with calmness,” he added.

Taijul explained how he keeps himself away from outside noise and focuses on his task. “Personally, I try to stay relaxed and focus on my work. But within a team, I can’t say how each person reacts; everyone’s mindset is different. We’re not involved in management or board meetings,” he said.

With the second Test against South Africa beginning on Tuesday, Taijul stressed on winning the match to level the series 1-1 after the visitors won the opening match by seven wickets.

“Our goal remains the same: we’ll play to win. As for the match conditions, we’ll understand them once the game unfolds. But the focus will be on playing as a team – whether it’s batting, bowling, or fielding. We’ll do our best to win,” he said.

“Every match is an opportunity. From that perspective, I think this is another chance for the batters. We haven’t performed on the level as expected as a team, although some have had individual performances in different matches. If we can build two or three partnerships in a game, and one or two players score a century, our target will be much bigger and everyone’s working hard and is fully committed,” the spinner added.

Being the senior player in the team, Taijul expressed his willingness to share knowledge with other members if they are interested while adding that they have got high quality spinners in their possession.

“(Being a senior player) I can implement things, but how much someone takes from me, matters – whether as a teammate or the people of my country. I feel that when different situations arise on the field, if a spinner is bowling, for example, field positioning or how to set up a batter, the captain sometimes asks me, and I try to help,” the 32-year-old said.

“Nayeem’s record is quite good. Just because he didn’t get wickets in one match doesn’t mean he won’t perform well in the future. This can happen in a game or two, but he’s likely to deliver good performances ahead. Miraz did well against India and Pakistan, and Nayeem has also performed well previously in Chattogram and Mirpur,” Taijul added.

In-form pacer Kagiso Rabada took six wickets in the second inning as South Africa won the first test against Bangladesh by seven wickets on Thursday (October 24, 2024), wrapping up victory before lunch on the fourth day at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

South Africa reached their target as they scored 106 for three wickets in the second innings, with 41 coming from opener Tony de Zorzi and an unbeaten 30 runs from Tristan Stubbs seeing them home.

Rabada took two wickets early on the fourth day to finish with figures of 6-46, in a match in which he celebrated passing 300 test wickets, as Bangladesh were dismissed for 307 in their second innings.

The home side had fought their way back into the contest on the third day to take an 81-run lead as they were 283-7 overnight but with only three wickets in hand were always under threat as they came out to face the second new ball on Thursday.

South Africa’s pacemen quickly cleaned up the tail, denying middle order batsman Mehidy Hasan Miraz a test ton as he was the last wicket to fall, dismissed for 97, slicing Rabada to Wiaan Mulder at third slip.

It left South Africa a modest target to chase with plenty of time in hand and they took 22 overs to ensure the win.

Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam took 3-43 to add to his five wickets in the first innings

“It was a really good performance,” said winning captain Aiden Markram. “We put four days of good cricket together and the bowlers set the game up beautifully for us the first day.”

Bangladesh, who had won the toss and chose to bat, were steamrolled for 106 on the opening day, allowing South Africa to go on and build a 202-run first-innings lead.

“We had a great lead although credit to Bangladesh, who made it tough for us in the second innings,” Markram added.

The teams meet in the second test in Chittagong, starting on Tuesday.

The second and the final Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh started in Sylhet on Saturday, Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss and elected to bat first in their second and final Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong on Saturday. Sri Lanka lead the two-match series 1-0 after thumping the hosts by 328 runs in Sylhet. The visitors brought Asitha Fernando for the injured Kasun Rajitha in their only change from the series opener.

Newly minted Bangladeshi lawmaker and veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan returned for the hosts, who also handed a Test debut to medium pacer Hasan Mahmud. Shoriful Islam and Nahid Rana made way for the duo.

The match was also witness to a bizarre incident as Bangladesh went for a DRS against Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis, though he had came forward to defend the ball against Taijul Islam. Bangladesh captan Najmul Hossain Shanto took the DRS, even though he looked reluctant.

Social media could not control laughter as the tv umpire deemed it not out.

Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis each hit a fifty to guide Sri Lanka to 214-2 by tea on the opening day of the second Test against Bangladesh on Saturday.

The duo helped the tourists build on a solid start after electing to bat first in Chittagon with a 114-run partnership for the second wicket.

Karunaratne fell for 86 shortly before tea, but Mendis continued his effort to remain unbeaten on 65 alongside former captain Angelo Mathews, one not out.

Opener Nishan Madushka was run out for 57 early in the second session for Bangladesh’s first breakthrough.

Debutant pacer Hasan Mahmud sent back Karunaratne who chopped a delivery into the stumps.

Karunaratne struck eight fours and a six in his 129-ball innings, surviving a run-out scare on 18 after a mix-up with Madushka while taking a single off Mahmud.

Sri Lanka lead the two-match series 1-0 after winning the opening Test by a resounding 328 runs.

Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan returned for Bangladesh after a long Test absence and the hosts also handed a debut to Hasan Mahmud.

Sri Lanka brought Asitha Fernando in for injured Kasun Rajitha in their only change to the squad from the opening Test.
