South Africa on Monday included Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje in the Temba Bavuma-led squad for next month’s Champions Trophy after the pacers recovered sufficiently from their respective injuries. Nortje sustained an injury on his big toe last month which ruled him out of the series against Pakistan while a groin strain in November forced Ngidi to miss the series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. South Africa, the semifinalists of the 2023 ODI World Cup, are placed in group B of the Champions Trophy. They will start their campaign against Afghanistan in Karachi on February 21 before meeting Australia in Rawalpindi on February 25 and their final group game is against England on March 1.

However, frontline pacer Gerald Coetzee was not picked because of the groin injury that he suffered during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Durban last year.

Subsequently, he missed the second Test at Gqerberha and the entire home rubber against Pakistan.

Pacer Nandre Burger, who suffered a a lumbar stress reaction, ahead of the ODI series against Ireland in early October too was not considered for selection.

However, the Proteas trusted the improving fitness of all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, who broke his middle finger in the series against Sri Lanka, but he played in the second Test against Pakistan after the physios gave the green signal. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi are the specialist spinners, who will be assisted by Aiden Markram’s part-time off-spin.

South Africa squad: Temba Bavuma (captain), Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs, Rassie van der Dussen.

Batter Heinrich Klaasen will lead South Africa in the three-match T20I series against Pakistan from December 10 onwards, with regular captain Aiden Markram busy in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Markram, who will feature in the second Test from December 5 onwards and has been rested due to the tight schedule between the third Test and the T20Is. Besides Markram, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, and Tristan Stubbs will also miss the T20I series as they are also involved in the ongoing Test series.

Despite the absence of key players, South Africa’s T20I squad boasts plenty of firepower, with Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi returning for the first time since the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, as per ICC.

All-rounder George Linde is also back in the T20I setup after a three-year gap, having last featured in 2021. Linde was in exceptional form during the CSA T20 Challenge, aggregating 171 runs at a strike rate of 178.12 and taking nine wickets at an impressive average of 18.33.

The squad, South Africa’s white-ball head coach Rob Walter said as quoted by ICC: “All 15 players are capped, and we are looking to build on the experience within the group as we continue to grow as a unit.”

“In the absence of Aiden, Heinrich will lead the team. He is a vastly experienced player with a strong understanding and reading of the game. We look forward to utilising him in this role after his previous experiences in 2021.”

“We have also given George an opportunity again. He really earned his spot off the back of a strong domestic campaign, and his skills as a spinning all-rounder add important balance to the team. We’re pleased to have Anrich and Tabraiz back in the squad. Their wealth of experience and skill significantly bolsters our bowling unit, enhancing both our pace and spin departments, which will be key against a strong Pakistan side,” he concluded.

Squad: Heinrich Klaasen (captain), Ottneil Baartman, Matthew Breetzke, Donovan Ferreira, Reeza Hendricks, Patrick Kruger, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Nqaba Peter, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Andile Simelane, and Rassie van der Dussen.

Team India gave a huge hamper of good memories to it’s fans after they clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 in June in Barbados. Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India defeated South Africa by seven runs and earned their second T20 World Cup title. It also ended India’s 11-year-long ICC title drought. The main architect of India’s flawless triumph in the tournament was pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has time and again proved his worth with his masterclass bowling spells.

Bumrah bagged the Player of the Series award for his performance in the World Cup. Not only this, but the star pacer has always been the backbone of India’s bowling unit across formats.

Recently, veteran South Africa spinner Tabraiz Shamsi left the fans amazed as he shared an interesting stat on X (formerly Twitter). The stats showed that Shamsi and Bumrah have played the same number of T20Is, delivered the same number of balls, and surprising scalped the same amount of wickets.

While replying to fan’s comment, Shamsi also made it clear that the purpose of sharing the post was not to compare himself with Bumrah but to share the “crazy fact”.

“There is no comparison. Just a crazy fact that we’ve played the same amount of games, taken the same wickets aaand the freakiest of all, bowled the same amount of balls,” wrote Shamsi in reply.

However, it is worth noting that despite having the same stats in T20Is, Bumrah’s on-field impact is much greater than Shamsi’s.

Shamsi was also a part of South Africa’s Playing XI, who fumbled against India’s lineup during the T20 World Cup final. Since that match, Shamsi is yet to feature for South Africa as he was not a part of the squad who faced India in the recently-concluded T20I series.

India clinched the four-match T20I series against South Africa under the captaincy of star batter Suryakumar Yadav.

2011 Cricket World Cup-winner Suresh Raina rolled back the years, slamming a brilliant fifty as New York Lions CC beat Los Angeles Waves CC by 19 runs in the second match of the Sixty Strikes tournament, organised by the National Cricket League, USA. In the 10-over game, Raina smashed 53 off just 28 balls to take his team to a whopping total of 126. Despite a valiant effort, the total proved to be too uphill a task for Los Angeles Waves.

Put into bat by Los Angeles, New York started off on the back foot as opener Asad Shafiq departed for just 3. However, Raina, along with former Sri Lanka opener Upul Tharanga (40 off 23), stitched a brilliant partnership, guiding New York to a healthy total.

They lost just two wickets, posting 126 in 10 overs.

In response, Los Angeles lost Stevie Eskinazi for a golden duck off the first ball. However, significant contributions from Adam Rossington (31 off 15), Tim David (19 off 10) and Joe Burns (17 off 9) brought Los Angeles close, but not enough to cross the line.

Shakib Al Hasan failed to get going, scoring 13 off 16 balls. The Bangladesh all-rounder – who recently played in a 2-0 Test series loss to India – also gave away 18 runs in his only over with the ball.

Young USA bowler Shourya Gaur topped the wickets tally for New York with three wickets, while experienced South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi got two.

New York Lions CC become the second team to win a game in Sixty Strikes, following the win by Texas Gladiators CC in the first match.

Left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi on Thursday opted out of Cricket South Africa’s central contract pool to more actively pursue opportunities in T20 leagues across the globe. However, Shamsi will still be available to play for the Proteas in major bilateral or ICC tournaments in white ball formats. “I have decided to opt out of my central contract in order to be more flexible during the domestic season, allowing me to explore all opportunities available and look after my family in the best way possible,” Shamsi said in a statement issued by the CSA.

Shamsi also reiterated his commitment to South African cricket, and hoped to be part of a World Cup-winning squad in future.

“This will not impact my ability or motivation to play for the Proteas in any way and I will always be available to play for my country whenever I am needed.

“It has always been my dream to bring the World Cup home to South Africa, and no franchise league will ever be more important than playing for my country,” the 34-year-old said.

CSA Director of Cricket, Enoch Nkwe said: “Shamo is a key member of our white-ball squads, and while we respect his decision, we are pleased that he remains committed to representing South Africa.” Shamsi, whose last appearance for SA came in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against India, has played two Tests, 51 ODIs and 70 T20Is, grabbing a total of 167 wickets across those formats.

Although the right-hander hasn’t had a standout World Cup, scoring 109 runs in 8 matches, his capability to stabilise the innings could provide much-needed solidity to South Africa’s top order.

Aiden Markram (captain)

South Africa captain Aiden Markram’s inclusion in the playing XI is a significant boost to the team’s middle order. Markram, known for his elegant stroke play and ability to accelerate the scoring rate, has notched up 1,237 runs in 47 T20I matches while maintaining a strike rate of 144.

His agility in the field and versatility with the bat make him a valuable asset, capable of shifting through the gears in crucial moments.

Keshav Maharaj

South Africa sent a stern warning to their opponents in the 2024 T20 World Cup, as they bowled out Afghanistan for a total of just 56, before chasing it down in under 10 overs. The Proteas reached their first-ever T20 World Cup Final, and will face either India or England on June 29. But throughout their dominant bowling performance, one moment stood out, showing the sheer might of the South African bowling unit. The delivery – bowled by Kagiso Rabada – went viral on social media.

With Afghanistan off to a shaky start at 20-3, Kagiso Rabada bowled a peach of a delivery to knock over veteran batter Mohammad Nabi for a duck.

The inswinging delivery sent Nabi’s off-stump cartwheeling. Afghanistan were down to 20-4 inside four overs. The ball beat Nabi between his bat and pad, and dismantled the stumps.

Rabada bowled a maiden over, including the two wickets of Nabi and opener Ibrahim Zadran. Rabada’s delivery went viral on X, with fans raving.

“Look at the run up, the action and the delivery. The perfect fast bowler,” tweeted one user.

Another fan on social media called for Rabada to receive more appreciation.

One comparison touted Rabada as a greater bowler than legendary South African speedstar Dale Steyn at his peak.

One more fan brought up the mouth-watering prospect of India’s Virat Kohli facing Rabada in the 2024 T20 World Cup Final.

With the chances of rain being over 90% for the second semi-final, an abandoned match would see India qualify to the final ahead of England, due to their better group stage finish.

Rabada’s two wickets, along with three each from Marco Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi and two more from Anrich Nortje, helped South Africa bundle up the Afghan batting lineup in just 11.5 overs.

South Africa still have a 100% win record in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
